  • Thank you very much for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video! Here’s my summary of the night’s events below:
Two teams who had contrasting play off stories at the end of last season met in the First Round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
Sheffield Wednesday, who had an unbelievable last minute winner against Barnsley to earn promotion back to the Championship after 2 seasons away. And Stockport County, who lost on penalties to Carlisle United at Wembley and missed out on promotion.
At the weekend, both teams lost their opening games of the season. With The Owls losing to a stoppage time winner by Che Adams for Southampton on Friday night, and County losing to a late goal at home to a revived Gillingham side after their recent takeover earlier in the year.
On the night, Wednesday dominated the ball in the early stages and attempted to create some chances with a lack of end product. Stockport started to come into the game and took the lead after a brilliant flexible goal by Paddy Madden in the 16th minute of the match. Could the League 2 side put a real shock on in South Yorkshire?
Predictably, the home fans were not impressed by the first half antics by their side and demanded a response going into the second half. They took a bit of time to get a comfortable grasp on the game again and, towards the end of the game, really started to hound the County penalty area.
The lucrative goal was looking unlikely until a sluggish stoppage time equaliser from Tyreeq Bakinson broke Stockport hearts in the 7th minute of injury time and sent the game into penalty kicks.
Josh Windass opened the scoring in the shootout which was followed by goal scorer Madden having his saved by goalkeeper Vasquez. 3 successful penalties for either side followed until Stockport’s Louie Barry had his penalty saved. This left Lee Gregory to slot and ensure Wednesday’s place in Round 2.
Not a spectacular performance by Xisco’s Munoz side. In fact I was particularly disappointed with their play throughout the game to a lower league side. However, they did get the win which is all that counts. Also, fair play to Stockport for the effort they put in and were very close to getting the result.
