This is magnificent insanity. Before I die I would love to hear this at the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. Imagine the 15 trumpets in an arc at the back of the stage in front of the magnificent RAH organ playing to the best audience in music. What a treat that would be. The acoustics of this magnificent hall are much maligned, but in the right place (back half of the arena behind the fountain) the acoustics are excellent. RAH is my spiritual home and I’ve attended 100s of Proms over the years. So BBC let’s get this “craziness” programmed. I love it.
What a build up in the beginning. And then 6:36 Rehearsal 36 starts extremely calm yet foreboding. It gets so crazy again at 20:35. Another section at 12:35
I have always wanted to play this. I have been the organist for the Louisville Orchestra for 44 years. Now that I have seen the score, not so sure. That's a lot of work for just scale pay.
My car stereo system rocks this. When I pull up next to a little boy and his beats, with his windows right down, I turn up, drop my windows and he can't hear Jack Shit of his 'chunes'.
Yeah, the organ makes it on this recording. But also the higher trumpets, cuz they keep it going (or they used a few assistants...apparently 15 extra trumpets aren't enough!)
As much as this symphony is marvelous and exciting, there is a small copyright infringement to Lutoslawski's first symphony at 6:04. The same chord that open's the latter's symphony (missing the top c though). 😁 Lutoslawski started his symphony earlier although both were completed in 1947.
Was Poland a member of the international copyright union in 1947? The Soviet Union wasn't. That's why nearly everything Shostakovich wrote is in the public domain in most of the world. I doubt he saw a kopeck in royalties coming from the non-Soviet world. And even if copyright did exist, you'd have to show that Khachaturian was aware of Lutoslawski's symphony at that time, something of which I very much doubt. But if he did know of Lutoslawski's symphony, he'd be stealing from a better composer. 😁
