The Breeders: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- April 16, 2018 | Lars Gotrich -- After many iterations, hiatuses and returns, The Breeders will always be Kim Deal's band, with her sister Kelley at her side. They return this year to an old lineup, with all the promise (and old wounds) it brings. But you can see a renewed love and goofiness throughout this set - using a roadie as a crash cymbal, or Kim Deal's faux-exasperation at Josephine Wiggs for starting a wind-up toy just before a song.
The same group behind the band's breakout, 1993 Last Splash - a sugar-smacked, alt-pop album that sounded like nothing else in the underground pushed to rock radio - just released All Nerve in March. Now bassist Wiggs and drummer Jim Macpherson join Kim and Kelley Deal for this Tiny Desk Concert.
"Somehow, between the four of us getting in the basement [and] playing together again, it all just felt exactly the same as the good times before everything," Kelley Deal told NPR. "It was just really fun."
The new songs don't have the same punch as Last Splash; rather, they are wizened, frazzled and, with a generous mix of crunch and dreamy scuzz, explore themes of encroaching isolation and dissatisfaction. The Breeders play two songs from All Nerve - the lysergic "MetaGoth" and the gorgeously strange and sweet title track - plus "Off You" from 2002's Title TK, an excellent album worth revisiting if you haven't listened in a while. It's a reminder that, while you can hear the raw charm of The Breeders in younger bands, no one still quite sounds like them.

1987: I love Kim
2021: I love Kim
I luv them all !!!
She's always smiling that great smile💕💕
oh yeah.
I saw her first!
2500 still love Kim 🎩🌹☺️
My 30 year crush on the Deal sisters marches on. Such great musicians.
You gotta be shittin me you could do 2 hours of that...
You and me both, pal :-)
You need to listen to some more music because you clearly haven't heard very much. "Such great musicians." - I have no idea why you would even think of saying this.
LOL - Kelly can actually play the songs for the most part, I remember seeing them at slims before they released Last Splash, when Kelley first joined the band...and let's just say, she wasn't ready for prime time, she'd just stop in the middle of songs while everyone played on like nothing was happening, except Josephine had this intense annoyed looked, and Kim would look at her with this.... with this apologetic "What I can I do, she's my sister?" look
They are transgender
Seeing Kim smile so much makes my heart full
Kim still smiles so charmingly through all her songs!
Like she just took a load.
I was going to comment the same thing. That's why I scroll through the comments .
That's beautiful, ass wipe.
She smiles like she knows something no one else does.
Her smiles are a poor effort to take the attention away of the bad musicianship.
Kim has one of the most unique voices in music. There's some strange biology at play that makes it sound like there are always two people singing in unison. So thick, so sweet, a human saxophone reed.
Man, that's a brilliant description. I would have never thought of putting it that way. But that's EXACTLY what it is.
The vocals to "Off You" could easily be a sax solo of an avant garde, jazzy nature.
and then her biological twin sings with her
Cigs are the reason man
@@g.z.8495 Yeah, cause she's the only singer in the world that smokes cigarettes.
Yeahh I agree! Maybe it's the breathiness of her voice that makes it sound polyphonic
-What instrument do you play in the band? -I'm the Crash cymbal.
Yeah it's the only band in the world that uses a living person as a crash cymbal.
/Not sure about big staduim gigs/
GOLD! 😂
Kim and Kelley's vocals always make me happy. Natural mood lifter!
Those beautiful smiles dont hurt either😊
I cant stop watching this show 5 years later 🙂 Such a amazing band from my childhood
It warms my heart to see them so happy, when they started playing "Off you" I just couldn't help it and started crying.
This amazing, such a great band.
❤️ is going to be here
Kim Deal is one awesome woman.
I'm so so so glad they played "Off you" it is my most favorite song of all time. I will just put it on repeat until I fall asleep. Greatest song of all time. SO pure.. So great
Off You is such a pretty song. So mellow, so sad
This was about 2 hours too short.
I'd say about infinity too short!
Yeah!!
It's a tiny desk concert.. what would you expect?
@@heavymetal116 2 hours more? [kidding]
I concur.
This band has a subtlety
that no other rock band has. It's minimalistic rock music at it's best.
Wow! Great point! It's what I love about them too!
