I got to use some of the 4-foot versions on a shoot a couple months ago. We mounted them with mathellinis and used hand dimmers on them. The "Harbor Freight" router speed controller-type dimmers will only dim these about halfway, so when we needed to go lower we used low-current household lamp dimmers that would dim all the way. They were rentals, so they may have been older versions because they didn't have the powercon connector cables. Very nice lights!
I light my entire live stream workbench with just 3 of their 4' T8 LED fixtures. They are exceptionally bright. Love them. As for what to destroy, test the Quasars with whatever the worst you have seen on set...
Always make sure to squeeze the sides of the power adapter not only when releasing but also when attaching it to the Quasar. Quasars that get rented a lot barely even hold anymore from people pressing them on without squeezing.
I love mine. I bought a set of four and swapped them out of my kino kit. Mine get pretty hot though after an hour interview. Almost too hot to handle but nothing like an Arri kit. I also thought they were constructed really strong but crazy thing is I had mine only a foot off the ground and it fell straight down vertically hitting the end without the power clip and it took the light out. Stopped working. Thankfully I sent it in and Quasar fixed it right up free of charge since I only had the lights for less than a week at that time.
Those are really sweet. Very versatile.
i have a lot of them including some of the 8 foots. the 8 foots are killer and i love the mywayplates you can hook muiltable plates together if you want
You did a great episode on Sash & Trickline about a year ago. I think it would be interesting -- and informative -- to see how much weight was required to make each of the various sizes fail. **But I really like Cody Jones' idea of testing out the drop ceiling scissors clamp**
I. LOVE. MY QUASARS. Picked up 4 25Xs (from our friends at Lightbulb - Hi Adam! Thanx for that Lutron dimmer tip!) and have been using them for a couple weeks now, adapted into one of my Kino 4x2 frames (the ballast was shot anyway...). They are all the things you mentioned (even the slightly arousing aspect, but let's not delve into that...) and I'll be getting more after I pay a few other bills. But I may cry if I see you drop one off a 4 story roof. Just sayin'.
If you haven’t already would love to see how rugged these bad boys are
yo can you do an episode on C stand t-bones set up for bounce
Wow that effect is really nice!
Do a test between a Matthews or American grip head and an Impact grip head in various rigging situations. Personally I’m not a fan of Impact, but I would like to see a maximum load comparison between the brands.
Jon Roberson yes!
This! I got a bunch of Impact gear when I was a student because B&H sold it cheaper.. I'm very curious as to why people poo poo on it. I want to know moving forward what the best stuff is.
Impact uses cheaper quality materials. I've had some Impact stuff crack under medium loads. Also Impact stuff is always heavier.
Crazy! I would have thought the extra weight was a nice thing.
Cody Jones The extra weight doesn’t mean much when the materials aren’t good to begin with. If they were using better materials the extra weight would have some benefit. I can’t attest to Impact cracking as much as I can attest to other issues. One problem is that their c-stand legs are held in place by bolts as opposed to being welded like American and Matthews. The problem with that is under consistent use the legs can loosen. I’ve had several impact stands randomly fall because the bolts decide to give. Another issue is with their grip heads. I cannot tell you how many countless times I’ve had Impact heads jam up on me. They jam all the time and only on a rare occasions have I had a Matthews or American head jam up on me. No product is perfect, but I can say that I’ve had plenty of real world negative encounters with Impact that have left me with a bad taste. If you’ve had a good experience then thats great, but I have not.
A Modern Baby Boom stress test would be great. Try counter balancing with ratchets and shot bags
You could maybe stress test a 2x4 wall spreader and speedrail spreader? If you can figure out a way to do it safely haha.
Tnks dave, you rock!
Great video!
Can we get a video where you drop test it from a few stories high?
I want that tubes
Can you find out how much weight can 4 full Apple boxes can endure in each position? Maybe, we could see a an F250 on 4 Apples in the the #3 position?
