Why? Wilson was just a reflection of his time. People seem to think that racism was solely a Southern problem. We just didn't hide ours like the rest of the country did. Also. I think FDR did much worse when he put American citizens of Japanese decent into Prison camps and had the US government seize their property and assets. Or JFK nearly starting a nuclear war.

12:40 Not to bring up today's politics, but former President Trump is also a president who failed to get re-elected, which would be the first since Bush Sr.. Also, if Biden fails to get re-elected this year, this will be the first time since the 1892 election that we've had two one-term presidents in a row, not counting terms where the president died in office or resigned.
I understand why they chose the "Read My Lips" speech for GW, but I'm a little surprised they didn't go for him vomiting in the lap of the Japanese Prime Minister during a visit to Tokyo when he had food poisoning from fish.
Even though he wasn't ever President, Al Haig during the Reagan assassination attempt was an infamous when he said, "Constitutionally, gentlemen, you have the president, the vice president, and the secretary of state in that order, and should the president decide he wants to transfer the helm to the vice president, he will do so." Like what was he trying to do in that moment?! Also, George W Bush was in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, not the Air Force Reserve

Honorable mention imo, FDR withholding knowledge of the Manhattan Project from Truman. I can imagine what was going through Truman's mind when he was told "by the way Roosevelt was working on a Dooms Day weapon that he purposely kept you in the dark about, maybe he though you were dumb or untrustworthy, I dunno..."
"Embarrassing" is the wrong kind of adjective for most of these. Many of them are disgraceful, and most of the embarrassement is in historical hindsight. For George W Bush they could have picked his speech where he said [I paraphrase out of memory] "our enemies never stop thinking about harming the US, and so do we".
Exactly. I guess a stain in the country's history is sort of embarrassing but that's hardly something that causes blushes and more something that should've condemned those people making the decisions and the ones carrying out the deeds to trial for warcrimes. Embarrassing would be gaffs, falls, a bad photo; things of that nature. Although with that said, the US going so far out of its way to never punish its leaders is uniquely embarrassing. Even a so called 3rd world countries do an excellent job reeling in their corrupt leaders.
Hey VTH, sorry about your laptop I hope you can get it back. I have been subbed since 10,000 subscribers and I love these reaction videos because you put in good, interesting information. Keep up the good work!
Yes, James Buchanan is remembered for his inaction, but he did also MAKE some very bad decisions such as endorsing the pro-slavery Lecompton constitution in Kansas when it was clear that the majority of the people living in Kansas were not pro-slavery. This, in my opinion, is an outright violation of his presidential oath.
The trail of tears was especially bad because Jackson flat out ignored a Supreme Court ruling that said the removal was illegal. He just chose not to listen to it.
@orobas8080 There is a universe of difference between "I'm going to try something different that does comply with the ruling that says I can't do this" and "Screw you, I'm the president, I can do what I want and your stupid court rulings can't stop me"
To be fair to Wilson (whoa guys, settle down), he was elected in November of 1916, the Zimmerman Telegram was January 1917, Inauguration was March 4, 1917, and Wilson called for war before Congress on April 2, 1917 (and they agreed 82-6). FDR asked Congress to declare war against Japan the same year he was re-inaugurated after campaigning that "The nation will remain a neutral nation, as long as it remains within my power to prevent, there will be no blackout of peace in the United States" The way you said it made it sound like you thought it was an unfounded about-face... tho I'm pretty sure that's *not* how you actually see it. (That said, Sedition Acts can bugger off, whether it's Wilson, Adams, or what Bush tried to push through)
You forgot the Black Tom explosions that happened July 30, 1916 due to agents of the then German Empire. It was so severe that it turned American sentiment more pro-war than pro-peace, and necessitated America creating an intelligence community in the country which now span multiple agencies (FBI, CIA, NSA, etc.).
FDR was backing the British. He knew he had to prep for war. He kept up the draft for that reason. No embarrassing for him since he was just trying to pacify anti-war people until he could persuade them.
But then you have to include the fact that the incoming Reagan administration before the election committed treason by negotiating with Iran behind the nation's back to delay the hostage release.
I liked this video and your analysis of it, but I do wish they'd split it into two videos; one about biggest stains on presidential kegacies and one about just actual emberassing moments (the "No new taxes" being a possible example, even milder being Ford's "tumble"). Maybe even a third: post/pre-presidential moments.
Fun little fact when Bush made that statement on that ship my brother was on that ship severing, what they don't tell you though is they where so close to San Diego. You could see the shore from the ship but they made them stop out there so Bush could fly on and make his statement. He also said at one point the secret service had to tell them to be quiet cause they where like moving stuff ready to go ashore the next day and Bush was trying to sleep.
And that ship Abraham Lincoln was the one that got deployed longer then it should've of cause of some shady stuff not getting into that, so they where all ready to go home they where not happy about that.
Great video as always Chris! One nitpick I have is that if you look at the 92 election, after Perot's campaign initally tanked and he dropped out, and after the Democratic convention, Clinton was leading by around 55 to 31 percent. Perot got back in and won the first debate, which boosted his numbers to 19%, but ultimately, it was the economy and the broken pledge that cost Bush the election. If it was a two-way race, Clinton still would have won comfortably (would have been best for the country if Perot won, though).
The shoe throwing was only embarrassing because it missed, not because of the target or his disasterous foreign policy that still affects our society and economy to this day. My personal favorite embarrassing moment though has to be Herman Cain's hilarious success to be the token minority that at one point was a top tier candidate before the "allegations" came out and he had to drop out in disgrace. He gave us not only AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW Shucky Ducky!, but he ended his campaign by quoting the Pokemon movie. Being a sexual predator and general goof ball, Herman Cain was ahead of his time for presidential politics. He'd probably win in a landslide if he ran today against both guys right now.

