Roots of Rock n Roll LIVESTREAM this Sunday at 2pm EST! See you there!! 🙌🏻🔥
Strong recommendation for the Roots live stream. " Matchbox". By The Mavericks with Carl Perkins. Rockabilly.
They said Andy lol
Roots of Rock madatory.
Leadbelly- (all circa early 1930's)
1)Gallows Pole
2) House of the Rising Son
3) Black Betty
4) The Midnight Special.
5) Linin' Track
6) Where did You Sleep last Night
As later covered by Zeppelin, Animals, Ram Jam, Creedence, Aerosmith(Linin' track = Hangman Jury) Nirvanna etc.
Gotta start with the riff that launched a thousand guitarists…….. Johnny B. Good by Chuck Berry
@@bonzodrewski Great track and agree but first need to start much earlier Robert Johnson, Leadbelly etc
'Fox On The Run' was probably their biggest radio hit in the US, and where the group likely earned their "pop friendly" status. 'Love Is Like Oxygen' (long version) is a must listen, as well as their earlier 'Little Willy'.
Love those songs. Thanks for reminding me of them. Did not realize Sweet did them.
Yup!
I think this song was their biggest hit where I grew up (Vegas). Those other songs were more, "this is also from the Ballroom Blitz band."
Their biggest radio hit where? I presume you hail from somewhere other than the UK?
I USED TO THINK Love Is Like Oxygen was ELO
I don’t know why this song gets so much hate. It’s not Mozart, I get it, but it’s just such a fun vibe and makes you want to dance. Different music has different purposes and this fulfills it’s purpose brilliantly.
It gets hate? I have never met anybody who doesn't love this song. If you're having a bad day put this track on the player and you'll instantly start smiling.
I don't know who you've been listening to. But so far, anyone I've seen react to this song, liked it...
I remember my mom saying every time it came on the radio, “this song is so stupid.” She was 35 at the time and preferred traditional blues, Dylan and the Stones. But it’s still fun and energetic and I still know all the words and sing along even though I can’t sing 😆
Life lesson: Not everyone likes to dance.
@@vespoint My parents said the same thing about some of the songs by the Beatles. Also stated "Don't think about growing your hair like that ! "
Here in England we loved Sweet. I was 10 when this came out and played it over and over again until my mum and dad were ready to strangle me.
As a kid when this song came on the radio, you would stop what you were doing and spastically dance around the room. Now in my 50's I still find my self bopping to it. It stood the test of time so I agree, A+
I love that grungy guitar sound. I would love to know how Andy got that sound
I´m in my 50´s too, and this is one of the songs that still makes me get up on the dance floor! :D I would accept breaking a leg dancing to this. :)
I STILL DO!! 😃
You too huh? 😅
Hellraiser...Fox In The Run .. Blockbuster...Action...Poppa Joe...Little Willy...The Six Teens ...Love Is Like Oxygen.....You guys got a way to go with The Sweet .😎
“Love is Like Oxygen” should be next, make sure it’s the long version.
No doubt, probably their best song……
Definitely
Always loved “Love is Like Oxygen”. For many years I thought ELO recorded it.
Definitely the long version… Without a doubt but I still think the song “Action” is their best rocker
“Love is Like Oxygen” has to be next….absolutely!
You're listening to this song as adults, but imagine being 13 yrs old when this was first released in the UK.....it just sounded brilliant. A great glam rock band of the 70's
We here in the States felt the same thing!!
Sweet, der Hammer in den 70igern in Deutschland
Shit I heard this on the radio in 2007 when I was a kid and thought it was the greatest thing ever
I’m not sure why people are hating on this song- it’s fun! Not every song has to have some meaningful lyrics. I’m so happy that you guys heard it as it was- fun.
Totally agree!
This song is fucking fire is what it is:D
I mean i love the lyrics by Pink floyd and Tool, or Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan for that matter:
But this shits fire :D
Yup. It's ok just to have fun pop songs that have no deep meaning behind every word. Not every song or video has to be like "This is America" or some shit.
Sweet the most underated band ever. Great musicians
Yeah, they actually didn't get the kudos for their musicianship.
This song could have easily been on the "Rocky Horror Picture Show" soundtrack and totally fit in! Just funky fun!
