This is so gorgeous. Tim Foust, the bass in Home Free, has called this perhaps the most perfect song ever written. This is the second time that Don McLean has invited Home Free to back him on the re-release of an iconic song. Their collaboration on the 50th anniversary re-release of American Pie is fantastic. They also backed him on the title track of his just released album, American Boys. There's an audio-only version on Don's channel. It's a bop. Home Free is the best a cappella group out there today, in my opinion. They have a very deep and varied catalog covering everything from country to pop to rock to R&B to sacred - even a little opera from the two tenors. They do covers and original music. If you are interested in hearing more of them (and I can't imagine you wouldn't be), I suggest Helplessly Hoping for a master class in 5-part harmony, Listen to the Music for upbeat 70s Doobie Brothers, or Playing with Fire for one of their originals. Honestly, you can't go wrong no matter where you start.
I was touched by the fact that Don McLean requested that Home Free accompany him in the remake of his iconic song for his fifty year re-release. It tells me that Don trusts these men to carry his legacy into the future. That is truly touching.
Home free is special. I found them by happenstance on youtube and fell down the rabbithole. I dont even like country music as a whole....but they are different. They cover a wide variety of songs and do them beautifully. This song is gorgous. Thanks to don for writing a beautiful song. Please listen to more home free, you wont be sorry.
Yes, welcome to Home Free. This acapella group are masters of all musical genres. They also covered American Pie with Don McLean for it's 50th anniversary. They won the 4th season of the Sing Off in 2013. Their covers are upgrades, their medleys are brilliant, their collaborations with the original artists are inspirational, and their original songs are masterpieces. Within this 5 man vocal band you have 5 tenors, 5 beat boxers, and 2 bass-baritones. All of them can sing lead and they choose depending on whose voice best fits the song. They can do just about anything and they continue to grow and improve, yet they remain so humble. When they have featured guest artist, they support and allow their featured artists to shine. Several of them have their own channels and do some solo work. And just for fun Rob and Austin sing Opera. What else can I say? Their catalogue of work is quite large and continues to grow. You are in for an exciting journey and the Home Fries will be there for you all the way.
Just subscribed with hopes for more Home Free. They are the absolute best ! They will make you dance, cry and fall out of your seat laughing. They do a huge variety of music , including originals, and each have a very impressive vocal range. Their beatboxer is amazing, their bass has a 5+ octave range and their harmonies can't be beat! I don't even think of them as an acapella group anymore but just my favorite band! Thanks for the Home Free reaction! Don still sounds wonderful.
Love this collaboration! "Vincent" is such a great song by Don McLean! He originally did it in 1972. What a great remake with Home Free! Rob's voice is perfect for this song. Such a beautiful tribute to the sad life of the painter Vincent Van Gogh. He suffered from depression & committed suicide. He never saw any success during his life. But now his paintings are worth millions of dollars. Home Free does another collaboration with Don on "American Pie".
I'm 70, and this song has travelled through life with me. I love Van Goghs paintings, and the way they're included in backdrop is just beautiful. The boys did a very beautiful job. Poor Van Gogh, tormented soul in life, famous in death. I've subscribed in the hope of hearing more Home Free. You'll soon have all us Home Fries tuning in. Thank you. Nana Karen UK
I'm 82 and the same for me this song and American Pie of Don's have weathered the years with me and I'm grateful for the company. Don's collaboration with Home Free on his original songs fifty years later is an amazing choice, enhancing his very vintage songs for a new generation(s) to love as I have loved the originals and as I love these equally, they are interchangeable I listen to both regularly.
Thank you for that lovely and loving reaction, Tommy. This song has resonated with me since Don Mclean first sang it over 50 years ago and I was suprised and pleased when I saw that Home Free has covered it with him just a short time ago. Mclean's voice has always been stellar. He's 78 in this video, and still sings almost as well as he did when he first sang this. The song never ceases to move me.
