There are basically two reasons in my opinion:
Firstly, it iss commonly accepted that cats have a rather low thirst drive. And because we feed our cats very often with dry kibble food, we must be aware that our cats don’t get dehydrated. So we need to stimulate our cats to drink enough water on a daily basis to avoid urinary or kidney diseases.
Secondly, it seems that cats don’t like to drink standing water in a bowl. I experienced this every day before we had a drinking fountain when Casper jumped on the bathroom counter to drink at the faucet. Clearly cats like drinking from running or moving water.

I just bought this water fountain for my 2 Siamese kitties. It is one of their Christmas gifts. They both love drinking from the fountain much more than a bowl. The fountain I got actually has a water view feature.

Got one of these for the kitchen. Picking up a couple of the blue LED ones for the bedroom and basement. The cats love them. They are not noisy. Unless you are in a completely quiet room you won't hear it. Fridge is louder.

Someone else said in another video that you shouldn't put so much water in only about half of the container because supposedly the filter shouldn't be immersed in the water

Hello Annette, Both our fluffs like the fountain very much too! And no, no more water bowls any more, just the fountain!
YES.....always leave a water bowl down! If the fountain stops working.....power cut / problem, the cats will have no water!! Also, leave a bowl down while your cat is “learning” to use the fountain. The CATIT LED (Blue colour) fountain is better than this one, because it has indented spaces for the water to sit in at the top disc, so....if the fountain stops working, the cat will have water available. I think it is Catit’s newer model. Check it out.

Is the plastic top healthy for cats drinking from it and how long does the filter needs to be changed??

I guess that Catit makes sure that the plastic is not unhealthy for cats. So we must rely on that.
The filter stays active for 30 days and afterwards only mechanical filtering (dust, hairs) is working. So normally you have to change the filter every 30 days.
