In men, hair often begins to recede from the forehead.
    Male-pattern baldness
Women tend to lose hair along the part.
    Female-pattern baldness
Patchy hair loss (alopecia areata) is sometimes preceded by itchy or painful scalp.
    Patchy hair loss (alopecia areata)
Repeated stress on the hair can cause a type of hair loss called traction alopecia.
    Traction alopecia
t's becoming increasingly common for menopausal women to experience frontal fibrosing alopecia, in which the hairline moves back.
    Frontal fibrosing alopecia
Hair loss can appear in many different ways, depending on what's causing it. It can come on suddenly or gradually and affect just your scalp or your whole body.
Signs and symptoms of hair loss may include:
Gradual thinning on top of head. This is the most common type of hair loss, affecting people as they age. In men, hair often begins to recede at the hairline on the forehead. Women typically have a broadening of the part in their hair. An increasingly common hair loss pattern in older women is a receding hairline (frontal fibrosing alopecia).
Circular or patchy bald spots. Some people lose hair in circular or patchy bald spots on the scalp, beard or eyebrows. Your skin may become itchy or painful before the hair falls out.
Sudden loosening of hair. A physical or emotional shock can cause hair to loosen. Handfuls of hair may come out when combing or washing your hair or even after gentle tugging. This type of hair loss usually causes overall hair thinning but is temporary.
Full-body hair loss. Some conditions and medical treatments, such as chemotherapy for cancer, can result in the loss of hair all over your body. The hair usually grows back.
Patches of scaling that spread over the scalp. This is a sign of ringworm. It may be accompanied by broken hair, redness, swelling and, at times, oozing.
    When to see a doctor
See your doctor if you are distressed by persistent hair loss in you or your child and want to pursue treatment. For women who are experiencing a receding hairline (frontal fibrosing alopecia), talk with your doctor about early treatment to avoid significant permanent baldness.
Also talk to your doctor if you notice sudden or patchy hair loss or more than usual hair loss when combing or washing your or your child's hair. Sudden hair loss can signal an underlying medical condition that requires treatment.
People typically lose 50 to 100 hairs a day. This usually isn't noticeable because new hair is growing in at the same time. Hair loss occurs when new hair doesn't replace the hair that has fallen out.

Just had to hop on and say these few words: Unless you are going through hair loss or loss of any part of your God given identity, it is extremely hard to understand some of the feelings Jake describes here, that too very logically. Jake, I will tell you this, my brother, the amount of bravery, transparency, and self-realization it takes to express some of the feelings and in the manner that you have done, is respectable and I encourage our society to embrace that within themselves! Incredible stuff!

But Jake, you have an absolutely AMAZING chest hair. Many bald guys do because the effects of testosterone affect chest hairs in a different way. Judging by your videos I guess you’d rather have hair on your head but try to see the positive side man and please show us more of your chest.

I think you hightlight a very important point that, that even if some people look good with a shaved head/closely cropped hair (as you do), this doesn't matter....as on a personal level we don't feel like ourselves if we look in the mirror and see a man without hair staring back at us. It's not vanity, it's not trying to look young forever, it's a fundamental 'identity' thing....I applaud you on your courage to talk about this kind of thing.

    • @JakeKent
      @JakeKent  4 роки тому +17

Absolutely. That's why this channel is talking about hair systems on the surface (right now) but ultimately, i have a desire to build a brotherhood of men, that understand their identify, and are powerful, healthy, and supported. it's so much more than hair systems.

