      Can we please have a company that just for once says something like:

      I can't believe that financial investors fall for this crap, it's just nonsense word salad. The fact that they're still funding obvious disasters like this just proves that all these "economics experts" aren't actually smart and were just incredibly lucky one or two times in the past.

    If you think the money saved on salaries is actually going to go into making games noticeably better, you're going to have a nasty surprise in a few years when those games start coming out. Those cost savings are going straight to the C-suite and shareholders. Celebrating portions of budgets getting moved out of dev's salaries is a terrible take.

    Its a bit of a nitpick here, but how much do you expect developers to make. Game devs currently make about half of their non-gamedev compatriot salaries, typically working longer hours and in poorer conditions, what would you then expect a fair wage to be. Its been well reported that blizzard themselves payed workers so little that they couldn't effectively pay for housing in the places that they worked. While we can agree that Washington and California local economies are absolutely fucked for pricing people out, I think there is a position for concern here.
    Considering that the average American worker for labor at the lowest rungs is expecting to make near or around 15/hr or roughly 31k a year, should highly skilled technically proficient workers be expected to make this amount? I make this comparison because the average income for a small dev in Poland is around 32,000 a year. Can we expect American workers to do this highly technical and skilled labor at what amounts to poverty wages to be competitive?
    I am a freelancer, I do art for video games, and I frequently work with outsourcing. Over the last 5 years I have watched the market for my labor essentially dry up because of this constant push for lower and lower wages to the point which I am very nearly better off working these lowest tier jobs, only hastened by the increase in globalization, and while I applaud workers of places such as Spain and Poland for having the ability to do these jobs and not live in poverty, I find it increasingly questionable that I, a fairly low tier employee see my wages fall further and further, or be axed altogether for those cheaper workers.
    I struggle to find it 'good news' that some of the largest gaming employers in the US are slaughtering local workers and studio positions in order to ship those positions to cheaper markets.
    *all values are in dollar, USD amounts*

      Few places outside the US have the number of talented entrepreneurs within a liberal economic environment that allows them to innovate and execute but individual talent is all over. In other words, if you are not networking and synergising, your job is at risk of outsourcing. If you want to stay in the career, either expatriate to a middle-class life in a middle-income country, or make your own brand through a copyrighted narrative.

    • @PhotonBeast
      @PhotonBeast 4 місяці тому +3

      As a fellow dev, I'm with you there. The shifting of game dev labour to outside the US/to cheaper places doesn't really solve anything in the long run, at least not for the devs. It really just reduces costs for the studios and allows them to shift more revenue upwards. Earning 70k euros and getting a 36k bonus off a billion USD seller is still less than the cost of a US dev who would command a 150k salary et al; so more of that 1b is going upwards.. And proportionally speaking, devs are probably still spending 50%+ of their salary just on rent due to the cost of living of the cities they're based... or they're living hours out from the studio. While I would absolutely love to see more game development happen in more places, having it happen at the expense of other places isn't it.

      I mean, what you’ve raised is less of an issue with the gaming industry and more specifically an issue of economics and housing market.
      Cost of living is going up, not just in the US, and if companies can pay someone in Europe a “good wage” by local standards that would be less suitable to someone trying to live in the area of one of their US offices that’s good business sense on their part assuming the quality of employee is equal.
      As for the employee, they get a good wage for where they are, the only person losing is the person living where prices are too high to live on that low of a wage, which sucks for them if they want to be a game dev.
      The reality of it though is that companies don’t “owe” a job to people in specific countries, so it not being viable to be a game dev in the US due to living costs there is not a game industry issue.

    The trouble with California is the same problem all across North America and Western Europe. The combination of a bustling creative economy along with rampant housing speculation (thanks in large part or Air B&B), wealth inequality, a commission-based real estate lobby, hostile homeowners pushing against any and all attempts to add density to the region in response to housing shortages, and developers attempting to cash in on building "luxury" homes in these high-value areas have driven rents and home prices into the stratosphere. Even "affordable" areas in the US still rely on Los Angeles incomes to afford Louisiana homes.

      @@MudakTheMultiplier you’re not wrong videos on UA-cam can be quite loud. That said I had the opposite problem with this video. I had Chrome and UA-cam maxed out but at the same time I’m also using an audio mixer to make it so that even a super loud video doesn’t blow out my ears anymore, had it happen one too many times.
      That said the issue is down to the normalisation, or lack of it, used on videos by different creators. DaVinci Resolve for example has a default for UA-cam you can use that adjusts to a -1dB (if I remember right) and if everyone was using the same or at least similar normalisation that would fix things being too loud or quiet as everything would be around the same loudness so you just dial in what is good for you and that’s it.

