I met Micky at Ralphs market shortly after a show they did here in LA after Davy died. I usually leave stars alone, especially older ones like he, who has had people jockeying for a slice of his time for decades. But I had to tell him how impressed I was by their show. That instead of speeding through their hits by rote, collecting a paycheck and saying "buh-bye," he, Mike and Peter really put a lot into it to make sure we were fully indulged and entertained. They added new instruments to old songs to make them even more fresh and charged. They had a video presentation of their late comrade Davy in between songs. They joked and bantered with each other as if they were in between takes of one of their TV shows. Micky is like Jimmy Durante in that he can breathe new life into old jokes and still make them hilarious. That’s a rare talent. It was awesome across the board. I also told him that I had acting class with his daughter Ami 20 years previous.
Micky took it all graciously. I am a boxing history fanatic, so I had to ask him what former heavyweight champion Sonny Liston was like to work with on “Head.” He said he didn’t recall, which I got the feeling was his standard response when he didn’t want to talk about the past too much (and why would he? He has to do it every dang time he’s interviewed, so why stress his mind to find the memories to indulge a singular being like me?). I could see he wanted to leave and get on with his day, so I shook his hand and told him I appreciated him and let it go at that.
I am good at “feeling” people and gauging their body language. As I turned away I saw him look into the distance, as if saying “this guy is wanting just a minute or two of time with me. Is he asking so much?”
Next thing I knew he re-engaged me to tell me how his daughter had married a kickboxer, etc. I was, to quote the British, gobsmacked. I saw exactly what he was doing, and I loved him for it. He was putting me, a lifetime fan of his work, ahead of his “time” and schedule.
I loved him for that and always will. Micky is an actor, musician, comedian, director and multi-talented artist.
But most important of all, he is a human who loves and empathizes with other humans. He has not lost the common touch.

I had the pleasure of meeting Dave twice.He had a horse farm in the middle of Pennsylvania I lived the next county over and was visiting my mom in the hospital and stopped for gas when this truck pulled over to the other pump and out came Davey Jones he was incredibly polite and we talked for about 15 minutes about a year later saw him there again same thing.
Micky Dolenz is someone I would very much like to meet.
I lost my Mom to cancer when I was 13. It was a sudden thing. That was in 1967. I became very isolated. The Monkees (both the show and the records) were such a "Happy Place" for me in the middle of grappling with that. Micky was my fav. I would sit by the stereo playing their records, slamming on air drums, singing and pretending I was Micky. I would get lost in it...and for just a little while, everything was alright with the world. I'm just one grain of sand...one of a legion of stories about what a difference The Monkees and other show biz folks can make for someone. Yes indeed, Mr. Dolenz...you were a major help for me. Thank you so very much! Thank you Mr. Famularo for this interview. Your kind and thoughtful vibe brought out a deeper, beautiful side of Micky. When he started tearing up, I was right along with him. Excellent job!

Great singer, and when they started figuring out (and taking the time) harmonizing with Peter and Mike, it was a complete game changer. Too bad they didn't think of it sooner or continue it a little longer.
Micky Dolenz was the reason I chose to become a drummer as a child in the 60s. I had kind of a hard family life with a mother who was frequently in the hospital, and a father always working trying to pay the bills. The Monkees were my escape, and in some ways became my surrogate family. I remember jamming to More of the Monkees on my parents Tupperware for hours. Trying to start up neighborhood bands with my friends. Making tambourines out of two paper plates filled with beans. Lol.
I was fortunate to see Micky perform a solo show at the Waukesha county fair in Wisconsin. He did a meet and greet and I was able to share this with them. It was actually a lifelong dream to meet him and he was very gracious! Thanks Micky!!

A class act, to be sure. I bumped into Mickey at Costco almost three years ago and exchanged pleasantries. The gentleman that he is, he was gracious and friendly. What you see is what you get with this man. This was an excellent interview.

I will forever say that the person that picked him (and Davy) to be the vocalists of The Monkees hit it out of the park. What a complete package Mickey is.. History has been kind to this guy.

Mickey is so talented and was the raised right way while in the industry as a child. Surprised he didn't do more acting, especially comedy as he seems like such a natural. And then his singing voice is very unique. His interviews are entertaining to say the least! And to top it off a great guy!