You nailed it. Their subtle uniqueness is their defining quality. Amen!!!
The Breeders were one of the first 10 artists I bought when i was 8 years old. First, I loved Last Splash because it was just fun. As I grew into my teen years the album took on a lot of meaning for me and in my 20's the Breeders were always what I needed when I felt hopeless. Kim Deal's Voice has been a warm blanket after my tragedies, and for that I will always be grateful.
I'm curious. What were the other 9 artists?
Pod
Pish
First 3 albums: Dinosaur Jr. Where You Been, Temple of the Dog, and Last Splash. Followed closely by Pod. Kim Deal 😍 my spirit animal. This just took me back to age 14 so hard. What I would give to see them live.
@@dcthegreatest24 Last Splash was also one of my very first records. Along with Radiohead's Pablo Honey and Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins. The year was 1995 and I was 14 years old.
"Off You" is such a beautiful song. One of my favourites.
After you listen to the Breeders songs a bunch of times, it dawns on you, "wow, some of these are the most beautiful songs I've ever heard!" Off You, Fortunately Gone, Forced to Drive, Spacewoman... It's hard to believe it's the same band as Limehouse, When I Was a Painter, Huffer, London Song.
Brilliant brilliant people so grateful to be on this planet with them
oh my gawd
Mrs. Smith! Fancy seeing you here. I love you so much!
...and a brilliant observation. Grateful to be on this planet with you also!
Great comment, so glad you let us listen to your greatness of music.
Yo si estoy agradecido por compartir el tiempo y lugar y espació con esta gente maravillosa
Kim's joy when she plays is palpable - it's all over her face...so amazing and beautiful...love The Breeders...
Off you is such an underrated track. One of their best in my humble opinion.
Epic!
100%
Listening to the Breeders makes you realize that it’s a miracle Kim lasted so long in the pixies. Pixies should have made use of Kim’s vocal and songwriting talents way more than they allowed her.
i think everything worked out really well
They'll never replace her, no matter the incredible talents they've brought in over the years.
100%! I know there were two sides to all that drama between she and Charles, but I can’t help but feel like he was a butthead lol. I wish they could have worked it out. Pixies quality took a dive after she left
I love the Deal sisters
That tone on Kelley's guitar is killer!
Gives me hope as a 25 yr old aspiring musician. A year into learning guitar and songwriting. These bands remind me you can have a life doing music far past the popular appearance of youth. I often feel discouraged thinking i started too late.
But fuck it.
i only started learning drums a year ago and i'm currently in my very first band and i'm 30, keep it up dude, it's never too late
Get quiet in your head. Only have your voice there. No others.
turned 40 on Friday. Going to become a rock star.
As an older guy who saw the Pixies at the Lone Star in Kansas City in '88, I should give you a helpful heads-up here, and also some encouragement. The Deals, and the other Breeders (and Frank Black and the rest of the Pixies, etc) are gifted, but their approach to "learning guitar [or any instrument] and songwriting," is a kind of non-technical, intuitive, and intentionally naive one. (This is not a put-down of those people.) It is not like going to Guitar Institute of Technology, or being harangued by a gnarled old guitar teacher who nags at you to learn all the scales in all the keys, and corrects you if you use your thumb instead of a barre to get the bass note in a bar chord. The do-it-yourself approach works for the Deals because they have some kind of perfect pitch and telepathic talent. One of the reasons they never get bored or intellectually impatient with this approach, or decided to become virtuosos or jazz musicians or study music theory, etc, is because having alcohol-and-drug related "fun" held them back from such busy work. Again, not a put-down--from a musical standpoint anyway. However, I would strongly advise you NOT to do drugs or drink heavily.
I'm 56, and my band is getting ready to record our 1st full-length album. We're not "famous", but we have some local recognition, and more importantly, we're having fun and making music we love.
So glad the twins seem to be healthy and sober :)
I haven't seen any footage of the twins for a couple of years and I watched this with some trepadition. But they look superb, they have good genetics.
@Nick Taylor Always Ready!
Came here to say this. It's so good to see them this happy.
& happy. Y only 11 minutes. 😞😭😞
Are you the police?