I always thought it was from that soundtrack when I heard it until I started listening to their albums few years ago.
I'm far from a fan of musicals, yet did assume this was from RHPS, as to me, the style is identical.
This and RHPS really are akin vibe-wise
It was on Wayne’s world. Which fits too.
You should do rocky horror
The Ballroom Blitz" was inspired by an incident on 27 January 1973 when the band were performing at the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and were driven offstage by a bottling.
The Mighty Sweet, are still, one of the most sucessfull Artists here in Germany! With no more than 8 Number 1 Hits here. Four oustanding Musicians....SWEET forever!!
I loved this song back in the seventies. This band was on fire back then. Love Is Like Oxygen is one of my faves.
A true banger. One of those songs that always gets a great reaction from the crowd. Who doesn't like this song?
You can’t go down this glam road without listening to the New York Dolls first…their influence on everything that came after them is astounding. Take a listen to their “Personality Crisis”.
LOVE the Dolls!
Or David Johansen’s “Funky But Chic”
YES!!!!!
I love Jet Boy
Yeah, it is difficult to overstate their influence
I don't think Punk Rock would've been the same if all us kids in the 70s hadn't heard this song when we were 11 or 12.
As a lifelong drummer. Mick Tucker is one of the best drummers whose ever lived. Believe it or nor. Bonham good.
Yes! He is under-rated.
Mick is the only one of the band left alive
@@johnlangston7314 Mick died years ago (2002) - Andy is the only one still alive
New generations of fans are continuously being introduced to "Ballroom Blitz ". Krokus did a cover of it in the 80's, and Tia Carrere (as Cassandra ), belted it out in 1992 in the movie Wayne's World. Most recently the song was featured in the film Suicide Squad. Great reaction! "We're Not Worthy!"😉
The punk band The Damned also covered this with Lemmy from Motorhead guesting on bass.
@@atorthefightingeagle9813 Cool. Thank's, I will check it out.
@@lisamorrison2149 I'll check out the Krokus version. Thanx
Krokus! That’s who I was trying to think of!
Yeah! I remember Tia Carrera doing this in Wayne's World! She wasn't too bad.
This song and this group is a perfect example of how music affects each of us at the individual. Hearing things such as overrated, underrated, teenie bopper and Glam Rock. Who really cares if you like it you like it. Some may hear a cello playing and think it's beautiful while others here a lead guitar whaling away and think that is beautiful. Music affects each one of us on a personal level. It's like getting on someone for liking the color of blue because it's pleasing to their eye. And you must insist that red is better.
Well said. This is one of my favorite all time bangers. It was one of the first songs I ever heard that was a banger in ‘75 at 12 yrs old.
@@kevinlogozzo3952 exactly while they'll be people that will say dude this isn't a banger no way it's pop. But to you it's a banger and that's cool cuz that's how you perceive it.
I like it too, and I listen to jazz and Classical also, so no shame here.
That is true, because when I was younger I thought this song was kind of cool, and now it does nothing for me, so I suppose it has to do with how you relate to it. Two songs that was cool back then but I still relate to so many years later, that others may think are lame, are Fire by Arthur Brown & 18 by Alice Cooper
You can like Boone's Farm better than Bordeaux too.
1. Watch the studio video for fun: the fashion is hysterical! 2. This song was written about a real event that happened to the band. They played some pretty rough gigs, and one night, some punks were in the crowd. "The man in the back" yelled "Attack" and The crowd started throwing glass beer bottles at the stage. "The band started leaving": they had to run off stage to protect themselves. Thanks for reacting to this classic!
9:30. "A fun song."
Absolutely correct.
The Sweet were my favourite glam rockers, just did not take themselves seriously.
And Brian was a proper rock vocalist.
Thanks for the memories.
Love is Like Oxygen by Sweet, long version with an extended instrumental section, is an absolute must listen.
That's for sure!
No flipping way!
Most definitely!
You betcha!
Absolutely
The Sweet omg. We studied Love is like Oxygen at school in music class back in 1978. I was 13 years old and still love them to this day ❤️ Please give it a listen too
Brilliant song! An Andy Scott composition I believe.