If I hadn't discovered the Monkees, and specifically Mike Nesmith and Micky Dolenz, at the age I did(13) I wouldn't be the man I am today and due to a rough last couple of years (death of wife, grandmother and friends) I don't know if I would even be alive. "Good Times" the album, stopped me from killing myself. I love you Mick, give my love and all the best to Mike for me.

My sister who was 4 years older than me was a huge Monkey fan. She had dozens of Pictures all over the bedroom wall she cut out of magazines like Tigerbeat and others. I use to play her Monkey albums when she wasn’t home. We always watched the show. The Monkeys alway fill me with tons of nostalgia of my youth in the late sixties!
1966 was a critical year for me but I didn't realize then that two series premiering that year would have such an impact on my life. If anyone had told me that "Star Trek" and "The Monkees" would still entertain me at the age of 66 in 2021, I would've have laughed and thought they were nuts.
This interview is so great! Micky can’t help but entertain. He’s always interesting, but it’s wonderful seeing and hearing him just talk about the history of things.

Having grown up in the 1960s watching THE MONKEES I'm so glad to hear Mickey's 'inside reminiscence' of what to me was a TV show, a media-driven pop music phenomenon, and of course the recordings. For me personally, the most important aspect was the music, and THE MONKEES were part of the reason I majored in music in undergraduate school. I well remember listening to my sister's MONKEE albums even more than she did, figuring out "Shades of Gray" at the keyboard and then arranging it for my high school Jazz Ensemble, and teaching myself background vocals from their album cuts.
I'm so glad to see that Mickey feels the connection to members of his audience who have told him how his participation mattered in the wider world to improve their lives in some salient way. We love YOU--Mickey Dolenz the actor and musician, NOT just the TV show character--too!
Mickey, by doing a musical ACTOR'S job, has managed something I haven't as a lifelong composer--to create and connect with an audience. Musicians like me who write need to exercise our creativity but then also need performers and recordings to carry our work far and wide to make that connection, and I've unfortunately only succeeded in the creative stage of that process. So Mickey is right that there's both an artistic component and a business component. My issue has always been that the creative phase alone already takes all the energy I have to give, but he's correct that the business phase--promotion--has to happen too. Maybe someday someone will discover my scores, like them enough, and then the connection can be made and completed for me too. In the meantime: THANKS for the shared experience, insights, and advice, Mickey. I'm glad we have shared an era together.
I have loved the monkees all my life
I had the honor of meeting this man. Went to an after-party gathering with his family. Watch as he talked to a young man 12 or 14 who wanted to be a singer. He talked about heartbeats, feeling the passion and the music. Then we talked science and about wood crafts. Found him to be real like a dad or big brother. This was all after him being on stage for 2-3 hours. One of my best life experiences next to meeting the President

I always liked Micky - he was always my favorite Monkee. I always knew that people enjoyed being around him (stories about the club he had with Alice Cooper, Nilsson, Keith Moon, etc). I had no idea how brilliant he is.
Takes a classy guy like DOM to finally give a classy guy like Mickey a great chance to speak. Most interviewers ask the same inane questions and make Mickey go over silly stuff... Micky is an extraordinary artist, singer, songwriter, musician and of course actor, as well as a director and producer. The man has done it all. I'm sure his parents always thought that he would amount to something, but who would have thought that he would amount to everything. My Son and I had the pleasure of meeting him some years ago. Micky was so kind. He took my Son aside and spent time with him, introducing him to to members of his touring band and the road crew. It is a fond memory for Son still today, spending time with a living legend. Micky has the best voice in rock and roll, hand down. The man is a true gentleman. One wonders when the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame will get it's head out of it's rear and induct him and his band mates into it. As a musician myself, I can say that he has was an inspiration to me and many other musicians I know. So all the best to Micky, a great man.

When I was just five year's old in the mid 67 or 1968, I've had crush on Micky Dolenz The Monkees. And every late
Friday when it's time for me to go to bed, when The Monkees came I would sit there and watch Micky Dolenz playing
his drums playing perform a long with Pete Mick and Davy Jones. But every time I would watch Micky Dolenz, my
heart pounded with crush on Mickey. I was not older enough to be a teenager yet and I had a crush on Mickey Dolenz.
I was only five year's old. That I do remember.