I don't believe Chris falls into that category. My guess is that he intentionally didn't mention him because he is currently running and could end up serving a second term afterall. If that happens, Biden would also become a single term President
A lot of historians avoid things that have happened within a certain window because of recency bias. It could be that he wasn’t even thinking about the 2020 election since it was pretty recent history

The president has no control over the constitution, so they literally can't do anything about it. Only congress has the power to make and pass amendments..
Saying "everyone" was on board with Iraq is not accurate. Many leaders, and a large percentage of the population disagreed with invading Iraq. Bush ignored those voices
In reference to George Bush (sr). I voted for him the 1st time. I specifically remember he also indicated he would veto if congress passed any. When he didn't keep this promise, I didn't vote for him. I didn't vote for Perot either I voted for another independent candidate.
I thought the "Mission Accomplished" banner was finaly claimed to be only for that aircraft carrier that was on the way back home from it's mission. Then Bush PR used it for visuals.
What Harding did is an example of the recent decision by the Supreme Court can have drastic consequence no matter what party or ideology no one should be held unaccountable for there actions.
That's incorrect. There is accountability. There always was, and there still is. What the recent SCOTUS decision did was put on paper to limit the power of courts of states and the DoJ. To prosecute a President they need to be impeached and convicted by the senate then the DoJ/State courts can go after him for that crime since Conviction just removes him from office. Without that decision in place, A Republican or any party leader that gets into office could go after and prosecute any former or would be future president. A prime example of this would be Trump getting into office and having his DoJ go after Obama, or the state of Texas, on the grounds of murder (he did drone strike US citizens). With the decision that was released they can't do that without congress impeaching and convicting Obama. Without that protection we'll see a back and forth of prosecution of political rivals across the political spectrum. It would undermined the checks and balances that were set in place by the founding fathers.
Official acts not all acts so say if Bill Clinton was to get sued for raping someone after leaving the White House he isn’t protected and I just used him as an example because it’s Bill freaking Clinton
There was that one time some Iraqi dude threw a shoe at Bush... Less embarrassing for him but definitely embarrassing for the Secret Service. You had one job!!!
I think the Logan Act (signed by President Adams in 1799) is still on the books. It’s sometimes considered part of the Alien and Sedition Acts by some. But it’s a separate law (however follows the aforementioned Acts). I think that law needs to be repealed.
When Davy Crockett was voted out of office as a Tennessee Congressman for opposing the Indian Removal Act, he told his former constituents, "You all may go to Hell. I will go to Texas." 🤟
Reagan kept saying that he didn’t recall his role in Irangate/Contragate. Some say it was true, due to his Alzheimer’s. Others say his Alzheimer’s diagnosis was much later, and his symptoms were not apparent at that time. That’s what I remember about that “embarrassing” moment.

