They had the confidence, charisma and stage presence of seasoned vets but when the Immortal Songs Medley was filmed Mamamoo had only done 4 or 5 concerts up til then and only had one #1 hit single at that point. Mamamoo was assembled by well-known songwriter Kim Dohoon, the co-CEO of a startup label called Rainbowbridge World (RBW). MMM was the first group to debut under RBW. We look at them now and see superstars but debuting under a tiny new agency with few resources and little clout in the industry meant that they started from zero and promoted themselves by performing on the streets. The members had been rejected all over town as non-idol material before Kim Dohoon selected them based on their talent. For example Solar had failed about 50 auditions because she was thought to be too old and Hwasa was bluntly told she was fat and ugly. At an industry showcase prior to their debut everyone told Kim Dohoon that MMM would fail miserably. They're all short and aren't girlishly pretty and skinny and they didn't fit into typical kpop girl group concepts such as cute, innocent, sexy or badass girl crush. Besides not fitting into the typical idol image there are many other ways that MMM is unlike most other girl groups. They're creative artists, not just performers - they all write songs and play instruments and up until 2019 they did their own choreography. They've always done much of their own styling and collaborate on the vocal arrangements and MV concepts. They ignore kpop and Korean norms regarding beauty, fashion, gender and sexuality and are outspoken advocates for female empowerment, lgbtq+ support, and have been leaders in accessibility to hearing impaired fans via a vibrating lightstick and the inclusion of sign language in their choreo and at fanmeets. As you might imagine, the many ways they push the idol envelope makes them one of kpop's biggest shit magnets. In response MMM has been fighting internet bullying while simultaneously promoting a message of self-love and acceptance for everyone's uniqueness. There are a lot of resources if you'd like to learn more about the members and MMM's history. Purple Hawke's two-part member guide called Introducing Mamamoo is the best and most up to date. What Girl's vids about MMM such as The Ultimate MMM Introduction Guide, Mamamoo Has It All (Get to Know MMM), and Mamamoo's Story are all worth watching. What Girl also made an excellent comparison vid called Mamamoo Studio Vs Live that shows they're even better live than on record.
@@SapiaNt0mata Of course they're slim, tho they don't look anorexic like some female idols. The point was that Solar didn't fail 40+ auditions and Moonbyul get released by another agency due to lack of skills. Each member didn't fit the female idol mold in one way or another but unlike other agencies RBW prioritized their talent. Solar: "When we were trainees our agency said that we realistically weren't tall and lean like models or looked cool in that way. We weren't exceptionally pretty either." Soompi interviewed RBW co-CEO Kim Dohoon about MMM's formation: "Mamamoo had been planned from the start to be presented as "artists" more so than other idol groups."
Hwasa and Wheein are best friends since middle school, they went to Seoul together and did many auditions together, Wheein was going to debute in another company along side Moon Byul, but than they both droped the company, Wheein and Hwasa got in RBW company, and then Moon Byul did too (they did not talked about it, but their fate was together), Solar was studying to become a flight attendant, and than someone said she had a great voice and told her to try being a idol, but she was already 22 years old (too "old" to start her training) she went to more than 40 auditions and didn't make it cause of her age, her parents told her that she had only one more chance to try passing a audition or she would give up and keep her studies, the last audition was in RBW, where she got in, was her last chance... For me they were made to be together, they even made a song called Destiny where they say that even if they went in different paths they would find each other They were meant to each other, these 4 are just different, they are unique, they are mamamoo
I had a really hard time getting into girl groups which was disappointing. It's not that they weren't talented or anything--it's just a lot of what girl groups do feels like pageantry. It's not really about the music or stage--that's just the medium through which they present themselves aesthetically. And I actually really love pageantry (not just in pageants, but in general) so I appreciate the skill it takes. But Mamamoo was like a breath of fresh air. They feel real and relatable and artistic. And like you said, it's each of them. They're all so charismatic and talented. Idk if you know this but Moonbyul writes all her raps (she's the most credited 3rd gen female in kpop)! They all contribute to the art. And they're known for their stage presence. They were on a competition called Queendom and the group that had to cover them were a seasoned group and they were worried that they coudn't replicate the way Mamamoo engages with the fans. Anyway, I'm not even a MooMoo (that's the name of Mamamoo's fandom). I'm an ARMY (BTS fan). But I respect Mamamoo so much and really love their work. Wheein is my bias but Mamamoo is a group you could just make me pick my bias out of a hat and I'd be like "YES LOVE HER." I hope you'll keep reacting to them!
