      I thought wooden would be better for me so i Tried so so many different wooden and hollow ones. At the end i choose Lingting 17 Key flat Board kalimba but that is one year ago. Now i dont know why i did Not choose an acrylic one, they Sound way better than all the hollow kalimbas i Tried and cost maybe 5€ more than the cheapest hollow kalimba on amazon. And the Keys of the lingting are too Close together that i Made Always mistakes while playing and that frustrated me very hard Last year. Now i Play an acrylic one from treelf and the 34 Key kalimba from chill Angels and my playing is way better now.

    When I practice I like using an acrylic, but when I perform I like using a hollow body electric/acoustic. I think intended use is also important. Are you going to be performing with an accompaniment? Then you're going to need more volume. Hollow body's also allow for a vibrato effect that can't be done with solid wood or acrylic. When I'm just sitting with my cats with a beer at night and I'm playing a bit to relax, an acrylic is a great choice. It has a warm lullaby like sound that a howw body can't produce. The amount of keys is also important. I use a 42 key most of the time, but they are very expensive and usually have to be custom made. I would suggest an 8 key for a small child to learn, or a 17 key if you're an adult. There's no sense in spending money for top of the line stuff until you've mastered everything before it. You need to crawl before you can walk. Also there's plenty of different designs so get one that speaks to you. I have about 25 kalimbas so far and each of them says something about me design wise.

    • @rachelcookie321
      @rachelcookie321 2 роки тому

      When do you perform with your kalimba? It seems most people just use them at home for fun. I tried searching if there was any professional kalimba players and I couldn’t find anything. The kalimba seems like it’s more suited as just a hobby since it’s a small instrument and it’s very quiet so can’t be used in a band and it’s not in high demand for music since it’s relatively unknown. I’m curious to hear about someone who does actually perform with it.

    Thank you for this great and informative video. I'm currently looking for a kalimba which I can use in soundtrack compositions together with orchestral textures and synthesizers and your video helped me a lot with my research. Hollowed ones might not be the best choice since the frequencies are quite unbalanced. I love the sound texture of both the acrylic ones with their clicky, high frequenced sound and the wooden ones with their full and rounded resonance. Maybe in the end I'll get both for some variation depending on the composition's mood.

    Are the tines the same materials for each kind of kalimba shown here? 🤔
    It seems they are very important for producing the sound that we hear. 👂

    Hello!
    So first of all, I am really sorry for my bad english!
    I bought an acrylic Kalimba( The Kimi one) yesterday as my first Kalimba. Should I send it back, or do you think I can learn it, starting with an acrylic one?
    I also would love to practise in my garden or in the park alone. Is that possible or is the Kalimba to quit to hear it outside?
    I am so exited to try and learn this beautiful Instrument.

    As a beginner who got obsessed with the kalimba ever since I laid my eyes on it, the acrylic and flatboard kalimba sound soo similar! My parents said they would buy me one, and I'm so definitely going to chose an acrylic OR flatboard kalimba! Is there a store that sells kalimba's?

    Is the acrylic a little more heavier then the flatboard, or is does it weigh like a boulder?
    Edit: I'm still deciding, a pretty heavy acrylic, or a a little less pretty, lighter flatboard :

      While momma Robin is away, let me also share my experience on this. I tried to put a lot of stickers on my tines and it affects the sound.. so dont put too much... now i only have the notation stickers on my kalimba tines. Putting stickers on the body is perfectly fine.

    Are the dots made to prevent scratches?
    And can you use any regular hammer or tool to tune your kalimba? Please answer c:

    • @Shaesi.
      @Shaesi. 3 роки тому

      Yes, the dots that you can place on the bottom of the acrylic kalimbas are there to prevent scratches when you place it on a surface. You can use any tool to tune your kalimba, as long as it moves the tine up or down. However, a regular hammer would be too big to hit only one tine, but you could hit them with a spoon, some scissors or similar items.

    • @TipsKalimba
      @TipsKalimba  3 роки тому

      That's the challenging part. If the tine is somehow flexible, what i did was press it higher or lower. Though if the tine material is quite hard, i would pull it out and fix it before reattaching it. ( I had a kalimba with hard tines and i lifted it up, what happened was the grip on the tine became loose. So it really depends on the tine material.)

    I am from Germany and i would Always prefer the acrylic kalimbas. You can buy many many cheap hollow kalimbas in Amazon Germany but i Tried more the ten of Them and the Sound of all of Them is Not so nice than of the cheapest acrylic kalimba. So ni Matter which acrylic you choose, it Sounds Always better than cheap to expensive hollow kalimbas.

      I agree. The hollow kalimba can be very tricky. Because if it's not a high quality model, it does have issues. The hugh Tracey is good though. :)

    Aaaaa esta decisión es tán difícil. Por un lado desde la primera vez que ví un kalimba supe que quería uno acrilico, se ve tan delicado y lindo además suena como una caja musical y yo soy fan de las cajas musicales, pero... el sonido del de madera es tan precioso parece como si fuera un instrumento sacado de un cuento de hadas de la naturaleza y el de madera hueca no se queda atrás, tiene un diseño y sonido más "calido y hogareño" perfecto para practicarlo en un día frío junto a una chimenea, no sé pero yo me siento en mi lugar feliz cuando escucho el kalimba de madera hueca