The one thing about the Monica Lewinsky scandal that doesn't get talked about enough in that it was less about the affair, it was more about it being a superior having sexual relations with a subordinate. The power that Clinton had, not only as President, but as the "boss" of Lewinsky, he had power over her with regards to her job and could use that he well pleased
For JFK, if he had the media of the past 30 years, imagine the embarrassment for JFK with all his infidelity. Especially JFK's relationship with Ellen Rometsch. Heck, Jackie Kennedy was embarrassed by the May of 1962 Marilyn Monroe "Happy Birthday" singing to JFK. Jackie Kennedy was not at the birthday fundraiser. Jackie didn’t like going to fundraisers. And when she was told about Marilyn being there, she told her sister, “Life’s too short to worry about Marilyn Monroe.”Jackie and the children were at the First Family’s Glen Ora estate outside Middleburg, Virginia, enjoying what she called “a good clean life.” So was Jackie mad? Not really at John. She had learned to deal with the issues of John’s infidelity. She was pissed at Robert Kennedy. The next day, Jackie called Ethel Kennedy (Bobby’s wife) and said, “My understanding of it is that Bobby was the one who orchestrated the whole goddamn thing. The Attorney General is the troublemaker here, Ethel. Not the President. So it’s Bobby I’m angry at, not Jack.”
The issue with the Clinton and Trump stuff is that it’s all personal business. I don’t factor in character like you and Mr. Beat do (love your ranking videos btw), I only care about effectiveness and if they were good for the country or not.
Trump was hiding a scandal at a time when he was weak just before the election. That's what made it a felony instead of just a minor accounting charge.
I'm honestly surprised that Carter's handling of the Iran hostage crisis wasn't on the list. When Chris was wondering aloud which would be number 1, I assumed it would be this...
Another thing people rarely mention about the Bush & Iraq thing - Saddam was being very intentionally uncooperative & threw out UN weapons inspectors. I know it's easily ignored or forgotten now, but Iraq HAD WMDs in the recent past & had even used them against its own people. They finally agreed to cooperate with UN laws & inspections to show they were on the up & up, only to then abruptly stop. Even before the actual invasion, Bush & US officials all but said they will invade if they don't address this & begin cooperation again, but Saddam was defiant & refused. So along with the inaccurate intelligence being provided to Bush & the UN, satellite images showing these mobile sites, and Saddam's refusal to continue cooperating with the UN, it made people on both sides convinced there was something bad they were hiding. I'm seriously not trying to justify anything, the war was definitely a huge mistake, only providing context for those who think it was solely a Bush thing when in reality, 90% of congress agreed & voted for war.
Actually, the inspectors were allowed back in and were within weeks of a formal report declaring that Iraq had complied with UN resolutions. Iraq had used chemical weapons 15 years before in the Iran-Iraq War and against Kurds and Shi’ite Muslims who were supportive of Iran. So it wasn’t recently. Saddam didn’t want it known by his enemies within and without Iraq because he was afraid of invasion.
It's worth noting that public opinion in other countries who joined the war was very different from public opinion in the US. In the UK there was huge opposition to the Iraq war among the public (though the two main parties did support the war). It was widely known here that the UN weapons inspectors were close to declaring that Iraq didn't actually have WMDs anymore.

29:52 “44 individuals served as president.” Wrong. 43 individuals. Grover Cleveland was counted twice as the 22nd and 24th president. If Trump is successful this year, he will be the 45th and 47th president.