The album version or the single version?
I love how much deeper the album version is...
Congratulations, you have just experienced the 1st true Glam rock band, Sweet. Then came Van Halen, Motley Cruel, etc. The Sweet was an awesome part of the 70's. Love em!
My fave glam rock 70's band. The album Give Us a Wink is a gem. Love all of their stuff! The photo you are looking at is a recent one of Andy Scott...the only surviving member...and the band he put together to continue the music of Sweet.Brian Connelly,Mick Tucker and Steve Priest have all passed.
Sweet's "Action" seriously rocked -- the second single I ever bought.
That was their opening song when I saw 'em in '78. Stunning.
Read all about it
Streetheart
Blockbuster.
Yeah they've got so many great songs that weren't even hits!
Imagine roller skating as fast as you could at a roller rink to this with your best friends. It's 1974, and you are living the best teen life.
yeah i did am 57 !!!!
Then your older brother comes in and introduces you to Zeppelin and you never listen to this teeny bopper garbage again. Lol
Been there!
I was right there with ya! I still remember doing the ‘YMCA’ arm movements🤣
I was 14 in 1974. Burning up the roller rink to this song!
This is just a *fun* song! No deep meaning, no snobby "not good-enuff" crud. Just rockin’ and rollin’.
I also love their "Hellraiser" song and their surprisingly sophisticated ballad "Love Is Like Oxygen"
"Over-theatrical" is one of the defining aspects of '70s glam rock. Also, in the '70s rock and roll was the predominant musical style, so something with this kind of punch and grit would fit nicely on the radio.
Absolutely!
Haven’t seen anyone mention that it’s two lead vocals. Brian the lead singer does the mellow verses while Steve, the bass player does the wild bridge parts. Many of their early songs featured them trading off.
If you can find it, Steve's performance on TOTP as gay Hitler is totally camp.
Fox On The Run. Action. Hellraiser. Burning.
@@submandave1125 it’s the top of the pops Christmas show where they perform Blockbuster
One of my favorite bands. So many worthy songs. "Fox On The Run", "Action", "Blockbuster" and "No You Don't", to just scratch the surface. Pat Benatar did a pretty cool cover of "No You Don't", too.
As heard in the film
"Dazed and Confused"
-Sweet - "Fox on the Run"
A+ banger! Even better than
Ballroom Blitz
I would love to see you guys react to “Conquistador” (1972 studio version) by Procol Harem. Very unique and a very under appreciated song. Same band that did the iconic classic “Whiter Shade of Pale”.
I think that version was actually taken from a concert with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in 1971. That is the best version.
Conquistador Live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra is much better than the studio version...!!!!
@@jordan390a Yes. I've recommended this to A&A previously.
@@penguin1924 you are correct!
@@penguin1924 Absolutely, first time I heard it I was stunned and amazed
Love the Sweet. Massively under-rated and unfairly written off as a novelty Glam band. Could seriously rock if they wanted, Alex and Andy should be listening to 'Set Me Free' next.
I like 'em too, just not this song so much.
@@burmajones803 I don't know what could have been worse from their well known songs. Maybe Wig-Wam Bam. Hopefully they'll pick up on Mick Tuckers drumming.
In my rural town everyone was wearing high heeled boots like " Freddie Mercury's". Watching Freddie dance in them is a treasure.
Welp. That was unexpected. But maybe it means they'll give Sweet more listens, which would be good.
Set me free was hard enough the the thrash band Heathen did a cover in the 80s.
Sweet was a great band. I lived in Sweden in the early 70's (but American) and they were everywhere in Europe back then. At 6 years old (1973) I had their 45s.
I still smile through this entire song every single time I hear it.
This was our cake eating song at our wedding in ‘93. It turned into a Ballroom Blitz!!! Cake covered the wedding party!!!
That’s awesome!
ALEX AND ANDY TRUST ME THE SWEET WERE HUUUUUUGE I MEAN HUGE PLEASE DO FOX ON THE RUN ,, WERE YOU CAN SEE THEM YOU WILL DIG THIS BAND BIG TIME ,, I DO THERE 70s GOLD
"Fox On The Run" is a straight up bop. Totally pop in the best possible way. "Love Is Like Oxygen" is somewhere between FOTR and this one. FOTR was in one of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, so you may have heard it before.
