If I could rewrite history I'd make Matt Jones redshirt his freshman year so that he could have had his senior year on the same team as DMac and Felix. Could you imagine?
Truth is we’ve had so many star studded foot ball players with natural ability and so many incompetent coaches who could just watch them win and then takes the credit as coach A few exceptions Kenny Hatfield and Lou Holtz (they were fired by Broyles for treading too close to winning it all and Frank couldn’t share that crown Matt Jones would have won the Heismann also Dmac or Felix if they had a respected competent coach
I have been a Razorback fan for 66 years and was a walk-on at wide receiver in 1974-75. Matt is my favorite Razorback ever. He was so fun to watch. #1 in my book.
Matt Jones was a baller for real. He knew he could run and he did. Could you imagine him playing with McFadden? He was the most exciting quarterback we've ever had. Proud of what he did
Put him on today's top SEC teams and his stats would be every bit as ridiculous as Jayden Daniels ' were this year... probably more so because of his combo if size speed and the fact that defenses were actually really allowed to play back when he was playing compared to today's game which is way more finesse, rules wise.
Most exciting player I’ve ever seen in person..looked like he was jogging while leaving db’s in the dust...never seen anything like it for someone that size
Reminds me a little of Herschel Walker. Looks so slow east and west, but when the shoulderpads turn north, those long 6'8" long strides turn into pure speed.
Matt was so casual, lol. Watching him live, esp in those marathon O.T. games was nerve racking and amazing. Some of most fun games I've ever watched. Thanks for memories, Matt Jones, and thank you for the video, WarMachine.
The greatest running QB to ever wear the hog, he was a phenomenal athlete and just a baller. Trust me folks there’s not a single sport this guy couldn’t play and be good at. We love you Matt Jones.
Seeing the highlights reminds me of how talented Richard Smith, George Wilson, and De'Cori Birmingham were. Really glad I got a chance to see this team live when they played South Carolina at War Memorial here in Little Rock in the early 2000's.
Without a doubt, the most exciting QB in Razorbacks history! I've often thought, what if Jones had been at Arkansas with Darren McFadden?! The Hogs would have been murdering teams!
PS I was like six and coach nutt led the whole team over to me in the hog walk and he was the first one to come say wassup that’s why it was so exciting lol
My dad took me to my first Razorback game in 04 I think it was against ranked Georgia in Fayetteville. Didn’t get the win but I’ll always remember the Matt Jones Era at Arkansas.
Man this dude had imo all the tangables to be a quarterback. He has touch and his accuracy and patience.. Then if he chooses to run he has the speed. Then he was good at receiver. This guy is a gifted athlete. Whats his story.
Cocaine possession felony, then never got back to his peak. Sad too, because the year he got busted, he was finally proving why the jaguars picking him in the first round wasn't a mistake. He had 39 catches, 468 yards, and five tds, in just six games. He got busted, and suspended, and when he came back, he just wasn't into it anymore.
Matt Jones could've been like Tennessee Titans QB... Cause he could throw the ball really good and that speed he had running.. But the NFL at the time didn't see it like that they wanted him to be a receiver man I hated that he didn't get a chance to be a QB in the NFL I think he would've last a little bit longer and probably not got into that other stuff..
Yeah the NFL teams still wanted pure pocket passers they didn't want any dual threats. Even though there was Vick, McNair, McNabb, VY, Aaron Brooks, Slash, Steve Young, etc. in the 90's to mid-2000's but only few NFL coaches knew what to do w there athletic abilities. Majority of coaches at that time were too close-minded to work w athletic QBs.
Matt decided to play wr. He tore his labrum his freshman year, and never got it fixed on his throwing shoulder. That's why after his freshman year, he wasn't a great passer, but was competent. There were NFL teams that wanted to draft him at QB, he said so, but it wasn't until like the fourth round, then they wanted him to have surgery, be out another five months. Or, he could go as a first round wr, and get first round money, so that's what he did.
I have to say Matt Jones and Joe Ferguson made razorbacks history and fun to watch. I was a Houston But fan too. Running back Darren McFadden was awesome. Matt would make you Miss him and use those legs to outrun you
I don’t think people realize just how insane that catch at 11:11 was. Receiver was completely covered, and Matt threw a rope from 40+ yds away into heavy coverage. Tbh, imho, his best throw ever at UArk.
Ryan Mallet/KJ Jefferson, Matt Jones, Treylon Burks, Rocket Sanders, Dmac, Felix Jones, Jarius Wright, Greg Child's, Cobi Hamilton, Hunter Henry and Joe Adams on offense, Jake Bequette, Bumper pool, Steve Atwater, Drew Sanders, Jaylin Catalon, Detrich Wise on defense on the same team......what a fantastic dream I am having!!!
They talk about #TimTebow or #JohnnyManziel WELL TO RAZORBACK 🐗 FANS HE WAS OUR GUY, ALWAYS A THRILL TOO WATCH, 6'6 240 4.3 SPEED, HE WAS A BIG PLAY WAITING TOO HAPPEN! #9 #MattJones THAT DUDE!!!
@Warmachine - I have been wanting to ask you if you could find material on Brandon Burlsworth? I feel like we don't represent him enough as the greatest walk-on. Absolutely love this idea brother. Keep up the good work!
White boy Vince young..right before Vince young 🤣 Those 2 quarterbacks are the ones I think of when it comes to just casually scrambling around & scoring 60 yard rushing tds or throwing bombs with everything they did looking so unique & unorthodox.
the thing that made jones so dangerous wasn't his passing, it wasn't his running, it was the fact that he always stayed calm enough to know when to do what. Unlike someone like Ryan Mallett that started getting in his own head and making mistakes, jones was always just calmly playing chess. It was probably the drugs... but hey.
Fred Marshall QB 1964 Nat'l championship team; John Brittenum QB undefeated team in regular season SWC Champion 1965; Scott Bull QB SWC & Cotton Bowl championship team 1974 & 75; Brad Taylor QB 1981-84 not quite as mobile but not much less than the others went to 3 bowls; QB Quinn Grovey all century QB for the program won 2 SWC titles he was uncontainable. Don't know what his 40 time was but he could do it all and might have been a shade quicker (not faster) than Matt. QB Gregg Thomas 1985-88 went to 4 bowl games was pretty close he could throw some but not quite as good as a true dual threat QB. Just wanted to give him an honorable mention because he was a fall-back QB for Ken Hatfield because an elite QB from pine bluff named Eric Mitchell that would be a 5 star recruit today, decided to go to Oklahoma. Coach Hatfield had to fall back on Greg until he could get a QB of Grovey's talent to come to run the flexbone. Greg was not as good but he did a very respectable job for us till Quinn got here. From an ole timer (57) hope this helps.