But I've hit "don't recommend channel" a while ago for a reason. I'm here though because why not learn history with more context?
I would have to disagree that everyone was on board with it. In fact, Biden and Clinton voting for the war showed a lot of us that the democrats weren't the party for us any longer.
The corruption from the 2020 election came from the lack of security for the mail-in ballots. Too many photos and videos and common sense about how they were corrupted, trashed, or sifted, especially in swing states.
As interesting as it is that Trump is the first former president to be convicted, it's the only event on their list that happened outside the time the individual served as President. I think they should've kept it to the confines of their presidency, then maybe do a video about most embarrassing moments during the life of a president, haha.
It happened literally within days of the election, for the purpose of influencing the election. I think it's splitting hairs to look that as being outside of his presidency. It's not like this happened back in the 1990s when he was just a real estate guy.
Well they could have gone with the "injecting bleach" and "exposing your blood to UV light" thing. Or his perfect phone call. #20 -- And if anyone had bothered to hear the speech Bush made they'd know "Mission Accomplished" meant the mission to liberate Iraq from Saddam Hussein. And made very plain that the really challenging part will be the rebuilding/reconstruction of Iraq into hopefully a good democratic, non-dictatorship nation and it will take many years and should absolutely NOT figure on any sort of quick fixes.

The trail of tears as i know it, was neither genocide nor ethnic cleansing. They were not being directly killed for their race(like the holocaust in Europe), they were being relocated forcibly because other people wanted that land. They were lied to then conquered. Doesn't make it right(in fact, quite the opposite), but this idea that Jackson went Hitler mode on Native Americans is just wrong. Those two terms are being watered down just like racism to fit a particular narrative. Genocide and ethnic cleansing mean something specific, and it is an insult to those who HAVE undergone either to misuse the terms.
It's obvious that people who say that, don't know or forget that Jackson adopted a native American son. He wasn't a maniac like Hitler or other leaders who've targeted ethnic/religious minorities, he was simply doing what he thought was best for his people, however misguided the action was.
I’d take one of the more dubious entries and replace it with Jimmy Carter wnd the hostage crisis where Iran took several Americans as hostages whom were not released until barely after Ronald Reagan’s inauguration. As an aside, it was a situation that saw NBC create their now famous news show _Nightline_ , originally hosted by Ted Koppel, it gave nightly updates on the ordeal.
Falsifing records is not a felony in NY, it is a misdemeanor and the statute of limitations had expired. However, if attached to another felony, then you can charge it as a felony. And the felony it was attached to was never specified in court.
Statute of limitations was extended, I think for covid. Completely legal. The underlying crime is just needed to raise the intent to a felony, so it's a means of the crime that doesn't need to be specified. It's like how in a murder trial the prosecution doesn't have to specify what weapon was used
@benroberts2222 True , but that is bad law. An unspecified felony necessarily means there does not need to be a felony at all. It can just be imagined by the prosecution and a biased jury. And the statute was extended when upgraded to a felony.

Ha! I can only imagine the poor soul who had to deliver that briefing to Truman.

Eh, not really embarrassing on the same level.

When Bush vomited on the Japanese PM. That is a personal embarrassing moment
To be fair to Wilson (whoa guys, settle down), he was elected in November of 1916, the Zimmerman Telegram was January 1917, Inauguration was March 4, 1917, and Wilson called for war before Congress on April 2, 1917 (and they agreed 82-6).
FDR asked Congress to declare war against Japan the same year he was re-inaugurated after campaigning that "The nation will remain a neutral nation, as long as it remains within my power to prevent, there will be no blackout of peace in the United States"
The way you said it made it sound like you thought it was an unfounded about-face... tho I'm pretty sure that's *not* how you actually see it.
I thought the Iran Hostage Crisis from Carter's administration could have been added
Yes! To include the failed rescue attempt.
Also Reagan having secret talks to prevent the release of the hostages before the election.
Fun little fact when Bush made that statement on that ship my brother was on that ship severing, what they don't tell you though is they where so close to San Diego. You could see the shore from the ship but they made them stop out there so Bush could fly on and make his statement.

He gave us not only AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW Shucky Ducky!, but he ended his campaign by quoting the Pokemon movie. I assume that is because Trump and many of his supporters believe he did not legitimately lose because of shenanigans in 2020

Old chemical WMDs were found after the invasion as well.