Fox on the Run isn't pop. It's bluegrass. Just FYI.

"My Sharona" by the Knack should be next, although I'm sure there's no earthly way you haven't already heard it. Maybe the biggest banger of its day.
This brilliant song came out when I was about 13 and I can still remember every word. Love it!!
Again, you have to take into account how sophisticated we were when it came to the variety of great music that was normal for us.
Listen to They're Coming To Take Me Away from 1966. lol
There was nothing unusual about being campy and bizarre in pop music.
The major glam rock bands of the time other than T Rex, well worth listening to are Slade, and Mott The Hoople. You also need to check out early Roxy Music.
Virginia Plain and Pyjamarama
Roxy music are one of my favourite bands they were more of the serious side to the glam tag ..
One of the great amazing British bands. And as much as I love All the Young Dudes, Mott the Hoople had basically that one hit which they probably wouldn't even have that except David Bowie gave it to them to help them, whereas The Sweet had several bona-fide hits and tons of incredible material ranging from as early as the late 1960s with Little Willy Won't Go Home, through this middle era where they had Ballroom Blitz and Fox on the Run and some others, and then when disco became more prominent in the late seventies, they did a bizarre kind of rock disco thing that was another monster hit, Love Is Like Oxygen. We loved all of it. They were just so incredibly good. And their album Desolation Boulevard is just killer. It's kind of a precursor to metal in some songs, like I'm A Man, but it's just so fun.
You should check out some Slade as well, songs like "Cum On Feel the Noize", "Coz I Luv You", "Mama Weer All Crazee Now", "Take Me Bak 'Ome", "Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me", "Gudbuy T'Jane" and "Far Far Away".
If T. Rex were the artsy college kids of Glam Rock, Slade were the rough and rowdy English working class lads, complete with bad teeth and atrocious spelling...
You may have heard their Christmas classic "Merry Xmas Everybody".
And some of their later stuff "Run run away" and "Wall of Sound" were brilliant.
Did they spell slade that way or slayed
@@leonbogdan1686 My spelling is always impeccable, unlike that of Slade.
Here to join in with the "love is like oxygen" chorus...long version of course. Has one of the all-time great riffs and simply kicks...money back guarantee!
Try the live version off "Cal Jam 2"
Was a teenager when this came out. Still holds up to this day. Just a FUN song.
This is probably their quirkiest song, though they have some others. Totally underrated band! They have some sick straight up rock stuff too, like Sweet F.A. or No You Don’t. Mick Tucker is one of the best drummers who ever existed.
Earliest hit was Little Willy. Fox On The Run was very popular, but pretty bubblegum. Love Is Like Oxygen was a huge hit, great riff, but kinda weird arrangement. All of Desolation Boulevard is a great listen. Their best most rock album.
More Glam Rock goodness: “All the Way from Memphis” by Mott the Hoople and “Children of the Revolution” by T. Rex.
Yes and Yes
Absolutely! “Roll Away the Stone” as well.
@@historyguy5942 definitely! And Ian’s solo track “Once Bitten, Twice Shy”!
“Fox on the Run” would be a great Sweet song to do… also some of their catchy glam rock hits like “Wig Wam Bam”, “Little Willy”, “Teenage Rampage” and “Blockbuster”, and later rockers like “Windy City”, “Set Me Free” and “Action” (which Def Leppard later covered)
Saxon did Set Me Free. Sweet was/is an influence!
TRY the Band SLADE from the 70s , There a huge Glam Rock band GOD Father of Glam Rock , Songs CUM FEEL THE NOISE And Momma were all , crazy Now From 1974,,,
So many good songs by Sweet. Teenage Rampage, Rock n Roll Disgrace, The Six Teens, Blockbuster, Sweet FA, and on and on. One of my first albums I bought was Desolation Boulevard and was blown away. Been a fan since then. Their harmony is excellent.
Their Sweet Fanny Adams was a fantastic album, so underrated.
"The Ballroom Blitz" was inspired when the band were performing at the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and were driven offstage by bottles being thrown during a local gang fight.