That would have been epic...to much speed in the back field.
@@mht2166 It sure would have screwed up many an opponent's game plan.
& Hillis
Or we put him at wide receiver with pro QB Tavaris Jackson throwing to him.

6’6” and ran a sub-4.4 forty yard dash. Dude was an absolute freak of nature. In the mid 2000’s the NFL just didn’t know what to do with him.
It did bro Matt was a 1000 yard receiver for the jags and his nose got in the way.
@@SampleDeezeNutz Matt Jones career;166 rec 2153 yds 15 TD He never had a 1000 yard season...EVER!!!
@@mrtnt3462 as I said. He was a 1000 yard receiver. Until his nose got in the way. I know he never hit 1000. But he was that type of guy.
Drugs are a hell of a drug.
He wouldve been 1 rounder in the NFL draft in todays game for sure
Matt Jones was a baller for real. He knew he could run and he did. Could you imagine him playing with McFadden?
He was the most exciting quarterback we've ever had. Proud of what he did
Brandon Allen is up there too!
Matt Jones! I see his name and I get hyped! One of greatest QBs in College Football history. 🔥
Let’s not get carried away
The greatest in Arkansas history definitely.
He was definately an elite dual threat qb that could do it all! His speed was unreal!🐗🐗

Such a great player to be in Razorback Football history. Watching his games were the first I remember growing up! He’s a DUDE!
Same
Same. His dad was my arkansas history teacher and coleman in van buren arkansas
Matt Jones was like Hunter Renfrow. All opposing fans felt like he was at Arkansas for 10 years
Matt was so casual, lol. Watching him live, esp in those marathon O.T. games was nerve racking and amazing. Some of most fun games I've ever watched. Thanks for memories, Matt Jones, and thank you for the video, WarMachine.

