Believers see all the positives of religion and are often blind to even the potential for negative association with their beliefs, willingly or otherwise. Most people don't like to have their beliefs challenged. It's easier to just say "I'm a believer of XYZ" and accept the general belief that it's enough to make someone a good person than really getting into the deeper foundations of morality.

Apostasy isn’t punishable by death anywhere in the Quran. Not even remotely. It says on the contrary, “Let him believe who wishes so, and let him disbelieve who wishes so.” (18:29). Punishable it is by death in the Bible though (Deuteronomy 13:6-11). You must know the facts first before making authoritative assertions, pls.

A much better advice is to read Syed Wasim Rizvi's recent booklet "Mohammed". You will get all the facts and supporting historical evidence why islam was never about forming a new religion, but a subterfuge to setting up a gang of looters and giving it a semblance if legitimacy.