@@JakeKent Jake, of all your videos this one resonated strongest for me. You are right - it's so much more than hair systems. I am balding, but not to the degree that I'm self-conscious about it. I am not planning to get a hair system. But I am struggling with identity in middle age. The face that stares back at me in the mirror is a hard, unsmiling one, reflecting the trials and tribulations of life. But I need to come to terms with this reflection, and your video has reminded me of that. I take on board the comments about your father. My relationship with my dad was not close either. Thus I'm largely a "self-taught" man. One of my defining experiences was taking care of my father in his old age. It did not draw us closer, and in fact it was downright painful. But real men rise to the occasion for their family. In my reflection I see my father's face as it was on his deathbed, and this disturbs me. I have never wanted to be like him. But the fact is, I am like him. That's what is supposed to happen. In the years since his death I have come to understand him better, forgive him, and cut myself some slack in the process. But still I don't want to give him the satisfaction of looking like him. In your case, the stated objection to looking like your dad is the baldness. Some genetic inheritance ... from a guy you aren't even close to. I think I get it. Part of me wants to tell you to ditch the hair system - the shape of your face would support a short buzz or shaved head. (Some guys look terrible without hair and even a cheap rug improves their look dramatically - their face needs that definition. But you are not one of them). Wearing a system also seems like a lot of trouble in a hot climate, what with your active lifestyle. The itching and the smell would be enough to put me off for good. But I am not you. I can't experience the new passion that is unique to your life, the mirror image that makes you smile, even though having hair has not been transcendent for you. Nevertheless I am sure the renewed confidence is worth every second of maintenance right now. You know what? People can honestly tell you you're a good looking guy (because you are, even without a hair system), but you've got to believe that. Self-image and self-worth are complex things. I think everyone struggles with their attractiveness from time to tome, but it was poignant to hear how ugly you once perceived yourself to be. My question is, why would anyone not be attracted to you? Especially a woman. What I see in your videos is a fit, healthy, good-looking, funny, intelligent, articulate and sensitive man. On this basis, I am certain there are numerous women and men around you who are smitten, only you don't know it. Everyone needs to be loved, but if life has taught me anything it's the importance of loving first, reaching out. And that is indeed what you are doing in your videos. I don't need the hair system stuff but thank you for propelling me in my journey of self-acceptance.

Thank you David, this comment right here is exactly what I feel. I'm 28, and I started losing hair when I was 16. It wasn't extremely noticeable until I was 22-23 due to my different hair styles, shaved it at 23 as a all-ditch effort but... I just didn't recognize myself when I looked in the mirror. I already felt like my youth was robbed by balding and I was constantly worried that people and partners would judge me for being young and balding. I grew my hair out again right after shaving it though, and despite it being thin, I styled the fuck out of it, cut it strategically, used hair fibers, and... I was pretty miserable and never felt attractive but at least I had hair. People knew that my hair was thinning, but not at all HOW thinning. It just looked like I had a bad haircut, because my loss was mostly in the temporal regions, so i could do a weird combover fringe-thing.
It also felt pretty sad having a dad who's almost 55 who seriously has THE straightest hairline i've seen in a man his age.
But about a year ago I got my first hair system and it's been mostly great, I still don't feel 100% like... me when I look in the mirror, I guess, but it doesn't have anything to do with hair anymore. but it's a huge difference in just general confidence and how I feel about myself. I still want to look young, I still am somewhat young and to me it's very important. I don't feel like being bald is "me" at all. It doesn't fit my personality, it doesn't fit who I feel like, and I despise society for telling men to accept life as is and not cover up the "ugly" truth. Appearances matter, maybe not in the deeper sense, but in everyday life things will be different, people will treat you different, and even though it's probably subconsciously, it'll still give you a different experience in life. Maybe i'll do the bald look when i'm old enough to have stopped caring, I doubt that time will come, though.

@@xSebzx Thank you for your message - I can relate to all of this. I bought some clippers as my hair was getting too long at the back and sides, and told myself I was going to shave it all off as the front and top is getting really thin....but then the day came to do it and I looked in the mirror and I realized I wouldn't be happy completely bald. As you say, it wouldn't be 'me'. So I'm gonna have to tackle it somehow. A prominent hair transplant doctor has a great video on UA-cam about this, that wanting hair isn't vanity, it isn't about looking young, it's about looking like 'you'; be that a 30, 40, or 50 year old you.
Here's the video I was referring to; I think you will be able to relate:

Man, thanks for being vulnerable in these videos. I’m a trans man and I inevitably lost my hair because male pattern baldness is X-linked. It’s been so rough dealing with the hair loss because I started with thick, dark hair, and it just started disappearing after transition.

