Update... my sister called the weekend after the repair and said that the washing machine passed her test. The washing machine didn't shake or make any loud noises when she washed 3 loads of towels, blankets, and bedsheets! Whew!
Dear Hacks by Dad, thanks for the video, perfect, Is the washer still working? Mine worked great for 2 weeks, now it goes out of balance when it first starts to spin, it corrects itself but still will shake pretty badly sometimes, even with small light loads?? Has anyone else had this problem? I love this old workhorse and really don't want a new fancy washer. Thank you for any and all help, Sincerley, Dana
@@HacksbyDad Mine also, shakes every now and then but a lot more lately, I also adjust load and it will be fine, its just frustrating to listen to the washer every wash, so I was hoping that there was another fix from you as your first fix worked amazing for 2 weeks. @@danagates163 you need damping grease. It’s very sticky. Opposite of regular grease. It comes on them from the factory. No body knows this secret. Don’t tell anyone lol
THANK YOU!!!! You’re the first video out of dozens that actually showed how to disassemble THIS model CORRECTLY!!! I have watched a million videos that my search linked me to and none were accurate & your video was extremely informative and to the point! Please keep making videos like this one
My Roper Top Loader works perfectly after replacing these parts. Every load of laundry before replacement would end up with the drum banging about, w alking the drain hose off, and water getting everywhere. This video saved me a lot of headaches.
I watched several videos on this subject before yours. I don't believe I have ever been more impressed. Your video was clear, well lit, to the point and had every tip I needed to make me feel at ease fixing our washer. No other video came close to the info, brevity and clarity of your video. To see if this was a fluke or if I could count on recommending your videos, I looked at one I thought I knew a little about, your video on how toilets work. It was just as clear and I learned something new from that one, I was surprised. Now, these are the only two I have watched, but I am very impressed. I passed your channel on to a local Facebook group I am in, I hope they give it a chance.
@@HacksbyDad OK, made the repair. As a 68 year old grandfather, I have a few suggestions. When you remove the rods, pay attention to the one set of hose and cables that run down the side of the wash basket. I forgot to and had to figure out which side of the rod they were on. Second, wear a pair of grippy work gloves and long sleaves for safety. Grippy gloves also make it easier to lift and hold the rods. Bonus, have grandma help a little bit and it is easier and more fun.
THIS WORKED. I had very little hope but I thought it was worth the money to make the attempt rather than fork out major money for a new washer. Thank you for your very well explained instructions. Got the set you recommended, replaced the rods, ball joints, and bushings, and then put a heavy load of towels and blankets to really put it to the test. Followed by a load of jeans. It was so quiet that I thought it wasn't spinning. AND it spins clothes close to dry again, like it did when it was brand new. I wish I had done this months ago. Gives my 11 year old Roper some more life. THANK YOU for saving me tons of money!
I did this yesterday and it works great. Really good tutorial. I would recommend identifying that you used no slip/grip gloves to finally secure the suspension rods. I tried doing this without gloves and had hard time holding the rods up, as they are greasy. Once I put on the gloves (as I saw you used in the video) it was much easier. I saw someone else recommended using something to prop up the tub, that probably would have worked as well.
I know this is an old video, and seems like such an easy fix, but thank you so much for teaching us young fellas how to fix the stuff our dads didnt , much love brother
This was an excellent video & I’ve saved it to rewatch it when I attempt to do the job. I rarely see a project explained as clearly or in such detail. I need to do this repair; however, having the space to tackle this may be an issue. I’m also concerned if I’ll have the strength needed to do the job alone (female,68). This will have to be diy only; unless you believe that I’ll need some extra help?
Thank you for the great video. I just finished replacing mine and it was harder than easy but my wife and I got it done. Now i see that some of the comments mention grease but I didn't hear it mentioned in the video. How important is it? I sure don't want to take it apart again.
O.K. a helpful hint. My buddy put 3 2x4 blocks on top of each other under the drum. This brought the drum up so you did not have to struggle to pull the old rods up.
When I searched for a fix, I didn't think I would find the exact brand and model I have. I have hated this machine since the day I bought it! The dryer works great, but the washer is a piece of you-know-what. Thanks for this video. I will definitely fix it myself now.
At my mom's old apartment the washing machine was shaking violently from the start. She got so tired of it that she would come over to my wife and I's home and do her laundry here. I thought it was just a crappy machine, and it probably still is, but seeing this makes me wish she was still living there just so I could do this repair! The machine was an Amana, but it looks damn near the same.
My husband always says only a couple companies that make most appliances and others only stick their name on them. So sad .without competition, there is no incentive for companies to make quality items. Certainly is no quality control these days with anything. Nothing I have purchased will last the way items my mom and dad purchased will.
The bottom spring hooks do you put it back in its original hole or put em in the square hole? Well I’m doing it now and I’m going to find out real soon lol
One time our washer was out of balance and my wife called the repair man. The repair man came and just turned the knob a 1/16” turn to the proper setting, fixed the imbalance and charged us $30 for that. Hence, make sure the knob is not between two settings and put the arrow exactly on the setting it is supposed to be on. I called the Maytag company and they told me they couldn’t do anything about this. I replied that they could have put a warning about having the knob between settings in the owner’s manual. I was told that they would look into it, but I don’t think they ever put this correction on the new Maytag washer manuals.
I bought the suspension rods through Amazon but theirs like a sticky substance around the white part of the rod and coil. Is that normal? I tried looking on the seller page but no info. Is it supposed to be sticky? Someone said it’s lubricant but idk??
none of the damper replacement instructions i referenced mention that the best way to install new dampers is to place the washer on it's sides to allow easy installation. Not being superman, I could not pull the new rod up thru the the top with the washer vertical. The whole procedure is best accomplished with the washer on it's side for each side.
