This has always been one of my favorites though less well-known to his Roman Trilogy. Respighi was such a master orchestrator and this gem of a work clearly shows his genius and his knowledge of all the orchestral instruments and what they are capable of both technically and in terms of color, especially in the winds. One example of his orchestration skills is in the middle of the first movement when it cuts down to a mere wind trio of oboe, clarinet, and bassoon, yet manages to make it sound so full and sonorous. Absolutely superb writing...and the second movement is one of my all-time favorite slow movements from the classical repertoire...stunningly beautiful.
I still don’t understand why he wrote for horn in E (mi). Pretty sure F horns were standard by then. Granted he writes for horn in F in most of his pieces and there’s no doubt he is a wonderful orchestrator. But I still don’t get it, did he expect the horn players to transpose. Same with bass clarinet in A which I’m pretty sure was also obsolete
@@RyanEntnerMusic I imagine he felt that the instruments in F and B-flat might have trouble when the movement is in E. Maybe he had access to players who played E horns and A bass clarinets?
Really show's Respighi's expertise with orchestration.
Love this work. Fragrant, melodic, dreamy. The last movement Venus I just adore. Really interesting following the score to see how Respighi created these wonderful sounds.
This splendor of words cannot arrive
Incredible after 70 years to follow an actual SCORE for "Venus"....to get some vague notion of how Respighi DID it.....mind-blowing....impossible.....heaven-sent.....
....and STILL a Marvel years later......BRAVO from Mexico City!

Doesn’t the second movement include a Christmas carol
Yes, "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" and the Italian "Tu scendi dalle stelle"
@@matthewernat7466 very nice
@@matthewernat7466 It is years since I last heard this, and never noticed the 'O come, O come, Emmanuel quote in the second movement until listening to it just now!
