Commodore Probert really hit it out of the ballpark with the refit design. Kirk's priceless reaction to the Enterprise in the travel pod summed up my feelings, as well. 🖖😎👍
The refit Enterprise is the first thing I think of when I hear Star Trek or Enterprise. I love the refit so much. It's a major part of my love of Trek as a whole.
The original incarnation of the Enterprise designed by Matt Jeffries was revolutionary, but you can tell it was designed in the 60s. Its proportions aren't quite right, and the nacelle pylons just don't look like they are structurally sound. Andrew Probert refined and perfected the design into something that still looks "right" 40 years later. Let me count the ways: - increased the diameter of the saucer section - reversed the slope of the top of the saucer - bulked out the connecting dorsal section - added the photon torpedo launcher - new deflector dish - reshaped engineering hull into more of a barrel shape - swept-back nacelle pylons - new sleeker nacelles - illumination of the hull liveries I could go on. Perfect ship.
I don't think I've ever noticed how wonderful the refit looks, I much prefer it to the original as the refit manages to pull off the Buck Rogers aesthetic better I feel. Great episode by the way, it would be a great way to go from the OG to the B.
I always loved tos constitution class, but the refit is the best.. a very beautiful design. I do wish it was in tng, like how the excelsior/miranda/oberth was.. but I'm happy the constellation was dreamed up.
The refit to me is the most beautiful ship ever designed for Star Trek. If not the most beautiful thing I've ever loved. Elegant and graceful. To think we almost got that design which would later become the Crossfield class for Discovery.
I remember seeing TMP as a kid seeing it for the first time and over 40 years later this is still the best ship design that Star Trek has ever produced. I like the Enterprise A better as far aesthetics but this will always be the best of the best!
Great episode! I believe it was during this refit that all areas too small for use by ship personnel were required by new Starfleet regulations to be filled with rocks. Several of these areas were directly over the bridge and have for some mysterious reason, perhaps tradition, been copied into all new Starfleet designs. Kirk Forever!!!
This ship is almost perfect. I love more tng era style, but this design with the red uniforms of the time (past the first film), are truly iconic… imagine being a cargo captain, moving from an old cargo ship to an old constitution class… like changing an old horrible car with a still old luxury car… the improvement is massive
🖖😎👍Very cool and very nicely well done and very well executed and informatively explained in every detail way shape and form possibly provided indeed, And the Constitution class starship's have always been one of my favorites designs and the refit design is very beautiful ship all of its own indeed,👌.
I am late to the party but honestly I REALLY love the Refit Connie more than the TOS style. When I first saw the Refit Connie when watching The Motion Picture on VHS when I was a kid (in the 1980's) I was in love with the ship big time. It easily became my favorite Enterprise design. I liked the narrative you created for this story.
Great video as always, The TMP Connie is the better starship and the most beautiful, I will always have a special place in my heart for the TOS Connie.
This IS the Enterprise for me, and it always will be. The refit Constitution is the absolute pinnacle of Star Trek ship design in my opinion. It looks functional while still looking futuristic. It just ticks all the boxes.
Although it never made an on screen appearance, I thought the Phase II refit would’ve been a bridge between the TOS constitution class and TMP refit. Just throwing that out there.
The refit is (in my eyes) the best combination of functionality and beauty of design. With that said, I think we make it smaller than what it really is. The aircraft carrier Enterprise has 25 decks and is 342m long. When put side by side, 1701 is shorter but only by a little bit. At the same time 1701 is taller, the size of the bridge doesn't measure up, or people. Since I was in the Marines, I have seen many carriers up close and I'm telling you, either the 1701 is bigger than what they say or smaller, because the two don't match up.
Ahh love the nostalgia and remembrance while clearly stating that other than Enterprise, these were new Starships which as you said lasted in Starfleet for over a century! Great job!
One of the issues I always had issues with was the problem of the Enterprise (refit) not having any aft weaponry. No aft Phasers nor Torpedo tubes. In Enterprise (show) we learned the fate of the Defiant and saw she was equipped with both aft phaser banks and torpedo tubes. Should those features not have been made standard by the time the Refit came into play?
Although it was never made cannon, according to Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise, there was an aft phaser bank under the shuttle bay doors. If you look closely in the flyover of the Enterprise in TMP, you can see it.
It does have aft phaser emitters both sides of the shuttle bay and at the bottom of the secondary hull. and torpedoes can track a target seen in ST6 same as naval submarines
According to the specs I've seen, there are two phase emitters above the shuttle bay, and four on the bottom of the secondary hull. There is no space around the Enterprise in any direction that does not have a clear view of several phaser emitters.
The 32nd century starfleet series has demonstrated wonderful examples about ship types and spaceports nearby Western coast of starfleet centers. Not only typically as federation starfleet symbols in the 32nd century when onland countries as one Terran civilization to the other galactic civilizations, but has bringing more Sol neighbors to membership constellations.
By contrast to traditional saucer types, this Constitution and Saturn class are fashion to our galactic neighbor ship series. Looking forward to more ship supply chains and ship series.
In my head canon, refit Connies continued to be used through the Cardassian Wars, in which the few still in service were completely replaced by the Excelsior and Ambassador classes
The apex of starship design was the Constitution refit and the Miranda class vessels. Some nice designs came along later but none matched these designs in beauty and structural elegance.
My first exposure to star trek was the star fleet academy computer game, which featured the refit design from the TMP era. My uncle then showed my Wrath of Khan. So for me the refit is the most beautiful of all star trek ships
Thank you for the video I have always loved this design and my favorite. Partly because it reminds me of being a kid renting one of five (then six) movies and watching it multiple times over the weekend.
I think Scotty said it best... "No A, B, C, or D" and in Beta cannon I believe James T Kirk had a part in upgrading the Enterprise, knowing full well of what that starship was capable of and what it could not. I think the convo would have been "Scotty, could you make it better? Aye, Admiral... But could you make it so? You have my word on that." And thus, the only two people who could have pulled off a refit made it so. That's my beta cannon.
Listening to all the improvements, I can think of something the fleet's engineers either overlooked or just couldn't crack: easily-exploding/sparking/smoking bridge consoles. 😀
ben trimble, the engineers did not overlook it. Unfortunately, though, at that the Federation was facing a shortage of rocks to pack into the consoles 😄
While the original connie design had that quintessential 60s scifi feel, I just loved the refit better. It looked like it was ready to run at a moments notice.
It’s hard to remember she was a design from the late 70’s. You can totally see that aesthetic when you familiar with it, but I’m so glad it still stands the test of time. Still my favourite ship design, and pretty much the only good things to come out of the 70’s; other than another space based franchise….some music, and me, of course hahaha Again, love your take Tri; your stuff is always canon in my book 😀
Thank god they made TMP during the era of peak spaceship model work. For me this motion picture era is the only one which looks truly realistic yet aesthetically pleasing.

