  • How to Wear a Wig in the Water (Tutorial for Mermaiding and Cosplay): Swimming with Wigs- How do you keep a wig on your head when you're swimming in the water? This is an important thing to know how to do if you're a Professional Mermaid, underwater model, or a Cosplayer who plans on attending a cosplay pool party! This "How to Swim with a Wig" tutorial will teach you how to easily and quickly fasten your wig to your head. It works great for regular synthetic wigs as well as lacefront wigs (you will need to glue down the hairline with lacefronts though). This is the technique I've used to prevent my wig from falling off of my head while I swim in Lake Michigan. I've swam is some pretty nasty conditions (think large waves and lots of muck) and have not once had my wig fall off when using this method. I think you'll find it to be very useful too in your underwater mermaiding and cosplaying adventures! ♥
    Here's what you'll need for the tutorial:
    ♥1♥ A Wig. I like my wig that I got from Gothic Lolita Wigs (you can watch the review video here: • Gothic Lolita Wigs Rev... )
    ♥2♥ A Wig Cap
    ♥3♥ Bobbie Pins
    ♥4♥ Hair Ties
    ♥5♥ Brush/comb
    Here's where you can find EVERYTHING you need and more for your wig wearing needs: a.co/6lrGqkt

    Hey there!
    My name is Mermaid Phantom, and I am a Professional Mermaid
    Entertainer.😇 I create weekly videos on UA-cam, attend parties and events as a real live mermaid and swim just for the fun of it in and around Lake Michigan. I own a MerNation Silicone Mermaid tail, which I use to create real-life magic in the lives of those that I meet. While I primarily work as a mermaid performer in Traverse City, Michigan, I am looking to accept work as a mermaid all around the world. In addition to mermaiding, I like to create "magical" crafts, explore nature and the world on dry-land and making new friends around the globe.
    If you like what I do, I would love it if you could share one of my videos with your friends. Personally, these are my favorite videos thus so far: • My Favorites

    If you don't want the chunkiness of the pony tail, then I recommend doing four frenchbraids from front to back (especially if you have bangs like me) then pin the ends of the braids to the top of your head then use your wig cap

    • @TheMagicCrafter
      @TheMagicCrafter  6 років тому +3

      Yes! I had to do that for my sister back in the day! ♥ My wig is quite poofy (and my hair is quite thin) so I don't usually have to worry about it. Great tip for others to remember though!
      Thanks for contributing! ♥

    I really love this tutorial since it doesn't involve wig glue or double sided tape. I was watching another tutorial where they said the wig glue would leave residue on your wig that you would have to clean off. Also, I can tell you have a lot of wig experience so I really value your advice!

      Thank you! I'm overjoyed to hear that you found it valuable! I have very sensitive skin and am allergic to most adhesives, so I don't dare try tapes or glues either! This is the only technique I go with and it has worked like a dream thus so far! So happy it could help you! ♥

    That wig is lovely! Quick tip: you can add combs to any wig! 😀 Also, crossing your bobby pins can make your wig much more secure. Basically, put one pin in, then put another pin over it so that they make an X. 😀
    Edit: holy cow, that wig makes your eyes really stand out!! It's a gorgeous look!!

    Quick tip: A much secure way to ensure the bobby pins don't come out is to have the wavy side of the pin against your scalp and the the straight side facing out. The wavy side prevents sliding out of the hair so if you have the straight side against your scalp it's more likely to slide off. Not a lot of people know this but it is actually the correct way to apply bobby pins.

    if you have longer hair or a lot more of it, i find that it helps to have two french braids with all ur hair then fold them over each other at the back of ur head and pin like a milkmaid hairstyle kinda. and if you have bangs, u can take small pieces and roll them on ur finger and pin curl to ur scalp for the bobby pins to grip onto through the wig. i did musical theatre for years and this was how i prepped for wearing character wigs :>

    • @TheMagicCrafter

      It really does! Unless you have thick hair AND long hair... then it's just a pain (I've done my sister's hair for cosplay... yikes!!! 😆 ). Thank you for sharing your tips, Finn! ♥