New subscriber. Great reaction, too! I love it when people discover Home Free. They are a freakishly talented group of fellas that excel in all music genres. They can make you laugh sometimes, they can make you cry sometimes but they always impress. Here's a cheat sheet on the group: Adam Rupp, co-founder of HF and the awesome beatboxer. Tim Foust, bass. He has a five-octave range. Rob Lundquist (glasses and beard) Tenor Harmony. Austin Brown, Lead Tenor. Adam Chance, Baritone ( goes by Chance). Chance replaced Chris Rupp (co-founder) who left in 2016. For some serious ones: How Great Thou Art, Go Rest High On That Mountain. When you are familiar with all the boys and their vocal roles, do Mayday. And last but not least, Brothers In Arms. It is haunting and beautiful. They have recently released several new songs that you will want to check out. Unchained Melody, Listen to the Music, Brother and Stargazer Lilies trilogy: Give Me A Sign, Stargazer Lilies and Mr. ...Their latest releases are Might As Well Be Me, Playing With Fire, Remember My Name, Oh, Pretty Woman, Cruise, Stand By Me, Colder Weather and Life is a Highway. To switch it up..try Two Country Singers try singing Opera. Adam Chance just wrote the theme song to Ubisoft's new Pirate themed video game, Skull and Bones and Home Free performs it. Welcome to the Home Free rabbit hole!
Classic song. You might not know Don Mclean's name but I'm sure you've heard American Pie, another classic and one of my favorites! He still sounds so good. As for Homefree, I might not listen to acapella albums, but I'm always so impressed with what these fellas can pull off ... btw apparently they covered American Pie Featuring Don Mclean as well ... sheesh! 🤣
I remember the very first time l heard this ' painting ' of a song... I was in art class and the teacher had a slide projector ( remember those!?) set up and while Van Goghs' masterpieces were displayed, this poignant song was played in the background..It made and still makes my heart break every single time l hear it! This rendition is absolutely beautiful! Don McCleans' lyrics captured Vincent's essence masterfully. An artist who was misunderstood...loved too deeply and suffered much because l truly believe he was an empathic soul...I love his work so much... He had a beautiful soul indeed! Here is a quote by him... " It is good to love many things, for therein lies the strength. You should absolutely go down that rabbit hole. You will not be disappointed, plus we will all subscribe like I am doing now in hopes of more Home Free reactions. The best one for your first reaction to them by themselves is Man of Constant Sorrow. Keep in mind that they don't use any instruments when it's just them! Thanks for your reaction!
The group started in 2000/2001( there’s contention on the year)by brothers Chris and Adam Rupp They won The Sing Off season 4 2013 that's where they became very popular. They are just funny, down to earth, humble nice guys. They are the best A Cappella group there is IMO Sorry for the long read 🏠🍟
It's not often a song stops you in your tracks, is it. Th combination of the lyrics, the music, and the voices - just stunning. Especially if you have never heard the song before. You are far from the first person to be surprised by Rob's lovely tenor voice.
Don wrote this, trying to express through words Van Gogh's paintings and that the man was not "crazy" but was dealing with mental illness that no one understood at the time. Don is a master songwriter. He always performed this song alone with his guitar. But pairing with Home Free, masters of harmony only made a beautifully touching song richer. You may enjoy their collab with Don for the 50th anniversary re-release of his son "American Pie". In that one, you can hear each individual's voice and some of the abilities of their beat boxer. Maybe worth checking out.😊
Don sounds great for 78! He wrote this song about Vincent Van Gogh 50 years ago and it was a hit then. It’s so beautiful and Home Free backing him up is perfection. Love the Van Gogh paintings behind them. Van Gogh committed suicide and became famous after his death in the 1800’s. Home Free is an amazing a cappella band but use instruments rarely. They also did American Pie (Don McLean’s famous hit) with Don. Good one!!🤩😄
First time viewer here and Huge Home Free fan. Loved your reaction to this beautiful song and would love you to react to more Home Free. They have so many wonderful originals and covers to pick from
Man this a capella group Home Free has calibrated with huge musical stars over the years like Kenny Rodgers, Lee Greenwood, Oke Ridge Boys and Alabama and a few times these older artists have reached out to them.
Welcome to the Home Free rabbit hole! I enjoyed a capella for many years, but I never LOVED it until I was introduced to Home Free! Subscribed for more Home Free.
Second divine collaboration between Mr. McLean and Home Free. At 78 yrs. old Don's voice is as amazing as ever and combined with Home Free they produce what can only be described as magic. Hope you check out their collaboration of "American Pie", another Don McLean masterpiece that has more than stood the test of time.
This was a beautiful arrangement of his classic song! Don's voice hasn't changed much over the years. The story of Vincent van Gogh's life and mental health issues is poignantly expressed in this touching song.