SUBSCRIBED! I can't believe I haven't seen your channel until now. I've only seen a few videos but I'm going to watch them all! I've assisted in SLC for 10 years but I'm excited to see what information you have to offer. If there is any, could you recommend other channels and or websites with resources for assisting, grip, or DIT work? THANKS!
Gage Thompson I recommend Gripsupport.com, “meet the gaffer” with Luke seerveld, Burnies Apple box, and the Black and Blue for AC/DIT work
If you have access to fisher or Chapman dollies, you should do a rundown on setups and operating.
great light is it battery powered for on location work
I checked out the website half way through and I was expecting a much higher price than they actually are for 95Cri, variable color temperature bulbs that can also dim w/out flicker
Could you do a side by side of the cineroid 405 and the sky panels? I really want to see them next to each other, but I havent had the opportunity yet, and I am about to shoot with the cineroid 405 next month for the first time. Skypanels I know well, so the comparison would save me a lot of grief
Is it safe to use the 1000w dimmer to dim all 4 of my 4 foot q50 watt crossfades?
nice vid...25 tubes safely with the 80% rule in effect that's 11.5 amps
I'm not an electrician, , I do however have a couple of mining rigs. and rule of thumb i to use only 80% of the breaker. 80% of 15A = 12A. 80% of 20A breaker is 16A. Is this still true when doing lighting?
Tekie G yea, I usually say 20% less than the max but same thing
Could you do a video about elephant blocks? Found them on B&H and am curious about what they do.
Stress test the drop ceiling scissor clamp? I feel like I remember you having a recommended weight limit, but it could be an entertaining test!
Cody Jones not a bad idea ☺️
Freezing
I love quasars, I am literally wearing their swamp box shirt right now. There light panels are also really great, and I am insanely stoked for the rgbsMy one word of warning on the tubes is this, if you are trying to do a light gag on and off with them to match a practical, be prepared to do a couple takes and resets. The light sometimes delays when on-offing, and sometimes does not. We had this problem with a dimmer and a hard plug. But!Besides that, you cant beat the quality of light, and the Quino retrofitted six bank system is so sexy cause you can switch color temps without having to swing bulbs out or replace things, as you need to do with the kinos. The quasar rgbs look really great, and I cant wait to do a sidebyside test with the kino selects.
Where do you find the stand that you are using to hold your lights? I jump on the website for those lights and I only have seen the quaisar accessory pin.
The MQ plate from Matthews?
Grip arm bend!!!!!
Did you meter the output?
Also, I have been told on set before NEVER to attach lights to the accessory arm on a c-stand. They told me there is a boom arm for that and I will bend the accessory arm in half. SO, what is the limit for the accessory arm?
Cody Jones the Gobo Arm? I don’t think that person gave good information imo because I see that all the time. And that arm is stronger than most think. In fact, I’ve put an aggressive amount of pressure on an arm and snapped the gobo head and only slightly bent the arm. But you need to understand that I was really cranking on it. I doubt a light with a baby pin receiver could put more force on an arm than I could with my bare hands. I would think that any light that could get close to the force I put on that stand would automatically default to junior stand kind of setup, not a c-stand
Good point! Thanks Dave.
Pft Hahahaha I just realized my little math equation says 32.6 “AMPS”. Welp...damn it. Hahahaha
Always gotta be careful with the units
The ending tho 😂😂😂😂
I have the parts on my desk to build a DIY Quasar tube holder, I just need a little free time to put the video together.
DIYCameraGuy I too will be upgrading my kino flo shells
Dave, your left ear is super red... Anyway, thanks for the great review as always!
Lighting a show with Quasars and Quino's is where the zip cord rat's nests are born. Stress test a LiteMat.
Cardellinis!!!!
Destroy a Blue shape battery, Reach out to John Morgan
Drop anything I just want to see you drop shit
Play soccer with a Lowel DP
Felipe Henao .....heh?
Do they make steel-toe soccer shoes?
In fact I've played with a DP and still works
LOL... Lowels, man...
and it'll still burn.
I want that tubes
