Moonbyul is the rapper of Mamamoo, which is an extremely talented group well respected in Korea and commonly known as the vocal queens of kpop, you could already see that even the rapper sings beautifully. Mamamoo is a group that has openly supported the LGBT+ community since its beginnings in 2014, which to this day has cost it criticism in Korea for how closed they are. There are many more examples of that support both in the group and in their solo careers, one of the most recent is the song Colors by Solar, another of the members. Moonbyul is the most credited female idol in kpop history with 120 songs under her name so far and of course she wrote this song. She has never said anything about her sexuality but the entire mamamoo fandom and every kpop fan in general is completely sure that she is not heterosexual, and although she has never said anything she is very free when it comes to acting and giving her opinion on this topic, for example she has said that instead of boyfriend she prefers the term couple, in addition to the fact that every year she used to write a letter for fans on visibility day. She is also a magnet for women, they all fall for her charms, both fans and idols, and she spends her time flirting with every woman she now🤣
Fun fact: Moonbyul has talked a lot about this song, and went in depth on the themes of the lyrics and music video. There's a video of her discussing it in her radio show Studio Moon Night (I could link it to you, if you'd like). She also participated in the lyrics and specifically wrote hthe second verse (starting at the row a boat); she's the most credited female idol and currently seats at 120 KOMCA credits. (On a side note, her live performances of it are quite... interesting... girly likes to paint a picture, I'll leave it at that). As someone mentioned before, this song is part of a project called "6quence" in which every song details a part of a relationship (that just so happens to be sapphic) - with the intro being a recolection after the end and then from the first track: first meeting someone to then falling in love, then having turbulent emotions, breaking up and at end reflecting about what went on and how to move on from there. I may be extremely biased, Moonbyul is my favorite Idol (and Mamamoo is my favorite kpop artist), but I genuinely think this project is incredibly well done. All the songs have music videos or video performances, and they truly read as the chapters of a movie. I'd really recommend checking it in full, and in order. I actually would love to recommend more Moonbyul for you, if you's like to check out Eclipse (a much more hard hitting song) and Absence (beautiful, sad times anthem). Or GGBB and (and maybe especially) Chico Malo which are part of her work with Solar, another member of Mamamoo. As for Mamamoo... I'd really recommend starting with Hip, their most popular song and then moving on to other title tracks - I personally love Yes I Am, Pianoman, Egotistic, Windflower and Illella. Thank you so much for checking out this song, I love it so much and honestly wish it got a lot more attention than it does
Love that you got the "correct" (maybe more intended? is the better expression) meaning of the Music video right away! This album, 6equence, actually tells a whole sapphic love story. There is a song before this (G999) that describes the more energetic and exciting feeling of the beginning stages of a relationship and Shutdown is the stage after that. Moonbyul even released short scripts (in line with the movie theme) for each song and a line there says something along the lines of "I've been thinking about you the whole day, like I can feel you from head to toe" so the MV does reflect hat stage wherein you're so in love that they're on your mind 24/7 even while doing the most trivial mundane things
Loved your reaction! Moonbyul (the blonde) is probably my favorite female idol. She's the rapper in Mamamoo, and though she has never officially come out (it's really risky in Korea to do so), most fans I know strongly suspect she is a lesbian based on much circumstantial evidence with this song being one of the big ones. For some more queer rep in K-pop take a look at these: This is a playlist I made of some songs/MVs that I think are either obviously or subtly lesbian coded: ua-cam.com/play/PLg2Yv13O_sGSBpckhUe_7M-2sqPvh2HJx.html And another playlist that is the same but for the boys: ua-cam.com/video/IVzGsh0zRec/v-deo.html
Moonbyul expected this song to get a 19 rating, but she seemed to get away with it completely by using metaphors. I would say that most LGBTQ+ representation in k-pop is in the MVs rather than explicitly in the lyrics - this song and "Oh my God" are pretty rare. Seori's song "lovers in the night" has great representation, and Solar's song "Colors" does also. Brown Eyed Girls have "Wonder Woman" and "Abracadabra" have representation in the MVs, though quite a few of their MVs are queer-coded imo. G-idle have done a cover of "Abracadabara" actually 😁 Mamamoo as a group have so many great songs. "Hip" is probably their most popular song and was a response to a lot of hate comments they'd received. Honestly, they have released so many songs, it's hard to know where to begin. Solar and Moonbyul also created a subunit called Mamamoo+ and have a few great songs. My wife would probably kill me if i don't mention Stray Kids "Red lights" is definitely gay coded 😅 Happy pride 🌈🌈🌈🌈
Mamamoo are the mothers of K-Pop alphabet mafia!!! I would recommend checking out their Killing Voice to hear our vocal queens! I recommend Introducing Mamamoo by Purplehawke (Moofin) to get to know them. And I recommend Why is Mamamoo underrated to get to know why we stan these amazing people!!!
