My personal opinion if possible use a 6 point socket or box wrench would more likely prevent scratching but what del uses Vice grip is very handy. Either way works.
I've never had the need to tackle front fork maintenance yet seeing as I had the seals done by a mechanic right after i bought the bike and before i went full send on the DIY road but for some reason i've just never been enthusiastic about doing it. Thanks for breaking it down simple as this. Keep well and take care.

Great job as always Del a pleasure to watch. After watching an old vid of yours I changed the fork oil on my Harley Sportster anniversary edition. The top nuts were an oddball size 35mm so had to order a socket to fit. I decided to extract the old oil with a manual pump as there is no bleed screw on the anniversary model. 2013 model and judging by the colour had never been changed. As you say it makes a massive difference. It was a wrestling match trying to compress the spring and reinstall the cap nut but all ended well. Hi Paul, it sounds like you need to invest in some imperial tools, it's always an issue with owning your first Harley, that 35mm is probably 1.1/4" and any imperial socket set will cover that, so maybe a future investment! I measured it with the calipers at 35mm but must have had a brain fart as I have a couple of sets of imperial spanners and sockets including 1 1/4" think I read on a Harley forum that it was 35mm but I should have known better. I know the brakes tend to be metric and maybe wheel nuts as I used a 36mm on the rear axle nut but maybe that's imperial also. I did use masking tape on the fork bolts as they are chrome plated and it was a snug fit but next time it will be the 1 1/4" thanks for the tip! Really enjoying keeping the Harley in good nick all thanks to you. Cheers mate. 🇸🇪🇬🇧😊👋🏻
@@clark7169 Sure thing buddy.. in fact if you have a full set of imperial tools, it can help you out in other ways even on a Japanese bike... say for instance if you have a slightly chewed 13mm bolt head, the socket is going to slip and further round it off.. then you can try tapping on a 1/2" as that translates to 12.7mm... and that works for a fair few sizes.. 11/16" is a tight fit on an 18mm, 8mm is exactly 5/16, and we all know that 19mm is very slightly smaller than 3/4". so it gives you options and that's always good right..!!

Ps I recently bought a brake fluid catcher fitted with a valve mid way down the flexible hose which stops air or fluid being drawn back up the hose meaning I only had to pump on the brake lever and pedal until the new fluid came through, meaning that no opening and shutting of the brake valve nipple was necessary. It is simple and effective and under £20 in English money from my local biltema store. Just thought I'd give it a mention as you may find it useful to save a bit of time and effort. At my age I'm always looking for the easiest option. PPS I recently changed the primary oil and used marine grade transmission oil 75w-90 synthetic which is resistant to frothing, oxidation and water. Tried it last year as an experiment with no clutch slip in all conditions so went for it again as it's the same viscosity as Harley recommend. It may come in useful as I know you like to experiment. Always love this type of maintenance videos....and yes, it'll be time for my first fork oil change on the T7 before long! Like another has said, I may be better served with a slightly heavier oil than standard! It's been pretty cold here for the last month, with many nights around -10 C, and not warming up much during the day. Great time of year to be enjoying the warmth of a wood-burning stove! :-) Cheers to you both!
Hi Allen, i usually consider the heavier oils for warmer weather, this bike has 5W and they felt really compliant and comfortable, but i guess comfort is subjective and we should always have what we are happy with.. you can also mix 5W and 10W to make a 7.5 if the 10 is too heavy for the cold. Hope you're all keeping warm in the weather, we've just had a winter storm blow through, but nowhere as cold as there with you.. Keep everyone safe.. D&Px

Another fantastic video, well done Del, very clear and informative. ! I've got a KTM 990 Adeventure 12 yrs old and no mention of it ever been done in the service history by the garage - gonna have a go myself, never done it myself before - are the fork internals roughly the same?
Ive never been inside a set of KTM forks, but they have always been slosely related with Husky, so it would be logical to think they could well be the same.. The service manual will tell you. !

It's a fully synthetic 5W as recommended, not sure what was in there before and I guess once I get to ride it, I'll see how much better it is! Good luck with yours mate.
Thank you, Del, for another great Friday evening :) Which oil have you used - 5w or 10w? In my Aprilia Pegaso 650 cube I tried both and found, that 10w works better for me. Still plush ride, but much more controlled, than 5w. BTW I think Aprilia Pegaso 650 cube, BMW GS 650 and this Husky were produced on the same plant (of Aprilia?), as they share the same concept - alu frame + Rotax engine with the chain on the righthand side, brembo brakes and maybe other parts
It depends, some people mix and match to get the feeling they want, you could put 50/50 5/10w and get around 7.5 if you wanted. A lighter rider/and kit vs a more rotund fellow wouldn't normally run the same amount.
Sure thing brother, and it seems only Harley have the common sense to put a drain bleed screw at the bottom of the fork leg... and they say Harley's are unrefined!
I asume fork gaitors went out of fashion in the late '70 because of style. Funny what folks do to their bikes for fashion 🤪 Can believe its not a good practice to install gaitors with any seal maintenance or fork oil change. What's your view on installing gaitors on upside down forks?

The garage I take my bike to keeps avoiding the oil change for the forks, several times I've asked for their input and they reply that it's not worth doing. Bike has close to 30k miles on it 5 years old. I value their judgement but videos on YT make a point that it should be changed at some point.
I could have Ian, it's not a fatigue issue, they're only 11Nm torque, no more then an engine casing screw, but they're pretty corroded on the heads, and they're pretty cheap being M6, so why not just replace them with new ones..!

dell m6 countersunk torx high tensile are quite east to get from you local fasteners place . you normally have to buy the full box but wen dose m6 come in wrong
These aren't countersunk, they square, shallow heads and 5mm shouldered, and that's the point, i chomp through regular M6 screws all the time, hex and button caps, i buy them by the 100...but not these, and they're not expensive compared to bigger disc bolts either.

If you put a nitrile rubber glove over the fork cap nuts before loosening this ensures no marks, especially if they are hard anodised.

Yes indeed, that's the main reason i bought those grips, perfect for opening fork caps with those shallow heads that are usually soft alloy.!

I believe the Pegaso, the GS 650 and this Husky all have different forks.!!

This may be a bit of a stupid question, but how do you know if you're forks are still in line when you reassemble them?

I didn't say M5 mate, i said 5mm shoulder, the un-threaded part of the screw is 5mm.. the screws are M6
