@@paintcoach Id second that- dunno how to put it but you sort of added a level of maturity overnight! Dead good chief. (Says he that is completely pants!).
Bro every time I watch one of these my paintings get better immediately. Regret not listening to my art teachers 🥴🤣 thanks for the free advice as always!
This was the best video I’ve watched about planes of the face! When you talk about your experiences, it’s like I’ve been at that exact spot. Maybe it’s the Italian in us thinking alike lol
Wow! just amazed by your painting style...I just watched all your videos and now I am your big fan..... I'm a student of visual arts, from India! Keep inspiring...^^
Hey Mr. Chris! Your level of skill in art is God like and I trust that you will be given every good thing you want in life! All the goods! Wealth, fame, honor, knowledge, love whatever you want and more!!!!!!! If you agree please shout OOOOOORRAAAHH!!!!!!!
Your videos on face planes really helped me understand how to see the colours in a portrait. Do you wait for the layers to dry before painting over them? Thank you for sharing so clearly!
Chris, I say your still one of the best with portraits. I remember your work from a couple years ago. You were in a different studio. I love your new one. 🌴. Tallahassee
I tried to do a portrait the other day.... It was a complete disaster. I believe this was my problem. I think I'll go and find a picture of that head model and paint it a couple times. Thank for the tip!
so interesting. I can do an illustrative kind of face in pencil drawing. I shy away from painting faces. Making them realistic is difficult and then, how to go about painting the face seems even more so. I'm glad I watched this video as it takes some of the intimidation away. I know that I also have to practice at it as you stress. I will need to rewatch this a few times and then make an effort to try it.
You have improved so much over time ( if that's even possible ), thank you so much for these videos I'm going to start painting portraits again because of this lol thanks
Been binging your videos for techniques for this massive 60x60 painting project I’m working on & man !.. some of your videos helped correct little habits I’ve had for years. So far, piece is looking like my best work ! Bless you!!!
Thanks so much for this. I had a go at the exercise and couldn't believe how much it showed the importance of planes v features. Has made a significant difference for me.
Really glad I found your channel! The portrait painting tips have been helpful and I appreciate that you speak clearly quickly and get to the point. I'll be checking out your Patreon - thx for posting this vid
I procrastinated watching this video because I don't do portraits (yet). But the planes idea is super helpful with my landscapes and painting rocks! I should've known lol Thanks 👍
Great tip. Thanks a lot! I’m just starting my journey with the painting and I bombed the wall, because I know how my paintings should look like, while I’m painting it looks much more different. 😂Lol
You’ve just answered a question that I have been unable to find keywords to research. It’s been a forever struggle to not understand how to become more detailed in my work. I do more fantasy oriented paintings with creatures, more sci-fi leaning. However I would spend so much time struggling with direction of light for details, that it just didn’t feel real enough because it didn’t shift properly. I can see the image in my head, but could never make it make absolute sense when only using shifts in value, and not my now newly added word PLAINs!!!! Thank you!!! (Hope that made sense 😂)
I feel like this would help alot not just with portraits but hugely with "scenery" where the figures are at a distance and the detail is not even visible
Wow! Nice video Chris. I’m lost for words to describe your work. This video in particular is of great help! Thanks so much. I struggle with very light skin values, but I will keep trying. You are an amazing Coach! I truly appreciate all you do to keep us in check! Question: when using blues, is cobalt blue, ultramarine blue or Prussian blue equally used in portraits? Blessings and take care.
I literally didn't know how to draw a realistic looking nose until I saw a video on documenting the planes of the nose and all of a sudden, I could draw a realistic nose
Seems like you could maybe get small post it notes and stick them all over your face, to "see" where the planes are and how each paper surface catches the light differently. Or use that head app, that looks cool too
Chris, I really like your style of instruction and the quality of your work. Due to the chemical aspect of things and painting in my home I am using acrylics. My question is do you have students following you on Patreon that are using acrylic paint rather than oils? It seems to me a lot can be gleaned and only a few modifications would need to be made. Any others out there in this situation? Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thx
I been watching and enjoying your video’s for a while could you post the app you used I would love to check it out. I do look forward to all your video’s thank you.
I noticed that you paint in layers and sculpt, while other artsits like 'Alpay Efe' seem to just fill in the blanks with splotches of color. Do you know what these two different methods are, if one is easier than the other, or have any other opinions on them?
Hi! Thank you for this video! I can't find the Head Model app you are talking about...perhaps because I have an android phone? Can you please provide a link?
I love how your realism art look like a painting and not a digital picture. I love your style ❤
Exact words man...
His "realism art"?
You‘re getting so good with your art 😶 😳 love seeing your process and am very grateful for your shared knowledge 💙 thank you Chris☺️✨
Thanks!

This tutorial was instructive. Understanding the planes of the face have helped me in 2D vector animation.
Oh my gosh this was so good I was watching tv and instantly could see the plains on the people’s faces. So cool. Thanks
You are a very good portrait painter in oils. You capture the emotion very well

@ Williams > is Planes ( a Flat surface that has one common shade value)