This mv potrays the feeling of being smitten by the person you love. Even when she is not there with her, she feel her presence in the space they share all the time. In the end, where Moonbyul look at Seori it’s where she is presence at the time. The other song from the same EP of Moonbyul featuring Mirani titled G999 also has the same theme if you really look into the lyrics but with different vibe.
Goodbye by Wheein (also a Mamamoo member) is a breakup between two women and Solar (the leader of Mamamoo) has just released colors which is very lgbt. Mamamoos song Hip and Gogobebe has lgbt representation in the MVs. The killing voice is a good place to start for their vocals.
Moonbyul is the main rapper of Mamamoo. Shes the blond one in this song, wrote and produced it. I believe Seori is a solo artist. I believe yall watched HIP by Mamamoo, moonbyul was the one with the light purple hair in that video.
What I love about this song that despite it’s definitly spicy, It’s not just pure spice like most of mainstream music nowaday. It feel passionate, cozy, intimate and poetic. This is my comfort song and I’m grateful that Moonbyul - the blonde in the video wrote it. Definitely check out Mamamoo. Mamamoo is the group of women (they famous for their extraodinary vocal and the fact that their fandom is 98% female)
For Mamamoo as a whole, the best starting place is their Killing Voice video, where they sing live a snippet out of many of their most famous songs then check the MV's of your favorites out of that. After that their Immortal Songs medley is their ultimate vocal flex and then you will probably want to watch a guide. There are 3 good choices. The Purple Hawk from 2020 has the most about the individual members. The Moo_YT from 2022 has more recent info and is better for the group as a whole. The one titled Why Mamamoo is the most Underrated Group is best for their impact on the Kpop industry. Some other specifically LGBTQ+ content would be Wheein's video Goodbye (a female art student with a crush on her female teacher breaks into her house and fantasizes about being a couple with her). Um, Oh, Ah Yeah where three of the group members are in drag and Solar falls for Moonbyul without realizing she's a girl (especially embraced by the Korean LGBTQ+ community. Words Don't Come Easy where they seriously flirt with each other and a lucky female audience member. Solar has just had a solo comeback. Her music video for Colors (which she wrote and composed) is pure vogue. Her backup dancers are from a vogueing house ... House of Love and their house leader did the choreo. Very much a club song. Mamamoo has always been a strong ally from the beginning in 2014. In a 2016 awards show they used a gender fluid dance group in their performance. Moonbyul has written letters of support for years during Pride. Wheein in an interview stated "All love is the same love". They have an LGBTQ+ fan group that raises money for Korean pride celbrations with their blessing. They used drag queens in their MV for Hip. Solar had a drag queen do her up as Hedwig for Halloween on her youtube channel solarsido.