Jake, I relate with you in many ways. Just try to get to the point in your growth and confidence that your are a beautiful and handsome gentleman man, a very great quality to have . I'm so glad you did what you needed to do to make yourself feel better about yourself. I think personally you looked great with your thinning hair and hat and i think you look great with your system. It looks so good and un detected your very handsome. I'm so sorry for all of us guys that we have had to go through this life trying to feel more confident in our selves. Your a very loveable masculine handsome man.. we brothers need to support each other.. I wish I lived closer to you to be in your brother hood support group but I can do it here. Just want to say I love you for being so vulnerable. You are loved and handsome and I love your hair. Just start loving yourself. Your great. I'm John in Mesquite, NV and 73. It's taken me all my life to love myself more each day. I relate with your brother relationship. I had two of those ass holes and still don't like them. One died and I consider the other one dead but he is still walking around on earth,, I don't know why because he is a looser.. I'm better than them and you are too. God bless you and thank you for being you. Also, your a hell of a dancer. Live you man.

You are a handsome man but honestly after seeing this video you look so much younger with hair than without.. the pictures speak for themself. Thanks to you I will always have hair on my head…Keep leading the pack Jake ..you are so appreciated..

I get every word you spoke, and even those you didn’t. As a balding man myself, also one who started shedding when I was 16, I get how hard it is. The tricky truth is, now as a 30 year old man, it still isn’t any easier. I want to get a system done, I’m just really afraid people will think I’m desperate or not confident; which honestly, is actually the truth.

Hello Jake, it takes a strong personal to deal head on (no pun intended) with an emotional dis-ease. Ultimately we have to place value on our happiness. For when our thoughts and emotions are brought together in a negative embodiment we become frozen in time. For most men and some women the loss of self love is often attributed to the loss of hair. I speak from experience. I started losing my hair at the age of 18. By the time age of 30 I had lost all of the hair from my hairline and crown. I am now 53 years old and currently shave my entire head. What i didn’t see , I wouldn’t miss I guess. I applaud you for taking charge of your life and finding your path back to happiness. After watching this video, who knows maybe I’ll find my path back to ME as well. KEEP POSTING VIDEOS.

Hey Jake, first of all, thank you for being so vulnerable and speaking from your heart. I'm 53 and bald and past the thinning stage a long time ago. I get it, some people don't really understand how much our hair means to us. I'm told I look great shaved bald and couldn't see me any other way. My wife met me this way and has no problem with the way I look. But for myself, at times and look in the mirror and really miss having the thick hair I used to have. I agree, being bald or thinning can take away some of your manliness and after all these years I still have my insecurities. Lately, my wife and I have been talking about transplants or hair systems. The hair system I feel is the better option for me. I am a little scared. I consider myself a somewhat confident person but this would be a crazy change. Ya people will say things but some would encourage me; thankfully I have a loving, family, and friend base. How long did it really take you to just jump in with both feet? It is a little struggle for me right now to really jump in. Thank you again for your transparency. we are all in this together.

Hey ray. To be honest, I promised myself a hair transplant for YEARS. I told myself once I got out of all debt, I would treat myself to it.
When the day came, I decided not to fly to turkey to get it done. Instead, a voice told me not to go. I began researching hair systems, and within about a month I had one on. You’re old enough to know that fear won’t leave, unless you take action.

I think that would be really cool Jake. Just like what I assume is the majority of men in our situation, I share a lot of the same feelings and experiences you talked about. (My mom is even a hair stylist too.) However, there are some distinct differences and I would love to share my experience if it can help others. I'm about to turn 24 and I've been shaving my head for what I just realized is 2 years now. I'm so excited to look like the version of myself that I miss so much.

I am young so I want probably at least 65/70% thickness and a solid hair line. Think I'm set on Swiss lace. Would you recommend Curtis and Hair By Mhe? Brother I’ve just started watching your videos because I can so relate, and I’m in the UK! It’s so nice that you can be so honest and genuine with sharing your experience with balding. I’m 20 and I’ve just started seeing my hair thinning so much recently and I share your thoughts on it. I don’t want to take the finasteride drug because of its potential side affects, and I like the sound of a transplant but it’s never permanent, I think the system is the best option.
But brother, thank you, I love your videos and keep it up!

