Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I tried the arbitrary color exercise when you talked about it in a previous video and it was a huge step up for me. Thanks for the suggestion, Chris. I highly recommend that exercise!

Squinting at your picture was a huge pointer for me!!
I never thought about it, just more focused on getting it right instead of the getting that soft blend first

I drew a portrait the other day after a long spell away from drawing. I realise how easy it is to slide into old 'frequent mistakes'. My main mistake being not ensuring the facial features are mapped out properly. I tend to put one eye and eyebrow in the wrong place and the face ends up looking slightly twisted. More practice while reciting 'I will map features correctly' like a mantra! 😁

Really good advice, was going to subscribe but realised I already am whoops! The best thing my high school art teacher taught me was don't be afraid to go darker (i.e. leaving stuff on the table).

I like the way you word things where I can comfortably follow along and understand. I think most of my trouble comes from jumping into the little things too fast. Especially on clothing. I always want to precisely make little tiny details in fabric and lace patterns and I get stuck and frustrated.

You should do a video using the Zorn palette to help with value studies. It's amazing how so much can be done with so little.

Guilty! I am one of those who tends to get my brights too bright (white)....it's a struggle for sure. Love the tips of painting a black and white, and also the arbitrary color one. Will have to try both of those. Do you have any tips for painting a color portrait from a black and white photo? That would be really helpful too!! Thanks so much Chris!

  • @PHeMoX

Imagine entering an AA meeting and revealing you have a 'value problem' LOL. You're definitely right though, the hardest part to get right and to show the real form of a likeness, is definitely in the values. I have a tendency of creating a contrast that's too strong, resulting in an older looking version of who I am painting. So, definitely need to triple check values a lot.
