3:07 "Can you get crabs in Florida?" I'm willing to bet a few sailors have had that experience XD
I had forgotten that Alliser Thorne didn't even train the new recruits, just bullied them. What a tool. Thanks for posting OGH
"It's already been 8000 years" I love Mary Ellen so much.
aww thank you !!
Tyrion like jon was safer at the wall considering cat would bring ruin to them both. Another Bonding experience for them.
But I'm enjoying my reread Seeing Tyrion early on to how he changes up to dance slowly becoming the very monster they feared and even before doing horrible things that he gets away with as we liked him.
But I'm excited for the war of the 5 kings section as it has a lot of good moments that get missed by a majority of the community and going through it slowly will be an experience
“Most of my kin are bastards," he said with a wry smile, "but you're the first I've had to friend.” I just realized that Tyrion straight up said it. I think he meant it both figuratively and literally
One of the single greatest tragedies of this series is the fact that Maester Aemon and Daenerys will never get to meet. I picture those two having the sweetest relationship😊. Also, I would've liked to see if Aemon could help her w/the dragons, what sort of knowledge he had about them in general, etc.
Aemon's death is the first time that a death in the books actually hit me. And "Egg, I dreamed that I was old." is just so haunting.
It still blows my mind he is Aegon the fifths OLDER brother. That’s was like 4 Kings ago lol....He has to be the oldest man alive in Westeros the last few years of his life....
@@KingOfWinter I think of the many reasons he is in the story is to remind us that the core story that we are reading began long ago. That Fire and Blood, as well as the Dunk and Egg stories aren't just world building, but an integral part of the series.
I’ve always thought of myself as an independent thinker and capable of analysis…… but…. listening to you two break down these chapters has me hooked. I’ve missed heaps of this stuff on my own!
If Benjen Stark went with Royce, he would be leading the party for sure. "Two of the best" refers to, like, two best rangers, who aren't officers, I would guess.
BenJen is like an officer. Royce wanted to lead so Mormont send his two best lower ranking rangers with him. I’m sure he considers Benjen the best but if he would’ve sent BenJen with him then it would’ve been BenJen who was leading the raiding party which the whole point was for Royce to lead.... I’m sure Royce wouldn’t see it as a slight to be under BenJens command considering how loved Ned is in the Eyrie
Benjen Stark being First Ranger may tie into Mormont doing things to stay in good favor with Lords.
Did Benjen *deserve* to be First Ranger???... 🤷
After all the crap Benjen gave Jon this would be gold
I’m so excited to keep listening to the rest of your conversations about the book chapters. Don’t ever stop, so good!
Looks like they stopped, lol.
Just love doing each chapter with you two, thank you for being so rad and keeping up with content xoxo
I love the theory about the wall being a red herring and the white walkers aren’t going to attack or even be at the wall in the book. Instead they’ve been using these years to build their giant army and when they attack they will come out of the ocean/sea. Attacking all the coastal castle almost simultaneously wiping out Westeros in a single blow. I don’t think it will happen but if it did it would blow my mind lol
The Wall is a 100% a red herring, I don't know about the rest but that would be cool as well, I'm not even sure the Others will attack Westeros at all, I think they just want one person.
But theyd already have the army if that was the case. There are endless dead bodies in the oceans.
Challenging someone to a sword dual is basically the real life equivalent of a beta asking for a push up competition to feed thier own ego.
You have tarnished my honor. I demand a shirtless duel with foam noodles!
Duel*
Their*
No I disagree, it's lame when you're like 50 and challenging a dwarf however.
@@frankl3518 that's litteraly just ego when losing an argument with someone and trying to find a way to "win" at something.
@@ivanbluecool the same can be said about someone running their mouth because they know they couldn't win a fight.
"The noble man is chiefly concerned with wisdom and friendship; of these, the former is a mortal good, the latter an immortal one."- Epicurus
I think this quote describes Tyrion's & Jon's relationship perfectly
Epicurus Of Samos is my favorite philosopher, really chill guy.
@@marcusanark2541 same here!
Maester aemon shows his fairness throughout the series, he shows kindness to jon,and tyrion both from families who over threw his family dynasty, and he shows dismay for Thorne a guy who fought for his family in the rebellion...aemon would have made a great king if he would have accepted the crown..
These videos have become how I know that today is Monday. They literally always surprise me when they show up in my feed, and I go "What!? It's Monday!? Yay!"
I loved the message Jon tried to have Tyrion send to Robb. I laughed pretty hard at that, and I would've liked to see more of Jon and Robb's relationship before the story moved on from Winterfell. Tyrion was like no I'm not sending a message that could get me killed, lmao!