Thanks Michael. I’m trying not to encourage people to wear hair systems. I encourage people to do what they need to do to be more uniquely them. If it’s shaving their head, that’s great! If it’s wearing a hair system, that’s fantastic! If it’s going to the gym more or less, Those might both be the right choice for different people. This is a spiritual journey, and way of living and I’m excited about building a brotherhood that embraces their individual identities, and feels supported in their journey to do so.

@@JakeKent My hair started thinning about 10 years ago. It wasn’t a drastic thinning but one that I could totally tell. I was using hair fibres and hair covering spray to mask it, all the while thinking, “can anyone tell?” I knew they could and felt so self conscious when I watched their eyes travel back and forth up my forehead. And then…you came along and changed all that. I randomly found your vids and started watching and learning. I did my research and for the last month have found a new found “life” within. Most comments are “nice hair” and there is no more odd stares and slanted looks. I feel more confident than ever before and lot of it has to do with you and the stigma you’ve removed from wearing hair systems. I never, in a million years thought about wearing one but now, my thoughts have changed. Thank you for being an advocate and for this channel. Keep doing what you are doing. It is making a difference in so many people. Cheers!!

I have been amazed by your videos. I started thinning when I was 25 and have hated to look at myself for 20 years now. It was not me in the mirror and I so get what you are talking about. Now at 54 I have completed a consultation appointment and I go next week for all the measurements. I had cut my hair to short so I have to give my hair two weeks to grow. SO I am hoping to get my hair system by the end of September. Your videos have been such a HUGE help and answered so many questions I have had once I started thinking about this process. Your videos made me do something about this finally after all these years. Thanks Man! Let's see how this goes.

Jake I really appreciate you making videos about this subject. Men tend to talk about their emotions less and the way we view our appearance as men is included in that. In all my 25 years I have seen people give men shit whenever they care about their appearance too much. As if you have to be female to care about your appearance. If someone wants to do whatever to their body and have their own personal esthetic that makes them feel comfortable in their own skin than so be it! It's nobody's bussiness but their own for how they decide to fix their appearance. So thank you for sharing your journey! You look great any which way btw!

I really wanna thank you for making this video. I completely feel your pain. I started going bald at 20 and at 21 started shaving on a daily basis. My head is super shiny like mr clean shiny. And im the highest norwood level completely bald like next to Dr phil bald. I have been struggling with depression and extreme anxiety when it comes to my balding. I have cried , ive been humiliated in front of guests, friends and family because of it. To the point where I considered harming myself and others because of the total garbage someone made me feel like when using me as a punchline. It really brought me down because it happened contantly on a daily basis. It seemed like people were staring at ur head while talking to them and ive caught people making disgusted looks at me and its obvious theyre thinking look at this ugly bald bastard. Or people just avoid talking to you because they can see ur self conscious about it and dont even bother to treat you as a human being. Its just not a good feeling. Its like when that happens on a daily basis it tends to warp your mind and push you into hopelessness. That being said i like when u said if its affecting ur life that much then do it. Do it so you dont live with regrets in life.

12:00 that was basically it for me .. i have done a lot of good things for a lot of people .. yet when it happened, people seem to generally love making fun of my situation. it was either i get upset with and be called sour for it, or just be a "good sport" and take the jokes, which were honestly damaging me from the inside.
it was hard being the bald joke of town, coming from people you helped a lot. ive drifted away from a lot of people. feeling like ive lost a part of me. it was partly to avoid shame, and being shamed .. and partly because ive felt people have been so superficial about stuff that they only care about physical attributes of other people .. i started caring less about friendship and all .
the truth of the matter is.. success and wealth cant compensate for other things we feel empty inside.. the difficult part about this is, even in a group of successful people, there are still jerks who would point that "youre bald" ..you suddenly feel like your on base one again. as if your life revolves around that issue

