- Taking a look at Apple Air Tags and Samsung Galaxy Smart Tags. How well do these bluetooth gadgets track?

Hello there, I got the Samsung Smart Tags, placed one under a truck hanging from the chassis in a city with cold winters, Samsung says the batteries can last up to 8 months but this Smart Tag has 13 months and it's still going. I'm shocked at how the battery is still working when we have temps of -20 below zero in this city. Simply amazing. The tag works like a charm.
Awesome video! Things to note, the tags don't have gps. The variances in location data is because you're getting the location of the phone that "heard" your tag. Samsungs tag is better overall due to the location history. You can see "travel habits" of your thief. A friend found his bike because the thief always stopped at a coffee shop around the same time every Friday so naturally on Friday he went to the coffee shop with police. Sure enough the guy comes rolling up oblivious to the cops cause apparently the police hung out there too. lol
😂
Just the video I was looking for!!! Well done, I liked all the different tests you did, basically all my questions were answered!
10:50 The tags don't actually "pick up" any locations. All they do is send a weak bluetooth signal (ping) and it is nearby phones that pick this ping, then upload the location data of the tag to the Samsung / Apple network. Hence, if one tag send a ping at a different time than the second one, the reported locations will differ.
Best complete instructional Samsung smart tag 2 video. You have great calm voice for easy listening too.
Please keep doing instructional videos.
Thanks.
Good job on this comparison video. It much better shows the subtle differences between the two products. I think the reason why there is a slight difference even when using two of the same together is because there is not a constant signal being sent out but it probably works with a polling mechanism at a certain interval (like maybe every 30 sec) in order to save battery life.
You mentioned a way to disable the speaker, but is there a way to disable the notification ability of the Samsung tag? Might keep a would be thief from tearing your car apart looking for the tag.
Think he said it happens with Airtag/iPhone only
With the test of the tags being side by side, it was probably pinging the location of the nearest users and that the limitation is that the nearest user can't ping two different tags at the same time which might explain the two tags being in a different location.
I have Smarttags placed in all 4 of my vehicles.
I use the black color.
Since "bluetooth" is a radio signal, and a weak one at that, I do all I can to give my tags all the help they can get. They need to be placed where the bluetooth radio wave has a better than average chance of making contact with the tag.
I went to the hardware store and bought some ½" wide double sided tape. It's kind of a thick foam tape, not thin paper. Stickier than hell, too.
I cut a piece that is about the length of the solid part of the tag, attach it to the tag, and then attach that to the "back" of the rear view mirror up there on the windshield.
If you hide the thing under the dash, under the seat, in the glove compartment or trunk.... it's surrounded by metal. Metal reflects the bluetooth signal and prevents it from reaching the tag. Your hampering it's functioning as intended. They need to be out in the open as much as possible... and up on the back of the rear view.. it doesn't get any more out in the open than that!
If it's up in the air, right by the windshield, the signal has no trouble seeing the tag.
Since all rearview mirrors are black plastic, the black tag blends right in and is not noticeable at all. A person can look right at it and not see it. They're barely visible even if you're looking for them.
This should be the 'GOTO' video for whoever looking to pick up these tags!!
Thanks!
You never mention if a thief receive a notification of a smart tag is moving with you, if a tag is hiding inside your car.
The tags are probably pinging at alternating intervals based on when they received power, which is why they pick up different locations.
You should test both the Galaxy SmartTag and the SmartTag+, since the Plus version is useful for this exact situation. That lower frequency should reach greater distances and offer more accuracy. It is useless for something like car keys, since you can just use a regular smarttag, then cause it to make a sound when you are close enough, but for this situation, a Plus model would actually be worth it.
UWB on the + (and the new smarttag 2) is only used when the phone Requests to use it
UWB is used for precise finding and uses high power
Low power Bluetooth is used for normal location pinging
Hey u know what, he actually covered everything I was curious about. Good review/testing
The tags are showing different locations as you travel, because they are being picked up by different phones. They have to communicate with people's phones in the area where they are, otherwise you don't get any tracking info.
This sounds useless because how many people permanently leave Bluetooth on 🤔
@@niteblaster1 i never turn mine off.
@@niteblaster1 a lot, smart watches, headphones, car stereo connection. More than you think.
Also the same phone cannot simultenously send the same signal to 2 Smartags, by the time it tries to send it to the other tag it has moved away from range (you can tavel a lot in 7 seconds when you are going 40 m.p.h)
You got me at 4:35 lmao great video!
thank you so much for driving around and waiting around!