The intro, the over-the-top vocals, and the chorus make this a MASSIVE EAR WORM. This was a candy party for your ears.
I'd go "Little Willy" or "Fox On The Run" next. The Sweet KNOW how to hook.
It made me happy to read that. Big fan of their hooks.
Noooooo if they listen to Little Willy they'll never get it out of their heads!
A band I've never seen suggested here are Sparks, not sure why this song made me think of them but I'd love to see your reaction to "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us" - but it would have to be a video version to get the full shock value :-)
Sparks are amazing, can't wait to see 'The Sparks Brothers' film soon.
Yes, Sparks. They have a ton of great songs within their albums between 1974-1976 period. They have interesting stuff in their later career as well, but its definitely the seventies more rock n roll stuff that's stellar.
@Jason Raymer Also in the movie "Valley Girl" (early Nic Cage, before he got his teeth fixed....)
Yes, Sparks! Great live shock art new wave band. Also Oingo Boingo doesn't get any love. I've suggested to these guys that they should check out Oingo Boingo, but so far they haven't heeded my call. They are missing out big time!
There is no one that compares with Sparks. I tell people to think of the Opera section of Bohemian Rhapsody, and then keep it up for an entire album. I started listening to them as a junior in college, so that is a lifetime ago. The only groups I could compare them to would be Sweet (mostly Ballroom Blitz) or possibly 10cc. The only theater playing the Brothers Sparks movie was too far away for me. Hope I can rock like that when I am 70!
Ahhh…Sweet…the best band ever! 🙏 You should also react to their heavier songs, as Set me free, Keep it in, Yesterdays Rain etc. The original line up from the 70s was phenomenal. 🙏❤️🥂👌
Ballroom Blitz was a top 5 song in Canada. They were hugely popular in the 70's
‘No You Don’t “ is fierce. Mick Tucker on drums is unreal
That whole album is quite good IMO.
Back in the day, this was a fun disco song. Everyone went nuts on the dance floor when it came on, especially later at night (drunk!). Still played at parties to get things moving, by us old folk 😂
I'm old enough to remember when this song came out. But I was still a kid. I was just at that age when I thought the teenagers were soooo cool, and couldn't wait until I was older. Oddly enough, I remember the smells -- Aquanet, strawberry bubblegum, and Love's Baby Soft.
Did you guys know this song is based on a true story of a riot at one of their shows in Scotland, and yes they left the stage half way through the show as bottles were being launched at the stage!
Mostly pop hits from The Sweet but then they put out a masterpiece with "Love is Like Oxygen" in 1977. You have to listen to it. The extended album version of the song (6 minutes 57 seconds)
This one always did and still does remind me of ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW.
Yep me too
Exact comment I made when they posted this song on the poll. Mott the Hoople All the Young Dudes should have won.
Me too.
Sweet has had a few hits, but what makes them stand out a bit is each of their hits is in a different style. Ballroom Blitz is in a very early glam rock / punk style, kind of like if T Rex collided with Meatloaf.
It sounds more like a song by Gary Glitter
Amazing song with a great intro.Sweet was an underrated group with great songs.
I remember hearing this song when I was 5 in 1975, and really liked it. I also remember my oldest brother having a Sweet album that had Blockbuster on it. Then I never heard the song or Sweet for years. Then it was probably 1983 and I was in a Musicland and heard the Krokus cover of Ballroom Blitz. A few years later I got the Desolation Boulevard album, and years later, a best of CD. It was until a few years ago watching the video that I realized that the lead singer wasn't singing the "theatrical" pre-chorus parts.
This was the 70’s guys . This band were considered pop or bubblegum music but they rocked ! Their B sides were really heavy. Great memories thanks guys maybe after you do Mott try some Slade
Glam rock
Sort of a guilty pleasure song back in the day. Kinda liked it but would never admit that in public to my fellow rockers. "Love is like Oxygen" is much better (IMHO) and was more socially acceptable to listen to. Extended version even had a bit of a prog vibe to it. "Fox on the Run" was OK, too (and very pop-ish).
Fox on the Run was my guilty pleasure song.
Socially acceptable!? Haha! You miss the point of rock and roll.
I love all Sweet’s “hits.” Part of my growing up!
