    This is so good, I just got an octatrack 5 days ago, read the whole 140 pages manual as well as Merlin's guide, and I feel like a leaking basket full of sandy bits of knowledge. Your tutorial is really helping patching my basket. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this!

    Great job as usual! One of the hardest things about the Octatrack for me was getting to the point where I didn't panic every time I switch off the power. I found out that you don't need to save the project at the end, you can just save the part. The project will remember your settings automatically. Only time you need to save project is if you want to create a 'restore point'. So recorder buffers, modified sample slots, and parts. That's what you've got to remember to save every time.

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  9 років тому +3

      Yeah. It's good pointing this out. Different things can be saved. But the buffers can never be saved.

    Love this machine only had it for 2 weeks, and it has taken the top spot in my rig. I got along with it right away, not sure why people find it so confusing and hard to use, everything is pretty logical

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  9 років тому +7

      Cool. Yeah I agree. It's really logical. But there are a lot of corners and functions to find and memorise. I guess the average user just wanna sample and play.

    Ordered one, last one left in that webshop, it will be delivered end of the month. They're out of stock at Elektron now. Meanwhile I was looking up some tutorials. And then I found this video by the musical version of Bob-Ross. No pun intended. You video is relaxing, slow, but that gives me time to overthink what you are saying, It's very informative, and it makes me enjoy my Octatrack which I don't have yet.. It made me watch all 45 mins in one. So yeah I subscribed, and I'm definitely going to watch some more. And I'm going to check your website too for the donations. Peace and CU CU!

    Once again Cuckoo, you have saved me from selling this wonderful machine!!! It is not too long, it is perfect! I got stuck with:
    1) How to change the BPM of the sample if the Octa gets it wrong on the CALC BPM FROM SELECTION
    2) I was also trying to put the Hi Hat in a triplet mode but could not find how to change the grid from 16 notes to 8T mode
    However, thanks again, you are the best!

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  8 років тому

      +Matt Gooderson thanks! Good to hear. I like the Octatrack more and more the more I use it.
      If you're in the sample edit mode, the sample has a ATTR page with the ORIGINAL TEMPO attribute. Just change it to change the bpm of the sample.
      Triplets is more difficult. If one track should be all triplets you have to enter funct+edit and set scale mode to Per track. Then for that track set the scale mode to 3/4x in the funct+scale setup page.
      If you just want some trigs to be triplets, either use microtiming (trig+right left) or the RTRG and RTIM playback parameters.

    Cuckoo, two possible topics for your future OT vids once you get your liveset all set up
    1) MIDI - How would you sync your devices to the OT (if you would do such a thing)
    2) Liveset structure for songs/performing - How would you organize and perform with the OT?

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  9 років тому

      +Yeknom0913 Yes. I think MIDI sync is just a matter of finding the right menu options. Send midi clock, and program change if the other machines are Elektron machines, and set the other devices to receive midi clock etc. A live set structure, as well as using the arranger, would be very useful indeed. The arrenger is much more powerful than song mode on the Analog series. Very good
      for preparing live sets.

  • @lying-dalai

    Hey Cuckoo, thank you dear for this tutorial ! There is always something to grab even for a long-time user :)
    One thing though.
    P. 57 of the manual states "The DIR parameters don’t affect the volume of incoming audio when sampling. Even if they are set to 0 sampling is therefore possible. AB/CD DIR are however affected by AB/CD GAIN settings."
    So what you say on 4:24 is wrong ! (ua-cam.com/video/WJT_JoWO2tU/v-deo.htmlm24s)
    DIR is for direct volume, but you can sample quiet sources. I usually set DIR to zero, so I can confirm it works like this.
    It might be a good thing to add a caption that correct it ;)
    Cheers,
    L : D

    • @lying-dalai
      @lying-dalai 9 років тому +1

      +Larc Tald A quoi ? Au tuto de Cuckoo ou à ma remarque ?
      Je disais que le paramètre DIR accessible via le mixeur sert à configurer le volume du monitoring direct des sources extérieures. C'est d'ailleurs ce qu'on utilise pour couper le son des sources extérieures en entrée de l'OT.
      Ce paramètre n'a aucun effet sur le volume des enregistrements. Pour paramétrer le volume des enregistrements, c'est le GAIN qui a un effet (p. 45 : "AB/CD GAIN : These settings affect the volume of incoming audio when sampling")

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  9 років тому

      Hey, that's exactly what I was trying to say, man! Perhaps I was being unclear. Direct monitor at 127 is what is recorded. Setting it to 127 is a good way to hear what is going to be recorded. But it's only the gain setting that is affecting the actual recording volume (and what you hear as well). So yeah. Completely agree. What was I saying?

