Don't Hate on The Ferrari Mondial. DON'T! -- /DRIVEN

  • Even people who love Ferraris love hating on the Mondial. That's unfair, says UK Ferrari whisperer John Pogson. The Mondial is one of the coolest, most accessible Ferraris around, not some lowly, Italian worm, and he doesn't care what you say about it. Sticks and stones.

I've had a 1985 Mondial QV for the last 8yrs and just love it. I agree there are lots of fantastic cars that are not Ferrari's. However, my choice has always been Ferrari and the Mondial QV ticks all the boxes for me. It's everything I wanted in a Ferrari, even the price. People bash the Mondial, why? is it because of it's 4 seats ? I have a son and a wife, so that's perfect! Mine is silver and looks fab. Most people ask when they see it, Why isn't it red ? I ask, why is your Kia outhouse shit brown ? and they get the message. I live in Perth, Australia and we have a lot of dickheads on our roads, so you cop a bit of shit driving in a Ferrari. I think to myself, can your 30 yr old car do 200km's per hr for two hrs straight and then ask for more ? I don't think so. I do all my own servicing and save a packet. Cam seals and belts etc. It's easy! Just do the research, study and check things twice. Buy them now guy's, cos' they're not making anymore. Enjoyed reading your comments. keep driving ALL those fantastic motors no matter what badge they have and help me to leave the biggest carbon foot print I can. Peace to all. Marc

I like his attitude. I can also relate exactly to what he is saying when he refers to certain people approaching him and engaging him in conversation about his Mondial. But people generally would refrain from such if he was driving a High end Ferrari.

@@DIYDanCars Yes, but you aren't calling them a POS either. Japanese cars are not my cup of tea either, but there are some very nice models available, such as an NSX. That doesn't mean they are garbage. I had to listen for years about how horrible Corvairs and Fiats are (yes I own both) by people who, almost without exception, have never even ridden in one, much less owned one.

Same 3 litre V8 engine as a 308? Check. Same gearbox as a 308? Check. Same wheels? Check. Same Pininfarina design? Check. Aluminium bonnet and engine lid, superb chassis and handling, classic engine note. A cool car by any definition - and one that seats four! And John Pogson is one cool Ferrari guy, who sums it up perfectly.

John seems like a really cool guy. I always liked the Mondial as a young kid. Over the years, I saw people sort of scorn them as not being true Ferrari's. I guess just because they were a bit lower powered and more affordable, that made them less exotic. In reality, they seem like fine cars.

The Mondial hate is a price vs performance issue. These cars were never that fast but still came with the Ferrari price tag and maintenance costs.

IMHO the Mondial was never intended to blast around the Nurburgring at warp 11, it was a car totally intended to be more a daily cruiser. Not every Ferrari is a race car, remember the 400, same thing, the 400 was to me more of a daily sedan driver, same here, its not a racer, its a driver.

What a beautiful video. As a Ferrari enthusiast, I must confirm that I am not a Ferrari mondial fan. Nonetheless I must acknowledge two things. First, this one, in grey with a red interior, is not something that you see everyday, and do bring a lot to this car. Second, the passion of John Pogson for Ferrari in general (especially F40 that he raced extensively) raises interest for every Ferrari enthusiast, I look at the car in the video, and I think " I am missing something here!". Great job Drive and many thanks for you collaboration with John Pogson.

Me and my friends bought a very old and beat up lancia dedra a few years ago. The goal was to have a big old car to take on vacations, night outs, concerts and to the beach. Despite being old it performed flawlessely and despiste being considered one of lancias low points, we loved the car and the brand. Yes, it never was one of lancias finest hours, it was an upmarket fiat tempra but we do loved that car. We all had better cars, but every one of um preferred to drive the dedra. Those alcantara seats, the nice sounding engine, the soft ride, the amount of lights and gauges on the dash... It wasnt a great car, but it was an awesome car, if you know what I mean

Ford never had a 911t, they never made a series 2 defender, there has never been a Gtr with a blue oval on the bonnets. This really touched me. I grew up in Idaho USA and there everyone owns a truck except they only like people who Ave the same make so all my friends would argue which was better. All that arguing gave me the mind set that if I get a certain car than ther will be some group that will make fun of me for buying that car. so early in my teens I started to like mor obscure cars like Saab and Alfa Romeo and so for my first car I got a Saab 900 turbo. All that matters really is that you get a grin on your face when you climb into it! Think about the number of people that buy cars all for the wrong reasons. They don’t love cars, they like accessories...Years ago I bought an 90´s BMW and I guarantee you that nobody would have dented my pleasure! It has been the best car I ever had and I miss it. And since then I have had more modern or trendy car that did not give me half that pleasure! So go for your SAAB if that is what you love. I did fancy the 900 years and years ago because I liked the shape and particularly the airplane cockpit windshield.

Mondial 8 was my first Ferrari suggested by my wife as I hated the handling of 911s in 80s after the superb 924 turbo. Got a QV as my company car and did 40k miles in 2 years the only problem I had was two diodes in the alternator. Had to stop using as Ferrari prices went ballistic and customers in the north of England thought I must have been ripping them off. Replaced with a Porsche 928 also a great car which did the same mileage for two years just a couple of problems, A 328GTS followed and eventually an F40 which when I moved to Australia I sold (big mistake) as they would not allow it to be registered. My current Ferrari is a 1980 308GTB which is raced in the Ferrari Classic series and is still road registered. Great car to drive and arrive in will never sell it.