That's been a big thing i disliked about girl groups in general, too. And it sucks because you just know all those women want to do and be more than just that but they've been constrained by an industry that has always just focused on women being pretty and doing what they're told, and the agencies just continue it, the female artists rarely having any input in what they're singing or performing. It's all 'here's thr song you are going to sing. Sing it exactly like this even if we made the pitch uncomfortable for you', 'here's the choreo. Do it just like this' and so on Thankfully, that has been changing slowly, in part thanks to mamamoo, and more and more idols are getting at least some say in their performances or styling, but it's especially noticable when they're also actually involved in the music. Even if a song isn't to my taste, just knowing the artist actually created it, or at least some aspect of it, makes it more enjoyable to me than if they were just the medium it was being conveyed through It's about time the kpop industry and south korea realized that women can be every bit as creative as men...though that's still a struggle everywhere, sadly
Mamamoo,... these 4 ladies used to show up outside of huge music events and perform in front of the theater. There is footage of them doing it. If you want to see people in line to get in suddenly moving out of line over to a street performance quickly,... watch these ladies WOW the crowd OUT IN THE STREET!!!! TOTAL BOSSES!!!
wish RBW would be better at promoting them internationally..after 7 years theres no reason they arent as popular as top 3 globally. Even though RBW has my respect for giving them creative autonomy... think if they had the resources of big three they would be at BP or BTS level
they would be better, if they had more money, power, and influence. even in Korea their live shows don't surpass 10,000 audience, and most of the time it's less than 10,000. they can't get big venues in Korea and you think they can do lives internationally? but they did some live shows in the West. they made 2 shows in USA = Los Angeles and New York, and 1 in Brazil. some were lucky and saw them live.
Now y’all need to react to the introduction guide by purple hawke 1&2 it’s 2 members per part It’s crazy cause these weren’t even their songs they were all covers of legendary korean songs that they did on a show called immortal songs & they were so good they performed them at their concert aka this video
The only thing that I hate about MAMAMOO is they’re set the bar so high among girl groups out there lmao. And I’m so excited with their junior girl group called Purple Kiss because they’re going to debut soon. Checkout their pre-debut singles which are MY HEART SKIP A BEAT & CAN WE TALK AGAIN. Love you guys!!!
Agreed. I sometimes see people asking who else is like Mamamoo that they should listen to, and there just isn't anyone. Listening to other girl groups sing live often makes me cringe. And then who else would show up to an awards show dressed as the Teletubbies? No one else would, EVER. Mamamoo is unique, squared.
Exid has potential but their company is sh*t and junghwa need more vocal coach because her voice is unique she should know how to use it in "better" way
MAMAMOO ARE the stage, the stage is not them. They OWN the stages they do. It's definitely something that's rare in KPOP amongst female idols hence why they've broke so many prejudice in the music industry in South Korea, completely shifting the stereotype that idols are only famous for visuals and dance moves nothing to do with musicality and artistry. These 4 girls are talented beyond KPOP. Moonbyul holds the highest writing credits in the 3rd generation, as well as the other members each have credits under their belt too. They succeeded because of their music.
As mentioned in another comment, Wheein and Hwasa are childhood friends that came to Seoul together to fulfilled their dreams of becoming singers. Wheein was in another company with Moonbyul, which didn’t work out for the both of them. Wheein and Hwasa then ended up at RBW’s developmental “incubating” system. In an interview, RBW’s CEO talked about how before MAMAMOO was formed, his goal was to produce artists that would be talented at singing and good at having fun on stage. He saw Wheein and Hwasa and thought it would be cool to have a group formed with them two in it. RBW originally had nine trainees and the number was cut down through evaluations. Moonbyul then Solar made up the remaining four members. MAMAMOO was originally supposed to be a five member group, but one member dropped out before their debut.
