  • A League Two clash in Wiltshire as Swindon Town took on league leaders Stockport County at The County Ground.
Things are starting to look very hairy for Michael Flynn’s Robins with just 1 win in their last 7 in the league. On top of that, an unbelievable 7-4 thrashing at home to National League Aldershot Town (a match where they were 7-0 down at one point) in the opening round of the FA Cup, last weekend.
They’ll face a stern test against Stockport County who have remarkably won their last 10 in a row in the league, which is an incredible turnaround from just 5 points from their opening 6 league matches. A result today from the Robins could really kick start their season.
On the day then, and overall it was a great match for League Two standards. Both sides firmly going for the match, from the early stages you could tell it wouldn’t be smooth sailing for The Hatters. And on the half hour, in the blink of an eye, Dan Kemp’s deflected shot went into the top left corner of the net and Swindon led 1-0. Which is how it stayed going into the interval.
By Stockport’s recent high standards, the opening 45 would have been slightly disappointing. However, they did come out of the blocks flying and got a penalty just over 5 minutes into the second half. A beautiful ball in behind by Kyle Wootton, led to the Swindon keeper rushing out to meet Macauley Southam who caught him after the ball was played. Will Collar stepped up to score and Stockport were level.
This didn’t deter The Robins, as just 10 minutes Jake Young cooly twisted in the box and scored at Ben Hinchliffe near post, a great goal after some good pressure from the Robins. Also second assist of the match for Saidou Khan.
So the question was, do the league leaders have the character to come back with 30 minutes to play? Well the answer was yes as Kyle Wootton sneaked in front of Tom Brewitt to make it 2-2 on 69 minutes, a lovely cross from Ibou Touray on the left wing. The momentum had fully switched in the game as just 4 minutes later, Wootton layed the ball off to Odin Bailey on the edge of the area and he curled the goal of the day into the top right on the goal. For the first time, Stockport led going into the final stanza of the match.
The Robins huffed and puffed to get back into the match but unfortunately they were just lacking the critical impact at this late stage. And as the Swindon defenders rushed to meet Ryan Crossdale on the edge of the area, a pass through found Callum Camps, who was given the freedom of Wiltshire in the box, he slotted slightly sheepishly into the near post and he wrapped up the contest on 89 minutes.
4-2 was how it finished then with the away end jubilant after their comeback win to make it 11 wins in a row and they are sitting pretty in 1st position. For Swindon, they’re still in a sticky patch and will feel slightly disappointed that they couldn’t muster anything from the match.
