- Fall in Alaska provides a bounty of wonderous food from the land. We forage high up in the mountains for Blueberries and Huckleberries, and low down in the woods for Winter Chanterelles and High Bush Cranberries. Back at the cabin we create delicious treats and canned food for the winter.
~Jam Bar Recipe ~
Dough Ingredients
3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup softened unsalted butter
4 tbs coconut oil
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp kosher salt
*1/4 rolled oats (added to second portion of dough)
Filling Ingredients
2 cups blueberries
3 tbs maple syrup
1/2 tsp orange zest
OR 1-2 cup(s) your choice of berry jam

Alaskans are incredibly territorial of their berry picking spots. My parents have had the same mail lady nearly 30 years, and once they asked where she went to pick berries and she didn’t talk to them for 3 months! 😂

hahah that seems a little extreme considering there are literally berries everywhere up here!! my backyard is filled with blueberries and raspberries during the summer. They're like weeds up here, can't make enough pies or jelly before they're back!

I know, right? I had just discovered their channel because we got chickens & then they had to give away their chickens etc & move.
I live in the country on a few acres but have city/urban people here on our street that built huge houses & think we should be subject to HOA rules & called the county out on us 5-6 times.
But last time we allowed the inspector in our barn/garage to take pictures proving it was a livable space & the county no longer records their complaints.
I so wish we lived on 10-20 acres in Alaska.

Watching Beau reminded me of my mom's little American Eskimo dog, when it was just a puppy, eating blueberries off the bush when we were picking. The dog and Mom are long gone now, but it was still a great memory.
Just had surgery and can’t lift or do any physical work for a few weeks so I’m foraging along with y’all “mentally” 😂 thanks for taking me along ! 🥰😍 hugs to those pups!
You two just amaze me on your survival skills, and living off the land. Arielle was right when she said you learn by getting out there and then research. Bo amazes me on how he makes up for being his laid back self by foraging and fishing. Bandit, however, is out running a marathon and hunting.

I've been using this recipe for over 20 years! It's from the back of the Martha White Flour bag! I have used every kind of jam known to man to make it - even used Nutella once! It's a family favorite and at Thanksgiving it's made with homemade cranberry sauce! Oh! I'm getting the calender right now! LOVE your show! You and Erin from Wild Wonderful Off Grid are the SMARTEST ladies on UA-cam!

The cranberry juice was so vibrant Arielle. At least neither of you will suffer with urinary tract infections while you continue to drink it. It is also high in vitamin C and contains lots of antioxidents and stops free radicals from damaging cells and DNA in your body and can help fight against cancer, heart disease and also help fight off infections and can delay or reduce the severity of chronic disease. Just be a little careful if you suffer with acid reflux as cranberry juice is mildly acidic and can temporarily worsen the reflux when you drink the juice a lot. You hit the mother lode of mushrooms this year and I cannot wait to see what you create with them. Hugs to you both and the fur babies, Michelle
Have been watching you guys forever. A couple of times a week my wife yells out "there is a new Alaska on" We normaly go up to northern Quebec and eastern Algonquin park in Ontario to pick. I don't think that we have ever seen so many blueberries as we did on your last video. I have never been there, but my Dad drove a motorhome up there and told me that you really have to be there to witness the beauty. Thanks for bringing us so close to everything that is so breathtaking.

Love fresh, mountain blueberries. We used to pick them in the Ozarks of Arkansas. Nothing like fresh blueberry pancakes with blackberry syrup.

When using the blueberry rake you get some leaves. Pour the Barrie’s into a second bucket in front of a fan. The leaves will blow away while the berries are heavier and fall into the second bucket.we pick them in Grande Cache AB. Canada. Works great.

In Eastern Canada. Blueberry Season is in July in Ontario. August- mid September in Nova Scotia.
Cranberries are harvested in October. Just before Thanksgiving.
Glad you were able to harvest so many blueberries this year. So late in the Season. They sure love the rain and plump up from it.

In your neck of the tundra have you come across a Honey Berry aka haskap. Looks like a fat long-gated blueberry. Also grows in acidic tundra soil. Sweet-tart in bush form, great for fresh eating, juice and conserve, When mushrooms are as abundant as are other wild acorns, blueberries, honeyberries, and crab apples, we have learned here in the Highlands of Appalachia that we will have a gnarly winter. This year our bees have produced the most honey we have seen in twenty years. Thank you for sharing your adventures and learned knowledge.

Time flies! Free food is always the best, and wow so much this year! We used to get polk stock and ramps with my aunt, it was fun walking around and discovering things as we went! It looks like the dogs also liked it😊

When I was a kid we had turkey's tongue and hickory chickens out in the hills (turkeys tongue is like bean sprouts and hickory chickens are morel mushrooms) spent many hours searching for yummy food like that. Good memories

Love all the blueberries you found!! We picked in North west Ontario this fall, they were big and beaurtiful as well. My husband and I picked 10 gal in parts of two days, Amazing!
I remember picking huckleberries with my grandparents who raised me. Despite the fact I ate my weight in berries, Grandma still managed to collect enough for later use. I also remember that finding a patch of wintergreen was so exciting.
Old timers say that when there is a heavy crop of berries - a hard winter is ahead. That nature provides for the animals. I wonder if it will be true. Always enjoy your channel.

Looking over at my 2022 calendar right now. Love the photos you chose for it, will be picking up the 2023 for sure. Only one of the years I worked up there did I get to see the tundra change colors in the fall and it's absolutely gorgeous.
