My mom wouldn’t let me play Battlespire in 1997, so I finally bought it recently and found out why. Straight up naked women. The 90s were a fun time. I do think the game would benefit a lot from a unity port like Daggerfall did, and a bit of a rework.
A port takes a massive amount of work to complete and for a game that doesn't have much replay potential doesn't make too much sense. It's a much better idea to take the assets and recreate the game in daggerfall unity. Granted, there _is_ a unity project to remake redguard in Unity and they've made a lot of progress on the game, but redguard is a whole thing with it's own special game mechanics and a redone graphics pipeline, where as battlespire is upgraged daggerfall
Honestly I liked the Redguard video being such a healthy length. For games as old and under-discussed as that, it's nice to get into the nitty gritty details.
I think my favorite part about the story is the idea of a snubbed bureaucrat from Oblivion helping the apprentice stop the Battlespire invasion purely because he was salty about his faction pulling a stunt like this when they didn't have the manpower to actually hold the position.
22:51 Old lore is that the Empire and by extension Cryodiil was home to a lot of dragons. Found the quote. “The heart of the province being what you think of when you think of a traditional jungle, tumbling down to the fields of large rice paddies that fed the Empire, guarded by Romanesque troops and dragons everywhere. The Imperial City was to be vast, rolling across wetlands and swamps, with large sections lost and overgrown, full of too many cults to count, the oldest temples having obviously been around since the Merethic Era. Then Todd watched The Fellowship of the Ring and mistakes were made.”
I always figured it was less that and more just they wanted the contrast for the story. The Paradise to be lost against the Hell of Oblivion. If Cyrodiil was a fetid swamp and jungle filled with dragons and such as that line suggests... well... video games usually don't make those pleasant places you want to stick around in. Generally they're designed to be as ass as possible for everything from navigation to aesthetics. Even if real life wetlands can be quite beautiful in their own way.
@@hitomisalazar4073 could’ve had more varied environmental areas. Like keep the Gold Coast as it is, and the colovian highlands the same. But make county cheydenhal down to bravil into a more jungle like environment, Blackwood into a swamp down to leyawinn, have marshes and wetlands mixed in. Maybe even an Everglade type environment down south, wetlands around the Imperial city region. Would’ve just been better for it to stick to the lore instead of changing it and retconning it. Even tho in morrowind they mention cyrodiil being a jungle province mainly. Edit: also. They could’ve also make the colovian highlands more like Scottish temperate rain forests, with rolling hills of trees. That would’ve been interesting to see, I don’t recall any game with a temperate rain forest.
@@magnusthered9635 I kinda like some of the changes. The best one being the dragon thing. I feel like retconning the dragons to be a near extinct race that was once worshiped by men a good thing. However I do feel like the oblivion region is kinda a bit bland. It feels like it should really be the crossroads of the biomes of the other provinces as its basically inbetween all the important ones & thus should have some more varied biomes.
This actually still true in modern Lore. To an extent. The description of dragons being all around the Imperial City is a text from Tiber's time. And a book in Skyrim explicitly acknowledges this, stating Tiber offered any Dragons still around sanctuary if they swore loyalty to him. These Dragons eventually also mostly died, but the Empire still had a few in secret.
Hello and greetings from Ukraine (of all places). I loved both analysis pieces with all my heart and I noticed you haven’t published videos in a while. Please do. You’re gonna be one of the top channels on TES with this level of narration and editing. I LOVE IT. Watched redguard like 5 times already. I love you, dude. I need more videos. Your fan, Rita
Can't believe that this is the first time I've seen gameplay of this. // Those side bars and the ads are really funny. You're the right amount of crazy^^
Playing obscure old Elder Scrolls titles so we don't have to. I actually started caring about TES lore solely through your channel. Already looking forward to the next video, no matter how long it takes
22:51 To add to the dragon lore, TES: Blades, which takes place in Cyrodil, is littered with dragon bones. They could have been resurrected once Alduin returned, but I don't think Bethesda cares enough about their own lore to explore those implications, especially when it's in regards to a game most of the fanbase hasn't played.
@@thecatthatgotaway If I recall correctly, they had more of an involvement with 76 than the mobile games. They distanced themselves from 76 after the poor launch. But a solid chunk of the main team's designers were part of the pre-launch development of 76. And I wouldn't consider it non-canon just because the main team didn't work on it. If we did then that would make new vegas non-canon and Kirkbride's post-morrowind writings canon. For both good and ill, the current canon exists amongst the officially licensed products -- retcons and all. Unless it's publicly denied like Tactics and Brotherhood
Im probably the only person who loved this game back in the 90's. Even today, of all the games in the series I think its the most interesting as far as lore goes. I also love the look. The gameplay....its not great. I'll admit it. But everything is very enjoyable.
The biggest problem with this game is that its the only original Elder scrolls game you have to pay for on steam. Like please just make it free & let the modders port it to Unity so that we can play it easier.
I just had to stop the video and comment on how you handled the topic of sexism in gaming early on in the video. I really loved the humility you displayed in explaining both the importance of it as a topic and also your inability to speaking meaningfully on it. That was a really good way to bring attention to the topic without focusing too much on it. I think that was a fantastic piece of script writing!
Oh dear, has my video on this game been dethroned? I'm yet to watch much of this video but I admire the dedication to this bizarre little curiosity. Curious what conclusions a 2 hour video will come to at the end, but I don't want to spoil it for myself. Personally, I still like this game more than Oblivion. It's still not particularly good, though. Just a archetypical 90s dungeon crawler with Elder Scrolls trappings. Best dungeons in the franchise by a significant margin, though that ain't saying much.
This might very well be my favorite long-form video game review. Im going to share this with my friends, at least the ones who aren't scared of skeletons and scantily clad women. Which isn't that many people to be honest but I hope you appreciate the effort.
so happy this mess has a full retrospective. usually people just do the old youtube gamer "uuugh this game, its bad, here's some half-assed reasons why god look at this it sucks I don't wanna play it anymore" whinge.

As much of a bad idea it might be, i would love it if they kinda brought the battlespire back, maybe as a questline or a dlc in the future. I doubt it would be pulled off fantastically, but the idea is so damn cool
I think the combat-heavy Icewind Dale series improved on the long and meandering Baldurs Gate series. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE both, but IWD really captivated me.
54:38 I feel like this isn't true. It has been a consistent part of Hircine's character. He hasn't been dumbed down. Even in Skyrim, you can directly disobey him and he is pleased to see the balance of power get shifted.
Like a Patrician Light, nice. Even did his sidebar ads gag. I liked my time with Battlespire (and Redguard, for that matter;) but then, I played them when they came out, and this is better than a lot of dungeon crawlers at the time by virtue of at least having a setting with lore and not just... you know. Going to the next level cause that's where the level ending tile takes you.
Can appreciate the effort to show off a quite frankly Awful 90s PC game instead of spending 1 hour 48 minutes recapping the mage guild subplots to me and telling me they're unfinished. You should try other Gold Box Era PC games like Baldurs Gate or Thief or something that's be interesting
Dungeons were legit the worst part of Daggerfall (Main Quest ones excluded, they were fun as shit), I got my fun out of the game with arranging my house gia mods and defrauding banks
My ears are ringing thanks to the ending. Please don't do that again for a cheap joke. People don't watch retrospectives to be jumpscared. And in general, people prefer to subscribe to youtubers that can at least keep their audio balanced.
I fucking love the names of places in this game. They were cooking with “weir gate”, “shade perilous”, and “slipstream realm”.