I was gobsmacked and utterly transfixed, as it was the first Ferrari I'd ever seen in real life. It's proportions are absolutely perfect. I still hope to own one some day. Unfortunately I've never even ridden in a Ferrari yet. Thank you.

I used to have a Mustang GT and one day I was out driving it when a rear tire went flat on me. I pulled into a parking lot of some equipment rental place and started changing the tire when one of the guys who worked there came out and asked me if I wanted to borrow a floor jack so of course I said sure. He brought it out to me and while he was standing there he said to me, "should have bought a Chevy." That always struck me as kind of an odd thing to say. Do Chevy's not get flat tires? I don't get the whole car rivalry thing either... it's stupid.

Tons of comments in here are missing the point entirely. At some point, it isn't about performance or any thing quantifiable - if you love a car just because, that's what really matters. It isn't the fastest or most done up or anything like that, but the Mondial is a neat car. What matters is how your car makes you feel when you drive it, when you look at it, and when you think about it. Don't be so quick to count out your emotions in considering a car. If you love something, don't be afraid to show it just because some speed snob will put you down!

Worked a few years, for a local Ferrari dealer about 15 yrs ago. A few of us younger guys got to talking, (not so positively), about the Mondial while the head Ferrari mechanic overheard. We got a very serious surprise when he said it was an absolute weapon on a racetrack. Probably the best handling "modern", road legal Ferrari (set up properly), up to that point. He was absolutely serious. Not the fastest, the best HANDLING. Very, very neutral in many track situations that other models can't touch. Other models would be a one or two trick pony so to speak...

I love audis, theyre my preferred brand, but i wouldnt be upset with a bmw, or mercedes, or a GTI at all. My dad used to own an 88' Mondial QV cabriolet but had to sell it for financial reasons. Him and I loved that car and were saddened to see it go. My dad fueled my passion and love for cars without prejudice of brand and that's why I hope one day to find and purchase the same model for him so that we can enjoy it as before.

For only 300 more pounds (of weight) and thousands of dollars less than a 328, you get better feel, weight distribution, engine access, and two more seats. And the Mondial T had as much hp and more torque at lower RPMs. Who could hate on that?

  • @oldcargeezer
    @oldcargeezer 7 років тому +10

l had a Mondial t. Beautiful car, an event to sit in even before starting it up.
Sorry l had to sell it! Values have doubled in five years, l think the Mondial particularly the t version is 100% full fat Ferrari experience.

@@martinredif6297 On the earlier Mondials the engine does not need to come out. However, on the T it does...although my understanding is that it can also be done by removing the fuel tank.

He's right, they've been Waaay underrated for years. I personally find them quite attractive and though not fire balls, more than fast enough, like their predecessors the much maligned 308 GT4. Another more than capable machine (for its day).

Such true words from someone who really understands cars, no need to go out and spend a fortune on a supercar, even if you could! . Having owned a performance car sales business and driven everything from McLarens Ferraris and Aston Martins, I get just as much joy and excitement from my £15,000 1975 Fiat 124 Sport coupe, with an ex Ferrari engineer, Lampredi designed twin cam engine! Pick the right car like this amazing Mondial, spend your money wisely and you can still get to experience something as exhilarating as big money can buy!

thats a great looking mondial. have to say I usually see the kind of struck-out mondial with a ratty soft top, a bit of rust anywhere you like, and some big swirls, chips, cracks in the paint; maybe a couple weird panel gaps, especially by that quarter panel vent. but yeah, certainly this mondial at least looks completely wonderful

I agree with his overarching theme, but the reason so many people hate on the Mondial is that it's simply not a very good car, regardless whether it would have had a Ferrari badge or Toyota or BMW or whatever on it. Note that near the beginning he lists what he had to do to the car to get it to "speak" to him: suspension geometry change, alignment changed from factory, change the spring rates, etc. This is normal for us modder types, but for a car from a "performance" marque it's a bit... odd.
The reason being that the design just wasn't good to begin with. Ferrari didn't take as much time on the 4-seater as they did with the 12-cylinder cars or even the 308. They simply took a 308 chassis and slapped in a FOOT of extra wheelbase, and didn't change anything else! Same geometry, same steering rack. So you end up with a car that feels long and has a *massive* turning circle and not enough lock. Plus it's now noticeably heavier -- some 600 lbs! -- but with no power increase. Then you have all the quibbles which, to be honest, exist for *any* 80's Ferrari: build quality, parts prices and availability, wearing transmission + metal shift gate = grind gears or remove gate, etc. That, to me, is why the Mondial takes such a hammering from most gearheads. It isn't marque snobbery, it's just that all the care, maintenance frequency/time/expense, etc that it takes to keep an 80's Ferrari on the road just isn't worth it to most people, since the performance isn't there and most people don't think it looks as good as a 308/328. The only redeeming feature is the sound... and again being honest, it IS a great sound :-D
I'm glad the guy likes his Mondial, though, and I feel back for being a bit savage to it. I guess it goes back to his main point: everyone likes different stuff, who cares what marque it is! Just drive it and have fun.

John Pogson is a wonderful man. A man that knows he is 'lucky,' but has worked his fingers to the bone in order to benefit from 'luck.' Of course he is right, the Mondial is a GREAT car indeed. I own an '88 Mondial 3.2, and I can attest to the model exhibiting sweet handling, its growly engine note and other unique features. Every model around the Mondial has sky rocketed in value and price, but the Mondial has stayed steady. It is still very affordable, if you can find one. Mondial owners LOVE their cars. A very nice video, Mr. Pogson. Thank You.
