Elland Road: Leeds United v Shrewsbury Town (Wednesday 9th August 2023)

On Wednesday night, Shrewsbury Town were looking to cause an upset against recently relegated Leeds United in the First Round of the Carabao Cup.
Leeds came into the match after a dramatic late comeback at home to Cardiff City on Sunday as Crysencio Summerville scored in the 95th minute to make the score 2-2 after Leeds fell 2 goals behind before half time.
For The Shrews, they got their League 1 campaign off to a winning start. Ryan Bowman with the only goal as they beat Cheltenham Town 1-0 on Saturday.
The big talking point going into the game was the situation involving promising forward Wilfried Gnonto. The Italian international filing in a transfer request amidst rumours of him signing for Everton. He was not involved in the squad for the match.
Leeds started on the front foot and aimed to make chances early doors. Slightly against the run of play Shrewsbury opened the scoring with a magnificent hit from Tayler Perry. Leeds didn’t let the setback hit them and continued to press for a goal. No real clear cut chances were made at The Shrews led 1-0 at the break.
The hosts made a couple of changes at the break and it was one of the subs that made the impact early in the 2nd half. But firstly, it was Joe Gelhardt that finished off a scruffy piece of play in the Shrewsbury third and Leeds were back on level terms. Substitute Pascal Struijk then scored from a corner as Leeds turned the tie around.
Leeds continued to look for more and there wasn’t an awful lot of chances for Shrewsbury to get back into the tie as Leeds progressed to the 2nd round.
I did enjoy watching this Leeds side under new boss Daniel Farke, they were composed and fluent on the ball, especially in the 2nd half they attacked with such energy and were always looking to create chances. I believe he is one of the top men Leeds could have appointed as they will aim to bounce back into the Premier League.