@@doriannepontez9757 Her name is Choi Soo Jung and she was the eldest member of the group. She probably could have been MAMAMOO’s leader if she stayed. They’ve mentioned her in many interviews and she’s still really close with the members. In fact, she appeared with Hwasa in an episode of I Live Alone where they went on a picnic. There’s another YT video where she also visits them on set and you can tell they are still really close.
oh yeah, soojung was indeed going to be the leader, which is one reason solar was having so many issues as the leader early on, the position was thrust upon her unexpectedly. and soojung really is still close with the members, particularly solar and hwasa. she and hwasa even share a tattoo, the same way hwasa shares two tattoos with wheein. i believe on top of what keli mentioned, they've got pictures of her at some of their concerts with them (also, if the yt video about the visit is the one i'm thinking of, it's actually mamamoo visiting soojung for her... podcast or whatever it was. i honestly forget what she wound up doing for a living but do remember it sometimes involves interviewing people). she supposedly quit being a trainee to focus on the relationship with her then-time boyfriend, who she has since married (and i believe mmm attended the wedding but am not sure). said husband is a well-known cartoonist and has referenced mamamoo at least a few times in his comics
love your reactions, they have the same viber , i believe coz they have been fighting together from promoting their music on the street a the beginning to the top. they are actually a family. That's the fact that people from the industry look down on them even before their debut. i think someone has recommend Introducing Mamamoo part 1 & 2 by purple Hawke , in which you can know some of the individual personality , however i also recommend mamamoo's journey, knowing how they fight as a group for their dreams
Love your reaction 🥺 Since you already talked about their versatility, uniqueness. If you don't know, they've released their solo songs. If you have time, you can check out their solos Moonbyul : Eclipse, selfish (ft. Seulgi from Red velvet) , absence, love and hate,in my room, snow (any of these) Solar : spit it out, nada sou sou Wheein : easy, 25, goodbye Hwasa : maria, twit, lmm, be calm, nobody else
Thanks for reacting to the medley!! Honestly watching them is so comforting to me. As to how Mamamoo were created (going off distant memory): Hwasa (ahn Hyejin) and Wheein (Jung Wheein) met in middle school. I wanna say it was love at first sight for Hwasa lmao. Anyway the two used to skip school to go to karaoke and also had the same dream of being singers. I know that Hwasa made money by doing song guides as well (during or after high school, I forgot lol). I wanna say they were golden children... just not with school work 😂 Moonbyul (Moon Byulyi) was accepted into an SM Academy training program. She was originally a vocalist, but ultimately failed her evaluation into SME. This was definitely the birthplace of a lot of her insecurities, including her vocal prowess, so SME can go step on a pile of lego. Coincidentally, she almost debuted in a girl group with Wheein (as the leader), but was cut because of her weight 🙃 Solar (Kim Yongsun) was scouted when she sang at what I think was one of those outdoor karaoke stages? She went to the audition, but didn't get in. She went on to audition at 39 other different companies but was denied at every turn. One of the main reasons being: she was 'too old'. Yong was over 20 at the time, so you can just imagine what those grown ass men were telling her. Her parents also really discouraged her from committing to this, since she was originally going to become a flight attendant and was 'throwing her future away' (not maliciously, I think they were just worried). Whee and Hyej auditioned for RBW together (wasn't Rainbow Bridge World then, but I'll just keep things simple. They eventually merged). Their CEO at the time envisioned a group of artists made by artists, going off Wheesa's talent. They were the standard. Whee knew Byul, and she was also accepted into the company after an audition. By then, Yong had been given an ultimatum by her parents. If she failed this one last audition, she had to give up her dreams as an idol and continue being a flight attendant. She agreed, but RBW wanted artistry over age and she was also accepted into the company uwu Fun fact: Mamamoo was supposed to debut as five members. This made Solar, the maknae of her family, the Leader of Mamamoo. She herself faced a lot of struggles because of this. At the beginning, Byul and Yong actually did not get along. They fought a LOT haha (physically, I mean). This was mostly due to a lot of power imbalance and differing perspectives. Byul is the oldest daughter in her family, while Yong is the youngest. Byul also thought Yong was younger than her in the beginning and spoke to her informally, which started this whole cold war. Despite this misunderstanding, the two found their rhythm and became extremely close and their closeness persists to this day. They also faced so many hardships before and during debut. Being from a small company with no money (when people say Mamamoo made RBW, they mean it), they struggled with promotion and respect. Tbh it was a witch hunt as soon as they debuted. Many other people from different companies told the CEO that they would fail, despite their talents, because they were 'ugly' 🙃 no doubt they were belittled and faced a lot of bullying from the industry (BECAUSE THE INDUSTRY SURE DO BULLY THEM TO THIS DAY). Hyejin in particular faced this because of her confident demeanour and the fact that she didn't conform to Korean Beauty standards (well we love mookarma in this house, because now she's resetting their entire culture). Also Wheein Ace of kpop, I don't make the rules. ANYWAY, I did not expect to write this essay. I had more to say but I really need to stop. I'm so sorry. I hope you learned something despite my rambling 😂
Love ur reactions! Would be amazing f u react to delilah of immortal songs as well. It is live and they r flawless.! And also there introduction guide by purple hawke, good help of knowing them.