Almost cried during Off you, they're definitely talented, unique and timeless as fck. Long live The Breeders ♡
Crying is ok
You put it so well and I so agree. Also a bit emotional seeing and hearing them again. The flood of good memories and so happy seeing them around again.Kim’s voice lands me back to the early 90’s.I love this band.🇬🇧🇺🇸👍🌎🌍🌏❤️
almost happened to me too!
Can we just acknowledge the guy who's mouthing Jim's crashes? What a unit and a team player.
🤗
Pretty sure that's Dave Lovering from the Pixies.
MetaGoth - 0:05
All Nerve - 3:33
Off You - 6:38
up
Kim Deal is the women of my dreams. She’s the best musician, I love her!!!!!
The breeders still the best 🖤🖤🖤🖤
They always have so much fun when they're performing. Those smiles and giggles are very real!
Listening to "All Nerve" and "Off you" in a row bring me feelings that i can't explain.
I had never listened to The Breeders before this past weekend at RiotFest. I fell in Love and I can't get enough, now.
Such attention, care and patience go into these songs. That can be traced with commendable consistency straight back to 'Pod', but If you did not notice it before, this performance brings it to the forefront. Beautyful!
This stuff does remind me of "Pod"!
they always get the slacker label (probably cos one of em always has a beanie) but Kim is such a meticulous and subtle whiz at arranging
If you ask me, they're the perfect band to play such a small place, it fits the Breeders' natural minimalism.
What a charming and warm little concert. Kim Deal has the most calming and pleasant voice I know of.
Better than ever, and they were already legends.
That was wonderful! I'm so happy to see them again. Feels like coming home a little bit.
Luv how they're all so obviously happy and having a great time ("Shut up Kelly" always makes me laugh")
Josephine is so cool in a geeky way
Kim has such a beautiful voice! And they have so much fun playing. Wonderful!
One of favorite bands of all time.
This is everything I ever needed 💖💖💖
Me too, well said.
Kim has the most beautiful Voice in Indierock.Title TK is a really great Record. Its my Favourite LP and the Drum Sound is fantastic.
I've watched this 3 times, and I'll watch it many more.
wow. just hearing kim sing in this acoustic setting is such a treat. let alone the original line up in such an intimate setting.
Great voice. Great performance. Perfect. Thank you.
30 yrs on ...and I'm STILL crushing on the Deal twins!!! Amazing.
I get to see them play on Thursday night. Dream come true.
How was it??
WoW 🎶 didn't know a single song but was F'ing MESMERIZED ! HATS-OFF Y'ALL 👍
Really Enjoying the new Record. This is Fierce, Love my Tiny Desk Concerts ❤️
Congratulations for the work of Kim and the Breeders, very good indeed. Big hug to all of a fan from Brazil
So Happy I got to see Kim with the pixies on the Doolittle 20 year tour in Louisville. It was also a great show with my brother. Rest in Peace. Also RIP Pixies. They aren't the same Kimless, if you ask me. But the breeders are cool too!
@J C Paz is a great musician and brings a lot to Pixies. Of course, no one can replace Kim, but Paz is great too.
Pixies are still worth seeing them live, at least It seems so in video.
I want to go see em next year
The joy displayed by Kim as she plays is such an integral part of her sexiness.
Guy Johnson canceled.
ever since the beginnings with the Pixies, it hasn't changed. that old inteviewer from 1988: why do you smile all the time?
agreed totally x
Such an honor, absolutely love The Breeders, thank you xx
Not only is this great music, but they're having so much fun making it.
Damn I needed this
One of the greatest bands ever. What a sound. Truly inspirational.
Wooow, thanks for bringing this legendary band to NPR!!!
You can tell they love what they do and masters of their craft. So nice to listen after a long day at work.
Yes. Breeders magic.
David Lynch should have incorporated the Breeders into his Twin Peaks soundtrack from the Roadhouse along with the Chromatics, Au Revoire Simone, Eddie Vetter, Nine Inch Nails, The Veils among others. The lyrics and how the Breeders incorporate rhythm and melody together is unique and makes Kim Deal's Breeders one of the best along with her former band The Pixies. Thanks for posting this, another gem from the NPR small desk.
I was just thinking how Twin Peaks this sounds
Perfect Timing per usual. Talented, amazing and resonant band.
