I recently repaired a similar model of this (owned by a shop). It had the same *_U81_* error and when I removed the top cover I found several ruptured capacitors on the power board. To save time, and reduce repair costs, I simply replaced the board with a good used working one pulled from an identical unit which had a faulty VCR and DVD drive. Once I reassembled the owner's unit and powered it up, after the normal "PLEASE WAIT" display it all worked perfectly; DVD and VCR. I then re-tuned all the DVB channels and set the clock. After some more tests, I returned the combo (now fixed) to the owners who were happy.
I've got the 48 model with the u81 error. For the sake of a few £ I'm gonna have a go myself. I'm going to take one out, put one in so I don't forget which goes where. Wish me luck and thanks for the upload.
Just got this exact model on freecycle with the same error code. Going to use this video as a guide! I’ve never changed capacitors before so fingers crossed! The deck came from a smoker’s house so it’s covered in tobacco stains 😢

good video as far as information regarding the error code U81. I would never bother doing the job twice though when once is more economical so just replace the caps at once since they are so cheap to buy anyway. I would also only use element 14 over RS components but have somewhere even better to go than both of them and have been going there for close to 40 yrs.

I repaired quite a few Panasonic VHS recorders through the first lockdown all with similar capacitor faults using used caps doing the same as you with an ESR meter to check if they were good or not. The quality of new caps these days is debateable especially if you go through Ebay so I tend to use suppliers such as RS components or CPC. The larger sizes of electrolytic caps can be expensive so it makes sense to recycle and of course you dont have to wait for delivery. Thanks again 5*
I just repaired my DMR-EZ47V by replacing some of the capacitors, but for some reason the sound doesn't work very well when playing from VHS tapes. I mean, you can sort of hear it, but it's quiet and fuzzy. If I play a DVD, the sound works perfectly. If I play the same VHS tape in another player, the sound works.
The capacitors I used to repair it I bought from Element14. I got Rubycon's with same capacitance values but higher voltage ratings than the originals.
Well done on getting it working. The sound from the VHS could be an alignment issue with the audio head or play head. The audio head is on the tape exit and there should be a black head and silver head. The silver one is the audio that has some adjustable screws on it. I wouldn't usually mess with these as you really need an oscilloscope to align them properly. If the picture is perfectly fine you could try and adjust the audio head very slightly to see if it improves the sound.

Do you have a full list of the capacitors that you replaced and possibly a source that sells all of them? I have this exact model that I need to replace the same capacitors.
Sorry for the late reply. I don't have I full list as this was a while ago now, I think I did find a list online somewhere. When I buy components I usually get the from RS Components website, a reputable UK company. There are also cheap options of capacitor packs on amazon that have various values and about 50 -100 in a pack.

Hi, you've not bought the kit from my eBay store because I don't sell them. If the tops of the caps aren't blown and you have a multimeter you could test one of the caps you've taken out and if it tests ok just try using one of the old ones.

I have one of these, but last week I had a rare VHS (that I was checking to see if it worked) get trapped inside - it tries to eject but seems to lift up too high and hits the VHS covering slot when it opens and then automatically re-inserts itself. Would extracting it simply involve taking the top off and taking the video out of the slot, or would it need more extensive work? Would doing it myself risk damaging the video? I would try and find someone with greater knowledge if so, as the video is very special. Thanks for any response you may have.
The best thing to do would be to take the top off and watch as the tape tries to eject. It could be getting stuck on the door and you may be able to guide it out. Otherwise hit the eject button and pull the power out just as it hits the top, this should release the tape from the mechanism and you could then pull the front of the machine off and guide the tape out carefully. Make sure you do not touch any electrical components with the top off and while it's plugged in, it could give you a fatal shock!

It's not in the manual unfortunately - I have no video just colours, although the audio does come through. I did have to substitute some values however, because I couldn't get the 120 and 680uF, so subbed 100 and 1000 respectively. Hi there - pls ignore the above! All seems to be working now, and the 1A is just the analog tv channel. The video wasn't working on HDMI, so I tried the composite outputs, which worked fine. Then I tried HDMI again, and all seems to be working. No idea why or how. Anyway, thanks again for you vid. Chris
I'm hoping you can help me. I have one of these players. When recording vhs to dvd I'm getting two audio playbacks. So an echo as they're slightly delayed. The recorded dvd is as it should be. But how do I get just the one audio playback while monitoring the recording process? Hope you don't mind me asking.
Update... Changed capacitors (9)and all booted up lovely.... But... My original problem is still there... Wasn't working through HDMI so I bought a second hand HDMI board. All I'm getting is 100s and 1000s type snow. Works through composite though. I've tried two hdmi leads and two TVs. It says "HDMI" in the video display .. Any ideas?
Is that a samsung D8000 TV 📺 you are using Seen it better on another video looks like its a Panasonic you have Got the Samsung one in the spare room but it has vertical lines on it now Really good tv but think its going now
The Amazon ones are usually cheap China copies and not very reliable. As I'm selling this I'd rather use a quality and reliable brand from RS Components, CPC or Mouser. The Amazon box is ok for testing though but I usually get ones from old electronic boards that aren't repairable or not worth repair.
Search for rs components, that is where I buy my caps from although you would probably have to buy a pack of 5 or 10 each. Otherwise you could probably buy a kit off of eBay.
I'm not sure if they are critical. See what happens by using a 150 I don't think it will hurt it as most caps have a 10-20% tolerance anyway. I am only a novice though so don't take anything I say as gospel.

I TUNED IT OFF LEFT IT FOR A WHILE IT THEN STARTED WORKING CORRECTLY FOR A DAY THEN STARTED THE SAME STUFF ALL OVER AGAIN ..NOW ALL I GET IS A BLANK SCREEN WITH THE WORDS NO SIGNAL !!1 I TRIED IT ON ANOTHER TV WITH DIFFERENT HDMI CABLES ETC TO MAKE SURE IT WAS THE PLAYER WITH SAME RESULTS ... NO SIGNAL .. THERE IS NO OBVIOUS BURNT CAPS ON THE BOARD THAT I CAN SEE ... THERE IS ONLY ONE HDMI PORT COMING OUT OF THE RECORDER SO CAN'T TRY A DIFFERENT PORT WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST ! PLEASE
It could still be a capacitor, it's sounds like it by the way it's failed. They don't always bulge or give you a sign they are gone. You would need an ESR meter to properly test the caps.
Ive recapped of these but the video side still isnt working , it doesnt respond when you put a tape in , no error codes , no life at all from the video side ?
@@RetroElectronicRepair yeh i found a schematic and checked all the voltage rails and they were all there , the problem was me , before i recapped it and soldered a load of dry joints , it wasnt doing anything at all, no display , no lights , so after i got it running , i presumed the please wait message was an error because of the vcr side seemingly having no power , turns out i just wasnt waiting long enough (ive never worked on a vcr before ) , when it initiallised it worked fine , video side came to life
I should add that i was "getting round" the please wait message, and getting the the vcr to turn on by toggling the power switch at the outlet , but only the dvd side was working .( before i realised im an idiot and just wasnt waiting long enough haha)

What does the code f60 mean
I think f60 can also be caused by bad capacitors.

I was going to say I thought 1A was one of the AV channels. The HDMI port could just have been been a bit dirty.

Have you check power is getting over to the other board though the board connectors?

They are the worst connectors ever! Glad they've died a death and not really used now.