Great review, and very thorough without bias. Clearly apple vs samsung is a definite bias as to users, because they've already invested in their mobile phone brand/technology. But for either, good information on limitations.
Really good video. Perhaps you can redo the video while using the SmartTag 2 as it also has Ultra Wide Band next to Bluetooth which makes them even better. And now with Black Friday, you probably have them below $30.
You earned a subscriber bro! Great video👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great video.
Informative and answered all the grey areas on usefulness.
Terrible time with thefts of property in unsecured locations.
Safetags and keep filling out police reports for results.
How long did it take your brother to start hearing the alert from the samsung tag, was it again 30 hours?
Best video on UA-cam.
Thanks. 😀
The Samsung Smartags do NOT notify the thief he is being followed/tracked. Only Apple air tags do that.
They do if the thief owns a high end Galaxy
If it wasn’t for an AirTag I wouldn’t have gotten my challenger back
Impressive video brother! Thanks a lot! 👏🏻💪🏻
Straight to point. Good work fella
With SmartTags, enabling the “unknown tag detection” feature in the SmartThings app enables tracking alerts. In my opinion, this makes SmartTags a better option for tracking stolen vehicles compared to AirTags, as many thieves won't enable this feature.
Currently this feature is enabled by default, at least was on my S23 Ultra. Also enables the thieves to disable the tag if alerted so it's kinda useless if thief has a galaxy device
@@stavencappIt will enable thieves to disable the tag if they actually find it, as in the case with Apple. My understanding is that they CANNOT disable the SmartTag via thier phone because it's not their tag, once again like Apple. That's what I've read but I'll find out soon because I'm ordering SmartTags and will dow my own tests.
The latency or delay, that will be my best guess, occurs because the locating method of the devices being Bluetooth is the amount of different signals from each phone interfering and the fact that there is a limit how many concurrent connections one device can have/make... (And maybe because how many tags are around and the increasing amount of accumulating data that has to be processed for the locating by servers)
Thieves will use a Bluetooth sniffer or a similar device to detect the tag in the car. The signal strength will indicate the approximate location of the device inside the vehicle.
Thank you so much you made the perfect video you literally answered all my questions I was in between decision on which one to get and you helped me a lot with your video
Glad it helped!
This is very informative and very helpful, thank you
Have you tried the Tile tracker?
Nope, haven’t tried it.
finally a decent review. Thanks
is the iPhone can notice another tracking device like the smart tag from samsung? i know iphone can notice if there’s another airtag but how about a different brand?
Excellent review. Thanks!
I personally think that after the AirTag alert that iPhone user that there’s an unknown device in their vicinity, it should let them know who the unknown AirTag is registered to.
Well, if there haven't been stolen 😂
Just ordered Samsung air tag 2 hopefully its better than my chipolo one tag. Big up from Scotland 😊😊😊
when the thief becomes the GPS-man (if they have either the iPhone or Galaxy phone), now that's funny!
Even if you disable a speaker it is still possible to locate AirTag using precise finding (available on iPhone11 and later).
Actually it is possible to create an AirTag clone tracker which will be not detectable by phones automatically (iPhone will not notify you).
And even multi-platform Apple/Samsung all-in-one clone.
So it there are significant demand it is possible to start manufacturing.
Maybe because you were driving the phones that were using bluetooth to communicate w8th the tags were "busy" telling the one tag that it was aware of its presence, causing the phone to miss communication with the second tag. Idk if thats how it works but it would make sense
taking out the speaker,,lol,,shh..nice work
Great video man
If you are going to compare two Smart Tags one should be the regular one and the other should be the Plus model. It uses different bluetooth technology and is supposed to be much more accurate, locating the object to inches. Its 3 times the cost of the regular tag. So with a test it would tell us if it is worth it.
Maybe next time..
Thanks for the video
Hey at 5:28 I think you ran a red light 😂
I personally think that after the AirTag alert that iPhone user that there’s an unknown device in their vicinity, it should let them know who the unknown AirTag belongs to.
Very Nice Video .Thank You.
Great video my guy!!! I have a tag on my dirt bike and utility trailer.
Great video man!
I removed the speaker exactly the same way, but the air tag stopped working right after, not sure what went wrong. Now it shows no location 😢
Thankyou sir for this video... practical approach cleared my doubts.