    • @lying-dalai
      @lying-dalai 9 років тому

      +cuckoomusic You say "that's the level it's recorded" talking about the DIR parameter. Or at least that's what I understood on time 4:24 of the video (ua-cam.com/video/WJT_JoWO2tU/v-deo.htmlm24s)
      As you say GAIN affects the level it's recorded. DIR, not at all.
      :)

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  9 років тому

      +Lying Dalai "That's the level it's recorded, whether the direct is off or on". I was trying to describe that Level 127 is the level that's being recorded. So pushing it to 127 is a way of hearing the level that's going to be recorded, right.. whether it's on or off. But I guess my phrasing is open for misunderstanding for sure. he he.

    • @lying-dalai
      @lying-dalai 9 років тому

      +cuckoomusic OK I get it now ^^ : my sorry mistake ! I think that actually it's your finger indicating DIR that trapped me !
      Well, this precise matter is now sorted, at least :D Please forgive my picky remark.
      And again, thank you dear for taking the time for educating others with your own finding, and succeeding in doing it pedagogically ! You're a positive vibes generator, and the Earth knows it needs it :D

    I got a question... when I am in chromatic mode or slices ( don’t know if that matters)-recording in real time on the Octa, sometimes it records the speed expression of what I just played...other times it doesn’t catch it. It just seems like it quantizes it and misses a few hits. I have gone in the Personalize section and disarm/arm quantization in live recording and it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

    Thanks you for Tutorial #2! I have one question Cuckoo, possibly two. @40:30 you address saving the created pattern. From what I understood you entered the project page and simply saved. After, you mention the user should be able to turn off Octatrack and come back to the project in the same exact way in which you would "perfrom" or continue creating with. Even though I'm a novice at the Octatrack, I was very easily able to understand this directive, however. I followed the exact instructions, switched Oktatrack off/on for a quick test, and essentially the project was gone. I understand that some samples may have been left in the recording buffers, but the save samples where not in their parameter locks anymore either. Did I do something wrong? At this point I haven't tried it again since my project last night was one of my first victories on the Octatrack learning curve. Cheers, Scrutch

    super big thank-you, very helpful in comparison with the included manual, which unfortunately does not describe a proper workflow. Surely you have a good connection to the guys from Elektron. Tell them that they should write a "hands on book" and not just a description of the functions. If you already build such a crazy device, then a good manual with productive tips and tricks should be there .... So thank you again for your very helpful tutorials ;-)

    Thinking about getting the Octatrack and the Korg Minilogue as my first set up. I am having difficulties picking a drum machine. Any ideas?

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  8 років тому +1

      I like the Analog Rytm. But if you're mainly gonna use samples for drums, try the Octatrack for that as well before you buy too much gear. Chances are you could use the Octatrack for both samples and drums. It's quite powerful.

      +cuckoomusic Thank you for answering. I had the same thoughts about using the Octatrack for both samples and percussion. I will give it a shot. I just worry about not having a dedicated beat machine sometimes. Your music is great and your tutorials are very thorough. cannot wait to see more. Excellent!

    how come you didn't set the tracks up as flex tracks? (still aching to follow this tutorial) last day at work tomorrow before Xmas hols then I'm digging into my zoom recorders stack of data cards! 4yrs worth of samples! 😀

      +Matt Smith There you go :) It was a deliberate choice, to show that the recording buffer itself isn't connected to the flex per se. It just sits there on the card waiting to be played at any time.

    Hey Cuckoo I record but the sample does not get saved in the project and set. I can get the record showing but for some reason in MKII it does not actually save the sample recorded into the memory buffer of the Octatrack! Any ideas what I am doing wrong? I will upload a video of this issue.

      Hey, I know Live fairly well. But I stopped using it around 2010... I've been thinking about updating my license, and having a modern go at it. But frankly, with the computer I'm more tempted to work with visuals rather than Ableton Live. It might happen, but no promises..

