- The 5 volt reference circuit is like the cardiovascular system in your body, no 5v ref is equivalent of having no blood psi (YOU'RE DEAD!). But today's cars can have as many as 4 different 5v regulators, while older systems only had one. With a shorted 5v ref on a single regulator system, the engine computer will be completely dead. You will have no communication with it and it will not have spark, fuel or injection pulse. Danner,a few days ago I apply this tip on a diagnosis on Peugeot to find why car had no scanner communication,no spark,no fuel pump and injector action and no nothing. I just tested MAP sensor wires,it had not 5v,and I just read a electric diagram and found a bad fusible oxidation. I cleaned and put a new fuse, after that car worked. That simple tip help too much. Thank you Danner.
I'm working on 2010 journey, and there is no spark, and the fuses are good shut down, fuse good, maybe the tpim?
@@rodger6940need more info: What codes do you have as a starting point? Power to the coils? Injectors fire? Fuel pressure? (Does the pump prime?) 5V ref circuit alive?
Hey Danner, I have a daily driver 2012 silverado 1500 202k miles, codes ,172, 175, 442, 455, I did a plug wire change thinking it was that but when I checked the spark plugs all my passenger side plugs still looked clean and brand new while the driver side has the usual wear on em. I'm thinking bad ground on my fuel injector harness. I thought it also could of been the charcoal canister because I'm getting a strong gas smell by the gas tank after I driven it for about a half hour but then all 8 spark plugs would look new, I did a plug change in July. I don't know what's going on . I took my truck to a few shops they want to run test on top of tests and fix all the other stuff going on with it to but I'm not falling g for that after I seen your channel .. any ideas?
@ScannerDanner 2010 journey no codes no spark, 60psi fuel pressure
There is no power to coils. I was looking at the diagram that the fuse 20 ,21 (asd)provides the power, but their good
But it is also a relay. I just don't know if the relay is built inside the tpim because it looks like injectors and coils get power from it
I haven't checked the 5v yet
Nice find. I had an inspection reverse light on a 21 Hyundai the other day, with a little observation I found evidence of collision damage and the broken ground wire. Taking your time and paying attention to what you're doing can really pay off in these situations
I was working on a Ford expedition. One headlight was dim, one was bright, a running light wouldnt turn off unless you turned of the vehicle. I checked voltages which were a bit lower than it was supposed to be. I suspected a bad ground, added one with a power probe, worked great. Checked the diagrams, and i immediately knew. The truck had a new radiator, and the main ground was a common ground for everything up front and was on a bracket that is part of the core support. It was a rare occurrence of an idiot induced long circuit. The ground was coming through another circuit entirely. I bolted down the ground ring i found with both circuits shared ground and it was fixed.
F#$@ ya good stuff bro let's do some GDI and O2 diagnostics this year and of course brush up on the basics I can really apply this stuff now I am In a position too, it only took ten years this opportunity is awesome thank you scanner !!! my boss is awesome he says go give that car a full scan BMW Mercedes benz subaru toyota JDM shop ❤
That is an awesome time. Thank you for sharing this with us. I work for a Ford dealership and find similar problems quite a bit. I appreciate your expertise and thank you for everything that you help us
The best/worst parts of my day are when I have to try & figure out issues like this. Great work/video as always SD.
Excellent job Paul I learn a lot watching your videos
Wanted to order your book to Germany. 184 Dollars of shipping costs😮😮😮??????
I think there is a mistake in the 5V reference of your shipping system 😂. Please check the shipping costs. Greetings from Bavaria/Germany
We can ship to Germany for around $30 email me at support@scannerdanner.com and we can make that happen. Thank you!
Inflation hit us hard.. lol. pay up
@@ScannerDanner Thank you 👍. I am looking forward to your book 🙂
Brightens your day when you find it on the first try. :)
You have to really stop and enjoy those moments when they happen; and remember them when you're on a hard diag and tearing apart your 5th panel and have half the car tore apart. lol
Even if you didn't have a dtc telling you ref 2 was no good you would have found it instantly following the danner flow chart you always go to the 5v ref first now I know why 🎓great video👍
Very nice editing job to cut out all the non-important chattery, love this style Paul.
You remember the original one then? Awesome. Glad you approve!
Simple fix for you, Dan.... not for the part changers, 😄
Well explained as usual, thank you
Exactly these auto shops should be ashamed
THANK YOU SO MUCH it was the wire harness it was melted on the valve covor were the egr valve is on top the thing you said you was messing with at first in the back there on the firewall life saver bro
I would like to see how you physically repair the wire in a tight space like that.🤓🧐
Nice find. Always learn a bit from your videos. Thank you
Great video Paul and advice not to move those harness around before doing a visual. Great tip.
great explained..easy to understand and follow..
lovely channel..lovely videos.. learned a lot already!!
wish you the best!!
cheers✌✌
Thank you so much 🙂
And of course the wire was buried on the bottom of a bulk harness under two layers of conduit wrapped in electrical tape near a subharness split! That Cadillac made you WORK for that one! LOL
Well, at least it wasn't a slightly dented coaxial cable integral to a $1,200 harness that flagged 14 hours of book time to replace! ;)
The harness under the intake on these melt all the time.
