the branch was cited for closure from gainsborough trent jcn to barnetby juction where it joins the main scunthorpe line and in a remarkable change of heart network rail spent many millions upgrading this this line as a immingham diversionary route which proved to come true after the line was closed at stainforth.... see my previous comment the line today is kept alive although under used by the occasional freight and the 4 trains a day service to cleethorpes on a saturday only
this was due to the line being closed at stainforth nr doncaster due to hatfield colliery tip slipping across the main line also affecting trains to goole and hull