@@danieledlefsen940 Acceptable within MY social group, which was very much into harder rock. When this came out we were all listening to Led Zep, The Who, The Stones, Yes, Deep Purple, etc... and this definitely was NOT that, lol. Still, if it came on the radio while I was alone in the car the station didn't get changed. Bowie, T.Rex and Mott the Hoople were significantly more acceptable "glam" acts amongst our group.
No guilt here. I think think this is a great song and holds up well. I like those other songs too, but this is my favorite Sweet song.
We had a lot of fun with our music in the 70's. (says a 61 year old woman)
for sure ( 61 year old man)
@@foodguyable Agree, says the one who's 75 next month ;)
Ballroom Blitz was inspired by an incident at Grand Hall In Killmarnock,Scotland on the 27th January 1973. Because it was the early days of Glam Rock, and possibly because the audience wasn’t familiar with the band’s live set, the band was “bottled” off stage in a near riot. Brian Connelly was later, quite severely, assaulted. The assault was played down and they did get a hit record out of it, however, the repercussions haunted Connelly for the rest of his life indirectly leading to his early death. Anyone dismissing this as a bit of bubblegum pop is as wrong as anyone could be.
Fox on the Run is their best song.
I agree.
Liked it but I always found it a little too restrained. Now Little Willy and Blockbuster really let loose.
Blockbuster
for me it,s no you don,t
There was a nice version of it by the all girl metal band Girlschool.
Now this really takes me back to my youth. The Sweet were a huge band in the UK when glam rock ruled the charts. We all went out and bought the platform shoes (if our parents would allow it) and wore them to school (if we could get away with it). Although Sweet were very ‘glam rock’ in the charts they were also a very good rock band at heart. Brian (the singer) tragically fell victim to alcoholism later as so many other ‘rock stars’ did, a great band though.
THE SWEET.... LOVE IS LIKE OXYGEN LONG VERSION PLEASE
@@viclagina347 Need that funk breakdown, man.
@YoungJim Platform shoes. LOL I remember those!
Platform shoes and polyester bell bottom pants and throw in a polyester blend slightly tight sweater type shirt with long sleeves and wide lapels.
Oh yes, the platform shoes and bell bottoms. I was 15 in 1974, when this song came out. Somebody please build a damn time machine, what I wouldn't give to go back!
Hi
I can’t believe no one has mentioned Blockbuster ; which is by far their best song in my opinion. Classic.
Hey guys, so glad you gave Sweet a chance! One of my all time faves...but check out their heavy stuff like Sweet F.A., Set Me Free, Cockroach, No You Don't...tough and badass, ahead of their time! Sonic harmony vocals too.
You stumbled onto the central theme of Glam: Theatrics. You can feel it in the music, and when you see live performances it all comes together. T-Rex, Bowie, Sweet, early Alice Cooper, etc. etc. etc.
Theatrics are fun! That's what makes Glam fun and cool.
Simpey Nomany - We were stuck in a jam and suddenly randomly burst into Little Willy, next thing the work guys in the van alongside were singing it too ... hadn't realised the windows were down cos of covid fear ... it was a happy jam for a few minutes ... :D
Been waiting on this forever - it does miss something without the video so you can see the full glam-ness of the situation.
Yes! They need to watch it being performed!
They rocked hard at times but also did some great ballads as well I believe. Awesome group.
Sweet. Such an original sound. Right up there with The Cars.
If you ever watch live videos, this song shows how much fun the drummer is having! He's just killing it with the twirls and looks into the camera.
They had a little period where they moved from bubblegum into more metal and I love that mid period. Totally underrated band.
My 17 year old daughter and 15 year old son lost their minds when I played (blasted) this in the car. They love it and now all their friends play it. This is a fun song and the music videos of Sweet playing it are even funner.
The most underated band. Seen them countless times. A pity only Andy's left.
This song was the sh*t back in the day. Such a fun rocker. And all these years later it still kicks butt.
yes it does , timeless classic
Still love it today!!!
Local radio used to play this and "This Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide" by The Kings every Friday at 5 o'clock which meant the official start to the weekend had arrived! Good times! Nostalgia wise - Ballroom Blitz is always an S Tier song for me - I have never turned the channel when this song came on.