I love being this old that I followed them all through their careers and can now watch this and is still love them for all they have done and what they are now doing.
They are so amazing. How they have grown in their art with the years.
I'm living for how much fun they're having playing the new song Metagoth :) I love that they're still creative and still having fun doing new things.
Pure class. Look forward to seeing them play Dublin!
Really nice to see Kim Deal joy while she plays/sings. Her enthusiasm and energy is contagious.
Kim just has this joyfulness about her. You can't help but smile along. 💓😊
Žižek on drums
I had the same exact thought
a bit more like Fred Gwynne in Pet Sematary
Hilarious!
Once the beat is locked in, it becomes as inescapable as the labyrinth of ideology! The patterns comprise a sort of meta-totality, an inside with no outside.
@Kevin Cobb * schniff * and so on and so on.
I am absolutely amazed by the talent out of every single person in this group. Rock on Oakwood. Ohio.
So stoked they played off you!! Thank you Breeders and NPR!!
06:38 - honestly, one of my favorite songs ever. also Kim looks really good
This really is a big Deal. Great to see this band in action. Always loved Kim. The Pixies ain't the same without her.
This performance is really moving and WOW...so tight!
Awesome…just awesome! To me these are true rock stars and damn I would love to see them live!
I am literally crying, and almost bawling, listening to OFF YOU - probably the best BREEDERS song....-so much of my entire last 20-30 years of life is with the Breeders...I am sobbing....It is crazy, but this band means SO much to me...they shaped my life from 19 with the Pixies through to Breeders etc.....Im 52 now, and watching this " off you" - I am crying and hoping my wife doesn't see me...they are the BEST!
Kim looks like she is having a great time. Well, whichever one is on lead vocals, I can't tell them apart sometimes. I like the way she plays the guitar on "Off You", almost vertically like a classical guitar or stand up bass.
I could listen to her voice eternally
One of the best sessions on here… magical
Josephine is such a talent, she can literally play anything!
"All Nerve" simple and straight to the point! what a class in heartily songwriting
Her voice is so full of everything. It makes me cry
Saw them in 2018 at Nelsonville Music Festival and jammed COMPLETELY OUT the entire time they played! LOVE the Breeders!
Kim has such a stunning, beautiful voice.
Kim- you're forever a bad-ass. Love love love The Breeders!!
The song "off you" is just beautiful. Thank you !
The group of awesome transports me to the dirty bars and clubs. I need to see music again.
Thats ALTERNATIVE to alternative!
Man, I feel like I've listened to Kim's voice my whole life. I can listen to her voice, forever.
This is so amazing! Beautiful!
They are so great live! You know a band sucks when their live shows sound suspiciously exactly the same as their records or when they don't sound recognizable at all. With the Breeders, you always get a really authentic performance that shows how talented they really are.
Jesus that last song is beautiful, never heard it before.
This is some alty ass alternative rock... I love it
They inspired alt rock.... lead singer was part of the pixies (she wrote/sang "gigantic")... which was the predecessor to bands like nirvana.
Always loved kim & this band. Thanks for the memories. Great to see they still got it!
So sensitive, so classy, so strong and softening. Thanks.
5:06 little moments like that are one of favorite things about live performances.
Love Josephine's guitar sound on MetaGoth 😮🙂 !!!
I’m so sad today. Your music means a lot to me.
This is fabulous
God I miss the 90’s
I guess you missed the 80,s cuzz that is the sound of the 80,s
plouk zoing what was their biggest 80’s hit??
I just looked it up, they formed in '89 but released their first album in '90.
Yes younger times etc...You might(might) dig this tune of mine? It's worth a listen..ua-cam.com/video/G4CYvM1g1zw/v-deo.html
What i meant to say is there sound is 80;s sounding especially the first song ...i guess you had to be there to understand
The initial warning of this youtube short film enabled me to immediately cease to watch/listen, diverting me from the risk of exposure to profanity, and consequently saving me from a life of progressing turpitude and demise
Koettnylle lol
Oh how I wish I would've seen your comment BEFORE I watched this video
Ikr? Thank fucking god
Love your comment. Very witty.
Shit ruins lives
Love when Kim sings/plays "I land to sail, Island sail". Makes my heart melt🥰
Thank you!! so wonderful!!
