OMG!!! I remember when this episode aired. I recored it and played it over and over until popped my damn VHS tape. This honestly was one of the greatest top speed tests ever!
It is so coincidental that you say that. I know this comment is over 4 years old and you may never see it but I got to say that if you do see it I was just sitting here telling someone the same thing. I recorded this on a VHS tape I remember telling my mom that I really needed a VHS tape to record on so she wouldn't found me a blank one that we used in our camcorders back then and I recorded it Saturday morning on whatever Channel it came on I forget the name of the channel I think it was the Speed Channel if I remember right I can't remember what cable we had back then but I watch the same episode over and over probably three or four dozen times on that VHS tape I remember drooling over every car that I saw on there. It's so awesome that you said that and I'm sorry about your VHS tape but thank God for UA-cam right?! 😂
@@bigbryan166 This was also my favorite show the C5 corvette was my dream car but I was not old enough to drive. Even if I was old enough my wallet was empty and not a single penny to purchase a C5. Props to the Lotus...Always the contemporary underdog to the more exotic Ferrari, it did Lotus proud this day...A great engine...a great body design...and that horrid Renault transmission...Still, I just love that car...Makes my Elise look like a Prius...But my M6 however...well, that is a different story.
Shawn Weed I totally agree with you on that. Back in the nineties the Lotus was on my list of must-have supercars. The way the Lotus looks with that wedge body and the 5.7 L twin turbocharged V8 just made it so cool to me that someone added power to an already powerful car by putting turbos on it. It was always one of my favorite supercars of that era and I actually saw one at a gas station in a small town on the interstate close to where I live and when it pulled up I froze dead in my tracks and the guy that got out was talking on an old-school clamshell cell phone that wasn't so old school the time it was black with a tan interior and the paint was so beautiful that I could see my reflection I could have shaved out of that paint job. A truly beautiful car and if I ever have the money I'll get one because I always liked the underdog or the outcasts attitude behind that car it wasn't as famous as a Ferrari or Lamborghini or as well known rather but in its own right it was an outstanding car
Oh and on a lighter note dude your Elise is a Prius. LOL it's got a Toyota 2.4 vvt-i engine in it so which drivetrain is the same as a Corolla or a low option Camry but I don't say that to be mean I just say that to point out the fact. I'm being sarcastic which is so hard to convey in a comment
hmmm I had my 98 C5 hit GPS recorded 169 mph.. amazing that we have cars you can buy that will do almost 80 mph faster than the fastest speed recorded there..
the corvette drove home getting good gas mileage and didn't break down. the vipers are junk dodge durango looking interior and gauge/cluster-radio etc.
I love the idea behind the Viper. Such a simple and effective concept. But holy crap...have you ever taken a close look at one? The build quality is crap. Looks like a poorly assembled kit car. Sad.....
Yes. Very underated Ferrari. Non Turbo, N/A 3.5 Liter V8 Engine. Man that thing could haul but to a little over 180 MPH very quickly. Still very fast, even by 2019 standards.
@@extremedrivr There is no such thing as an "R35 Skyline GTR." So im not sure what you are talking about. And im not sure if you are ignorant, or actually an idiot!!! Because CLEARLY this video is WAY WAY older than the R35 GTR (which is the car i assume you are talking about) So how could they bring that car out to run against these when they hadn't even started development on it. Seeing as it didn't get released for another 15-18 years.... And even if they could use a time machine and bring it back to compete, it still would have lost to the Viper and lotus. Oh and the R34 Skyline, even if they could bring that back in time and over from japan, the ONLY cars it would have beat would be the 2 convertibles..... Because despite what the internet idiots say..... The Skyline GTR is not even CLOSE to being the fastest or best car ever!!! Its actually extremely average for a sports car, very heavy as well......
@@raymondnewbill5294 I meant the R34 not the latest GTR sorry. And yeah there were plenty of other cars faster than that at the time. The Viper and Corvette Callaways and Lingenfelter Corvettes. Also Lotus Esprit V8s as well. So yeah no arguments from me.

F355 still the best sounding V8 Ferrari ever made
To this day, this is one of the best, if not the best, Motor Trend comparisons. I have this recorded on vhs.
dobbins2550 same here
Same here. Lol
love this guys voice.... now i know what my viper tops out at.... god bless america!!!
back when motor trend was good
And it`s quick even by todays standards and pretty good value for money. But the SOUND...just love it!
192 in the Viper!? I had no idea the older vipers could do that. I thought they were done at 175.
some were clocked recently doing 195 on a 2.x mile stretch.

I had this edition back in the day. It's neat to be able to go back and watch this.
I also still have it on tape
great stuff
I used to love watching the car shows on TNN every Saturday morning.
Who here in 2023 would like to see this test re-done? Same cars, same track, but twenty five years later!
I still remember this issue, one of my all-time favorites. Wish I could find it... I may have lost it.
I believe I still have it!!
Ferrari 355 is bad ass. Great looks, great handling, and pretty damned good performance.
I always liked that one for sure. Was always my favorite of the less expensive Ferraris. That is next to the all time classic, 308.
Too bad they are a maintenance nightmare

@@bigbryan166 And a correction on that Lotus V8. It was a 3.5 Liter TT Lotus designed V8. Not a 5.7 like you stated.
The only Ferrari I'd consider owning. I remember seeing this episode at home with my parents.
Well to be fair. I would not mind the 355 and a 308. Both of those are sweet looking cars.
And who didnt like good ol Classic, Magnum PI.
Wait. The "lowly" base Porsche 911 Carrera topped out at 175 mph? God damn. Who needs a Carrera S or even a Turbo?
Sounds like Horse Shit that thing probably tops out at 165, and the F355 probably more like 195
Radar confirmed. These guys were legitimate back in the day, and so were 996's@@emanuelefasanofasano3814
Lotus is an OG beast! That platform is from the 1970s and still beat the "new" Ferrari!

replace Water pump gasket before buying my 98 gts.

The lotus was the underdog here. Just don't do any hard shift haha
What test track is this ?
*"World's Greatest Drag Race" 1998..?*
A C4 ZR1 would beat all these except for the Viper ?
Don`t forget the sound of that engine.
Is the vette a auto or manual
C. Van Tune, that can't be real, lol. I have so many programs recorded on VHS.
Should have parked the Viper in such a way that it wittles on the others.

Go cry about your loss.
I still have this magazine 😁
A c5 needs 850 bhp to run 240. Perfect car for the money to for that kind of speed.
355 sounds best by VERY VERY far then the Lotus
Bad ass they need to do too speed tests like this more today!
watching in 2018
Well very true, can't leave that out :)

Very sad
355 still wins, and I bet it even drove away under it own power after the test, lol.
love that one
the viper took a leak he he!
at least the corvette dosent require the engine to be taken out every 3 years for maintenance ...
Agreed!!
1:12 🤫😵🤩
Honda Prelude of that era had a higher top speed than the m roadster and the Panoz lol.
355 is very fast because is only a NA 3.5 engine.

The Viper show that it was not design for that speed. Todays super cars have come a long way.
yep
Thus the term "Dodge it!"" Water hose and something or the drive shaft breaks so you have to Dodge it not run into it! F355 far better!
why didnt i realize how corney the 90s were
