What did everyone have as their top rye?
Sagamore 8!
Top rye WAS going to be Sagamore 8 until a buddy got a 134 proof JD SBBP Rye at a store. That was at least twice as good as the one I had. Phenomenal and probably an 8.8 or 8.9 / 10 for me. So rich and complex. I was ready to knock him out and take off with the bottle.
JD is killing it and certain sib of that rye are out of this world
Im really impressed with this list, so nice to see someone talking about something different. Hopefully i find some of those sag Ryes soon

Great list. I love the JD Twice Barreled and JD SBBP Rye. For me one of my top would be the Michter's Toasted Barrel Strength Rye. A bottle I just found in my area was a Luca Mariano single barrel select rye. 117.9 proof and it says 7+ years. Very solid bottle for that $70-80 range if you see it in your area.
Luca Mariano is sourced wilderness trail so it’s great stuff! Good find for a good price. I didn’t get a bottle of the michters toasted but I did get a sample this year but I wasn’t impressed with it placed behind my sagamore DO and Peerless DO by far but I hear there is a lot of variation so you probably got a really good bottle
Driftless Glen picks really impressed me last year.
Yeah they are killing it with almost 8yr picks out now
Great rye list Bourbon Bill, am waiting for a store pick of JD barrel proof rye, as I agree the off-the-shelf quality is too variable especially for JD.
The JD store picks are always better than avg shelfer good luck on the hunt

I am not a rye guy so much, but really like Corbin Cash 1917 Merced Rye. I only live 90 minutes from Driftless Glen and love their Cask Strength Bourbon. Heard their Ryes are good. 🥃
Dave you gotta get the rye man I know you fight the rye train but driftless does ryes better than they do bourbon and I really enjoy their bourbon

Sagamore is putting out phenomenal bottles. Great list. I have a bottle of Thirteenth Colony Cask Strength Bourbon and I love it. I’m sure the rye is unbelievable.
I hope the new sagamore owners don’t mess with their formula for success. And yeah that rye pick I had was better than the DO this year and a store pick bourbon I got to try 13th colony is doing unbelievable older rye picks
Bill! Purely on taste, do you prefer the 6 Year Wilderness Trail Rye or the Michter’s Barrel Strength?
That’s a tough one I think it would depend on the bottle of michters. I like michters rye didn’t get a bottle this year to compare but the wilderness trail cask strength ryes are killer but it’s sib vs sib.
So bummed the sagamore port isn’t in Michigan. Curious how peerless DO rye would do against sagamore DO rye.
I prefer the peerless DO over the sagamore DO but they are different animals. The sagamore is fruity and woody while the peerless is more dark caramel wood and coffee

I do what I can can’t ignore the really good hard to get bottles but had a lot that was super good this year that was easier to get

You know their regular sour mash bottle for like 40 clams is really good. Unfortunately all the cask stuff is picks and I know really hard to get but it should get better as they do more but the cask stuff bourbon and rye is out of this world good

Have you gotten any of the Peerless rye distillery-only single barrels? They are some of my faves and seem right up your alley.
I haven’t I really want to though because the single barrels are usually better. They just started doing picks outside the distillery for the Do Rye but only seen one on seelbachs I missed out on
Great list!! Love the sagamore picks. They are killing it. The custom blend we did that was called cherry pancakes is crazy good. 6 year rye aged 18 months in cherry brandy casks blended with 5 year rye aged 6 months in maple syrup barrels. The Maryland Collective crushed it with this. Let me know if you got it. Will send you a sample!!
Im a huge sagamore fan only about 1.5hrs from the distillery I was lucky enough to get a bottle from fairgrounds. Seems you might have more info on it. I was told it was supposed to be a pick between drug city and allview and only two barrels so what 400 bottles total but then other stores got it besides those two?
Yes that's correct but they wanted to make it available to stores that had good sagamore relationships. So several stores around the area initially got one case like BelAir liquors, friendship, wine world, and midway. It was so successful they ended up getting more. My buddy Mike got 2 more cases at Friendship in abingdon and it's gone. I grabbed 2 of them. Great for an old fashioned and just straight up.

I really dug the michters 10 rye I got to sample I would say probably in the middle of the pack the Low proof wouldn’t take it any higher