This is music at its best. Love the jaw-dropping, heartfelt reaction to this great song and appreciate your playing it twice. No matter what kind of music you usually listen to, seems to me you're wired for #homefree. They will blow your mind and introduce you to all kinds of artists you weren't aware of. Their collab with McLean on American Pie is a good starting point: all the guys have solos and you can see and hear more of how their beatboxer and bass contribute to the beat. Their Stand by Me also shows how they reimagine songs and genres.
This song gets to me every time I hear it. I didn't think it could get any better than Don's version from 50 years ago. But Home Free and Don are magic together. Thanks for your reaction.
Don sounds amazing. Home free is the best a Capella group there is, in my opinion. They have the best harmonies. They can move you tears like this, and they can turn around and bring you to tears by laughing you head off.
You absolutely can not go wrong with Home Free! I suggest you take a look at their vast catalog and pick 2 or 3 songs you enjoy. See what HF does with them. You probably will be very impressed. Most are. They do everything from touching to hilarious. EG "Go Rest High Upon That Mountain" The Butts Remix or HomeFries (HF fans) will come
Don Mclean and Home Free did a great job on this song. Don still have it when sings. Home Free is my favorite group 😊 Rob and Austin did a great job. The harmonies are great on this song. This song belongs to Don Mclean
Don McLean doesn't write lyrics - he puts poetry to music. He still sounds terrific and Home Free are the perfect collaborators. Their singing & harmonies are always on point (no beatboxing in this one) and they always respect the artist and the artist's concept of their music. BTW, I sooo want a copy of the picture at the end in which they're literally absorbed. PS - You must have heard Don McLean's iconic "American Pie"!
Thank you, this was a lovely, heartfelt reaction! Even without the context of Van Gogh, or Don McLean, or Home Free, you got the essence if this song and how mesmerizing it is.
I can't listen to this without tears welling up and chills appearing all over. It opens up my heart so much. ❤❤ Welcome to Home Free. You'll find absolutely amazing covers, originals and collaborations in their very large catalogue.
@@TheWolffAndTheMelody None of us were. Even those of us who love this song from before avd who are avid Home Free fans and know what they are capable of. They still continue to blow my mind almost 10 years in.
I have always loved this song from the first time I heard it. It is so beautiful. To my ear Don McLean sounds even better than when it was released in 1971.
Your reaction to this was very moving! For a newbie like me, I’m not familiar with your channel, but this showed up in my home page being that I’m a long time fan and Patron of Home Free, and I am a fan of Don’s from way back in the 70’s. You have a new subscriber. I truly hope you’ll maybe react to Don and Home Free’s version of American Pie. It is about 8 minutes long, but very enjoyable. Maybe react to some Home Free. They are in a class all by themselves, in my opinion. I really enjoyed your reaction!!
I'm a lover of Metal, but this journey on here has taken me over many different genres. I also can't hide how I feel. This was really amazing. I'm a lover of music, and I love when it moves me. Thank you so much for being here, and taking time to even watch. That means so much.
@@TheWolffAndTheMelody That actually was visible to me seeing how moved you were by the song and the voices. I believe you would like more of Home Free videos. Several come to mind. There are three if them who also write music and have released many of those with Hime Free and as solo work. Home Free releases songs that are relevant to many of us and some themselves. Maybe check out these covers: Crosby, Stills & Nash’s “Helplessly Hoping”, Dire Straits’ “Brothers In Arms”, and an old Gospel Standard “How Great Thou Art” ( video filmed in the Austrian Alps). Even if you don’t react to them, I truly believe you’ll be moved.
Don Mclean is a legend! He sang "American Pie" (Bye Bye Miss American Pie), an old classic from the 70's which he also did that song with Home Free again just a couple of years ago. They won telly awards for that video so you might want to check it out too.
Honestly, your silence at the end of the 1st play followed by playing it a 2nd time is the best compliment you could have given an artist. Home Free is that group of men that can pull you in any direction and make you feel every single emotion known to mankind. Even though they are an a capella group, I promise that you will never miss the instruments! In fact you'll forget that there are no instruments at all! On the occasion that they do have an instrument, they put it right out where you see it! I do hope you'll check them out! Great reaction, and I have subscribed!
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Don McLean also asked Home Free to sing on his other masterpiece, American Pie. The guys have a large catalog of music, hundreds of songs, all genres, all good. Pick your favorites or try some of their original work. As they are songwriters too. These guys will blow you away. Try Man Of Constant Sorrow to start.