Yep.
@@pastorofmuppets13 Ditto here. S Tier!! Happy with their A & A+ rating though.
One of the songs we would speed skate to back in the day. Black Betty was another great one.
Underrated band and played "Bubblegum, "Glam", "Hardrock" and eventually wound up playing "FM-rock". 4 great singers and the drummer is hugely underrated. Only Andy (Gandalf) is alive today. Still playing as The Sweet (Sweet).
I remember Sweet. They were definatley pop. You should see a live video of them. The are glam, and camp, and really ham it up. You can hear it in the use of voices in the intro to the song.
Good song (the vocals makes it a novelty song to my ears), but if this beat out Mott the Hoople's "All the Young Dudes," that's a crime.

"All The Young Dudes" written by David Bowie
This actually isn't there best song even though it bangs. Two of their best are "Fox on the run" or "Love is like oxygen (long version)" This is their second song that was the second hit for the band in America their first was "Little willy" Ok so little known fact. Yes, you knew it was coming. LOL “Ballrooom Blitz”, came from a riot that saw the band bottled off the stage, at the Grand Hall, Palace Theater, Kilmarnock, Scotland, in 1973. Men spat, while women screamed to drown out the music. So when the leader Brian Conolly asks "Are you ready, Steve?) It serves two purposes. One to ask Steve if he is ready for what could possibly happen, and an interesting way to introduce the band members. Are you ready Steve? (bass player Steve Priest), Andy? (guitarist Andy Scott), Mick? (drummer Mick Tucker). One of the writers of this song has written several hits for well known artists. Tina Turner, Pat Benatar, Rod Stewart and Exile just to name a few. As always guys fantastic review. Stay safe and peace oooutttt.
Great background information. Thanks so much.

The UK version....
This was a great fun song from my school days. We really liked it and the Sweet too. Not heavy, no spiritual messages just pure fun. The Sweet did several fun songs like "Fox on the Run". For me A+ when you want fun and a great time with a sound to match.
I've always loved the crazy elements of the song. It reminds me of the Rocky Horror Picture Show's Time Warp song.
Exactly my thought!
I have always said the same thing.
Alex’s analogies are always spot on
One of my favourite bands in the 70’s 🎶
British Glam rock at its finest. Tongue in check rock, love it
The song is seriously a party waiting to happen - pop it on the turntable, needle down - party is happening. Next favorite song for me from them is "Love is Like Oxygen" (long version)
You want a Banger, Sweet created Thrash Metal as well. Sweet FA is the first Thrash Metal song. Sweet had the most diverse styles of any band around. RUSH came after them.
In Australia the big hits were Action, Fox on the Run , Ballroom Blitz and Peppermint Twist
The Who “You Better You Bet”. One of their best after Keith Moon’s death.
The drumming sounds like it was inspired by Gene Krupa. Gene was definitely a forefather to Rock 'n' Roll. He was a rock drummer before rock ever existed, the first of his kind. Then came Buddy Rich, one of the best drummers of all time.
Neil Peart payed tribute to both those guys.
Mick Tucker. Very cool.
Good ear, Kevin. Krupa and Buddy Rich were his heroes.
Seeing our hosts GRINNING through the whole tune was fun
I remember watching this on Top of the Pops back in the early 70's with my parents, brother & sister. Those were the days. Great track
There's a Sweet tribute album called "Ready, Steve?" which is quite fun. These guys were glam, yes, but also turned the corner into camp a little. But the rock cannot be denied. I join my voice to the chorus of folks asking for Love is Like Oxygen, but this (Ballroom) is probably my fave. Have we discussed how one of your rock movies needs to be Rocky Horror Picture Show? Because if you're going to have a "glam journey" (lol), you MUST do RHPS, no doubt. And read up on the crazy cult life it's had, too, even in the time before the internet when everything was just word of mouth and, you know, showing up to things. Oh, and as I recall, Sweet was originally The Sweet Shop, and then they went by The Sweet for a bit, but I don't think anyone uses the article anymore.
A thousand times yes to Rocky Horror Picture Show
I would totally join your patreon for Rocky Horror
You guys really rock
