Good gracious!! I live here in Petaluma! If only I had known of this train, I would have come out and documented it on camera. How fortunate I found your video!
@DonGomez007 This train was used to measure the deflection of bridges to make sure that they are safe. No Geometry car. The FRA had already inspected the track and bridges and deamed them to be safe.
@railroadvideoguy Thanks, Mike ...from what I can discern topographically, the areas (in the beginning part of your clip) can be double-tracked to run commuter trains on.
Moving over that set of points (switch). Throw the facing end over, travel across and the trailing end still standing off the stock rail..good locking!
Great to see the NWP back in action again. Could you post a video of the train at trackside? Was this really the first train to go over the line since 1997?
+LordoftheKaty haha, I t hink I rode the MKT down to TX on my way to USAF basic in 1956. European trains, and Japanese are super, even Chinese but here in the midwest we have nothing waah :)
+erdingtown Not always true. Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) is used worldwide on lines where electrification is not justified by economics. The new EPA Tier IV standard diesel engines are quite clean, and diesel engines could use different fuels other than petroleum based diesel. Electrification could always be added later, if justified.
+erdingtown The NWP is not a new railroad. It was constructed in the late 1800s and has been closed and reopened several times in the past 30 years. Now there is a new commuter service using part of the line and that is what is driving this rebuilding. During the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, a couple of the passenger trains that were on the line, ready to pull out of stations at Eureka and Marin fell over off the track and service was out for a couple of weeks.
I hope you make more videos of this line. I love to watch it unfold under my eyes. Thank you !

Thanks for the video. I used to run trains on the NWP. This brought back lots of memories. Thanks 👍❤️
Glad to see some people along the tracks were excited! All the best wishes for the NWP to continue to grow!
Have become a big fan of the Northwestern pacific after having discovered it via the Pentrex DVD.....great clip

The Petaluma Train Depot ! WoW what a change from then to now!.

There is more on youtube just search for it.
The last train was a work train that carried new ties in 2009.
God, you just can't beat the sound of a 567 rev up.
@DonGomez007
The video starts near Caufield lane. The new crossing at Caufield lane is double tracked per SMARTS request.

Ive always wanted to go to the shellville yard and ask if i could ride cab someday. Do you think i should ??
Was this line abandoned
Mike -
Was there a geometry car in this train's consist?
That line has risen from the dead freight and soon passenger service.
yes bring them trains back! !!!!
so if the bridge falls into the river, the bridge fails ?

3:40-4:30 would be considered breaking the rules twice on the RR I work for
Both switches should have been lined to cross over before movement. Is that your point?
Yes, as per rules
Is this for the SMART train?
Ever thought of covering the mike to reduce the damned wind noise.
Can't wait to see SMART in a few years :D
nice video !
Cool! (: Thanks for the video
Well, the bridge didn’t collapse...test successful ....... railhead......🚂🚂🚂
In this day and age, everyone is going electric, worldwide. why build a new railroad using Diesel trains?

Electric is the way to go. Why not? No money for big oil.