How Don McLean came about writing this song was…..he read a book on the life of Vincent VanGogh…I would bet it was, “Lust For Life”… it’s the life story about him..(I’ve read it, & it’s quite moving). He was so moved & impressed, he wrote this Awesome & Beautiful song ♥️💕🎵🎶🎵💕♥️ I had hoped for several years now that they would do this &, I’m so glad they Did ‼️♥️‼️
Just subscribed to enjoy yet another person react to my favorite group. Yes, I am a Home Fry. It is really as appreciated that you give over a larger part of your screen to HF's video. They put so much thought into making their videos that one would not want to miss any little bit. Other people have mentioned many HF videos to react to but you might like "Everybody's Walken This Land". Please listen to the end of all their videos through the end. Thanks for your reaction and playing it a second time. Wishing you well.
I always have mixed feelings when it comes to acappella groups. The music can be beautiful, but I miss the instrumentals. This was a lovely collaboration. "Vincent" is such a beautiful song in its original version, but the soft acappella... lovely. Great reaction!
there is no music like home free. this is only a touch of how good they are. they will touch you with a full range of emotions with their many many songs. I strongly recommend you try at least a few more: Brothers in Arms (feat Bass Tim), When a Man Loves a Woman (feat Tenor Austin), Colder Weather (feat black beard Tenor Rob), Cover Me Up (feat Baritone Chance), and Drum Solo (feat Beatboxer Adam)
I have only twice travelled as far as London for a concert: once was for Nightwish, the other was for Home Free. And, of course, Don McLean is a legend! So of course I'm glad you "got it". I'd encourage you to try VoicePlay as well sometime, my other joint-favourite acapella group: possibly their version of _Nothing_ _Else_ _Matters_ or _Valhalla_ _Calling._ I'm glad you have patrons with such good taste!
This is not the first song they did with Don Mc Clean. please react to "American Pie " a song recorded during the pandemic lockdown. They all recorded at their home makeshift studios.
I just found you tonight and am now a new sub. What a great song to introduce you to a great group of guys. Their excellence in harmonies is my favorite to listen to. Take a peak down the Home Free rabbit hole and see what’s there. I promise you’ll be entertained! 🎶 Cyd
I like Homefree, they are a very talented group. Mclean has done some classics and has some good hits. Honestly, he can still sing, but i personally think it's time to hang it up.
Nice reaction. Well you have been introduced to the most diverse A Capela group that sings the most diverse genre of music out there. There beat boxer is off the charts great does all of the percussion and a multitude of other sounds that are utilized throughout the many covers and originals they have recorded. Their videos that accompany their recordings are superb from to serious to hilarious depending on the song. Each of the guys could have a solo career they are that good. Their collection of approximately 150+ covers and originals is a deep rabbit hole as they address approximately 10 different music genres and few others when select members separately record. I’ve Seen
Mayday(DON’T WATCH TILL YOU ARE VERY FAMILIAR WITH THE GROUP AND THEIR RANGES )
There's not a song that you pick from their 200+ catalog that is bad I haven't found one yet.
They are just funny, down to earth, humble nice guys. They are the best A Cappella group there is IMO
Sorry for the long read 🏠🍟
It's not often a song stops you in your tracks, is it. Th combination of the lyrics, the music, and the voices - just stunning. Especially if you have never heard the song before.
You are far from the first person to be surprised by Rob's lovely tenor voice.
This makes me cry every time I see it. Thank you for reacting to Home Free. And especially this one.
Maybe worth checking out.😊
Beautiful song & performance ❣️ Loved your lovely & thoughtful comments ❣️Thanks👍😀
Many thanks. So glad you are here!
Well I tell you I can remember Don McLean from back in the day and I tell you what he hasn't lost a step and he still has that beautiful voice
First time viewer here and Huge Home Free fan. Loved your reaction to this beautiful song and would love you to react to more Home Free. They have so many wonderful originals and covers to pick from
Thanks for being here friend. I plan on doing a few more.
One of the most poignant and beautiful songs ever. It hits hard , the words hurt my heart. 💔
Man this a capella group Home Free has calibrated with huge musical stars over the years like Kenny Rodgers, Lee Greenwood, Oke Ridge Boys and Alabama and a few times these older artists have reached out to them.
Beautiful. Great collaboration with a respected singer/songwriter! #Home Free!
Welcome to the Home Free rabbit hole! I enjoyed a capella for many years, but I never LOVED it until I was introduced to Home Free! Subscribed for more Home Free.
thanks so much for being here friend!
This was a beautiful telling of him. It was sooo good.