Had a question can you please tell me if the Samsung Smarttag is compatible with Samsung Galaxy m31s model? I checked online but didnt get a satisfactory answer.
Don't know for sure, but I would think ANYTHING that has the Galaxy name attached, should work with the smarttags.
thanks, very usefull review
Great job and data on your review. Thank you!
I just got a Smart Tag 2 for my Galaxy phone because I was going on vacation in Europe. It did a great job tracking my phone, however, now that I’m home the Smart Tag cannot be turned off which means the battery will run down before I’m ready to use it again. I’m only using them for travel. I did out the battery in a slower mode but still the Tag cannot be turned off.
Very informative video. It helped me a great deal. Your brother looked very excited to assist! Lol
Yeah, youtube is not his thing.
i heard a Vifeo dashcam come on. i have four with 2 and 3 channel types. I have one of the GPS tracking you showed at the beginning of the video with a yearly subscription and may be worth adding an air tag as a backup since it is a sub free. just disable the speaker but do not like it might notify the person who stole the vehicle that there is an air tag in the vehicle.
What is the model name of the smart tag and where can i buy it
It’s the original smart tag. Amazon.
Wow, I just bought a 4pk of Airtags after the mews that they are compatible w/ Androids now. As I was under the impression the airtags were way better. I'm wondering if it would've been ok w/ the just SmartTags since I have a galaxy Note phone.
Where did you see this info? In currently shopping around for these and was avoiding airtags because I have an android but I may change my mind if what you say is true. Nothing I've seen on the internet mentions airtag working with Android though.
@@teedteed9130 it was announced at the Google event I believe. Also, from MKBHD:

Not a bad review but the Smarthings app does work out of a wifi network, otherwise how could you control your home appliances if driving on the way home?
You stated you liked the recorded history of the Smarttag yes still preferred the Air tag even thought it didn't do that!
Cool video and an even cooler castle
Can you do a the same for GF-07 please 😮
Is this smart tag a plus you used or just smart tag
Just smart tag.
Underrated video
I thought about putting one of each tag in my golf cart… just in case because we have multiple iPhone/Samsung phones . Can you take out the speaker out of the smart tag- Samsung like the airtag- iPhone
It would limit the chance of thief having both in the locate ? Just wondering
Yep, you sure can.
You can mute smart tag in smart things app
Nice video.. amyway a GPS tracker nowadays is useless.. thief's all use signal jammer r to block GPS signal.. so this is the latest trend. Probably gonna get some smarttag. Thanks
Are the Motorola air tags any good for my moto g4 power?
Great video, i hope you can help me with a question i have about the smarttag. Do you know if it notifies phones with a notification like the airtag that your phone is being followed? And does it work with iPhones? I wanna track my kid and i think the airtag has some drawbacks i hope a smarttag maybe can solute.
Smart tag didn't notify the Galaxy phone for my tests. Smart tag doesn't work with Iphones unless something has changed that I don't know about.
Do you know what the oldest Samsung phone you can use with Airtags is?
Unless something has changed that I don’t know about, you can’t use a samsung phone with an AirTag.
@@DarkStoneCastle sorry, slip of the keyboard.. I meant SmartTag!
@@pspr33 "Galaxy SmartTag is only compatible with Samsung Galaxy phones. Use with a Galaxy smartphone running Android 8.0 or higher with 2.0GB RAM and above. SmartThings app required."
@@DarkStoneCastle thanks a lot for the replies, helps a lot ☺️
Your methodology is a bit flawed. You should do this with a partner to see how car gets tracked while you're at home. Your partner should go to a random parking place. Go beyond 500 feet to lose his/her Bluetooth signal and then repeat. That way, the signal would have to be picked by strangers and not you or your friend. That would've been a better test.
So the thing is who the hell walks around? With Bluetooth on, I know.I don't
so whats the maximun distance these things could track cause i need range lol
Can samsung smartag or smartag2 pair with an Iphone?
The million dollar question was this guy recorded on I bet you 100 bucks he took his phones with him and didn’t leave them at home . what’s the purpose of breaking yourself on with you that’s not much of testimony
Keep in mind your tag is only as accurate as the phones known location.....if the gps is way off thats what it'll display
I have noticed that the Samsung app gives you the location of the smartphone that detected the Smartag, not the location of the actual tag. For xample say you put the tag on a car and when it's moving the Smartag is being picked up by people walking inside stores or malls, the App map will place your car as being 200 ft inside a clothing store!
