for a while simple playing was underrated by everyone other than punks. Now people finally respect rhythm section again, and even casual listeners dig the pocket... but all the fuss is mostly about funk and R&B, so same as usual only heads care about punk. 😎
Man, I've been playing along to Pixies songs for years. Although I was technically playing them right, I found that I could never quite lock in with what Kim was playing. Then I watched this video; NO DYNAMICS, downstrokes only, and prioritise the snare over the kick. Wow, now I'm instantly playing in the pocket on every song. These videos are genuinely making me a better bass player. Thanks again for another great lesson!!!
Kim Deal is very musical. She's a great songwriter. Impressively, even as a young musician, it felt like she wasn't trying to impress anyone -- she just liked music and wanted to play what sounded right to her. Her whole vibe feels like you and your buddies playing in a garage band, but she's really good at her craft and very creative. Her playing and singing feel authentic and sound good, and she has a good feel for getting the right groove for her bands' songs. Furthermore, I feel like if you listen to Kim's bass intros on Surfer Rosa and then you listen to some Nirvana, it seems to me that Kim influenced Krist Novoselic's bass style. Listen to Kim's bass intro to Hey and then listen to Krist's bass intro to, for example, Polly. I feel like Kim's bass was definitely a stylistic influence.
she is a genius of harmonic progression. Something totally fundamental for any musician bass player and many of their's songs go forward beyond of tipically 4/4 and 4 or 8 chords progressions
Kim Deal is one of my favourite bass players! I’m just a guitar player who loves your videos because I’m learning so much about how bass arrangements work. How about a video on Carol Kaye?
No Kim? No Pixies. And Doolittle is one of my favorite albums. I bought it on cassette back in the summer of 1989 and my mind was blown. How about an analysis of Paul Raven of Killing Joke or John Doe of X in the future?
So i finally found out why she was only bassist whose tone i would be able to be close to when i started playing and didn't knew shit about getting the right tone. Sge just didn't give a shit about the tone. What a lesson for me...
Well done, love your explanations and analysis. Thought her gear was more complex and she uses an additional EQ and compression, but maybe with the right playing technique, the old strings and the right instrument / amp combination, this could work. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to see more videos from you.
In my opinion I think Kim Deal is a very underrated bass player and musician she has paved so much for many bands. Pixies didn't inspire a ton of people but even the breeders did.
I actually dreamed about Kim Deal the other night. It was a recent tv interview. I can't remember what show it was or what she talked about, except it was all about playing bass with The Pixies!
Hey, if you're still looking for great female bassists to focus on, I would love to see a video on Kathy Valentine of The Go-Go's. Her bass lines are so iconic. You can totally recognize it's one of their songs just from the bass alone...plus I'm going to see them live next week in San Francisco 😁
@PaulDelBelloYT I'd be really interested in watching you doing a video about bassist Leslie Langston of Pixies' early tourmates Throwing Muses. She is in my opinion one of the most unsung bassists, I can find nothing on youtube specifically about her particularly melodic style of bass playing.
Hopefully for your next vid you can talk about what D'arcy from Smashing Pumpkins. I know Bilky took control and did most of the basslines sadly but I know D'arcy parts are in some sp albums. Or even yet a vid about Lorna Doom from the germs.
NOBODY sound like anybody else. Learn your own style!! I can't take new strings either.... I'm not copying...just trying to send tons young one learning!
bernard edwards from Chic never changed his strings, neither did James Jamerson. If they dont need new strings, nobody does.....well apart from mark king who changes them every 45 mins lol

Paul could you do a video about fake to be a '' jazzy bass player ''?
Her bass line for "Hey" is the reason I started playing the bass.
since were on the subject of female bassists you should do Tina Weymouth from the talking heads. she's practically genius when it comes to bass
A genius of love, you might say
Yes, Tina is a genius!
I feel like she’s become underrated
@@christiangarrity6889 that word again...

The bass line from Here Comes Your Man is no joke, especially as she sang while doing it.

The track labelled 'There's no other way' is actually 'I bleed'.
I always like Kim Deal's playing and sound. Cool video, thank you.
Yep, I came here to say the sa!e... 5:12 is "I bleed". Great vid though.
leftover from the Blur video. Still, great analysis.
Kim Deal is my bass spirit animal; when I was able to nail the bass line to Gigantic by memory, that's when it felt confident on bass
Kim is one of my all time favorite bass players and singers. Love the Pixies, and Imo she is a huge reason why they are so cool.
Next bass Kim: Kim Gordon, please! I always learn something from your videos and it’s cool to see women bassists represented.
Thanks! The bass line really drives most Pixies songs. Paz Lenchantin is a great player too.

