Awesome! I still have my old Weber gas grill from 20+ years ago that's been un-used for over 5 years now, just sitting in the sunroom. I've held on to it because it has the original heavy cast iron grates, which I prefer, that do not come with these modern gas grills. I was gonna do a rebuild of the internals and controls but had the idea of converting it to a charcoal/ wood grill instead. Thanks for the tips.
I did this with my grill and I use a big aluminum roaster pan for the charcoal. I cut a two inch hole on either side of the pan to circulate the air. It seems to be working fine, if I find a good grate to use for the charcoal like you have I will do that. You have a great video and can see that you take pride in keeping it clean, nice.
Thank you so much, I absolutely love cooking for my family and a new bbq just isn’t in the budget. I especially love grilling outside under our canopy tent while the kids play.
I really enjoyed your video. My Weber Spirit (2 burner) is in its 11th year of use and it looks rough, but works well. It won’t be too much longer before I do this conversion. Hopefully, finding the proper size charcoal grate won’t be too tough!
Great video. That grill was well taken care of, excellent candidate for conversion. Are you still using it with charcoal or did you go back to propane? Thanks for sharing. JB
This was awesome! Thank you so much for sharing, our gas barbecue is a bit of a disgrace now. Mostly because the cook surface has eroded away. And become rusty. I think that there’s still a lot of opportunity to salvage the frame. And love the idea of either cooking with charcoal or wood
Not sure why you have to take all that out. Just put in a tray to hold charcoal, remove burners, gas hoses/tank and go. That way you can turn it back into gas.
A friend of mine just gave me a propane BBQ I'm going to do just that to it tomorrow convert it to a charcoal grill. I'm so looking forward to the BBQs I will be having this summer.
There is always something on UA-cam. I’m glad it was helpful. Will definitely check out your channel for some guitar lessons. Happy grilling. Take care…
Definitely not a bad idea. Only thing I would say is how do you control the temp? How do you kill the coal once done. I don't see a way to control or choke off the coals. other than that, it you want a option to use coals and don't mind it tempting up to any degrees and don't mind the coals just dying out completely, then its a great option!
Can you do an update on how the BBQ is going and what further adjustments you might have made? Especially interested in temperature control, do you find that there is too much airflow?
Nice job but as is, you only have half a grill. The other half is an indirect cooker/ warmer. My old grill has a warmer tray in the lid which I plan to utilize for said purpose. Once again, very nice job and I plan to do something similar in the future
Thank you. I was on the verge of selling my Weber gas grill. I thought it would be neat to have my nice gas grill to compliment my husband's charcoal grill. Not my cup of tea, Gas grills don't produce flavor like fire, even using wood chips. I am gonna convert to wood fire. Was it difficult locating the grate big enough for your coal? Also, even if your propane tank was empty, wasn't it risky to leave it in the bottom under hot coals?
You should able to find the grate at home goods stores, tjmax and the like. Also, lots of folks expressed concerns about the propane tank. I appreciate those safety feedback and I removed it many months ago. Thank you as well.
Great video tutorial. I just acquired a Weber Spirit 210 and plan to do the charcoal conversion. It’s not as clean as yours but I still want to do the conversion . What size is the grill grate that you use for the charcoals? Where did you get it? Thanks
The rack for the charcoal is 11.5 inches by 16.5 inches. I purchased it from bed bath and beyond. Might might get it from other home goods stores. Good luck with the conversion!!!😊
I did the same thing w/ mine, my only problem is, I can’t regulate air flow when I close the lid to get a more smoked flavor. If I shut it, it just puts the fire out or if I leave it open & try to open grill the whole time, my coals burn out way too fast.
Do you have to remove the burners? Can the burners stay in and be used as a shelf in case you wanted to move your charcoal or wood higher up closer to your food. I have a old weber grill tgat I've been thinking about converting.
Let me know if leaving the burners would give that flexibility… I prefer having more distance between the charcoals and the food. Good luck on your project. Thanks!
Bro, I would remove the propane tank underneath your grill while you got some hot coals burning on top.. quite dangerous! you don’t want that to explode.
Thanks for checking out the video. The dimension of the rack is 11 1/2 inches by 16 1/2. You can get it in baking section at bed bath and beyond or Walmart or similar home goods stores. Thanks!
Such a good idea! I don't know why more people don't do this. The frame and lid of grill are perfectly find with a lot of older grills.
Thanks!
Awesoem i have an original Weber Genesis from the mid 1980's. The burners are finished but everything else is still perfect. Gonna try this
Remove the gas tank

Thank you this was so helpful. Worried about the fact that you haven’t taken away the gas cylinder? Be careful
Thanks! I removed the propane that same day. Take care...
I can see the propane tank @11:20
Great video! I may consider converting my Weber gas grill to charcoal after watching your video.

Perfect, my gas burner has malfunction and I can't seem to get a replacement anywhere. Im going to do this.
Great video. That grill was well taken care of, excellent candidate for conversion.

Thanks! I’m still using with charcoal.
Thank you very much I was about to throw away mine. Tomorrow I will convert it into a charcoal bbq.
That is awesome!!! 😊

Thanks for the video. Looks great. I'd like to suggest removing those nobs and using that side for some shelf space.
Great idea. Thanks!
do you marinate your short ribs?, BTW remove the propane tank so you dont hurt yourself

Thank you so much for this video. I wasn't sure if it was possible to convert. Your video showed it iis! I really appreciate it!

@@diypotentials That is true. Thank you so much. I will be watching your channel for some more helpful. DIY. You do the same!
what about slow n sear? Is it possible to control temperature accurately or are thee too many leaks ?

How about the gas tank under it might explode due to heat generate by charcoal
Good catch! I removed it immediately after shooting the video. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing this video..
Thanks! Glad you found it useful.
Totally agree it looks so good 👍
Thanks!

I hope that propane tank is empty how hot does it get inside there or is it pretty cool
How do you control airflow and temperature?

Great idea, thanks for posting.
Great job!
Thanks!
Was that a standard oven rack that you used for the charcoal rack?
Yes, that was an oven rack for baking. The measurement is 11.5 inches by 16.5 inches. Thanks!
Awesome! I'm doing this today.
That’s awesome! Enjoy. Thanks!
Great video
Thanks 😊
Thank you 😊

Awesome thanks
Thanks!
Why do you have the gas tank below?
DUDE !!! Your propain tank !!!😮
Thanks for looking out. It was empty and I removed it after the video…
Bro, I would remove the propane tank underneath your grill while you got some hot coals burning on top.. quite dangerous! you don’t want that to explode.
Thanks bro…I took it out a while back. Have a great weekend!
Great idea though.👍
Thank you! 😊
Quick question: what size is the rack? Where did you buy it from?
Thanks for checking out the video. The dimension of the rack is 11 1/2 inches by 16 1/2. You can get it in baking section at bed bath and beyond or Walmart or similar home goods stores. Thanks!
20.8" by 12.8" - do you think it will work?
The length is slightly long to fit my model. It might fit yours. Thanks!
Wouldn't leave that tank under there!
Not sure about burning rust and hot-dogs...
Not good to show demo with a tank gas below!
I wish someone would post a video on how to do just the opposite, convert a charcoal grill into a gas grill cannot find one video
I think that might be a fun DIY project for you to do…
Only problem I see is the 49ers cap Go Cowboys
Thanks! 😂! Good luck Cowboys!
Thank you!
Thanks!
