Brings a tear to my Wisco eyes, so glad you guys enjoying one of WI finest.
I live in WI, Driftless Rye definitely outshines it’s bourbon brethren, but the bourbon is solid. I have a single barrel of each and mine is close to 7yrs, just heard they released one at 8yrs.
I love blending the bourbon and the rye for a sweet, oaky, spicy, cherry cola Bourye! So good!
Cheers!
Driftless is some killer stuff. It’s getting better every batch.
I live an hour away from the distillery and I finally bought a sib bp rye from these guys … holy sh** you guys weren’t kidding this rye is fantastic. It has everything in it I like about an mgp rye and a kentucky rye. It’s not quite a kentucky rye which to me could pass off as bourbon in most cases but it’s also not quite as herbally as mgp. Just delicious! Cheers bois!
I live in the Commonwealth of Virginia, FYI. And I think PA is a Commonwealth also.
best part is I can just go to the town over and pick up some from the distillery itself. Stuffs great!
Im 45 minutes from this distillery. Looks like Im gonna have to try this.
Brother Justus out of Minneapolis does a cold-peated American single malt that adds earthiness but not smoke because it’s infusing the peat into the whiskey instead of burning it to malt the barley.
don't forget guys that most if not all the grain is sourced in WI. The rye is not a high percentage rye, i think its like 60% or so hence why the herbal note is not punchy.
Rye is 75 rye 25 malt
I’ve been getting into rye lately and find there all so different.
Rye is the breakfast whiskey? Am I just ignorant, because I've never heard this.
I cannot find this rye anywhere!! 😭
Where can I find your whiskey
I did not get your message
Take a quick trip to your neighbors in Louisiana. Low lying region; swamp land has lots of peat. Please no comments on water content, it's no there, not the same.... cause it is. I know. I have used it.
I've been to the DG distillery before I was into drinking whiskey neat...but recently bought their bottle of Port finished bourbon and that is pretty tasty! I'd like to see the guys try that one!
I'd love to see this go head to head with the Traverse City Whiskey Company Barrel Proof Rye.
I've done this with my amateur tasting palette and they were very similar a few years ago, but today I would easily take DG. And Traverse City is really good if you can only find that one in your area. No shade.
Your first review was the 2 year which they bumped to 5 year. You can get a your own 10-gallon barrel Private-Label Bourbon or Rye Whiskey. Aged about 2 years. You can choose the proof it’s bottled at and can even help bottle it when it’s ready. You get to keep the empty barrel with your custom plaque on it.
Driftless Glen is a pretty small outfit. They are housed in buildings once owned by the Ringling Bros. Circus. I have been there a few times.
THANK YOU for reviewing different offerings from the Midwest! Being from MN myself, I'm very proud of what our distilleries up here are producing
Just picked up the 7 year single barrel Rye picked by Nate the distiller. Only 30 bottles. It’s an elixir from the gods.
“Two Guys in a Shed” sounds like a great name for an experimental whiskey! 😂
I'm fortunate that I have been to the distillery several times and was able to purchase non-distributed bottlings when they still did them (sadly no longer available last time I went.) This is easily my favorite rye. Also fortunately it's relatively easy to find on store shelves all over my area. Glad you guys liked them!
I've had the luck to try the Single Barrel Rye half-off (20$), the last one on the shelf, and OH MAN that complex caramel, cotton candy/cream soda mix, spicy tobacco finish on the nose that makes it so hard to put down the glass. As a Rye rookie, I was just floored the moment I put my nose to it. My usual drinking being rums, canadian whiskey, and scotch.
I have a 7 year Driftless Glen Rye 7 barrel pick that I could send you some samples of, let me know. It’s one of my favorites. And they are releasing an 8 year this weekend that’s only 30-35 bottles.
I’m from Wisconsin and admittedly I didn’t like Driftless Glen at first, I was fairly new to bourbon though so maybe that was the reason I didn’t care for it. I came back to it 2 months later and I loved it, maybe my palate wasn’t mature enough, who knows.
Like Texas, Wisconsin's unique weather adds complex characteristics and yum to whiskey.
I'm part of a bourbon barrel club and we have done a couple DG picks in both Rye & Bourbon. Some in the club love it and some hate it. My closest friends and I are in the hate it side of the club.
Even Breaking Bourbon said: Nose: Pecan, dish soap, mustiness, wet rock & Overall: The nose is certainly unique. It’s not so strong that it detracts from the rest of the sip, but is also hard to forget. The palate also has a unique tasting element that I can’t quite put my finger on. I’m not sure if it’s the result of a bunch of different flavors interacting with each other, or one note on its own. In the end, this is interesting bourbon to say the least. It clearly won’t be for everyone, and will appeal to the more adventurous type.
Not exactly a glowing review for a barrel strength bourbon
There are a few US states that still refer to themselves as "Commonwealths". Massachusetts and Virginia come readily to mind (i.e. "The Commonwealth of Massachusetts" and "The Commonwealth Of Virginia")
Driftless Glen Rye is ballin'. If you can find good Single Barrels of it, even better.
Day 5 I think of asking for a trash can cam
Both Copperworks and Westland in Seattle are sourcing their grain dried with peat sourced from the states, could even be Washington, can’t remember. Not a bad place to start
"... as always, if you or any of your mission team are captured, the agency will disavow all knowledge..."
Westland's American peat is almost paper thin, none of the expected peat flavors. It was a HUGE disappointment to me.
Thanks for the review guys 🥃
Tribe series idea! For each category whiskeys that are recommended for people that typically don’t like that whiskey category. Great variations that don’t follow the typical profile.
Buy any Driftless Rye store picks. They are all fascinating
My favorite distillery! Just went there last week. I bought a bottle of Single Barrel and the 51 Rye. The 51 Rye is my favorite of their offerings.
