Thanks, Mike for your thoughtful and inciteful review. Just bought the great album but have yet to hear it. However, I'm sure I'll have the same response as you. Keep up your fine work.
Vinyl doesn't really wear if you play them probably on "decent" equipment, and the cartridge is tracking properly on clean records! But back in the day we really didn't take as much care as we do now, on that I see your point!😊
Yeah I wish I would have done a better job of cleaning and taking care of my albums in my teen years. Some I have been able to make sound acceptable which is good. Thank you.
Did you know that the sacd and vinyl have the same mastering! That means the “naturalness” you hear in the vinyl is only because most vinyl systems color/distorts the sound. Many cartridges unnaturally boost midrange and treble. Also, in order to make the vinyl, you need multiple steps. So on vinyl, you’re really listening to multiple generations off of the master and harmonic distortions that aren’t apart of the master. On cd/sacd, you’re listening to a copy of the master. So if a cd/sacd has the same mastering as the vinyl counterpart, the cd/sacd will always sound better if played on a flat transfer system.
Yes, I am aware of the mastering being the same. I think that playback systems will always have an impact on the sound you hear whichever you are listening to, be it vinyl or SACD. For some people that have invested more on the vinyl playback system than they have on the digital, the vinyl might sound better to them. I understand what you are saying but associated equipment that is being used will always have an impact on the sound. For me and my system the SACD sounds excellent! The vinyl sounds excellent as well and to me better than the SACD. Could be different when I update my digital playback system. Side note, I am purchasing some of the Atlantic 75 series on SACD. The albums that I don't want to pay $60 for but stll want, I am purchasing on SACD. Thank you for your comment.
Hey Mike. Great video! You mentioned at 17:39 that this was remixed by Kevin Gray and I am sure was just a slip of the tongue not to confuse anyone that it was simply remastered (not remixed) from the original stereo analogue master tapes. Not to be confused with Steven Wilson's actual remix remaster of this album back in 2014 and was shortly afterwards released on vinyl. It would be interesting to have a comparison between the Mofi gold CD vs the AP SACD of this. I will do this myself soon when I get my copy.
chad needs to get busy negotiating another anniversary series with another label and do more classic rock prog rock and jazz fusion titles perhaps harvest, track, island, charisma, chrysalis Uk vertigo warner bros, colombia, reprise epic, parlaphone, A&M .... many other possibilities i hope you are working on another label series Chad!

Completely agree!!! I would be tickled as well if they would add the Led Zepplin albums to the Atlantic 75. Thank you!