These were all old classic Korean hits btw, so none of these songs (or the choreo/concept) are theirs. They definitely killed it and made it their own tho, love this performance

i really appreciate it when reactors include vocal analysis of these queens. loved ur reaction! pls check out purple hawke's MAMAMOO INTRODUCTION parts 1 and 2 ^^
Btw this one is a medley right...but the individual song itself was even better! Try to watch it on your own time and let us know eventually which one is your favourite(s)...hehe But don't react to it since it's from KBS, you might get a copyright strike.
Wheein and Hwasa were friends since Middle School, they were the first in the group then Moonbyul came from another company and was put into the group. Solar was the last to join and was automatically placed as leader because she is the eldest. But like you guys guessed Wheein and Hwasa was already close, but Solar and Moonbyul didn't like each other initially. They even fought a few times(fists).
That's music right there. True artist and we are lucky enough to be in this fandom before there time is up. I feel sad for those who will go on never knowing them.
Mamamoo shines the best in their live performances you can see not only their great vocals. but personalities as well. Sidenote their concerts are 4 hours long with only them no opening acts.
In re: how they were formed, they were trainees for Rainbow Bridge World together. Their CEO, agency co-founder, and principle songwriter Kim Do Hoon said he was looking for girls who were good enough vocally to debut as solo artists, but he chose the members of Mamamoo specifically because they had fun while rehearsing and performing. There was actually a fifth member of the group who quit just before they debuted. I often wonder if she regrets it now. So they were chosen based on their vocals and their crackhead energy. 😏
I believe that she quit to focus on her relationship with the man she wound up marrying, so think she's happy with her life...though i do expect her to have 'what if...' moments because it'd be hard not to. She's still friends with the members, esp solar and hwasa
This was a gorgeous and fun reaction! I loved your commentary, your excitement and genuine joy to everything was like candy to the brain. Thank you for the fun video and I look forward to more of your excellent reactions! Blessed be
Hello got to say love your reactions these women are muli-talented just so glad when others see that as well. Please watch other videos these women can do I promise you'll be glad you did.
Omg I am so happy you reacted to this. Unexpected. Enjoyed your insights and appreciate it the time you put into the video. Mamamoo is amazing. My gf is hooked too now after telling her she'd appreciate the musicality they bring. One of the few kpop girl groups that are so involved in the music they create/produce. I would love for Mamamoo to work with ChloexHalle cause those girls can sing and harmonize like no other. ChloexHalle are such amazing artists and for them to do something together would be a dream. Hwasa's worked with Dua Lipa.
✔ Immortal Songs - TV Show on KBS2 in South Korea - Singing Competition of Singers/Celebrities - New Arrangements for Old Famous Songs Decades Ago ✔ The Video that You Guys Watched - MAMAMOO's Performance in Their Concert with the Songs that They've Sung When They've Appeared on 'Immortal Songs' Several Times So Far so you guys should change that title. not "Immortal Medley" but "Immortal Songs Medley". anyway I enjoyed your lovely reaction, thx :)
I would love for you guys to react to Moonbyul's songs, so you can hear her singing voice. Moonbyul is actually my favorite singer in Mamamoo, which is saying something considering how amazing Solar, Wheein, and Hwasa are. I would suggest "Snow," "In My Room," and especially her cover of "Don't Forget."
what more amazing on Moonbyul. those old songs have no rap in it. So all of it, she wrote it herself. She said, it causes her stress during the Immortal Songs contest . ahahaha
If you want to know more about each one of the members.. Please react to introducing Mamamoo by Purple Hawke! You will love them more.. And More Mamamoo Please ❤️❤️❤️
I always look forward to your mamamoo reactions 😊 I suggest taller than you (with eng sub) and waggy stage mix haha. Intro by purple hawke is nice too if you want to get to know the girls 👌
Girls please react to Introducing MAMAMOO part 1 & 2 by Pruple Hawk. I need to know what you girls think. Your reaction to the Inmortal Songs Medley gives me life. I love it. Thanks for everything girls, keep slaying!