The real space ship --not made to travel in water like the new ones but space. Having its photon bay open up and see inside in Wrath of Khan was the best sci fi.
lol...not made to travel in water😅this ship is excellent example for interstellar journey. Of course, if some exoplanets such as gliese 581 e f are oceanic planets, this ship can traveling through the water, too.
I used to dislike this design, and considered myself quite a Constitution purist. But after flying the refit in STO because I'm not about to pay for the TOS or Disco version, I kind of fell in love with the refit and now it's considered one of my favorites. It really is a Constitution design worthy of the big screen.
I grew up on the ST TOS and love the Constitution class and it's refit. To me the later classes are just to bulky and cumbersome, except the intrepid class. Thanks for a good and informative video.
Don't get me wrong, I love the refit Enterprise, it looks great. But I will always love the Enterprise-D, although she didn't have enough time on the big screen, she looked fantastic in Generations, and huge as well. Other than that, a great video.
I loved TOS but I was a kid when TMP came out and I fell in love with the refit during the reveal early in the film. I like the Sovereign class too. JJPRISE is junk.

I assume this allowed them to access auxiliary power and the emergency batteries, depending on the situation. I assume many other Constitution Class ships were refitted.
@@Raider0075 No, why would you think that? Just because it's a Constitution Class in the refit style? In fact it makes more sense that it was a new ship, as it's technical issues would follow much better that way!

Although I am more of a TNG-era fan, the Connie refit truly is a timeless design. Absolutely gorgeous.
I agree wholeheartedly.
The Refit Connies are peak Star Trek design, just perfect proportions, perfect colour scheme, perfect shapes, just perfect.
Seeing the refit Lady in the theater back in '79 was an absolute experience to be true and this narrative fits with it superbly.
The TMP Enterprise has been my favorite design, to me it is the design that makes the most sense with the tech shown.

It’s sad that the designers opted to remove the bowling alley from the refit.
They replaced it with a swimming pool.

Such a great job telling this story. I personally always loved both versions of the Constitution class. Both filled their roles so well.
i love the refit design because it is a powerhouse looking ship, which shows it is a ship not to be messed with. Which it proved time and time again.
