You need to listen to some more music because you clearly haven't heard very much. "Such great musicians." - I have no idea why you would even think of saying this.
LOL - Kelly can actually play the songs for the most part, I remember seeing them at slims before they released Last Splash, when Kelley first joined the band...and let's just say, she wasn't ready for prime time, she'd just stop in the middle of songs while everyone played on like nothing was happening, except Josephine had this intense annoyed looked, and Kim would look at her with this.... with this apologetic "What I can I do, she's my sister?" look
Kim has one of the most unique voices in music. There's some strange biology at play that makes it sound like there are always two people singing in unison. So thick, so sweet, a human saxophone reed.
Man, that's a brilliant description. I would have never thought of putting it that way. But that's EXACTLY what it is. The vocals to "Off You" could easily be a sax solo of an avant garde, jazzy nature.
It warms my heart to see them so happy, when they started playing "Off you" I just couldn't help it and started crying. This amazing, such a great band.
I'm so so so glad they played "Off you" it is my most favorite song of all time. I will just put it on repeat until I fall asleep. Greatest song of all time. SO pure.. So great
The Breeders were one of the first 10 artists I bought when i was 8 years old. First, I loved Last Splash because it was just fun. As I grew into my teen years the album took on a lot of meaning for me and in my 20's the Breeders were always what I needed when I felt hopeless. Kim Deal's Voice has been a warm blanket after my tragedies, and for that I will always be grateful.
First 3 albums: Dinosaur Jr. Where You Been, Temple of the Dog, and Last Splash. Followed closely by Pod. Kim Deal 😍 my spirit animal. This just took me back to age 14 so hard. What I would give to see them live.
@@dcthegreatest24 Last Splash was also one of my very first records. Along with Radiohead's Pablo Honey and Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins. The year was 1995 and I was 14 years old.
After you listen to the Breeders songs a bunch of times, it dawns on you, "wow, some of these are the most beautiful songs I've ever heard!" Off You, Fortunately Gone, Forced to Drive, Spacewoman... It's hard to believe it's the same band as Limehouse, When I Was a Painter, Huffer, London Song.
Gives me hope as a 25 yr old aspiring musician. A year into learning guitar and songwriting. These bands remind me you can have a life doing music far past the popular appearance of youth. I often feel discouraged thinking i started too late. But fuck it.
As an older guy who saw the Pixies at the Lone Star in Kansas City in '88, I should give you a helpful heads-up here, and also some encouragement. The Deals, and the other Breeders (and Frank Black and the rest of the Pixies, etc) are gifted, but their approach to "learning guitar [or any instrument] and songwriting," is a kind of non-technical, intuitive, and intentionally naive one. (This is not a put-down of those people.) It is not like going to Guitar Institute of Technology, or being harangued by a gnarled old guitar teacher who nags at you to learn all the scales in all the keys, and corrects you if you use your thumb instead of a barre to get the bass note in a bar chord. The do-it-yourself approach works for the Deals because they have some kind of perfect pitch and telepathic talent. One of the reasons they never get bored or intellectually impatient with this approach, or decided to become virtuosos or jazz musicians or study music theory, etc, is because having alcohol-and-drug related "fun" held them back from such busy work. Again, not a put-down--from a musical standpoint anyway. However, I would strongly advise you NOT to do drugs or drink heavily.
I'm 56, and my band is getting ready to record our 1st full-length album. We're not "famous", but we have some local recognition, and more importantly, we're having fun and making music we love.
Listening to the Breeders makes you realize that it’s a miracle Kim lasted so long in the pixies. Pixies should have made use of Kim’s vocal and songwriting talents way more than they allowed her.
100%! I know there were two sides to all that drama between she and Charles, but I can’t help but feel like he was a butthead lol. I wish they could have worked it out. Pixies quality took a dive after she left
Such attention, care and patience go into these songs. That can be traced with commendable consistency straight back to 'Pod', but If you did not notice it before, this performance brings it to the forefront. Beautyful!

the Deal sisters are a force of nature. i ran to this album over and over and over after i had an unfortunate heart attack at 46. i oved this song the most . it would make me cry and i had no idea why.
David Lynch should have incorporated the Breeders into his Twin Peaks soundtrack from the Roadhouse along with the Chromatics, Au Revoire Simone, Eddie Vetter, Nine Inch Nails, The Veils among others. The lyrics and how the Breeders incorporate rhythm and melody together is unique and makes Kim Deal's Breeders one of the best along with her former band The Pixies. Thanks for posting this, another gem from the NPR small desk.
this version of "Off You" is amazing because of the candid moments such as Kim laughing. love this version, it's less taut and full of passion! the breeders forever!!!!!!

they always get the slacker label (probably cos one of em always has a beanie) but Kim is such a meticulous and subtle whiz at arranging