Try the Short and fast version on introduction then a linger version. ua-cam.com/video/y0FCeqcAyuM/v-deo.html Then try the longer intro by Sondery and Purple Hwake i recommend these two they are the best intro of Mamamoo
mamamoo make it look SO effortless you forget how difficult it is to pull off a show this good, mamamoo are literally superior

That's the fact that people from the industry look down on them even before their debut.
i think someone has recommend Introducing Mamamoo part 1 & 2 by purple Hawke , in which you can know some of the individual personality , however i also recommend mamamoo's journey, knowing how they fight as a group for their dreams
Love your reaction 🥺
Since you already talked about their versatility, uniqueness. If you don't know, they've released their solo songs. If you have time, you can check out their solos
Moonbyul : Eclipse, selfish (ft. Seulgi from Red velvet) , absence, love and hate,in my room, snow (any of these)
Solar : spit it out, nada sou sou
Wheein : easy, 25, goodbye
Hwasa : maria, twit, lmm, be calm, nobody else
Thanks for reacting to the medley!! Honestly watching them is so comforting to me.
As to how Mamamoo were created (going off distant memory):
Hwasa (ahn Hyejin) and Wheein (Jung Wheein) met in middle school. I wanna say it was love at first sight for Hwasa lmao. Anyway the two used to skip school to go to karaoke and also had the same dream of being singers. I know that Hwasa made money by doing song guides as well (during or after high school, I forgot lol). I wanna say they were golden children... just not with school work
😂
Moonbyul (Moon Byulyi) was accepted into an SM Academy training program. She was originally a vocalist, but ultimately failed her evaluation into SME. This was definitely the birthplace of a lot of her insecurities, including her vocal prowess, so SME can go step on a pile of lego. Coincidentally, she almost debuted in a girl group with Wheein (as the leader), but was cut because of her weight 🙃
Solar (Kim Yongsun) was scouted when she sang at what I think was one of those outdoor karaoke stages?
She agreed, but RBW wanted artistry over age and she was also accepted into the company uwu
Fun fact: Mamamoo was supposed to debut as five members.
Wowwww
Thank you

Actually thank you because every time I see your reaction I become happy for no reason you just so lovely to watch🤣🤣🤣❤️

OMG YOU NEED TO SEE THEIR RECENT POKEMON COVER
I thought it was a comeback
Btw this one is a medley right...but the individual song itself was even better! Try to watch it on your own time and let us know eventually which one is your favourite(s)...hehe
But don't react to it since it's from KBS, you might get a copyright strike.
They even fought a few times(fists).
thank you for reacting to our girls . your reactions are really good
So you know, I'm doing a marathon of your reactions to Mamamoo.
That's music right there. True artist and we are lucky enough to be in this fandom before there time is up. I feel sad for those who will go on never knowing them.
Mamamoo set the standard, if you stan them it means you have immaculate taste. Not everyone have it☺️
Mamamoo shines the best in their live performances you can see not only their great vocals. but personalities as well. Sidenote their concerts are 4 hours long with only them no opening acts.
I love how they are discovering how amazing mamamoo is 😍
INTRODUCING MAMAMOO part 1 & 2 by Purple Hawk is the best way to know the girls!
Love your reactions
She's still friends with the members, esp solar and hwasa
i'm just here watching all reaction videos of mamamoo

you guys should really react to introducing mamamoo by purple hawke!! it’s such a good intricate and detailed guide
✔ Immortal Songs
- TV Show on KBS2 in South Korea
- Singing Competition of Singers/Celebrities
- New Arrangements for Old Famous Songs Decades Ago
✔ The Video that You Guys Watched
- MAMAMOO's Performance in Their Concert with the Songs that They've Sung When They've Appeared on 'Immortal Songs' Several Times So Far
so you guys should change that title. not "Immortal Medley" but "Immortal Songs Medley".
anyway I enjoyed your lovely reaction, thx :)
I would love for you guys to react to Moonbyul's songs, so you can hear her singing voice. Moonbyul is actually my favorite singer in Mamamoo, which is saying something considering how amazing Solar, Wheein, and Hwasa are. I would suggest "Snow," "In My Room," and especially her cover of "Don't Forget."
they are real entertainers
mamamoo heeyaayy 💜🔥
Please react to Solar's solo performance singing "Speechless". And also their Queendom 1 performances.Your going to love it, no doubt💕
what more amazing on Moonbyul. those old songs have no rap in it. So all of it, she wrote it herself. She said, it causes her stress during the Immortal Songs contest . ahahaha
