- In this video I share with you guys my thoughts on the skilsaw carpentry chainsaw. One of the newer members of the sawsquatch family. I haven't used it a ton, but have been asked many times to make a toolsday with it. The carpentry chainsaw is definitely a niche tool, but could make a huge difference efficiency wise on many different jobsites.
If you don't want to invest in a carpentry chainsaw, maybe you want a prazi beam saw attachment for your current rear handle or worm drive 7 1/4" circular saw.

I was a little worried about installing the blade after reading a couple of reviews. But it was amazingly easy. Took about 1 minute. Works great ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxjpBI8OOeUXib_iT7UomCrQ-uauwZJ62c . Cuts easily and is perfect for pocket cuts I needed to make for replacing some old deck boards.
It’s great! My shed has been completed and it turned out nice looking and sturdy and it is way better than the sheds that many of my neighbors had put up. You sound like I did today cutting out mortar joints and surface grinding. Cords, more cords, and hoses everywhere. Drives me nuts!
I got the Prazzi attachment for my Skill Saw in the early 2000s and it worked very well , was easy to use, love cutting rafters with it , it cut upto 9 at once.

Don't see me needed this to much but it is cool as hell and I can see it being useful to some people.
Thank you for sharing, we had been hand cutting 8x8's and now I think the carpentry saw will be better.
I had an old chainsaw attachment for an old skilsaw but I’ve used chainsaws for going on 30 years.
I use a 30” chain bar when gang cutting and I’m not sure I would make this leap but will be keeping an eye on this for sure.

@RRBuildings The Prazi cutter does in fact have a tensioner, unless you have one of the very first models. should have an adjustment to the right of the bolt that attaches the power head to the saw. Great comparison video though, nice to see an all in one model. Pricey, but if you use it all the time, it would pay for itself quickly. Similar situation for the Cuz-D saw. If you need it, it's priceless.
You did a review a couple of years ago on the Prazi Beam Cutter if I'm not mistaken. Its a third of the price and I love mine.
The way skil is going with cordless I won't be surprised there is a cordless version of that saw.
The Prazi attachment seemed better to me. Tool seems akward to use, but fills a need. Great review!!
Had the Prazi for many years only problem was stepping on the bar laying on the floor
I noticed that the Prazi doesn't address the bar needing oil.
@@TERRORoftheLORD No, it doesn't but if you know anything about chain saws this should not be an issue. Have you never oiled anything manually. And I already had the saw.

But if you need to buy the saw it's a wash. He didn't mention if the skillsaw could be converted to a regular blade.
@@TERRORoftheLORD Since I put the Prazi attachment on my saw I have yet to take it off. (Many Years) Which means I probably didn't need the worm drive saw in the first place. But I really like it for landscaping timbers and such. Skills new saw with the bar looks good alright and probably well thought out. Good point on the putting a circular blade on it.
I would guess that your first chain that you said was used for a year might have needed sharpening?? This is one I can pass up (not like last week where you cost me money!!LOL), I have a couple of little gas saws which do the occasional job quite well. I would go with the battery chain saws before this one I think. Take care. Doug

Thanx for the info. I think that Prazi might be the tool I add to my collection. I wont have to lug my chainsaw to cut beams !! Watched your old Prazi video, looks like it will mount to pretty much any cordless saw !! Ive got the Dewalt 60volt !

Hi Kyle, your first skilsaw could do with a sharpen and depth gauges taken down and would slice through like butter
I keep track of your works - I think you create warehouses and very strictly and accurately everything you touch - well done, keep doing people masterpieces, I personally got a big desire to do things myself
Is it possible to rip lengthways along a plank with this machine?
Bought this today and it really struggled on cutting douglas fir beams, 8"x12"... bogged down, got clogged in the cut quite a bit even though wood wasn't that wet. Tried toe in and toe out to start the cut, nothing helped. Expected way more out of this saw, any experience cutting heavy timber with it that is similar to mine? Just curious if its worth keeping or not
I've used the Festool SSU 200 on track and that's amazing for making precise and straight cuts. Believe the price is about the same. Only 8" (200mm) cut though.
To make the cuts really similar how about starting with a new chain on the sawsquatch and prazi. Which one have you used more, wouldn't that one have a duller chain?
Sean Jones I was thinking the same thing, a dull chain would make either saw cut slowly.
Because in the end... does it really matter? It was a comparison per say. It was just giving people options for tools to make their jobs easier. Most people don’t even know this stuff exists

I’ve got the protool version which is a nice unit and runs on a rail which is good but only cuts 180mm so a bit shy on length
Kyle love your content, have you seen a mafell zsx this is a beast of a saw loads of power and bevels 60 degrees both ways and can also go on guide rails but has a hefty price starting at about £4500 with replacement tct chains running about £800 so not cheap per cut

Very cool. But would it be possible to do side by side comparison with chainsaw and a reg skilsaw doing multiple cuts for time accuracy and quality of cut?

That Prazi seemed to be running at a high RPM. Maybe that's why it cut so fast? Just a thought.

I’d say depending on your desire for perfection.
Kyle, I don't think $700 for that is really that expensive. It is a specialty tool.
Better than cutting by hand
Mafell and Festool have had these for years in Europe but they can be VERY expensive. One of the Mafell models costs over $17,000. You have to be cutting a lot of beams to justify that.

I always keep the biggest part of my base plate on the biggest part of my cut
Get yourself a straight forward chain saw and learn how to use it just as good.
No way you are getting cuts that true and square with a regular chainsaw

Mafell carpenters chainsaw, expensive but bloody good at the job. Rips curves into 6 inch oak slabs no problem.
got to tell you, the dreaded safety switch has been common on UK corded saws for more than twenty years, I hate the things ! but I still have a 9” Makita that does not , my favourite !
Pretty niche for most carpentry, but I could justify this for 11 7/8” glulam beams

nice for rough cutting, wouldn't trust it for exposed cuts, for 700$ i'll keep my 16" Makita circular saw and leave my chainsaw for firewood and what not......

Just want to put this out there, if a chainsaw is making dust then it needs sharpened. They should be making chips.
Im a production framer that frames very large houses, we are disappointed in this saw. It struggles through 5-1/4" PSL beams. Probably only use is bulk cutting TJIs with really rough cuts

If there is no safety issue here at work, think about the product that does not work later in the hand, can certainly cut a leg with it

This is an unusually clumsy video. After having this in excess of a year, it is also very late to the opera. I wonder if Skillsaw was responsible for pressuring Kyle to make the video in order to get the production model - or other tools in the future. I never heard Kyle say why he took so long to do a video on this saw.
I wanted to see if the bar could be used without the brace so it could be used in a plunge capacity for making tenons in post & beam construction?
No one pressures me to make any video on my channel... I’ve had it for awhile, I’ve gotten requests to share my thoughts?? What else do you want? I can only share what I know or how I use a tool.