When Tyrion gets to the top of the Wall he has to choose between walking east or west. What do you think is the symbolic significance, if any, of Tyrion going west? And then of finding Jon there? Especially considering his trajectory in ADWD is east?
Alliser Thorne is one of those characters whose behavior will hit somewhat differently after the story ends. That's all I will say about Alliser.
There's a description of an endless process of gravel being placed on top of the Wall to make it safer to walk. The ice swallows it and they have to place more. I thought it was a cool mundane explanation for how the Wall might have grown over the centuries. It seems to counter balance the magical explanations implied in Jon's personified observations of the Wall seeming to grow on some days, to weep and shrink on other days.
@The Order of the Green Hand you can get crabs in Florida. This is about the time for the Blue Crab Festival in my home town of Palatka. I know it's in May but the exact dates elude me right now.
I don't know if anyone will see this but i just discoverde that Tyrion is the name of a reddish shade of purple worn by royalty in greek and roman times George told us his parentage with his name Tyrion Targaryan confirmed apolagies if you guys already knew this but it got me excited.
It's amazing how you guys get almost all of your subscribers to like your videos.. that's great!! U guys deserve it!!
Love going over these early chapters of the series, its interesting how far things have come
“None taken, Ser Jaremy. My father is very fond of spiked heads, especially those of people who have annoyed him in some fashion. And a face as noble as yours, well, no doubt he saw you decorating the city wall above the King’s Gate. I think you would have looked very striking up there.”
Thank you for what you both do
When Mormont is saying that Garret and Wil are his best rangers, I think he's referring to rangers who aren't leaders. Benjen is First Ranger, you can't have some new lordling lead Benjen on an expedition. You really can't do that with any ranger who has led a successful expedition. So Garret and Wil being the best men makes sense when you think about who he would have to exclude. He sends two very experienced men with Waymar, but not two who would be unaccustomed to following orders on an expedition.
Ser Alliser stood up, his mouth a thin line. “Come and make your japes with steel in your hand.”
Tyrion looked pointedly at his right hand. “Why, I have steel in my hand, Ser Alliser, although it appears to be a crab fork. Shall we duel?” He hopped up on his chair and began poking at Thorne’s chest with the tiny fork. Roars of laughter filled the tower room. Bits of crab flew from the Lord Commander’s mouth as he began to gasp and choke. Even his raven joined in, cawing loudly from above the window. “Duel! Duel! Duel!”
I just looked at a map of the North...... Why the actual hell did Bran the Builder and everyone just stop building the wall. Like maybe the white walkers can't move past that imaginary line but that kind of design flaw is crazy. Why the hell didn't mance throw about 400 people at castle black and then overtake the shadow tower/ empty forest on the left. Especially with the skin changers he had available for scouting.... Who is planning these attacks lol
Plot convenience
Finally have free time to listen to this! Very excited.
I always interpreted mormont at the wall as he voluntarily left after jorah dishonored his house
I always thought it was because his family had $$$ problems, given Jorah's wife's taste for the finer things in life...so Jeor gave it all to Jorah earlier, taking the Black instead of waiting until it all came to Jorah eau naturale. But that doesn't make much sense now that I'm typing it out. But that's what I always thought.
In Eddard 2 we find out Jorah was in exile for five years, and pretty sure his father has been at the wall for longer than that?
Another possible reason for a long period with no activity from the others, is that the population beyond the wall is relatively small compared to the south.
Perhaps they simply needed enough corpses in the ground to form an overwhelmingly large force.
A long period with short winters means the wildling population was probably as large as it had ever been too.
Maybe they needed a long winter to coincidentally line up with a period of time where a great many whights could be mustered?
Maybe Craster enables them to make their move. Perhaps in all those 8000 years Craster is the only person to participate in the ritual sacrifice needed to make more others.
I'm going to assume that aemon calling tyrion a giant at the end of the world is foreshadowing tyrion's targaryen villain arc and eventual ice dragon cameo
It does seem to be a Northern thing where the Older men do leave their families during hard times so that it is easier for them to survive. The whole announcing that they are going hunting thing and everyone knows they wont becoming back. I always thought that Joer was just and older man and wanted his son to be a Lord so he joined the Nights Watch. Im not so sure about that now. why does George have to be so fucking vague about everything… So much of what I think about this story is speculation. I want to know the truth George…The man is so good at hiding the truth right in front of you.
I don't mind all the mystery, if he would finish. It's like reading an Agatha Christie mystery and waiting 15 years for the last chapters.
@@AMAubert I'd be very surprised if he finishes the series, ever.