Doolitle, this record got one of the best bass tone of rock history.
she is a genius of harmonic progression. Something totally fundamental for any musician bass player

She really inspired me to play bass , so simple and so cool lines !
Great analysis as always. Tal Wilkenfeld from Jeff Beck's band is an amazing bassist. Love to see a breakdown of her style.
Her solo stuff is quite good to.
Kim Deal is one of my favourite bass players! I’m just a guitar player who loves your videos because I’m learning so much about how bass arrangements work.
How about a video on Carol Kaye?
I mean without Carol you wouldn't have the foundations of influential 60s music.
This is one of the best pixies analysis I ever watched! Well done brother
No Kim? No Pixies. And Doolittle is one of my favorite albums. I bought it on cassette back in the summer of 1989 and my mind was blown. How about an analysis of Paul Raven of Killing Joke or John Doe of X in the future?
Thank You for acknowledging her simple genius
Such an underrated bassist
Kim is the ultimate Rock N' Roll Queen ❤️
Not really, I think joan jett RnR queen
So i finally found out why she was only bassist whose tone i would be able to be close to when i started playing and didn't knew shit about getting the right tone. Sge just didn't give a shit about the tone. What a lesson for me...
Joe Lally, Mike Watt, Eric Avery, Kim Gordon, Mikey Shoes, Nate Mendel, Scott Reeder, Al Cisneros, Richard Hell
Yes, especially the first two
Absolutely second Mikey shoes, Scott Reeder and Al Cisneros

Very nice choice again and spot-on style analysis 😀👍🏻⭐
In my opinion I think Kim Deal is a very underrated bass player and musician she has paved so much for many bands. Pixies didn't inspire a ton of people but even the breeders did.
Just repeating other comments, but your analysis and delivery is great. Just great work.
5:13 is "I Bleed" !
I actually dreamed about Kim Deal the other night. It was a recent tv interview. I can't remember what show it was or what she talked about, except it was all about playing bass with The Pixies!
nice analysis man, can you do "how to sound like Colin Greenwood from Radiohead" next?
It would be awesome
Really really great. Learned a lot I must say! Would love to see you do more videos on the pixies if at all possible :(
Fantastica Kim! Ho ripreso il basso in mano per imparare qualche canzone delle sue 😄
If not Kim I would never touch the bass. Then came another Kim but from Sonic Youth and later Flea:)
You could mention her stage action and followers too! Great bassist
+1 on KV! Great bass lines!
I love the old pixies stuff, but Lenchantin is a beast and a great replacement
How about you give some perspective on D'arcy Wretzky (Did I spell that right?) from the Smashing Pumpkins?
Up
So basically how to play bass like Billy Corgan
Could you make one of Dion Lunadon, former bassist of APTBS
please
@PaulDelBelloYT I'd be really interested in watching you doing a video about bassist Leslie Langston of Pixies' early tourmates Throwing Muses. She is in my opinion one of the most unsung bassists, I can find nothing on youtube specifically about her particularly melodic style of bass playing.
Please, make a video about Glenn Hughes!
If you really want to talk about a female bassist, Suzi Quatro was actually a decent player with a lot of interesting things in her playing
very expressive player who has incredible ability to sing lead and front a band while playing great bass
Loving the new camera quality!
Great video. Please do Eric avery and/or Tommy stinson
Hi Paul. great analysis. How do you get kim's tone, thank you from Argentina, I hope you play with some Doberman here.
Paz from old perfect circle?
Hopefully for your next vid you can talk about what D'arcy from Smashing Pumpkins. I know Bilky took control and did most of the basslines sadly but I know D'arcy parts are in some sp albums. Or even yet a vid about Lorna Doom from the germs.
Caan u do one about debbie googe?
can you do "How to sound like Steve Severin frow Siouxsie And The Banshees"
Up
No 'The', I think people might say 'I love the pixies' in casual conversation (which is fine imo) but they are just 'Pixies' on the record sleeves.
Hey nice work, love these Videos. Could you please do a Video about Sean Anderson from finger eleven?
Frank Black said in an interview they liked to be called Pixies, not The Pixies
Paz, please!
Well made video.
How about Esperanza Spalding?
Paul did a lot of sharp riff analysis! Bonus: mentioning Dunlop! But he didn't mention how Kim Deal dances: ua-cam.com/video/sQ0xStKTQng/v-deo.html 😀
Oh that's why I love her. I don't know what I'm doing.
The one true goddess of bass is also called Kim... Gordon
A kim gordon episode? Nice content
NOBODY sound like anybody else.
Learn your own style!!
I can't take new strings either.... I'm not copying...just trying to send tons young one learning!
Two worthy woman bass players Corey Parks of Nashville Pussy- Die Hunns etc or Patricia Morrison of Gun Club- Sisters of Mercy.
MORE female bassists please!
bernard edwards from Chic never changed his strings, neither did James Jamerson. If they dont need new strings, nobody does.....well apart from mark king who changes them every 45 mins lol
I feel like you missed an opportunity to talk about her style in the breeders
Kim Deal played rhythm guitar in the Breeders. Josephine Wiggs played bass.
How To Sound Like Kim Deal If You Only Have An Electric Guitar?
The Jesus Lizard David William Smins Please
To be honest her style doesn't really interest me, but fitting the band's style is definetly more important than anything else
52 episodes in and just now featuring a girl? Disgusting.
Would have been nice to hear her and not listen to narrator
The perfect recipe how to be a subpar bass player
that recipe worked out pretty well for her I'd say!
stick to dream theater or your jazz fusion LPs grandad
hey its an alternative rock band. its good for the style. but its not really interesting for a technique breakdown
Quite wrong. If you played ghost notes and fills every 4 bars it would have sucked. She was actually the perfect bass player for that band
With these mediocre bass player that this guy review, we need a How to sound like Sid Vicious,