    I’ve been hunting YT, etc. for as many vids of how to swim in a wig. I have a lot of very fine (but mostly curly hair) and the combs, bobby-pins that I used in the past have caused several children to probably suffer from PTSD at the sight of a mermaid! I did a tug test and everything and still I suffered from wig wardrobe malfunctions! I don’t want to color my hair purple and I really want to use the wig because it helps to keep my persona separate from my mersona! Also, I had the Ariel style hair before she did & choose to have my own mersona! I love Disney’s TLM & know it by heart (I did Ariel when I was MUCH younger- that’s me from a number of years ago in the picture there) and especially when I was in my 20’s, kids asked me all the time if I was Ariel wherever I went. It eventually kinda bugged me after so many years but I didn’t let the kids down! Now however, I try to keep away from the Ariel character and go w/ my own mersona so that way if I run into one of the kids I volunteer w/ through an event or charity, etc. the magic for them isn’t broken. Wigs have done fine for land visits but they have failed me miserably in the water. They can get seriously hot in the summer when I go to charities that are hosting outside events. The water has always been a problem for me w/ wigs. Obviously the reason for my relentless search! I got great tips from you as well as several other videos. I’m going to combine as many of them as possible for water visits. Traumatizing small kids isn’t my thing! So, the braids & my wig glue (secondary precaution) and a few different tricks to see if my fear of wig-loss & scarring kids psychologically will be abated. I did see that the best wigs to use for the water are front laced synthetic wigs (thick better than thin) which I found in several videos. They mostly agree that human hair gets damaged too much in water visits and are really pricey sometimes. I may use a human hair wig for land but it depends on the price and look. Since everyone seems to agree that synthetic wigs are best for water, I’m going w/ that for water stuff. Thanks for the tips, demo and your wig company name. I’m looking @ several before I choose. I finally solved the makeup issues and the fake eye lashes in water but now I’m ready to get the wig! If you haven’t posted before about the best waterproof makeup, please do. That’s the second biggest issues my mer page has frequently. I’m hoping you’re already part of Souls Of The Sea. It’s a pg to pg 13 closed group for mers, mers to be & anyone who creates items or offers mer support through photography, tail companies etc. If you aren’t part of our family, PM me on FB & let me know where you hear of us. I’ll send you an invitation so you know what to expect from us. We have hundreds of mers from all over the world who would benefit from your info! Sorry so long but if it’s after midnight or I get really excited, I tend to write small novellas. Thanks for understanding! Ugh!

    If you sew extension clips all around your wig it'll help with the hold and you can use much less Bobby pins. (I swim in a wig myself and I'm losing my hair due to thyroid issues)

      FeistyFinsGaming Another great idea for the list I’m making of how to do this w/o a wig malfunction and contributing to the lack of mental health of small children who freak after a mermaid’s hair goes in a different direction than she does!

      Ananya Sharma if you’re a really good swimmer, get a tail, start w/ a fabric tail w/a monofin, and practice in the shallow end of the pool till you’re comfortable swimming with your legs strapped together in the tail. If you’re really comfortable in the water and swim really well, you’ll be able to enjoy flipping’ your fins really quickly! There are a lot of decent inexpensive first tails out to choose from! Be careful and have fun!

    • @TheMagicCrafter
      @TheMagicCrafter  4 роки тому +2

      Hmmm... probably Mermaid Raina's technique! She uses lace front wigs with and adhesive glue that holds the wig in place. Otherwise, you could use your real hair and have extensions put in, if you're looking to alter the length...? I'm not sure how that would work though, since I've never tried it for myself! But lacefronts with wig glue/tape will probably be your best bet ♥
      I hope that was a somewhat helpful answer? Best of luck to you!! ♥

      I have the opposite problem, but I understand being frustrated with your hair nonetheless! Have you tried wearing a wig yet?

      I have a long, black curly wig. I didn't try the technique yet, but I probably might use it some time. I haven't got a chance to go swimming lately because of the weather. I was a mermaid for halloween with a clownfish mermaid tail from fin fun and i wore my black wig. This year I plan to be an alien for halloween :3 I just like roleplaying so much I am always thinking of what I can be the following year.

      Ugh. Isn't that the worst!?!! Having all of those costume ideas and not being able to make them all quickly enough!?!?! Hopefully you'll get more time for swimming once the weather gets nicer. 😄

    You looks so different when you don't have to your wig on. You look so pretty when you don't have your wig on. your makeup is a little too much when you don't have your wig on. I'm just saying if you take off your makeup. when you don't have your wig you look super pretty. Yes your makeup looks better when you have a wig on.