Micky nailed it! It's the emotion. It's the secret to performance. You can fake emotion by identifying the components and replicating them. Lots of singers and performers do not understand emotion and how to create it. He understands it. I love it! Part of the secret is to listen to people when they express their emotions.....the words are easy to see....the timing, volume, and attack a bit harder....it's subtle in many emotions. The phrasing can be carried over to a lyric, script, or even an instrumental. He sells emotion! Genius!
What a lovely, interesting, and talented man. And with his sharp sense of observational humor and comic timing intact! Micky was my favorite Monkee (and the love of my life in 1966 when I was nine! Lol!). I never fully appreciated how truly groundbreaking the show was until now. I was deeply affected by the deaths of his band mates, all of them way too young, IMO. Micky and Michael were in the middle of a tour when Michael passed last year.
May he be blessed with many more years on this earth.

I was like 3 when the Monkees debuted on TV. Micky always was the funniest to me. He was also the guy who was too busy to put anybody down, total class act, even when things did not go so well for him or the group. And then they had a huge comeback.

A friend of mine, a guy from Worcester, pronounced "wooooosta", who loved to play golf but was oblivious to a lot of other stuff, went to play at the local course. The course manager asked him if he would play with another couple because they were new to the course. It turned out to be Mickey Dolenz and his significant other, who were on Cape Cod for a gig at the Melody Tent. My friend had no idea who he was. When i asked him what Mickey was like, he responded, "He was funny but a terrible golfer." So i guess among his many talents, golf, at least at that time, was not one of his strong suits.
Fantastic! Fantastic! Incredible! interview. Dom is a great interviewer and Mickey puts out so much knowledge about the business. I've never heard it described that way. "Our cargo is emotion". Watch the whole video until the very end because that is where the gems of knowledge are. So good!

Nothing much to smile about these days with the pandemic but I ran across this interview with Mickey and I found myself SMILING!
His time was entirely his own immediately post-Monkees. Sleep in and get up whenever he felt like it. Stay up as late as anything. Just bludging around in comfort. He eventually went UK a fair bit thereafter, with theater work and TV show production in the UK.

Probably the best interview with Micky. Finally an interviewer who lets his guest speak! Also, Micky is purely wonderful. He seems like such a nice, genuine person. Super down-to-earth and kind. He and Mike were always my favs. Micky more simply because he seemed a little more approachable than Mike. Also, the part where he gets choked up is beautiful. I have loved The Monkees since I am 12 (I am 34 now). I always felt a little weird or unlike kids in my generation, but when I saw The Monkees on Nick At Night, I was hooked. Something about them just grabbed me. Maybe it's because they spoke to the 'weirdos' of the world. They were very comforting to me.

Great interview . I've met Micky a few times , most recently at a meet & greet last year in Kent , Ohio. He was very nice and friendly with all of his fans . This appears to be a wonderful series , I saw a few others I will watch when time allows. Also the host was very , very good !!! I will definitely subscribe to this.

Dom, I think this is one of the best interviews you've done so far, period. Loved the stories with Micky, one of my earliest musical heroes. Never knew he was such a scientist, and wanted to be an architect. Thankfully that didn't work out and he had to settle for being a cultural music icon! :) Also, be the vacuum cleaner salesman, and the vacuum! Are you kidding me, absolutely fantastic stuff! Micky also makes small wooden furnishings such as stools, shelves etc. i believe he markets them as Dolenz and Daughgters. He is into gardening also
Mickey Dolenz is an amazing talent!
Mr. Dolenz is an interesting man , multi-talented. I personally think he has one of the best rock & roll voices I ever heard. When you listen to Mikes version of " The girl I knew somewhere" vs. Mike's version the difference is Mickey's voice could make it a top 40 hit. And I say that as a Huge Mike Nesmith fan.
The Beatles are the best ever, but I love the Monkees way more…

Interesting that Mickey and Davy both started in showbiz young but while Mickey was born into the biz and it was a natural part of life for him, Davy didn't have that background at home with his immediate family. Davy 's rise to fame was very much self made, in that he came upon it , of his own ! Both very talented and funny and both clearly meant for showbiz!
It's amazing that his voice almost hasn't changed at all.

Micky is a neat guy! I stumbled upon his autobiography at the Santa Monica Library back in the 90's. It has a witty title, "I'm a Believer - my life of Monkees, Music & Madness". It may be a bit dated now as Davy, Peter and Mike were all still alive at the time he wrote it. Still, it's a good read for Micky Dolenz and Monkee fans alike.

"Sometime in The Morning" -- what a beautiful, dreamy song. It's always been one of my Monkee favorites as well. There's just something indescribable about the way it makes me feel. Such a gem.