@@ms.doomer5623 I don't think he would keep reminding us about Winds, etc., if it was a project he didn't intend to finish. After the show went south and the relationship grew tenuous between him and D & D, he may have thought it prudent to a) let the show wrap up, b) allow consumer reactions run their course and gauge them, c) create some distance between himself and the show via time (said to aid in the healing of cuts and bruises), and d) proceed accordingly. Were I in his shoes after things began to go south with D & D, I wouldn't have given those two my next book so they could mutilate my story and/or completely ignore it anyhow. Personally, I know that I may *not* have purchased and read the books if the show already gave me the true ending. I like to think I still would have, but I don't know. What I DO know is that, after I learned the books weren't finished and that the show had veered of the tracks from the books and provided us with its own (anti-climatically disappointing) ending -- and learning that the books would take me in a different direction -- I bought them right away and am now almost finished with my second reading of the works. I may not have done that. GOT is now a few years wrapped-up, which provided time and distance for GRRM, and House of the Dragon is now coming; from a marketing perspective, timing the release of his next book as he is -- on the heels of House of the Dragon -- he's going to SELL BOOKS and likely sow a new crop of readers. He'll breed more readers releasing Winds next year than he would have if he released it in 2018 or something, as the show was crash-landing all around us. Sh*t happens and he's getting up there in age, Valar Morghulis, but I'm hoping for the best. Yes, we've met with a frustrating delay as we await the release of Winds, but that shouldn't give us leave to be He strikes me as a hard worker who VERY MUCH loves this story and world he created. He's not going to unveil the next piece until the time is right.
I wish we had more Tyrion at the wall
Nah
You guys in Florida have excellent crab. It's called Stone Crab it has a giant claw (the claw actually grows back) that is light orange with a black tip. It is sapposed to taste amazing. It tastes like A mix between shrimp and lobster. Been dying to try it for years.
When the temperature drops and glaciers form, sea levels get lower and shorelines get broader. Eastwatch's coastline will extend much further out. Look at the ice age maps.
Any time things don't make sense in these books, I can almost hear George snickering. And Thorne as master-at-arms make no sense whatsoever. I wonder if his true role might be that of master-of whispers. If a good man can serve a bad cause, could a bad man serve a good cause?
Does Aemon somehow sense dragon blood in Tyrion?
How many villain origin stories begin with a friendship between the villain and the hero?
Thanks Dave and Mary Ellen
As to the water; that may be because, aside from the Manderlys, the North does not show much interest in the water so they may have failed to consider it.
Mayhaps tis the magic in the wall that prevents the others from crossing it. For some reason I always mistake the show with the books, but I do believe Cold hands couldn't pass the wall as well as Ben in the show. Maybe the gaps in the wall are there so that wildlings and other living people who were left beyond the wall or chose to stay there could come back should the need arise
I think the Wall is more of a "magic jammer" than the physical barrier. It is kinda useful as a physical barrier against the Wildlings as well, but looks like its main function is to separate "northern magic" and "southern magic". The Others can probably bypass the wall, but it's unlikely they will be able to function there.
Then there is a question: what animated the wights that attacked Mormont and Ricker. Children of the Forest from the Isle of Faces?
Why almost no one questions why and how a wall made of ice and magic would stop magical ice beings? I feel like George is laughing at the fans naivete since 1996.
@@marcusanark2541 well, because to figure out how the Wall works you need to know how "magic" works. And, well, not that we are given enough information to figure it out.
But I'm pretty sure George has a relatively sound mechanism in his head.
@@iliaponomarev1624 You didn't catch my meaning, I think the Others built The Wall; if a wall was made with magic to protect against the "bad" ice beings supposedly servants of the "Great Other" god from a series the name has "Ice And Fire" you would suppose The Wall was made of magic fire, or coal, or magma or something more fire or R'hollor related, it would have red priests or something kind of fire sorcerers there, or maybe even if it was built by the Children it would be more forest related, with giant trees and huge magic trunks and carvings, something like the swamp from The Last Airbender, but if it was made from ice magic you wouldn't suppose there's a huge chance they were made by the ice magic beings in the story actually? I don't think The Wall is a barrier to the Others at all, I think that could be one of the later plot twists of the story.
@@marcusanark2541
Overall I think that the Wall has to be a concerted effort from both (or all three) sides to stop both "magics" going through. It should hide some kind of "fire magic" under layers of ice. E.g., Melisandra, a "fire mage" (though mostly a fraud) feels she got more powerful around the Wall.
One thought is that Benjen is 1st Ranger. I’d think it likely that he would automatically be the leader for any ranging he was part of. This would be a reason why he couldn’t be part of the ranging Royce went on.
