Dylan is the GOAT. He has more songs to be covered than any other artist. He was awarded the Nobel prize for literature. Literally hundreds of great songs. Everybody lists him as their influence. He is just simply unmatched.

"I Shall Be Free" is just a novelty song, amusing as a contrast to Dylan's GREAT songs. By 1964 Dylan was astonishing the world with brilliant poetic writing, changing popular music, he was labeled "the voice of his generation". My recommendations: Dylan's greatest early writing on his 2nd Album, try "A Hard Rain Is Gonna Fall" and "Masters of War". His 5th Album has "It's Alright Ma, (I'm Only Bleeding)", "Mr. Tambourine Man", "Gates Of Eden", and his first electric songs "Subterranean Homesick Blues" and "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream'. Then try his classic rock song "Like A Rolling Stone" from his 6th Album.

Holy crap. Never heard this one. I’m 69. The Cassius Clay segment was too good! He was sparring with the heavyweight champion poet! Clay used to make up rhymes for his opponents prior to the fight.
Prior to fighting Sonny LIston he wrote his most famous: Yes, Muhammad Ali, formerly known as Cassius Clay, was known for his poetic trash-talking before his fights. One famous example is his rhyme before his fight with Sonny Liston in 1964: "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. The hands can't hit what the eyes can't see." This became one of his most iconic sayings.
Also: Yes, Ali often made predictions about which round his opponent would go down. One famous example is his prediction before his fight with Liston: "Liston keeps backing, but there's not enough room. It's a matter of time until he meets his doom. I'm gonna float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, George can't hit what his hands can't see. Now you see me, now you don't. He thinks he will, but I know he won't. They tell me George is good, but I'm twice as nice. And I'm gonna stick to his butt like white on rice. That's why I'm here tonight." Ali predicted he would knock Liston out in the 8th round, and he did exactly that.

For sheer poetry - It's All Right Ma, I'm Only Bleeding. For fun - Subterranean Homesick Blues. For powerful performance - One More Cup of Coffee, live from the Rolling Thunder tour. For storytelling - Brownsville Girl. For the sheer sweep of American 20th Century history - Murder Most Foul. And for the song that invented Rock and changed popular music forever - Like a Rolling Stone. Of course you could take each song on my list and legitimately add a dozen others - aside from Like a Rolling Stone, and even that has Subterranean Homesick Blues as a close rival.

Dylan spent much of this album shooting down people's misconceptions of him, one of the big ones being people calling him the spokesman of his generation and another being people thinking he had answers to all the troubles in the world. That's why he begins this song telling folks that he's just like everyone else. He continued that theme with It Ain't Me Babe, All I Really Want To Do, and most notably My Back Pages.

This was the first Bob Dylan album I ever bought and it blew my mind. It changed everything for me. It's when I first started playing the guitar. A very influential album for me. Bob really showed his sense of humor back then. I'm 76 now and I still do a lot of his songs at open mics. By the way, I think I bought that album around 1964 or so. Great reaction.

New subscriber here. I really appreciated your reaction and particularly your openness. I'm hardly alone in saying Dylan was a big part of my healing from trauma as well as key to my survival when I was going trough it. Dylan is a safe place to be when you're getting yourself sorted out, good for your empathy, good for your intellect and good for smiles. What he shares though his artistic expression, makes him an excellent and enriching companion. Keep up the good work.

"Another Side of..." is an underrated album. Some great songs (though I would not really call this song one of them), take the time to check out "Chimes of Freedom" and "To Ramona." If you like this talkin' blues style, "Talkin' WW III Blues" is much better.

The rhyming scheme kind of reminds me of the Simon and Garfunkel song "A Simple Desultory Philippic (or How I Was Robert McNamara'd into Submission)" from their album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. Worth a listen. 😊

This is a weird one to pick for him to react to. It's a good song, but there's so much other Dylan I would show to a new listener first. Like a Rolling Stone, Visions of Johanna, The Times They Are a-Changin, Blowin' in the Wind, Tangled Up In Blue, Ballad of a Thin Man, Queen Jane Approximately, Don't Think Twice It's Alright, Lily Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, Hurricane...so many that I think are more than worth a new listener's time.

Visions of Joanna!! Do that one, its kind of like Bob at the height of his meth/heroin phase, very trippy but also beautiful. There's a live version that's really good but there might be blocking issues, best of luck with the channel

Another Side of BD is a transitional album from "topical" to "personal" He was itching to "go electric" There are some great songs on this album but I think he was a bit bored and recorded it very quickly.

Great track, glad you enjoyed it. You should now do Talkin World War III blues off his next album which uses a similar tune and rhyme structure and to me is a little more polished.

    • @Gravel-Idle

@@L33Reacts it's a long, challenging task but if you listen to his tracks in chronological order you can see his progression from folk to protest singer to being his own self (the current album) to electric to gospel etc. He is amazing. Well worth reading a good biography to get a better understanding of him too.

He recorded this album drunk as crap on red wine & it shows but thats whats great about it too...anyway, this is prob my least fave song on it..."spanish harlem incident", i still cant really think of a precident for that song, its just a work of art. "Motorpyscho Nightmare" is the other silly one, but the rest is so great. "Ballad in Plain D" bob has said he regrets writing it, critics said it was like "reading someone's mail" because its way T.M.I. & it *is*, but it is but its a really pretty & sad song, its art...so, point is, this silly song, "motorpsyco nightmare" & "ballad in plain d" are my only critisisms of the album (all of which are at least interesting), but every other song is a gem..."my back pages" is a GD masterpiece, hes obviously intoxicated & slurring his words like a hank williams demo recording, but its such a middle finger to all the political people trying to typecast & pigeon-hole him...that song captures a moment in art history, & the poetry of it , i think, is as good as mr. Tambourine man.
