I had emergency spinal fusion surgery in 2006 .A broken neck , caused paralysis in my left arm .The surgery was a success .Had nerve damage in left arm .Left arm totally atrophied. I was devastated. Doctors said I'd never use my left arm again ! I refused to accept that ! I prayed and started my own rehab .At first I couldn't even move my arm .3 years later I was curling 60lb dumbbells at the gym !

Had spinal fusion at L5 S1 at UF health hospital. Neurosurgeons. After 12 years of bad back pain and horrible leg pain from a degenerative/herniated disk. They did the Alif surgery and put cobalt chrome rods screwed into my spine, spacer where the disk once was. I feel zero pain now. It’s a miracle can’t believe I suffered for so long because I thought there was no hope. Find a good surgeon. Preferably at a hospital setting. Trust them. Actually pray and trust God. There’s always a chance it could go wrong but They they have high success rate

    - I had this surgery performed on my three years ago. It was a life changing surgery. Because of my spinal fusion surgery, I can live a normal life. I can no longer play sports like I used to; however, I can walk for miles without any pain. I am a big advocate of Spinal Fusion surgery. It really works!!!

I had a fusion from T10-L2 about two months ago after fracturing my back during basic training. One more month with the back brace! I was on 20 mg of OxyContin and muscle relaxer every 4 hours. Pain has gotten better so I’m just in 800 mg of ibuprofen now but if I’m up and about for a few hours everything starts feeling very sore and just hurts. I’ve started walking around the house without my brace and sometimes there’s a lot of discomfort. Especially strain if I carry anything even 5 or more pounds. Sharp pains come and go. Hopefully I’ll make a full recovery with no pain within the next few months!

A friend of mine from work had to have his neck fused in 2014. It was just an innocent accident at home when he was replacing a lightbulb and slipped off a step ladder. The fact that he bounced back from it and stayed as healthy as ever shows how tough the guy is. There is a major drawback though. He can't spar or play basketball anymore. He's cool with shooting hoops and can still run. But he can't risk contact sports. Not when he has kids to worry about.

@cuba1300: You will be having pain for 48 hours (I mean excrutiating even with pain killers) so brace yourself for that but than after the first 48 your pain level should subside to normal and the pain killers should do the rest. Just after the first 48 try to move around in bed and work with your phys therapist because your back will get stiff if you dont move around and it becomes uncomfortable for you. Good Luck and God Speed!

I had this twice in my neck. First time it was c-3, c-4 . They went through the front, easy surgery. The next one was c-4 down to C-7. That surgery went through the back of my neck and was excruciating. I woke up crying and hyperventilating from pain. After about 3 days in the hospital on pain meds, it was much better. After all that pain, it was still better than the constant migraines I was having and loss of strength in my arms. Now my lower back is crumbling..

If you need an excellent spine surgery specialist in the Tacoma, WA area, try to get in to see Dr. Michael Martin. He has been with me through 5 lumbar surgeries, trying to keep me going when workers' comp. insurance kept playing their games and stalled me off for four years post-injury. Dr. Martin has been my saving grace, keeping on top of all that is going on. He is with Puget Sound Orthopaedics. He says we are just playing catch-up since my first surgery was stalled so long, but I hate to think where I'd be without his help! At least no parts are moving around anymore in ways they were not supposed to.

My aunts best friend didn't do it and now it's beyond the point where they will actually do the procedure and she lives in immense pain daily. This isn't something that you want to put off. Get it done while you can and you'll live a much better life for it.

A week ago I had a lumbar spinal fusion L5-S1 same levels of the discectomy and O boy this is hard. From the moment waking from the recovery room until two days ago this was unbearable pain. I am just getting used to it. Maybe it is because of the short timing between surgeries 1 - 2 but guys brace youself and ASK the proper questions.

I’ve had this done on my L-4/L-5 on my lower back . I had a herniated disc. The worst part was afterwards. I had to have physical therapy come to my house a couple days a week for a month or so. It’s not fun. I was 38 . But I don’t have that sharp pain I had before. I did develop neuropathy in my legs afterwards which isn’t any good. I say I’m better now than before . It is a very tough post operative healing time no doubt.

Vertebrae deterioration, due to osteoporosis. The neurosurgeon was not able to fuse the vertebrae because of complications, & lack of mobility so a few more rods had to be added.
The surgery went as expected, but pain persists due to the degenerative disc disease, & osteoporosis..

Having had went through three different surgery’s on my spine. I’d realized that I should’ve just got a decompression on my lumbar disk. But after having had a spinal fusion my body’s functioning is always inflamed and stiff and I live with lock ups and muscle spasms. But I had to make a choice between getting pain relief for all that I suffered from pain wise. But at that time in life so I could support my family and after the results I ended up having so many more pains and way more issues in my spine, but I kept thinking I’d get better after a while. but I didn’t have that outcome. I know pain and after living a life with pain every day more worse by months that continue to go by, I’ve decided to quit making myself wish that there was a cure to my pain that I receive and relive day after day. But that’s the life we have sometimes life is what it is rather u live in suffering extreme pain or rather u have a life of just normality pains. I know I can’t say that anyone can get used to extremely booming nerve pressed pain constantly in so many areas but I have somehow learned to cut my feelings off about ever getting any relief results because after well over 10 years I have learned my pain is here to stay. Maybe a spinal fusion one day will be more advancements than they have been practicing because causing your mobility to have no movements and just straight stiffed spined has terrible outcomes for neuropathy in both buttocks to feet and now upper neck to arms to hands it’s very scary to see how much more I have now because I went under a knife and didn’t make more choices of options I still had. Pain makes us want release and relief from the pain that we have but definitely decide that if u have a definite choose besides knife surgery’s do what options u have before being cut on for sure.