WHY would anyone "thumbs down" this video and player???? That was awesome to watch no matter whos your favorite team
Thanks for posting and sharing. Always enjoy those magical moments in Razorback history. Go Hog's!!!!
Thank you so much for uploading this. He was my sports hero growing up
Imagine if we had him, Dmac, Peyton and Felix all in the same backfield...so close from happening
Matt The Ghost Jones!!!!!!! The Best All Around Athlete I've Ever Seen!!! You can't tackle a ghost!!!
Forgotten how good he was. I'm a lsu fan and I loved watching him.
HE SHOOK MY HAND BEFORE THAT OLE MISS 04 GAME LOVE MATT JONES FOREVER
PS I was like six and coach nutt led the whole team over to me in the hog walk and he was the first one to come say wassup that’s why it was so exciting lol
The most underrated baller in Arkansas history…..big, fast and smart and never rattled.
Not sure what I liked best, seeing these highlights or hearing Paul calling the games.

I think he could have been a beastly tight end as well with a little more weight put on.
He makes my all AR starting offense for sure. I was in high school watching this dude like I WANNA BE YOUUUUU!
One of the most exciting players in Arkansas history. Jones would be a super stud in todays offense.
Greatest athlete in Razorbacks history, end of story.
Matt Jones and Houston Nutt are my favorite Razorbacks
That first Matt Jones dunk on the slobber hog court might be the hardest clip I’ve ever seen
Can't believe this guy played Quarterback in football and played basketball at the same time. Just talented, plus cardio for days!
My favorite Razorback of all time! Unbelievable playmaker.
I have to say Matt Jones and Joe Ferguson made razorbacks history and fun to watch. I was a Houston But fan too. Running back Darren McFadden was awesome.

With the defense we have this year, imagine if we had a QB like Jones. Hopefully Franks can dial things in a little more this year.
13;50 the best radio announcer ever
Great memories!!! Matt Jones was a bad boyyy
My favorite Arkansas quarterback.

Matt Jones, the longest stride. The size of him and his strides made it hard to get a good hold of him, even in close proximity.
Greatest Arkansas qb ever, or at least most fun to watch.
If it's 2 people that we Hog Fans love, it's Matt Jones and Darren McFadden! #WooMFnPig

Man Jason Peter's has some great hands. Crazy to think he's been playing in NFL all these years
I long for the days when Arkansas brought excitement to football in Arkansas
I guess you have been in a coma the last three years. The Texas game was the loudest I have heard the stadium. It was sold out or damn close.
This dude was ahead of his time. He 6’6 white dude who played qb like Josh Allen, but also wr, and also ran sub 4.4
Hey warmachine, do you think you could possibly find footage of Matt jones’ 40 yard dash at the combine?

I'm going to say this Matt Jones could have been the modern day ARCHIE MANNING!!!!!!!!!
Most exciting QB in Razorback history
Great video! Does the announcer at :51 say Jones is from Abilene, TX?
Yeah, he was from Fort Smith though
As a pig fan from fort smith, arkansas this video is epic AF
Was expecting a short video of a few highlights, wow.
If he was drafted now they’d give him a taysom hill type roll
He was so good he made people think HDN could coach football for a while.
One of the Qbs Ark ever had who Matt Jones!!
Matt Jones lives by me
Man he had that long stride. Dude is flat out flying and he looks like he's just out for a jog.
Yes, that Jason Peters
Crazy, isn't it?

more highlights than mcfadden and felix jones combined
He's like Tim Tebow except he was 6'6" and ran a sub 4.4 forty. 😳

Some quality nostalgia. How innocent we all were Before The Virus.
Oh my... is all I got to say
I'd bet money that Matt Jones was one of our last qbs to beat a Nick Saban coached team.
Jones in 2002 and Robby Hampton in 2000 the only ones to do it.
@WoodVille bro here's your Matt Jones reaction video!
He wasnt from abeline. He went to my hs in fsm arkansas
Yea I've never been able to figure out why he said that Jones was from Texas lol
I wonder where he is now. I can only hope he’s doing well
Matt Jones was a freak.

He was so talented and such a great guy I'll never forget meeting him at a church camp while he was a hog
I almost got beat up by him once (for a good reason). When you have an angry Matt Jones looking down ar you, he looks much taller than 6'6".
Hey Ravens do y’all see Matt Jones this is who y’all need
You know he got drafted in 2005, right?

I'm going to say this what if this guy was at Virginia Tech would he have been compared with Michael Vick?????

Was he ever considered for the heisman?
Not that I'm aware of.
Even when we were only so-so... We had ticket sellers
Matt Jones was fun to watch
Joe Ferguson was #1
But Matt was so awesome
But the way the way he carried the ball was a worry
He was the original TIM TEBOW!!!!!!!
Love hearing Paul Eells ,but could have done without The Nutt!!!
Not enough ball for the talent!