      @@MudakTheMultiplier It's easier to control the volume on the user's end if it's more on the louder side than too quiet. If it's loud you can always turn it down to a comfortable volume, but I unfortunately know from experience that if it's too quiet you can only turn up the volume so far before looking into external programs to raise the volume further. One of my old headphones played everything at roughly -20db than normal with everything at 100% even for the loudest videos I generally watch. Had to invest in apps like voicemeter to raise it by an additional 125-150% volume just to hear properly, even higher for quieter videos

    • @MudakTheMultiplier
      @MudakTheMultiplier 4 місяці тому +3

      @@river559 It's the same difficulty on both ends because most systems will have very little adjustment at the bottom end. When volume setting 2 is double volume setting 1 and I need a 1.3 then I'm just out of luck. On PC I'm fine because I have a small physical mixer. On mobile there aren't apps that I have been able to find that give you better control over the bottom end of your sound, just boost it higher and usually break your headphones in the process.
      To be clear, the volume on this video is exactly where I would like it, and I wanted to make sure that my opinion was heard, but that doesn't mean the original point OP made was invalid or anything.

They can open a dozen studios in Eastern Europe with those same funds. This isn't just California, it is almost anywhere in the US. Austin and Seattle are just as bad, as is Boston/New York. The problem is game pass doesn't work. It's not profitable and it trains your consumer base to not purchase games. Sadly rather than acknowledge that and adjust the plan a little, Xbox's upper management lied about it, swept the concern and criticism under the rug, and just pushed on ahead with the plan. Which was fine, Xbox was literally pennies in the MS ledger. Until they spent 76.5 BILLION dollars to aquire Zenimax and ABK. They're no longer pennies in the ledger, they're now a huge fucking chasm that needs to fill itself back in and then some. Except game pass isn't profitable and MS proper isn't playing games. You don't become the literally largest company in the history of the planet by fucking around with a 76 billion dollar investment. Xbox upper management has been incompetent for years, and i think its clear MS proper came in and took away control. Now we're gonna get corpo Xbox. They created a self defeating prophecy because they can't NOT put big games on the pass like cod because they literally made that a selling point. The act of not is a backlash they would rightfully deserve. While they need cod to sell, or else they will further dry up their revenue even worse.
      I wish CEOs would take more hits than their employees for cresting these problems. But something you hit on is what I agree with too. Firing Phil won't fix anything because most likely, all of this started when Microsoft spent absurd amounts of money for no return. This whole system is screwed and the lie of good games to distract the gaming populace isn't even there for Xbox crowd to keep them from asking questions.

If corporations move these jobs to cut salary costs, that money 'saved' on paper is not going to make the game any better, nor save the employees from horrid working conditions or the inevitable time crunch. I'm dead serious by the way. This is what I'm doing. There's no game companies where I live here in Texas so I'm making my own. Unreal Engine has the best tools for solo devs. Mix that with tutorials from Gorka, Code Cobra and Royal Skies you would be surprised what you can do. Royal is by far the best of the three, short sweet to the point and he will cure your lack of confidence, he's why I don't feel so incompetent. I know there's a video here on UA-cam that will teach you how to make a basic platformer in 1 hour. Expand from there.
      And as a little side note. This guy named Rusty put out a video on how to mod Elden Ring and other from soft games and that has been surprisingly helpful. The concept is known as bullet editing. Once you start seeing the art in this you will start understanding the part of programming that IS art in utility.

    thing is California has massive infrastructure on top of the insane supply and demand effect of being 'in town' at the fromer center of culture and innovation. One would think turning a desert into a agriculture and population center would be a bit inefficient. I live in the state to the north were spillover of that demand has driven everything up here too. Infrastructure differences are night and day. My state is ran like a colonial fiefdom than a modern state. So it's about picking your poison. In this state's capital we can't even afford paved roads. My friend from california told me they would rip up and replace brand new roads if there was a slight mistake in planning. Here its a patchwork that gets more dysfunctional as the population rises. That said a lot of movies and shows are made in canada now for a reason.

    I honestly think Roll7 lost the plot after OlliOlli 2. That game was so much more refined with a cooler style. The 2.5D perspective overcomplicated the environmental readability and put too much emphasis on navigation over the core gameplay concept of running tricks and maintaining momentum. The Cal Arts aesthetic and tone completely neutered the cool factor. The first world was reduced to a handholding tutorial that got in the way of the simple, arcade style appeal. The character creator aspects just felt like checkbox stuff thrown in for mass appeal. Even the music was a big step backwards from esoteric, modern Thundercat style funk and diegetic chill that was perfectly cohesive with their impressive irl sound capturing, into more generic modern retro stylings.
    Maybe pressure was put on them by the publisher to go "AA" over 2D indie style... maybe it's where they wanted to go. I don't know, but they lost me as a big fan of OlliOlli.

Great chance that most folks from these closed studios have been relocated to another studio. If 2 studios were making similar games, it's makes sense to close the studio and integrate the teams. But at the end, it's Microsoft business. You suppose to just enjoy the games or not.