I have felt exactly the same as you for the longest time. It's hard to keep trying to cover up your hair loss with fibers and clever styling. I have had so many horrible moment where I've felt exposed and ugly.. at the dentist I left my hair fibers on the headrest of the chair and I felt so embarrassed. I felt so low.. and I knew right then that I was walking home with a huge bald patch on the back of my scalp. I've been covering up for a long time but it's blatant I'm balding..
I tried a hairsystem last year but if was done badly and it knocked my confidence even more.. I am currently rocking a shaved head but I absolutely hate it.. I'm going to be getting another hairsystem as soon as I can.
I feel so ugly, and vulnerable.. I feel your pain mate. It's a shame that people feel so bad about wearing a system, it's a huge stigma for men to want to improve their own personal image, yet we accept women wanting lip fillers and breast implants.. so let's just go for it! I know you wont believe but you did look just fine before the hair system. If someone tells me the same I wouldn't believe either. So my point is...IT IS down to confidence. Hair loss for man is so painful and yet none of us won't admit it. We would rather be alone whole fkn life but not seeking for solution. And even when solution is available we worry how would your friend react to it, will they laugh at you and look at you as some sort of looser. What if your future partner finds it weird and won't like and leave you. WHAT IF, WHAT IF. I guess no matter what path we choose the main thing is to be honest and love you're self. And that's what you did in this video. I'm going thru same you already have gone thru but I won't be suffering for much longer I hope. Thanks for sharing this and I wish you all the best in the future.

Hi Jake, I'd like to thank you for your video. I certainly can relate to everything you said but having a brother LOL. I am in the same stages you were doing the same tings you did, the gel, cut, horrible hat dependency and all that. I also ended up watching videos from those youtubers (probably some watching this too) that try to make us believe everybody will look awesome after shaving their heads, not everybody looks good bald, not everybody wants to grow a beard, not everybody wants to give the wrong image about themselves, being built and looking badass, I personally think they have biggest personality issues than those that decide to wear a hair system or having a hair transplant. As I said I am looking into the different options, one thing I know is that I don't want to be bald, I am married in my 40's and have a daughter, my life is done but I refuse to spend the rest of my life feeling sad when looking at the mirror because I no longer see what I want to see in it. I don't care what others say or think but I do care about not feeling like going anywhere or avoiding the mirror because I don't like what I see. Sorry for the long message. Thank you again! You look 1000 times better by the way!

Thanks Pablo. We are all humans, and we agency, or the ability to act. Fear, however is the main deterrent from us making choices that we ourselves feel we need to do for the betterment of ourselves. Fear can take the form of
      - what others may think
      - fear or failure
      - fear of unmet expectations
And many more. Fear however, does not serve us ( in this context ) fear, helps us, and is purposeful to alert of us of danger. Be brave, courageous, and try to take an outlook of joy, wonder, and experimentation through this process. You’ll find who you truly are in the journey. This is about much more than hair systems. This is a spiritual practice, of listening to your higher self.

I think it looks Awesome man, I'm a singer songwriter, I've used toppik for years.and my hair has always been thin and always worried. You have hit on every single thought and feeling I believe we all men have, yea some would say Hair systems are not for men,but losing your hair is the same as a Woman feels losing her hair.its all about confidence. I've sang in front of alot of people, and wore a hat and I don't wear hats but I did at this gig,and wish I just had hair to be confident about everything ,I'm confident about my music and singing, but losing hair is like a ball and chain you carry from sun up to sun dowm.and I want a hair system, I worked with a guy that had Awesome hair, and one day he finally came into work wearing a hat,and I work in the medical field,he worn a scrub cap,and he took it off and I guess he worried about if people noticed he wore a hair system, for the life of me,I never knew.i could have slipped him ,because he looked better and more confident with the hair system.ni am more light brown headed and I wouldn't know how to even find the right one for me,but my sister mis a hair stylist and I've always thought she could fix my hair system if I did that.im sure she could, until I learned myself to maintain it. Anyway Thanks man, God bless appreciate your videos.

Glad you workout so much so can put this to a good test. What do you think about wearing a system on a surf trip for about a week in the tropics.