@C "Keep believing we just poofed by accident just to eventually go extinct. Ya, that's logical."
Yes, it is, because unlike your sky daddy, it's actually supported by evidence.
"You believe in freak accidents which aren't even logical."
It's only illogical in the eyes of the ignorant and the scientifically illiterate. It's funny that you think that's illogical whereas you believe in a mystical being that "created" the universe.
"Ya no. That doesn't sound likely at all to me."
It doesn't matter if it doesn't sound "likely" to you. Facts don't care about what you think.
Try again, I'm sure you can do better.

@C Irreducible Complexity is nothing but an "argument" full of fallacies.
In July 11, 2002 for example, scientists artificially re-created polio. Using only the DNA of the polio virus and a series of synthetic chemicals, they recreated the natural desire to reproduce, the ability to evolve, and all other mechanisms that make a virus, LIFE, work.
Not only does that prove that evolution is true, it also debunks your silly "Irreducible complexity."
Furthermore, look at the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School, where that silly argument failed.

But after 6 hours of this surgery which usually take 2 hours, i was absolutely normal.its been almost a year without any pain..first 2 months were uncomfortable but painless, after that everything was okay, it takes 3-6 month to fuse and 1-2 year to become as good as before...now i play badminton for hours...but my doc asked me to avoid friction games like football...but anything but that is okay...the titanium plate will be fused like steel in a concrete column, i didnt feel any pain since my surgery, and it feels as good as before....there is a minor risk like every other surgery but success rate is high, about 95% and for 5% you might have to go through the surgery again. Do not be afraid..... But after surgery, becareful, very careful for 2 months..good luck!

by right, the screw need to put into the spine for recovery and let the disc heal or bone heal. after healing, the metals need to be removed so that the arch of the spine will go back to the original position. because of the fusion, the spine can not get back to the arch it has originally. therefore, the patients will encounter pain, pain, pain and pain.

A year on, I've got the all-clear to do absolutely anything I like and have been 100% pain-free since the last of the post-op pain disappeared (which took 3-4 months). The law and medical field are slowly

loosening their tight restrictions of opiate use to certain medical conditions.

I’m highly concerned because the aftermath of epidural injections in my neck left me with Essential Tremors since 2017. I’m highly concerned now having anyone get that close to my nerves in my spine. “Is it just me or is there anyone else out there experiencing such a huge amount of bad luck with their spine” To date I’m in pain from my neck to buttocks every day. Try having a C-6 Corpectomy. They take out the vertebrae completely carve off hunk of your hip bone wittle it up a bit and stuff it in the gap then bolted together like a mechanic.

I had my L4/L5/S1 nailed together just over a year ago, with laminectomies & discectomies. Post-op pain was surprisingly bearable most of the tome

I had spinal fusion and the pain is much better. I now have a dull annoying pain but the initial crippling pain is gone.

+Norma Saez I know how it goes. I had the surgery back in June. Fell off my deck when building a new railing. Had 6 weeks off work lounging around the house last summer. Doctor says I should wait until next spring to continue my house remodeling. Full healing takes a while.

I had my fusion June 2014 and now over a year I still have pain. Though the initial pain is gone, I have a different pain. Doc says it takes a long time to heal. But this is too long.

+Norma Saez I just want to say that I had the same surgery as you spinal fusion on L5/S1. Degenerative disc disease. The surgery was on 8th of August 2015, so before 38 days. Three hours after the surgery I got up and walked very slowly. Now I dont have pain while long sitting and can stand long and walk normally. I am bending forward with a little pain and I little bit scare that I will have that pain for whole life, but doctor told me to be patient cause fusion takes a time to find appropriate place in lumbar area. Now I started with streching muscles and building abdomen muscles which is very important and after exercises my bending is better but without exercise when I want to bend forward sometimes I feel pain and sometimes not. How was your bending after surgery and how is now? I will be very thankful if you can answer me. Thanks in advance.

As long as I take medication I can bend. Except for the mornings. I can't bend. I actually throw the cat food from afar. Because I can't bend.

+Norma Saez Thank you for your answering Norma. Do you have a feeling as time goes on that you have less pain when bending? I hope that everything gonna be ok. Just need a time for full recovering and for that period very improtant is do not lift anything which is more heavy than 5 kilos. Wish u good luck in recovering and return to normal life.

I have Retrolisthesis, my anterior spinal fusion surgery is scheduled in a few weeks. I’m surprised that this video didn’t mention this condition. It’s apparently a rare disorder when a vertebrae slips backwards ( in my case the L5 over the S1) it’s extremely painful. I have no feeling on the top of my feet, and there are some days where the pain is so intense that I get nauseous and throw up. I cannot wait for my surgery….
