My dad commanded an M60A3 in West Germany back in the 80's. He wants to play War Thunder just so he can operate one again.
My father served in West Germany too. Lots of fun stories and crazy ones too.
Holy fuckballs, he's gonna have play for like a year to get to it. Either that or give Gaijin 200 bucks
@@leonardotavaresdardenne9955 He plays a lot of games and we played World of Tanks religiously years ago. He enjoys the grind honestly.
Tony Close my great grandfather served in West Berlin in the late 40’s and early 50’s. He was a radio operator.
Cool storee bro
The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't. In the event that the position that it is in is not the position that it wasn't, the system has acquired a variation, the variation being the difference between where the missile is, and where it wasn't. If variation is considered to be a significant factor, it too may be corrected by the GEA. However, the missile must also know where it was. The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because a variation has modified some of the information the missile has obtained, it is not sure just where it is. However, it is sure where it isn't, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasn't, or vice-versa, and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldn't be, and where it was, it is able to obtain the deviation and its variation, which is called error.

Actual old Tankers loved the M60's TTS (Tank Thermal Sight) system. It is clearer, and longer ranged than the current system in the M1 series. It is clear enough, you can determine not only what you are shooting at, but set the crosshairs on a specific place, rather than "center mass". It's even possible to see distinctive uniform styles worn by Soldiers, including rank.
At night, we used them to watch meteor showers :)

The way that thermal and smoke works is that Most high tier Smoke Grenades will not be see threw due to a weird chaff like substance mixed in them, While you can see threw all ESS.
Bull Reeves it’s not Chaff, Chaff is reflective fragments such as aluminum or other items. Instead it’s the chemical reaction in the smoke grenade which is an exothermic reaction and releases infrared/thermal radiation that will drown out thermals.
Edit: Chaff is meant to be used against radar since all that metal means any radar lock no longer knows where exactly you are since to any radar that’s looking at you only sees what is basically a giant sphere that’s around 2-3 times bigger than you are.
@@Mgl1206 the substance is white phosphorus which burns at temps close to 3000° F when exposed to oxygen.

Been running the Rise (P) and TTS, been doing a ton of uptiers. Actually knocked out a t80 with the added side armor (forgot what it's designation was) this morning.
You play it patiently, like you would a sherman in an uptier. It will break breaches and lower armor just fine - but you cannot peak corners quickly with it. So a lot of it is picking a strong position and letting the enemy rush by. Then reposition.
Much easier when you have a reliable team - not playable in an uptier if your team is trash.
6:50 you can see trough this smoke with thermal, cause it's ESS. The engine smoke system doesn't counter thermal sights, because there is no metal particle in it.
Its not a bug with that smoke, there are two kind of smokes, one is termo active a one is normal. Thats why you can see trough iss smoke, but can't see trough some high tier smoke launcher smokes.
The smoke from your exhaust system is created by spraying diesel fuel onto your hot exhaust system. It is not very hot so your TI system can see through it. The M1 and IPM1 and M1A1 had this system as well and may still but the US Army switched to JP-8 fuel which has a different burn characteristic from Diesel and doesn't work with the exhaust system. They may have switched back or added chemicals to the JP-8 so the exhaust system smoke works again. The British design smoke projectors fire white phosphorus grenades which explode in the air providing a quick smoke cloud that is also hot. That will cool off as the phosphorus burns off and settles to the ground. Thus the TI won't see through it immediately but can later. The only bad thing about it is you don't want to fire your smoke screen off over friendly troops or civilians. Artillery delivered smoke was chemical resulting from burning a smoke emitting chemical in containers ejected from the shell and lying on the ground. It isn't hot so TI can see through it. The Russians (maybe) added ground rubber to the smoke canisters and the rubber would both burn and rise into the air with the smoke cloud creating a haze TI can't see through. Of course WT artillery can't fire smoke or WP. I of course don't know what Gaijin is using for smoke and if they have the right smoke in the right vehicles in the right year. And of course mixing vehicles from different periods means their smoke screens may or may not screen vs. TI and whether they have night vision equipment at all. I suspect they don't have white light night equipment and how their IR works as that requires a search light as well. There is also starlight night vision equipment and low light TV (see Canadian Leopard C1) both of which don't use IR searchlights but can detect them.
Phly: This is not a pushing tank

