    loved your video thanks for sharing it with me. If you do not mind me saying so on your over heat problem. Seems you added 2 400 watt solar panels. Since the PWM charge controller was from Renogy . I considered you bought the solar panels there as well. First the 400 watt solar panel shows to be 12vdc at 30amp each output. Notice the output voltage can get as high as 25vdc on there web page. Power formula being P= I X E means power equals current X voltage. This being true then 25vdc X 30 amp would equal a total power of 750 watts total per panel . If you check your charge controller to input power. The problem comes if you hook them up in series the total input voltage is 50 vdc at 30 amps, or in parallel the input voltage will be 12vdc with 60 amp output. Adding another PWM would help but you are loosing power that you could be storing for like at night when there isn't any sun light to produce power. A PWM charge controller will burn off that power it can not use. That is the reason it will get so hot , but adding another PWM was a good Ideal. Just might be nice instead of burning this power off if you could store it and use at night or on over cast ( raining days ). Seems you are producing more power than you can use but can help to heat up camper with fan on it I guess lol . These solar panels sale for around $399 each so a MPPT charge controller could give you a lot of options. I did not mean to take so long and maybe said more than I should have . Just thought it would be nice for you to understand. My wife and I will be headed out to Quartzside after New Years so would be nice to set around a fire and maybe just talk. Either way I wish you well and loved your video you both seem so nice.

      MPPT would be a better solution, definitely. Adding a second controller and splitting panels between them is a workable solution to the issue they had, too.

      Thanks for the info Jeff!
      The ground array is 4x100w panels (older style that are a bit bigger than most newer 100w panels, but they were free!).
      I think where I messed up was I originally hooked the panels up in series, bumping the input voltage up to around 100v. I had it set up like this for maybe 15 minutes before double checking max input voltage for the charger (25v). I unplugged everything and ordered 4-1 branch connectors. After that everything seemed to work pretty well as we made our way out of Utah into Arizona but once we got set up in Quartzsite we finally had full direct sun and the charge controller started smelling and got super hot. I'm not entirely sure if it is a flaw or I fried the Renogy controller when I over volted it for that short time but the smell and the temp readings were not inspiring confidence. Figured better safe than sorry.
      Since putting on the new charge controller it has been working great, at times getting me 20amps of charge just out of the ground array. This combin d with our 600w on the roof with the Renogy MPPT gets us close to 40amps charge at peak hours.
      And yeah, at this point we are over producing solar for sure and could really use another 200ah battery!

    What dice game were you playing? It looks fun!

    • @lukeanddaleigh
      @lukeanddaleigh  9 місяців тому +1

      They just called it dice. The point was to get to 10,000 points first. Ones are 100 points and fives are 50. You have to have 600 points on your turn to get on the board. Super easy to learn and play, and very fun!!

    You might want to make sure your panels are not exceeding the rated voltage of the charge controller.

    My experience with Renogy controllers let me know they are low performance. Victron is far superior. Solar Bills is way prucey..Discount Solar better choice..but of course Amazon beats them both....

      I find Renogy to be a nice budget option for solar. I just view it like buying tools from Harbor Freight, I know I'm not getting Snap On quality but their hammer still hammers and their wrenches still wrench and I won't shed a tear if I lose the tool or break it.
      Understandably, electronics are a bit different (we don't want our rig burning to the ground) so I do my best to make sure I'm not asking more of the equipment than it is able to provide. Multiple fail-safes and regular inspections.
