2015 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 Race Car - (Track) One Take

  • We apologize for the position and auto-iris of the forward facing camera, which was set up while the car was in garage and on jack stands. We understand if you don't know the layout of Willow Springs, it may be tricky to follow. We will try to do better next time. MF
    This 2015 Camaro Z/28 began life as a road car, and was converted by its owner, Russ Taylor, to run in NASA Super Touring 2 class racing. It runs the stock powertrain, with the dry-sump , 505 HPLS7 V8 and 6-speed manual transmission, but significant weight has been removed, and it now only weighs 3,300 lbs, wet. Stock weight is over 3,800 lbs. With a roll cage, significant aero work, and lots of tire, this Camaro looks intimidating, but it's actually quite straightforward, forgiving, and FAST to drive!

    The low bathtub camera angle out the front really magnifies the lack of visibility inside a 5th gen Camaro. It's hard to see out of a Camaro, but not this hard!

      not true, the only place you can't see is over your left shoulder when backing up, the side mirror angle show well behind the back so theres no blind spots. thats really just a over-hyped meme , the outward visibility is just as good as a BRZ/86 or any other 2 door coupe

    Since this is one of the last videos by Matt, I have to say, this is one of the few channels Ive truly loved to follow. No drama, no clickbait, no bs, just pure '' Yeah i drive a 800hp whatever '' and thats it. I'll be honest, I follow Salomindrin and Tavarish, B is for Build and Mr spagehetti. Apart from B is for Build, if you read the title and expect the video to be about just that, this is the shit ! Thanks Matt for your time =)

      When it comes to a raw N/A Camaro that can corner, absolutely. But, the ZL1 1LE is beyond insane for a car with 650/650. I saw a lengthy review of it and at the end when comparing to a GT350R or a Hellcat, he said the Hellcat is a cruiser. The GT350R is a car that he would take over the ZL1 1LE, because it shouldn't even be allowed on the streets and for the track it should absolutely have a roll cage. It's the only acceptable answer I've ever heard on why you should have the other 2 cars over a Camaro. He also said it would take a very disciplined driver to not get in some serious trouble in the ZL1 1LE. That tells me, it's the ultimate Camaro...for now.

    I know it's late in the day for one takes but a mirrorless stills camera (e.g. Sony A7sii) would be a better option than a go pro to handle situations like this where you need a lot of dynamic range and a flat profile. It's always best to err on the side of underexposure if the situation is unpredictable because you can recover detail from shadows whereas overexposure to the point of clipping is a dead zone.

    Saw a z/28 'albeit a stock one' this last weekend at VIR. They are mean for sure. Owner was telling me it was a pig, but i bet this beauty with all it's weight reduction is quite the machine. Tito Jesusmane If the Camaro wasn't as heavy as it is, then the current v6 would be perfect. The Chevy v6 weighs less than the gt86/brz engine and makes over 100 more hp.
      The same v6 turbocharged makes LS3 amounts of power in the ATS-V, and had LS2 levels of power in the XTS. Chevy just needs to get the balls to put a detuned version of the ATS-V engine into the Camaro and their light trucks. It would be a hell of a Ecoboost competitor.

    Are those front flares connected to anything else but plastic fenders? Does not make any sense. You should direct downforce to the struts that are connected to the wheels.

    • @Finnspin_unicycles
      @Finnspin_unicycles 6 років тому

      Which flare? The canards, or the splitter? Both appear to be connected to the frame.

    • @Addison0526
      @Addison0526 6 років тому +4

      The fenders look to be carbon fiber, the front splitters have braces to the front core support, and struts don’t connect to wheels.

    • @skirne_
      @skirne_ 6 років тому

      I mean this kind of downforce management is silly. Look at F1 cars. They have wheel struts shaped to make downforce as the air flows on them. Canards are just stupid and make very little difference

    • @Finnspin_unicycles
      @Finnspin_unicycles 6 років тому

      F1 cars are open wheel, completely different situation. You can't just compare an open wheel, open cab formula one car to a modified street car. The suspension of this car gets almost 0 airflow, no point attaching aero to that. Canards are usually used to increase downforce at the front when the biggest splitter allowed by the class raced in is already on the car.

    • @skirne_
      @skirne_ 6 років тому

      Ofcourse I know this. What I mean is you could rip out the silly splitters and make real downforce by conducting the air properly. Most of the downforce made by the canards is lost due the way to the wheels if you use traditional spoilers
      edit: rip off all the useless plastics like front spoiler and direct air to tho the front wheel struts where it's needed and get front wheel struts that manage air flow

    Why not dssv? Isn't that why this GM's project even exists?