This is so beautiful but very sad. Don still has an amazing voice. Our boys as usual are fantastic.❤️❤️❤️❤️
JUST MINDBLOWING 😢😢💞💞😢😢💞💞IT IS A TRUE STORY ABOUT VINCENT VAN GOGH 😢😢😢😢
Don sounds amazing. Home free is the best a Capella group there is, in my opinion. They have the best harmonies. They can move you tears like this, and they can turn around and bring you to tears by laughing you head off.
Great reaction. I'd love to see your reaction to Helplessly Hoping and I Can't Outrun You. Both Home Free masterpieces.
You absolutely can not go wrong with Home Free! I suggest you take a look at their vast catalog and pick 2 or 3 songs you enjoy. See what HF does with them. You probably will be very impressed. Most are.
They do everything from touching to hilarious.

"Go Rest High Upon That Mountain"
The Butts Remix or
HomeFries (HF fans) will come
Don Mclean and Home Free did a great job on this song.
Thank you for playing this song again Wolf
I can't listen to this without tears welling up and chills appearing all over. It opens up my heart so much. ❤❤
Welcome to Home Free. You'll find absolutely amazing covers, originals and collaborations in their very large catalogue.
Yea I was not ready for how beautiful this was.
@@TheWolffAndTheMelody None of us were. Even those of us who love this song from before avd who are avid Home Free fans and know what they are capable of. They still continue to blow my mind almost 10 years in.
What a great reaction. Another song I would recommend is Brothers in Arms. Their harmony in this is unmatched. Hope you will do more Home Free.
I have always loved this song from the first time I heard it. It is so beautiful. To my ear Don McLean sounds even better than when it was released in 1971.
HOME FREE'S cover of Helplessly Hoping by Crosby Stills and Nash is another "quiet" cover.. Welcome to Home Free.
Still lovely. Thanks for reviving, Home Free.
Don Mclean is a legend! He sang "American Pie" (Bye Bye Miss American Pie), an old classic from the 70's which he also did that song with Home Free again just a couple of years ago. They won telly awards for that video so you might want to check it out too.
Special
Beautiful sad song. Always loved it. Like and subscribed ❤🎉
Thanks so much for being here!
Thank you so much for being here friend! That means alot and thank you for the kind words.
Homefree is an accapela group that is AMAZING. Don McLane wrote this about Vincent Van Gogh. Don still sounds amazing.
#DONMCLEAN #HOMEFREE DO YOU REMEMBER AMERICAN PIE? DON MCLEAN WROTE AND PERFORMED THAT SONG. AMONG MANY IN THE '70S
I just subbed to join you on your journey into a capella reactions! Home Free is one of the greatest groups around! 💖
Thanks so much for being here.
Ive subbed hoping for you to do more Home Free, loved your reaction 🏴
thanks so much friend!
❤❤❤
How Don McLean came about writing this song was…..he read a book on the life of Vincent VanGogh…I would bet it was, “Lust For Life”… it’s the life story about him..(I’ve read it, & it’s quite moving). He was so moved & impressed, he wrote this Awesome & Beautiful song ♥️💕🎵🎶🎵💕♥️ I had hoped for several years now that they would do this &, I’m so glad they Did ‼️♥️‼️
Listen to Brothers in Arms, another of their masters.
Just subscribed to enjoy yet another person react to my favorite group. Yes, I
am a Home Fry. It is really as appreciated
that you give over a larger part of your screen to HF's video. They put so much
thought into making their videos that one
would not want to miss any little bit. Other
people have mentioned many HF videos to
react to but you might like "Everybody's Walken This Land". Please listen to the end of all their videos through the end.
Thanks for your reaction and playing it a second time. Wishing you well.
Subscribed for #HomeFree 🤟 🤠 🤟
Welcome in! Its funny Acappella is not normally my thing but this was cool.
I always have mixed feelings when it comes to acappella groups. The music can be beautiful, but I miss the instrumentals. This was a lovely collaboration. "Vincent" is such a beautiful song in its original version, but the soft acappella... lovely. Great reaction!
agreed, this was good. Normally though I pass on acappella groups.
Just subbed hoping for lots more Home Free❤
hey welcome in! Thanks so much for being here.
Please react to Home Free ft. Don McLean singing his famous classic American Pie. really awesome as well!
there is no music like home free. this is only a touch of how good they are. they will touch you with a full range of emotions with their many many songs.
Yea this was so good!
🎶 Cyd
This is really beautiful but you should really check out Freddie Starrs version too. :)