OOTGH!!!!!!!
I’m born and raised in Maryland and I hate picking crab. I would rather muck out a stable
I’m under the impression LC Qorgyle went down to Winterfell with intent. Qorgyle likely groomed Benjen for command and Mormont being named LC makes all too much sense if Benjen is who we think he is. Mormont grooms Jon for command basically saying Benjen will never be LC, which again supports the idea that Benjen is a POS. I’m under the impression Jeor was sent to the wall to undermine Benjen and become LC if possible. Ned chose jeor because he is a lord and because the watch would be dumb not to name him LC. Jeor also was the perfect choice because he was older, he had a strong heir and honestly no lord in their prime would be willing to join the watch and Ned really needed a lord for this task. So really Jeor was the only choice.
Regarding the varied lengths of the season's, e.g. 9 year going on 10 summer, could it be a metaphor or symbolism for our world of the mental and societal shifts? The season's change in our world every few months. Maybe G.R.R.M. has the varied lengths of seasons to show/symbolize how history repeats itself. For instance, we are kind of heading back towards another cold war, or we kind of cycle back and forth on movements, e.g. sustainability, civil rights et cetera. I know it is longer gaps between in our world, but the thought occurred to me that the varied, sporadic seasons in the series may reflect the altering shifts in our world. What do you think?
Tyrion does better. He gives Bran a saddle to ride-the horse is named DANCER that’s a nice touch
@The Order of the Green Hand something to consider, now, I might be missing something, but, you've said in a past video, that Queen Alysanne's dragon refuses to go over the wall due to ancient magics. It doesn't say anything about her trying to go around, even though Eastwatch should only be a few hours (if that) flight on dragonback. So, it makes little sense to me that she didn't try to go around, but what if she got passed the eastern most edge of the wall, but her dragon still refused? What if, the magics being connected to water only amplifies those magics? Basically because of the wall, dragons can't get past going north, but The Others can't get past going south, even by boat, because the wall's magics destroy them when they try, hence why they would be seen at Eastwatch, maybe one or two tried to get around the wall and were destroyed. And more were watching, hence why they were spotted.
ShadesofJade Imo it hints that the wall isn’t for the realm of men to keep the WW out. It was a wall created by the WW to keep unwanted men and dragons (all fire magic beings as well probably) out and like all the other areas that use to belong to magical creatures it was taken over by men when it was abandoned
Does it have to be one just chapter every week? :(
Why almost no one questions why and how a wall made of ice and magic would stop magical ice beings? I feel like George is just trolling the fans that take POVs at face value, I wouldn't be the surprised if it was actually the Others that built The Wall.
The CotF isolating themselves from men and their forest-destroying agriculture could be a reason that not only men put up the wall. maybe that was a point in the pact? splitting the teritorry. wars do usually end with new borders drawn. men get to do agriculture south of the wall and get to be protected from the Others, and cotf get preseved wilderness north of the wall and sacrifices of men to weirwoods.
But now cotf want it all back and theyve been building up their strengths for ~400 years?
Love your insights!!Noticed how best rangers Mormont mentions does not include Benjen...also Mormont tells Tyrion that Jon can't go South to WF with him, that he must forget the life he left behind...Why the heck did Benjen get to go to the king's visit then? Was Benjen sent to recruit Jon to the wall without Ned's knowledge,is THAT why Cat suggests to Ned in the godswood that word should be sent to " your brother at the wall" that the king is coming north to WF,that by Luwin sending word to Benjen,it is the cue to get bastard out of WF,since we KNOW Benjen discusses Jon with Luwin before he even talks to Ned( much to Ned's surprise). Jon DID tell Tyrion that no one told him what the night's watch was really like but YOU(Tyrion)...that's because if Jon really knew,he'd never have left WF. Once you've gone you're THERE...otherwise you're a deserter.
Benjen got to visit Winterfell because he had spent enough time to accept his lot as a man of the night's watch. It's too early for Jon. After a few years, when they are sure of his temperament and loyalty, then he might be sent to Winterfell for some job.
It's not desertion if you haven't sworn vows yet AND you haven't been sent there as a punishment.
Also, as OOTGH has pointed out, Benjen most like had the liberty to "go home" sometimes because his brother was Warden of the North, Starks were a friend TO & played an important role IN sustaining the Watch, as Benjen would return to the Wall with new steel, fresh mounts, and maybe food.
White Walkers being by the shore: every encounter with them, the temperature is beyond freezing. You guys even suggest that they control the weather. Maybe the water is frozen enough for them to cross
Ever watched Seven Samurai?
Hey hey hey👋 (in a sassy girl voice)😂😂
