Does the LG V40 sound WORSE than the V30?

  • A mini controversy brewing for the LG V40. Many are concerned that headphone playback on the V40 doesn't sound as good as output on the V30. If only there were a way we could test that. Like, with cables, connected to some kind of audio recording hardware. And it would be REALLY cool if we also had a screen that could show us those recordings so we could compare. Man. That sure would be cool...

LG G7 and V30 are identical audiowise. The ESS SABRE DAC is an all in one device. Designed that way so any application using their chip is ideal, no cost cutting of external components in low cost applications as it is a system on chip, including their proprietary amplifier that switches between line, high line level, standard headphone and high impedance headphones where the output voltage can exceed the battery using the built in voltage boost circuit. The LG G7 and V30 are identical... and both are #1. That exact same DAC is used in Sennheiser's $3500 reference headphone amplifier and also used in McIntosh $10,000 cinema amplifiers. V40 appears to have just the conventional DAC, so yeah... it is going to be like every other phone with a standard DAC.

    • @brbix4005

Still, it is better to use the DAC with Neutron MP than with stock player, as the stock player sucks...

JuanBagnell It's hard to imagine that LG's V series won't have them, unless future phones get so small that they physically can't put them in. At that point, we'll be able to get super lightweight daps that run very well.

Until recently I did not know much about sound until I tried a fiio player with excellent headphones and it was something totally new and incredible. Most people have not heard audio in high definition and do not know what it is until you hear it. In addition, for the common people it is difficult to gather files, headphones and quality player. Funny thing is that many people love and praise the V30 even without knowing that there's a high impedance mode that can be triggered and it gives even better sound and power. I own the V10, V20 and V30+ also the G7, and the most powerful amp is in the V30+, to trigger the high impedance mode so i can give enough juice to my Shures SE846s, i use the Shure volume level attenuator that was included with the SE500 series. If i plug that little thing to my LG V30+ and then the Shure cable, it triggers the monster that phone has inside. So if you want to have a monster set up without having to carry external amps and more weight, simply use the V30 and the little cable that triggers the high impedance. Note, the older V series and the G7 also have the impedance mode that can be triggered.

Stumbled across this, excellent piece. Given that our perception of sound quality is directly affected by volume this almost certainly accounts for peoples subjective reports when they are matching the number on the volume slider, instead of the actual volume output. I agree, LGs implementation in the V40 with regards to volume gradation is absolutely an improvement.

Thank you Juan for testing this out. I thought I was the only one who noticed the difference in the volume stepping and volume levels from the V20, V30 and V40. In my experience the volume range was the loudest on the V20. I could listen to my Hip Hop at a pretty loud level AND still have 5 to 6 more clicks left on the V20's volume slider. The V30's volume slider was a few clicks shorter and the same is true for the V40. Music still sounds good but you dont have those extra few notches on the volume slider like you did with the V20. I would like to see LG add 3 to 4 more steps on G7, V40 and newer phones. Your video on listening to loud music was much appreciated. Keep up the good work.

I thought it was just me. I noticed a difference in the sound between the two when listening to music on my TRN V80 earphones. It was subtle, but the V30 just sounded more immersive and sharp at the same volumes. You can't argue with graphs, but I definitely noticed a difference. Does the V30s dac only work when high impedence headphones are plugged in? I think something may be wrong with mine. I literally just noticed after a year. When I got it I noticed no change in audio output with the dac on. For some reason, yesterday I plugged my earphones in (as I always do) and at 35 it was even too loud. I was absolutely shocked. Get the MonoPrice 1060 planar headphones. Only $300 and are about the best you will find for the money, comparable to $1000 units. Works wonderfully with the SABRE DAC and amplifier used in the V20, V30 and G7. V40 mentions a quad DAC, but doesn't mention it being ESS SABRE device.
Sorry to ramble, but with these time aligned headphones, you will finally be able to experience the magic of the SABRE DAC. Sound goes from the center of your skull to completely surrounding you. It is not a DSP effect, just the result of precisely timed drivers so your brain can properly reconstruct the original studio soundstage, not easy to accomplish. With my G7, the standard DAC sounds great, but lacks the soundstage. Enable the quad SABRE DAC, the sound envelopes you, not to mention 130dB dynamic range.

    Hello.
I´m currently searching for a really good Android Device which i would use for as only an Music Player. Of course it would using external speakers so i can hear the music in all my Appartment. So my question is, would this LG V30 be good for that or do you know any other good Android Devices for that?
I read about the "Razer Phone" and the "Samsung Galaxy S9". The first is not really that investment, cause as i said i only need it for Audio and not for Gaming on a Phone. Don´t know much about the "Samsung S9".
Remember, i only use the Phone at home for Audio and not for Games. So it´s definitly mainly a Music Player. Also is it even necsessary to have good Audio Speakers on a Phone, when you would output the sound to external speakers anyway?
    Thanks for any answer.
By the way, for my Setup i would like to have the Music Files from a external Drive which is not connected to the Phone (because the Drive Capacity is too big to be supported by Android), which means the Files themselfes are not coming from the Phone itself and rather the Router´s Harddrive over Wifi. Would that downgrade somehow the quality even more? There are all FLAC Files but i don´t know.
    So basically:
Router Harddrive > over Wifi > LGV30 > External Speakers

Hey Juan, I'm an internal speaker file. No headphones or buds or wireless speaker. I like crisp, loud, clear, front facing stereo speakers, wanter. I had the Moto X pure, the axon 7, and the Alcatel idol 4s. The 4s and 7 had what I love on a phone. Clear, pretty loud, quality sound output that i think a good phone should have.
After the 4s, went to boot looping death, I debated,,,, LG or Pixel 2 XL. Obviously a price range thing. What I could afford. The LG g7 sounded good but just wasn't sure. The boom box deal worried me. I like stereo. Anyway, choose the Pixel 2 XL. Mostly for stereo speakers in front,,and updates.
I can honestly say the 4s and the Axon 7 blow these speakers away for loudness and real stereo effect and clearity.

What I don't understand is, if LG can work so hard creating a great dac for external speakers and head phones,,, the are so lacking in desire to put out a nice set of front facing stereo speakers? The press for having a so beautiful a screen, for gaming or video media, yet putting these gimmicks like boom box sounds, and as u said, a bottom firing speaker to boot.
When HTC had their front firing stereo speakers, I thought for sure others would follow. But nooo,,, everything but. Then even HTC shot themselves in the foot. My 4s had actually the clearest sounds with true stereo sound of all my stereo phones. Even this 2 xl is tinny and lacking quality. Funny. All the good stereo phones were all under 450. Now a 900 dollar phone can't compete.
I like your vids, cause you truly test the sounds of devices. To me sounds are as important as camera ladeda. Seems that s what everyone goes on about. Yet, year after year, the reviews are the same. Great, but low light , not great. To much this,to little of that. But the lenses multiple, and the gimmicks keep on,keeping on. And sound stays the same.