Also, Kentucky and Virginia are not states but commonwealths
I recently went to their distillery and loved the tour. I also picked up the latest r/bourbon barrel pick of Driftless Glen which is aged 7 and a half years. I believe all their regularly available bottles are around 5 years so it was nice to see what a little more age does to their bourbon. On the tour they showed us barrels they are aging 10 and 15 years so there will be a lot of cool offerings to come from these guys in the future.
Need to get some driftless Glen in my life
It's interesting seeing both Daniel and Rex's journey with Rye.
Don't forget there's the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
Really happy you guys liked it! Their bourbon is good, but it has a weird anise note for me. DG shines on their ryes! As Wisconsin gets its liquor legs under it, we're starting to do some decent things in whiskey. Cheers!
No kidding. Their ryes are killer. Its made me appreciate rye in a way I never have before.
I’d argue with the anise this would make an awesome sazerac.
There is supposed to be peat around the delta near Stockton, CA
Siberian peat! tasting notes of wooly mammoth
We're starting with the rye because, Rye Not?!
I hate a cough syrup cherry flavor in anything
Their port finished bourbon is amazing!!!!
Anyone know where I can find this near Denver?
my go to drinks is black velvet
How does one go about sending them a bottle to try?
Have you guys tried Creek Water?
I'm a fan of adding a tiny dash of peated scotch to a decent rye, just like 2-3 bitters shakes worth. A younger Driftless Glen and dash of Port Charlotte might be my be one of my favorite pours ever. Adds a bit of body and the Port Charlotte pepper adds some spice back to the finish.
I have a Driftless Glen single barrel rye from binnys in Illinois and I add a teaspoon of Ardbeg to a 2oz pour and it is mind blowing. Hopefully the prices don’t go up after this review.
This is genius! Thanks for sharing
Midwest represent
If anyone is interested, they are just south of Wisconsin Dells. So kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Take your kids to go play in the pools while you go visit Driftless Glen. They're fantastic but 3/10 times all I can taste is peanut butter. I'm sure it's just something on my pallet.
We get DG in Chicagoland. Binny's even has some of these Single Barrel Ryes. But who knows how close they come to the one revewed? The nature of single barrel.
I’ve had 3 DG rye store picks. They all had this crazy powerful note I (in my ignorance) can only refer to as potpourri.
Driftless Glenn is definitely great for their Rye Whiskey. Their Rye 51 is even better than what you are having. They also released a 4/20 Rye this year exclusively at the distillery. Limited to 75 bottles which is also amazing.
Thank you for the review!!
I picked these single barrels with Justin from Driftless Glen. My name is Dave Johnson and you will see my name and an image of my face on the side of the bottle. These are available at Hy-Vee Drugstore 2001 Blairs Ferry Rd Cedar Rapids Ia 52402. Thanks again!!
Scored a bottle of the rye. Absolutely love this pour. One of the most unique ryes I've had in a very long time. Would absolutely recommend grabbing a bottle if you can.
Really? no Team America style Maaat Daymon for this? REX... What the hell man.
So happy to see DG receive some additional national love. I still have a small amount of their first release - a "Young Rye" aged 18 months and 113 proof. It is surprisingly good for its age.
Driftless was awesome when I first tried it, and it kept getting better with age. I love their 5yr barrel proof bourbon, but now I'm going to have to track down a bottle of this rye.
Have you guys reviewed Willet small batch 4 year rye?
Definitely a great rye.👍🥃
Went to our Binnys and they had a pick of the 5 year Rye available and got one off this video, had it tonight and wow it is very good! Cheers 🥃
I don't know, I think I might be getting mixed signals, but I think they liked this one.
Happy Friday MB's, Have a Great Weekend, Be Safe :)
I did their tasting back in March and while I liked the other items, that first sip of the rye was magical
Peat - if it's not renewable maybe it shouldn't be a part of the process
GOOD MORNING YOU MB'S.... 🥃
TGIRWF...😂
So, YES! He redeemed himself.
I would say Chris redeemed himself
Im gonna send you some Polish whiskey (It's not bad actually), Where do I send it?
They're so inundated with donations they've stopped receiving them. But very generous of you!
I just stumbled on this at Winn Dixie and I really like it. How do you not get some tobacco and leather notes? I definitely get the cherry and even a little strawberry on the finish. Worth every penny I paid for it at WD.
I bought a bottle today at Winn Dixie for$17.50 great deal and I got the bourbon Breast cancer awareness bottle for same price!!!
I love both their bourbon and rye.
If you do visit their distillery, I highly recommend you plan to dine at their restaurant too.
I just had dinner there last week. I wasn't sure about the prices and then I tasted the food. Amazing. It made a great sales ploy to sell me a couple of bottles on the way out the door too. I will be back and I'm going to bug my Piggly Wiggly to start carrying the ryes. I only ever find the bourbons.
Looked like Binny's barrel picks with the round Binny's stickers on them. I had dinner at Driftless Glenn distillery last year when I was driving through Wisconsin. Nice to have this almost local.
HyVee grocery store on the top right circular sticker. That’s an iowa, Nebraska, Missouri grocery store. I wasn’t aware they were distributing outside of WI.
@@ewiken5529 DG is available in Minnesota as well...they also have HyVee's there too.
Is Tincup Rye MGP?
highly likely. Their American Whiskey is MGP Bourbon with Stranahan's malt blended together.
Wait, had Daniel always had a hand tattoo?
Yes. It's actually a birthmark.
not first.
I now regret not picking up the bottles of Driftless Glen when I had the chance. Also... You bastards!! I am running down the rabbit hole of Foil Arms and Hog. (shakes fist)