The biggest difference between this and 'oh my god' is that this is completely and utterly meant as a sapphic love song where as 'oh my god' has 1, count them, 1 reference that being the repeated use of 'she'. And the 'she' is explained by the writer not just to mean a female. In short, they were dodging and trying to have their cake and eat it too because being gay in Korea is still a big taboo. By the by, except for a very brief touch by one member of another members jaw there is NO interaction between them. Again, read the lyrics and replace 'she' by 'he' and then try to tell me it's about sapphic love. Of for that matter, let a boy group sing it without changing a single piece of lyric. Where as this song, the camera work, the flow of the song, the back and forth between the two singers, the way they look at each other, the lines each of them sing, AND Moonbyul not trying to keep up a front of plausible denial unlike Soyeon herself saying that the story is up to everyone's personal interpretation. Of can you imagine two males singing this exact song without changing the lyrics and it still make sense? This song isn't hinting at or trying to be coy about it. The members of Mamamoo don't hide their support for LGBTQ. Check out : Colors MV by Solar or Good bye MV by Wheein Not to mention the times that the group used queer dancers not only in video clips but even live performances. So if you are going to hail G-idle as being pro-LGTBQ because of the use of a female pronoun in 1 lyric what do you proclaim Mamamoo to be actual showing in your face support and respect for the community up to and including in interviews.
Ok here are some more queer kpop recs!!!! LibidO, skins, and the be series (a multi part series of solo songs by the members that portray different aspects of different mlm relationship. Make sure to read the description for each song) by OnlyOneOf (they have dedicated themselves to a queer storyline/theme and even have a whole bl drama) Heart attack by Chuu Please don’t by K Will (one of the first portrayals of a gay person in a kpop mv) If anyone else has some other recs or if I’ve gotten anything wrong please let me know!
Loved watching your reactions and hearing your interpretations on the MV! You actually got that part right where Moonbyul's so down bad for her lover that everything she does just reminds Byul of her. A lot of people thought Seori was a ghost lol. Mamamoo is not your typical kpop girl group. They are widely recognized as the vocal queens of kpop, as well as being the biggest crackheads/goofballs in the business. They have always been a strong supporter of the LGBT+ community which is quite brave seeing that South Korea has a very conservative posture in this area. To get a better understand to the group even before you get into their amazing music I suggest reacting to the recent video essay WHY MAMAMOO IS THE MOST UNDERRATED KPOP GROUP, which emphasizes their commitment to the LGBT+ community. Looking forward to many more of your reactions, especially to Mamamoo ❤❤🦋❤
you should react to her song eclipse and the music video. she had an androgynous look in the music video and more masculine intense choreography. it’s rare to see korean celebrities play with gender presentation like that
This is Moonbyul of the group Mamamoo, which is a group of not just singers but known to be at the top with the best of the best live vocalists in the world, Moonbyul is the main rapper of the group though really all of 4 members can rap and sing very very well. There are live performances of this with Moonbyul and Solar(one of the other members of mamamoo) which if you were moomoos you would l love it. All 4 members(Hwasa and Wheein are the other two) have multiple very good solo albums as well which is where this song comes from, 6equence is the name of the album. They all have active youtube channels as well. You will want to react to the group's songs. Many start with the medleys killing voice, immortal songs2 and a newer medley Mamamoo Live Hits Collection which was a live performance on the Hwasa TV Show(yeah they do TV shows, radio shows, Solar was the lead in the musical Mata Hari and now Esmerelda in Notre Dame de Paris. I saw mamamoo live in Los Angeles last year, they really are the best live vocals. Mamamoo is also known for open support and inclusion of LGBTQ and it is reflected in their songs, Korea is not very tolerant as a culture and these women have been battling negativity from the start when they were told they are too ugly compared to model perfect kpop idols, so they must be the best vocalists ever if they are to succeed. Today they are trend setters. But for a really good video for inclusion, check out Solar's new album Colours(her vocals are insane especially the last song Blues) but the song Colors(yes spelled differently) is completely in your face LGBTQ in the MV, filmed at and with Dancers for the House of Love. You may want to start with this song then get into the rest of mamamoo. They have over 400 videos and with OSTs, covers included they do about 25 songs every year. Seori is a well known singer and song writer. Collabs are common in Kpop.
Thank you for reacting to Moonbyul! Would recommend Colors performance by Solar, she’s another member of mamamoo and made a queer ballroom inspired video with dancers from the House of Love! Hope you guys enjoy!
I'm wondering if the music video is more of a representation of sexuality and facing your truth? also Id check out Solar's new song as well cuz that's also an LGBT+ anthem!