BRILLIANT ...BLOODY BRILLIANT PAUL, Thank you my friend, Happy New Year to you, your family and the SD community. Keep the video's coming bud.
I'm still learning keep the info coming.
Pine hollow auto diag, South main auto, Diagnose dan, Watch Wes work, Super Mario diagnostics, Automotive diagnostic and programming, Schrodingers Box, scanner danner..... Watch all their videos and in a year you can open your own shop with a scan tool and a scope. :) .. Incredible knowledge being given to us.
I watch many diag oriented vids (yours, pine hollow, south main with Eric O). Eric O used a light bulb hooked to power and grounded to his faulty circuit, and unplugged sensors and lightly jiggled the harness and found his fault that way when the light flickered. Its a valid method. I suspect on delicate circuits the scope method is safer, but on a 12v circuit down and dirty is faster. Just a thought, opinions? All feedback is welcome, from Danner to readers.
Ok .👍👍saeid from iran
GM vehicles have a LIMP mode. It won't run well but it can get you home. Old Chevys can be out of wack and still run.
.thanks man. Helped me a lot.
I need help!! I have codes p0036 & p2122 and I think the cause maybe from exposed wires specifically 02 sensor on catalytic converter !! How can I fix this
I'm sorry, I don't have silver bullets on this channel. You've provided me with zero information and no testing results that you've done. And you didn't even define the codes.
I can help, but only after you do some more legwork
I just gave you codes I’m telling you the wires that run to 02 sensor catalytic converter are damaged what more should I provide if that isn’t enough
@alexgaona5682 so fix the wires then. What are you asking me? Also define the codes. Im not a walking library. What are your symptoms? Also, year, make, model and engine. I do not have a magic wand or a crystal ball and I'm not here for the silver bullet seekers
i finally got the hard copy of your book just to see if i could learn something new. so far nothing new but i'm hoping i find a couple ah-ha moments. never too old to learn. when i'm done i'll find a worthy person and pass it on. do you have add in hd? lol
I love your content I wish you were around when I first started I had to learn all this the hard way I'm 60 years old now and I still love to learn
Can guarantee that if this went through your normal "Jimbobs Auto" that they'd have thrown a PCM, TPS, CMP, and so on at it. What I always preach is start simple. People think that because it's expensive or electronic that it's likely to fail. Start with the simplest things first e.g. checking harness integrity.
The beauty of these videos is that most of these diagnosis fall back on basics. They can even be done without a scope.
Something so many viewers do not understand. They say, "but you have all that fancy equipment". If they only understood that these methods can be altered to fit what tools you have. Thank you so much for the comment!
Yep it’s all about diagnostic in the right order 😊
Great video I like the scann tool video
Thanks 👍
AWESOME OUTSTANDING JOB THANKS
I think those have 2 crank sensor circuits, that may be why its running. May even have 2 sensors built into one . Of i remember
I didn't see two on the diagram, but you may be right.
Harness wasn't secured properly
Thanks Paul 😊
nice... from Peru
I have a 97 civic was doing good I parked the car to go eat and came back outside and my hornblows when I engage the starter I unplugged the hown fuse so the people around me don't get pissed and it it has a clicking noise in the passenger dash it has no crank no start situation
Lol, that's funny, I mean, I'm sure it wasn't at the time. How strange. Definitely would like to know if you have communication with the ECM and what your 5v ref circuit shows with the key on. Check it at your MAP or TPS.
@@ScannerDanner yea have you ever heard of that before have you ever seen a car do that
@@benhall8946not the horn circuit and on a 97 that's very strange as I'm sure it's not computer controlled. Main engine block ground issue maybe?
@@ScannerDanner ok so a ground would cause that could it be the horn clock spring or ignition switch
@@benhall8946a horn contact issue in the clockspring isn't going to cause a no crank no start condition. And an ignition switch issue shouldn't blow the horn! It doesn't crank right? Time to do some testing at the starter and then back track from there.
The best in the EAST!!!!
Wish you were geographically closer to me!
I’m struggling with a no command from computer to egr control solenoid either from old computer or rebuild computer 🥶
Weird 1986 ford e-150, would make a great case study video,
If you substitute a test light right at the ECM pin, as the load, will it light the light when the driver turns on?
Hi Paul
Thank you for your response!!!
Sorry for the delay
So just so I’m clear on this…
Test light to positive side of the battery than touch the pin on the computer and see if it lights up when the computer commands it on, right?
I just don’t want to damage anything
THANK YOU! 👊
@@Phantomas2011that is correct and no you won't hurt the ECM. Just make sure it is a ground side switched circuit. If it is power side switched, the test light need to go to ground. Most outputs are ground side switched btw.
How to tell? The EGR solenoid wire that doesn't go to the computer will tell you what's in the computer. If it goes to a fuse (power), then it is ground side switched. If it goes to a ground, the it is power side switched.
Ma man in Pittsburgh!!! THANK YOU for confirming, I’ll test it and will post the results 😀👊
Hi Paul,
THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR QUICK RESPONSE!!! 🙏👊
I didn’t test the pin we spoke about yet BUT,
I’m finding 9 volts on the 5 volts reference circuit, that circuit feeds three sensors.
I disconnected all three sensors that are on that circuit and there was no change using the old computer or new computer!
BTW the 5 volt reference is a ground