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  9 років тому

      ***** I have tried it a few times, but not much. I know how powerful it is, but it takes time to learn. The more you know about synthesis, the more sense it makes to use MAX. For visuals I've been using something very similar, called Quartz Composer. It's Apple's own visuals thing for the Mac platform. The future of Quartz Composer is very uncertain though..

    Thank you man! but the whole community is waiting for an easy and clear Octatrack tutorial on PARTS and PATTERNS. The only existing tutorial is just useless. I think that these functions are the heart of the machine and the only way to compose a full track or for variations in a live situation….. otherwise the Octatrack is a beautiful static machine!!!! :-D :))))

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  9 років тому +1

      +piero papini Yeah.. patterns is pretty straight forward to get into. It's in a lot of ways like all the Elektron machines. Parts, however, requires a unique-to-Octatrack mindset. It's not complicated, but I'm scratching my head as of how I should make use of it musically. Basically a part is redirecting the tracks to play different samples. effects and track settings, but with the same Pattern/ triggers. So if you've got a sliced drum loop in one part, and a different sliced drum loop selected in a second part - changing parts will have the track play back the different drum loop if you change parts. This could be cool if you want to pump in variations within the same pattern, but it requires some planning.

    dearest cuckoo.... so I've opened the octatrack bag as they're is Internet at her folks house...... I've followed your tutorial but.... my octatrack won't play back the sounds that I slice?? and then once I've sliced them they disappear from the track.....
    😉😉😉😉

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  8 років тому +1

      Duuude.. There are so many things to take into account, so I don't know how to answer other than point you in different directions. 1. Is this on tracks that you load into it, or stuff you sample into the recording buffer? 2. Recording buffers are temporary. They will disappear when you reload the project. 3. Have you changed the playback of the track to slice mode? Ehum... I should just come over, shouldn't I?

    • @matthewsmith141

      cuckoomusic hahaha matey I love my mpc to bits and can work it in the dark.... but not having the Internet sucks... you're tutorials are amazing.... but a physical human lesson would be ideal... I am currently moving LIFE from one end of the country to the other with my "happy ever after" so Internet other than on my phone isn't a priority.... I have to get my brain around this piece of kit..... I'll try and follow your tutorial again but I have to squeeze it in between real life... maybe this is a perfect new years resolution.... not to be mind raped by the octatrack 🐻🐻🐻🐻🐻 p's a hook up would be good when life isnt so "chewing on tinfoil with a mouthful of fillings" 😉

    Hi Cuckoo, I have an Octatrack and would like to know if you can process audio in real time with the on board fx? I have another synth connected and want to add delay through the Octatrack.. can this be done without sampling? I’ve seen that this can be done on the A4?

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  7 років тому

      +Drum n Bass Bliss yeah sure no problem. You need to make a Thru track on the desired track. Select the desired input and volume. Put a trig on the first note on that track (so that the Thru track “activates”) Then use any affects you want.

    • @shaunmorganuk21
      @shaunmorganuk21 7 років тому

      cuckoomusic Thank you! I was missing the trig activation so was getting no sound :) it now works.

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  7 років тому

      +Drum n Bass Bliss yeah it’s not self explanatory. You can also press the track + play, to play/ open that track manually, free of sequencer.

    Hi cukx. Should I get the Digitakt or the Octatrack??

    • @truecuckoo
      @truecuckoo  7 років тому +1

      +Jo Azaredo I dunno. With the Octatrack I feel like I can prepare a whole gig and do a lot of different things. With the Digitakt I feel like it's much more fun to create beats and cool sample snippet based adventures. I think the Digitakt is cooler for improv and spontaneous build up. But the Octatrack can be an advanced 8 track Loop box, which also is a cool way to live jam. So.. they're totally different.. the Digitakt is definitely the easier one to get going with, if that's important.

      cuckoomusic Thanks cukx. My idea of an Elektron box is to perform live. And the OT gives you so much to work with. The DT is limited and more than a serious fun toy.
      I got my AR only after watching your tutorials as you made it so much easier. .
      Is it too late to buy the OT ??
      My idea of an Elektron box is performance and live !!!
      I am awaiting your detailed tutorials on the DT