And another thing why would you get a galaxy tab for it only works on Galaxy phones I get a tile that works on them all .
yile network is smaller. samsung biggest
It gets hot in a car. Attach using Velcro to a body part and whomever steals your car would never hear the tone. Also near impossible to find.
Happy to see Jim Morrison has rose from the dead to help me make a buying decision, jokes aside, great video
Ha Ha. 😁
And another thing is I really don’t care notification that has air tag tracking tracking them and maybe they’ll think maybe I shouldn’t steal his car
i like that GO 4 IT licence plate . who else does ?
An update version with SmartTag2 vs Airtags vs Chipolo vs Moto Tag's vs Pebblebee
Good info
Very interesting. Suggestion, give Tile a go, they started the tag trackers back in 2011-ish. A feature Tile's have is ability to turn off the beep notification of the tracker so a thief nor anyone would know, other than the tracker owner, a Tile is in their vicinity; thus they cannot look for it and remove it. Both Tile and SmartTag have a outstanding feature Airtag does not, both can reverse ring the phone not just the phone ringing the tag only as with Airtag. Misplace the phone press the Tile or SmartTag button will ring the phone.
I may test this. I have a tile on an extra keyring set
Buy him some floor mats brah!
You have a very cool brother.
How many people have Bluetooth permanently enabled on any phone?
I'm guessing, a lot.
My c7 is laguna blue tint coat
Smart tags are stupid. Not everybody have a Samsung phone. But a lot of people here in America have an iPhone.
in europe less than 5% have an iphone., but many have samsung.
other way around
and where in america? chile? umin the usa, people like the vest samsungs more.
this might be useless for me and where i live. no one leaves on their Bluetooth for no reason.
Everyone that uses Bluetooth headset, car connection, and Bluetooth speakers at home
If you could afford the car... why not put both? who cares. Also. if the their will get notifications... You just take those tags apart and remove or break the speaker so they can't hear anything. They'd have no clue where it could be! You could shove it into a slit you make in the car seat foam and close the seat back up... no idea! Both brands is better so you have at least 2X the chance for an update.
dude! you live pretty much down the street from me ....
Cool!
I was super suprised when I found out that this was based in Hampton roads too. I guess we're all on high alert, huh? 🤣
@@jokerrfox354 lol .... well when you live in a place where liquor store, gun store, liquor store, gunstore, 711, liquor store.... just sayin.
You're in Boise, Idaho....
Too bad you used a car no one wants to steal :D Just kidding. Ok so what I have been researching in my rural area has been a challenge, we have limited cell towers. GPS car trackers, even if you wanted to pay for the irritating monthly service, we don't have the AT&T tower here (in my immediate area) that many of the GPS seem to use. But if the car is stolen, it would very potentially cross into other cell zones. My question with the tags is, what if I only have an iphone and don't have an android? I couldn't use both tags then. I would, if I could? I ordered an Airtag to try it out. I may do the LandAirSea to try that out in addition, if you read the Amazon reviews, at least a couple reviewers turned down the notifications to once a day, which extended battery life to 6+ months. If something happened to the vehicle, up the notifications. LandAirSea is small like a tag.
Right, if you only have an Iphone, only the Air Tags will work with your phone. Let me know if you like the LandAirSea...if you try it out.
@@DarkStoneCastle My Airtag just came today. I will start testing it and go from there. I will save your video in case I do get the LandAirSea. Thanks!
@@SirenaSpades Cool. 🙂
Those are so pointless, they need to be GPS...
They are not bad, they are amazingly good at letting you track or find something. I placed one in my wife's car and it would update me every 10 mins of her whereabouts with precise accuracy (Samsung Smartag).
Great!
KEEP BOTH HANDS on STEERING! Not two fingers. Please. It may happen you will need both hands...2 fingers can take you to graveyard, or you will put someone to graveyard. Take care.
Wait what? We need wifi for samsung? Thats stupid when im on holidays and lost my wallet kn the beach i need to forst get wifi?
No you don't, wifi is not needed but it will help a LOT if you lost your wallet in your house because wifi will also search for the samsung tag, so why not extra help? If you lost the wallet on the beach then blutooth will find it, or another Samsung phone in the area.
Interessting video :D
So, with the tracking history and no notifications, the Samsung is the way to for a jealous husband to check up on what his wife is doing. Got it (this is one reason why Apple will not activate this "feature").
Change playback speed to 1.5
*fly away*
They emit rf, so thief can find
