LG V40 ThinQ Long Term Review: Is my favorite phone right for you?

  • The tricky thing about being a tech reviewer, this phone is likely going to be listed as my personal favorite phone of the year. At the same time however, this might be one of the more difficult V series phones to recommend to general consumers. The V40 requires a little more "pro and con" nuance when talking about which gadget might be the perfect fit for you.
    Using it as my daily driver for weeks now, does the V40 live up to LG's claims? Will it deliver some crossover appeal? Let's take that deep dive!

    The charge port on my V20 fried so I upgraded to the V40 and... wow. It's amazing. I ALWAYS protect my phones with Otterbox Defender cases. Yeah, it hides the beauty and makes the phone so much thicker, but it's saved my phones SO many times. And when I take the case off, I THEN appreciate the look & feel. For a minute. Then I put it back in the case.

    Somehow I unintentionally ended up being a LG fan boy. First it was my LG tone platinums for apt x hd, then had to get the LG v30 to use that codec, and now I'm going to get the LG pk5. Then I got a LG 4k tv but then I had to get a LG 4k player since they're the ones that has Dolby Vision, and why not go full circle.
    Now LG oled TV's are going to include WiSa technology so it can stream Dolby hi-fi audio to home theater systems wirelessly. Seems they care the most about audio/video which I'm all for.

    LG makes fine phones. I got a new V35 on sale from Amazon, it's that interim model that one carrier requested from LG - no notch, no telephoto lens. It's a great device, comparable to Samsung. Beautiful screen, and the audio system is the absolute best. They're slow to update software, but what I have is still super fast six months later. Glad you're staying on top of the LG line.

    Thank you for being the guy who goes so far to review LG phones. The V10 was my choice after Samsung gave me no option for removable battery after my Note Edge. The wide angle rear camera moved me to the V20. Now I have a V30 with a sealed battery, but the manual camera controls and wide angle and hifi quad dac keep me here. I know that for me, as someone who listens to many genres of music, nothing beats the quad DAC on LG's V-series. It was my favorite thing about the V30 when I owned it, along with the great battery life I had, albeit as a lighter user. What I couldn't handle about the phone was the bad reception on T-Mobile here in NYC, as well as LG's pittance of a theme engine.
    With other OEM's seemingly (finally) making 4000 mAh batteries standard, there's no excuse for LG to remain stagnant in that area. No one ever complains about having larger batteries. If LG had even half of Samsung's theming options and a larger battery with improved reception, there's no question what my choice would be. As it stands now, however, I'm leaning towards Samsung again, which hurts, considering my love for the quad DAC.

    I honestly don't think anybody is going to miss the design portion of the review. I think we've ooohed our last ahhhh over that stuff. It would be nice if we came back to it when/if a company actually improves the usability of the product through design instead of just wowing us with where tech is. Apples' Face ID is wondrous tech to be sure, but it I just don't see why it's better than a fingerprint when its 'superior security' is debatable.

    Thank you Juan you just help me decide because I want to bring a top-notch LG device back onto the channel for production purposes so I was kind of torn between the v30 and the v40 and I think I'll go with the v30 because it still implements some of the features that I liked you like the seamless switching from your primary sensor to your wide angle sensor and as you said it keeps some of the hardware and software capabilities of C type c port mainly in display output and I get to save a lot of money by going with last year's option so I'm I'm happy keep up the great work love all your content especially your camera reviews some my favorite content that you produced I'll catch you on the next one have a good one.

I had to modify my V20 and V30's thermal.conf file just so I could game without hitching and charge at full speed while using the phone. As far as XDA mod support for the v40, it remains to be seen.

    Shout out for the G Flex 2 at the end! I'm an old school LG fan who's been underwhelmed by LG of late. In fact, I still miss the buttons on the back! And I also think that LG really missed out on an opportunity to make the curved phone (G Flex) a hit. Just like curved TVs and monitors, I believe that the G Flex line could have been successful if LG had only handled it all better and not given up too soon. The battery and throttling issues on the G Flex 2 with the Snapdragon 810 really hamstrung it. But imagine a larger OLED phone with that curved display including LG's audio prowess and buttons on the back. I'm telling you, it would have been stellar at media consumption and a truly successful phone line/differentiator! Personally, I still prefer the curved display of the G Flex to the curved edges on Samsung phones, which still seem like a gimmick to me, (with limited utility that cause glare and touch issues). I have an LG Stylo 4 right now. I'm a stylus fan and didn't want to pay $1000 (or more) for my phone. Obviously, the Stylo 4 is a budget phone, but for what it is, it's great! I especially love having a built-in stylus.

  • @WuigiBearX
    @WuigiBearX 5 років тому

    I've rocked almost every LG phone since the G2, and every V series phone so far. The V30 was a fantastic phone, but my only complaint was that the auto brightness at 0% would make the screen impossible to see. I had to manually adjust the brightness at night so I could see anything. With the V40 I don't have that problem anymore. What's interesting though is the auto brightness stops at 15% on the V40, so if the V30 only dimmed to 15%, it probably wouldn't have been an issue. The 5 cameras are cool (sort of gimmicky), but the telephoto lens doesn't serve a purpose for me. I've used the telephoto camera maybe once (with bad results). I have used the widescreen camera a ton since the V20 introduced it, so glad to still have that and see it get improved every generation. Battery life is fantastic for my use. In the few months since I got the V40, I don't remember ever having to charge mid-day. As an example, I've been using my V40 all morning on and off (between 8AM and 11AM) and I'm still at 90% battery. That's with 1 hour of screen usage and 2 hours of total usage. I usually make it a full day with about 30-40% left, which is the best I've seen on a phone yet from the LG series.

    There's a lot to like in regards to the V40 but it's discouraging to hear once again how you can get real good pictures with their manual mode (I have a G6 so I'm very familiar with it). The reality is that the vast majority of people shopping for a cell phone are looking for something they can just use as a point and shoot camera and not have to start trying to see what the ISO and so on should be set to for best results. I'm not looking to single out LG on this as every manufacturer's auto mode camera has its faults (Samsung and their ongoing white balance issues) but it seems that when it comes to their software LG does less with more when it comes to the hardware they are putting on their phones.

    I'd still keep design but downgrade it to a quick mention, unless a manufacturer does something pretty unique with a particular phone. Frankly, I'd love to see more gradient colors and textured glass in phones like what Huawei's been doing lately to push case makers into making more and better clear cases as you'd have the best of both worlds: protection from drop while still being able to look at the $700+ glass pebble you just dropped cash for. But that's just me as I DO kinda take design into account as well: you're gonna be buying an expensive item that you're gonna be stuck looking at for a while. Might as well like how it looks.
    As for LG, eh I'm still very cautious when it comes to them. Sure, they make phones with orgasmic audio hardware and having full manual video controls is a treat, specially when playing with Moment lenses and pairing the phone with a Zhiyun Crane (the Smooth phone gimbal line doesn't handle weight as well as I hoped) but their phones still have a few quirks thanks to the software and I'm still not too impressed with auto for both video and images, specially if I just want something real quick to snap that I can throw a few filters onto and post.
    Either way, I'll still be looking at LG in the future when it's time to upgrade.
