"I loved this music video, mostly because there's a cat in it." LOL . I kinda love your reactions man. Back story on this song: Sonic Youth are regarded as the seminal American alternative rock band. They're been going since the early 80s and are still going. This is one of their most accessible songs, but some of their shit is extremely experimental - pure noise. They had a huge impact in the 90s and convinced a lot of artists, like Nirvana and Beck, to sign to major labels. That really changed music at the time. This song is partially about an encounter that Kim Gordon (the girl) had with the rapper LL Kool J (thus the title). She thought he'd be really cool and want to talk about black politics and stuff, but he was actually just a sexist asshole who treated women like shit. It's kind of about the gap between her perception and the reality - the reality being that a lot of black artists with power just didn't care about helping the world, they were just as bad as everyone else. It's quite a topical and controversial song. That "random guy" is no random - that's Chuck D from Public Enemy! Sonic Youth were friends with Public Enemy because they were a very socially conscious hip hop group. If you haven't done any Public Enemy, you definitely should. But make sure it's the early stuff!
I highly recommend '100%' by Sonic Youth, another one of their more accessible songs. You should check out Pixies too - not exactly like Sonic Youth, but often get compared. Punkish, noisy, jagged, ahead of the curve. Both SY and Pixies influenced Radiohead heavily too, especially their earlier stuff. If you're after song recommendations for Pixies: 'Levitate Me', 'Monkey Gone To Heaven', 'Bone Machine', 'Where Is My Mind', 'Debaser', 'Dig For Fire' - all right up your street.
That "random guy doing ad-libs" is Chuck D from Public Enemy.
Must be great to be young and discover all this, imagine finding Sonic Youth and then getting Public Enemy to boot.....