    • @fastdreams
      @fastdreams 6 років тому +2

      Because Ohlins? Let me count the ways off the top of my head. 1. Significant weight savings. 2. Better compliance with Ohlins DFV = keeping the tires on the asphalt as much as possible while not skittering due to excessive rebound. 3. Adjustability (fine tune dampers for the conditions + height adjust to corner balance). 4. The z/28 dssv is very stiff, with the weight loss of the car it was probably that much worse.

    • @Dolby109
      @Dolby109 6 років тому +2

      I thought DSSV was supposed to be the pinnacle of (racing) shock technology.

    • @fastdreams
      @fastdreams 6 років тому +1

      Seems to be. In context of this OEM configuration, I think they are not ideal in combination with the excess weight loss and likely change of f/r balance. For this case, with the customized Ohlins R&T, once dialed in I would expect improved lap times (for the 3 reasons above)

    It's been a few years since I've been out at the HDPE, but my last couple events were always chock full of Z28 Camaros (almost always stock or nearly, not a race car like this). I've always respected that, because they get bought for showroom stock track use because they are robust and reliable performers that can handle real track work out of the box, which is not very common and is super awesome. Camaros are bigger cars than I tend to enjoy, but the Z/28 gives me a boner as I pretend it's a Trans Am race car and feel badass...
    EDIT: that giant metal buckle flying across the dash is making me cringe >

      Then you must be a partially blind midget. The majority of the 500k owners of a 5th gen don't seem to have any problems with it.

    Thats some crazy weight reduction

    • @rowboyto156
      @rowboyto156 6 років тому +3

      Where would he pull all that weight from? The front seats are probably 80lbs each, the rear seat and carpet might be another 100lbs. Cf hood and trunk wont cut that much weight. The wing and rollcage adds weight so yeah im mystified

    • @eaglefat9398
      @eaglefat9398 6 років тому +1

      carbon fenders, hood, trunk, plastic windows , and the cage is basically a frame so he could remove structural reinforcement , and the mufflers are like 50lbs, under the bumper skin there is a very heavy cross member front and back. Chrome moly cages don't weigh as much as you'd think either.

      The car is stripped to the bone. No ac, no heater core, all interior removed, speakers most of dash. The Anderson Composites Carbon fiber panels was a big weight difference and the Ohlins coilovers compared to stock Suspension also was big weight.

  • @dha588
    @dha588 6 років тому

    Where's the weight deduction ? Still looks very heavy.

      David Ha carbon fiber panels, no carpet, no sound deadening, no rear seats, no radio, no climate control.

    • @xTheNameisEthan
      @xTheNameisEthan 6 років тому +23

      David Ha you’re looking at the inside of a completely stripped race car and you’re asking where the weight reduction is?

    • @dha588
      @dha588 6 років тому

      Your right. I thought the road cage would just substitute for the weight that was stripped inside. I didn't know that he exterior panels were carbon either.

    • @xTheNameisEthan
      @xTheNameisEthan 6 років тому +6

      David Ha
      Yeah carbon fiber panels, deleting everything that’s not important plus the stripped interior is a pretty massive weight loss, even with the addition of a roll cage it’s still probably significantly lighter

    • @sidefx996

    Can you imagine doing that to a 6th gen, the i4 weighs 3,340lbs to start with and has the best weight balance because there is no weight up front, i know everybody says you got to have the v8 but the v6 sounds very good almost NSX good and the T2.0L is a very overbuilt engine good for 550hp on stock internals, just slap a ZZP zfr turbo on for $1,998 and a tune for $400 and you have a 500hp engine in a Camaro that you could get into the sub 3,000lbs weight range. The alpha chassis has phenomenal turn in and the chassis is far better then the 5th gen, if you got it down to 2,900lbs it would be hard to beat considering the 3,900lbs ZL1 1LE ran a 7.16min around the nurburgring.

    • @eaglefat9398
      @eaglefat9398 6 років тому +2

      its not 1989 any more, BMW 3 series weigh 3,800lbs now days. aside from a miata and BRZ everything weighs +3,400 like a 370z at 3,560lbs So yea 3,340 is light for a car that handles good at 3,900lbs especially since taking the back seat out and rear muffler off cuts it down to 3,200 flat plus a $500 tune/down pipe you got a 350hp/3,200lbs car that could wipe the floor with a 370z and a price of only $24,000

    • @eaglefat9398
      @eaglefat9398 6 років тому +2

      true i'd buy a c5 corvette you can get rebuilt title c5's for $7,000 and striped they weigh 2,800lbs +$500 cam= 450hp then slap a big ricer wing and splitter and some spherical bushing for the rear and poly everywhere else,coil-overs, big brake kit,and roll cage fixes all the rigidity problems and Bam you got a race car for under $10,000. What would you start with? a s2000? boxter?miata?