The M60s are my favorite tanks, especially when playing the American tech tree. I’m currently grinding the M60A3, and while I don’t think it should be put at 9.7, I’m gonna have fun in it
Thermals ignore smoke. Most dust it can see through. They also ignore weather. The only time they're useless is during dawn/dusk there's a thing called thermal crossover. It's where all temperatures 'cross' into nearly the same ranges and everything looks the same temperature. It's very temporary and can be overcome by adjusting the gain and the like, but it's very annoying.
Phly, with the smoke I think there is regular smoke and IR smoke. Regular you can see through and IR you can’t with thermal. This is what I heard at least. I believe it should be an upgrade to higher tier tanks
PhlyDaily, about the thermal sights and smoke: if it's smoke grenades or shells the thermal sights can't see through, but if it's ESS the thermal sights can see through.
Hope it makes sense, keep up the good work!
Nave4x4 it’s balancing.
Is it balancing or theres irl chemical differences between the smokes?
@@penzorphallos3199 I don't know if that effect can be seen in real life, but ESS and smoke grenades are made differently. ESS is made by pouring hot Diesel onto the engine or something. Some smoke grenades use white Phosphorus as the active ingredient.

The M60 is just one of those tanks that you envision being a beast, but turns out being that 5% of the time.
Phly, the J21A-1;2 and 3 are the props with the J21RA and A21RB being the jets with the J21A-3 and A21RB being grounded attackers.

Phly, you can see through ESS with thermals, however not through multi-spectral combat smoke grenades, such as Leclerc, Leo 2A5 have. Those even prevent from lasing on target.
Drove the M60A1 for 2 years way back when, a hell of a lot of fun.

PHLY I LOVE YOUR VIDS!!!
Phly, there was a shooting range video by Gaijin after the thermal patch dropped explaining thermals. They said that the Thermals can view through ESS
I was actually hoping you would play this next.
Did anybody notice that cloud of smoke that grew hahaha it was small then as Phly drove by it like sped up the expansion rate in 2 frames haha
Thanks you for this I saw it I was like why should I have to grind this but I want everything in the American tech tree
Hey Phly, the ESS smoke can be seen through by thermal scopes, but smoke grenades can't. Love the videos!
You know it’s a good vid when it has the bf4 music at the start
Phly is so clumsy... okay lets wait on my own ESS

Phly : I don't trust like that
Should have done this play in Sim battles!
FYI: Laser rangefinder in sim will auto set the distance for you after your range find something to the distance it said! (Check it out!)
Yeah, found this out a few days ago. I wonder why it won't do it for realistic lol
I was a crewman on one of these in the 1980s. They are great tanks, but the Abrams was much better.
Some smoke are White phosphores which have a thermical leftover so you cant see throught It, but you can throught smoke made by the engine which isnt by a thermical raction.
Phly Try the A21RB with m/49A for high pen center mounted rockets, it's glorious in ground battles.
I like the Sparks that they add in the game
It is 43 Celsius (110 Fahrenheit) where I live, so the Aussie heat is here. Keep up the great videos phly:)

You can see through ess smoke but not smoke launched out of the launchers from modern tanks, I don’t know about smoke shells however
M60A3 needs to move down to 8.3. The rest of the M60s need to be spread between 7.7 and 8.3 with the exception of the AMBT which should be 8.7.
hey phly u ever gonna do a vid on the german mig 21 ?
13:32 Oooo it can phase through trees
Now i know this is 3 years ago, but if I can give my guess as to why it DIDN'T kill you.
Your hull, is a V, it was believed (correct me if in wrong) that this tank will be encountering some mines or explosives. To counter this problem, a V was introduced so that the explosion force would not be effective against an angled downward/upward side hull. V hulls in the American Tanks during the coldwar are actually tough to break, given the chance and opportunity.
5:15 2 years later, the thermal going off bug still not fixed
The Sabra model might be cool to see in the game.
Phly, thermals can look through smoke IRL
Go avay was the best random moment ever...
ESS smoke doesn't prevent thermal as it's just smoke from the exhaust. Regular smoke grenades do as they have elements to prevent thermal :)
I hope war thunder will differentiate between IR and non-IR blocking smoke in later MBTs
The ASU 57 has night vision now
cant deny it looks cool af

Seeing an m60 video for me is like shotgunning 2 sour green apple Rockstars and having a small keybump before blasting DJ blyatman
Battlefield 4 theme is perfect for (other modern tanks in this game)
To comment on the smoke with thermals, they annotated this in a random news post or youtube video but your thermals will only go through ESS smoke, not smoke grenade smoke. Something about ESS being generated by exhaust and isn't as thick as a smoke grenade. Try and test this out.. it gives a good advantage to T-64+ vehicles that think they are safe with ESS.
A tank's smoke grenade is phosphorus smoke, both chemical and extremely hot.
The TTS should be 8.7 and in a bracket alongside the RISE wich should be 8.3 minimal, the only good about them is the ammo if you manage to grind them
*laughs in CM-11*
